Building (and Testing) Improvised Body Armor

18283 ratings | 1160095 views
You ever been to one of those tile stores that's mixed with a library? Turns out those are just fronts for body armor production lines. Also, Brian and Jason are dumb and you shouldn't try any of this. The ceramics is to absorb impact energy, not to stop penetration
Soturian (17 days ago)
You could have tested how much you need to stop a 9mm
The target on the front catches the blade and stops it from slipping

They should use a ballistic dummy and see how well it does against an actual bullet

I think you could have used just one layer of books to make it smaller, for the same level of protection. But still. Knife and hatchet proof. Nice :D

so, so accurate.

so wait, you guys are in texas but didnt try to shoot it with an actual firearm? so which one of you is the felon hmmm? lmao
Colin Leppert (1 month ago)
Ceramics actually perfect, as brittle, but hard things break up bullets and reduce their penetration. Then all you need it something to absorb the impact. Well thought out and I'm not even at the part where they tested it

we just going to ignore the fact a youtuber died from trying to use a phonebook as body armor from a bullet. (this is all i can think about as they talk about it stopping a bullet.

I once saw two guys in the barracks drunk and arguing over a flak vest being bullet-proof... somebody got shot in the arm so no one was proven wrong.
Lorcan McIvor (3 months ago)
this is so ridiculously unsafe. ALL these tests could have been on a dummy and it would've proved its viability to my satisfaction. Really not cool

They don't have the right ceramics for body armor. The military uses ceramic plates with steel back parts to make sure the ceramic doesn't pierce the wearer, and it is made out of a tougher clay, and is held together in a near vacuum tight seal that makes sure it doesn't split apart and create lareg air gaps easily.

I worked with someone over 20 years ago that layered squares of lexan and linked them to form a vest for front back and side. He said it weighed about 25lbs when he finished, very hot, very restrictive

I made some stab-resistant body armor a bullet would rip right through it but what I did was I literally took some duct tape a 3-ring binder and some paper I got out of a ream I cut the two panels off of the 3-ring binder and basically made a sandwich out of that with about I would say I don't know 50 60 pages maybe 70 of paper and duct taped it all together and took my most razor sharp knife and stabbed it as hard as I could and it put like a dent I even tested axes on it and those only left a small cut

Ceramic breaks up bullets, which is why people put ceramic plates in front of Kevlar vests. The ceramic breaks up the bullet and the Kevlar catches it.

SpookySpice (5 months ago)
a more practical less duct-tapey armor would be if you but it in a backpack that it barley fit in and put that on your chest. (and/or back)
SpookySpice (5 months ago)
barely fit so it dosent move around
Conrad Jupiter (5 months ago)
jason has gotta be so ballsy where he lets brian chop him with a hatchet who would let their friend try to chop you while your wearing prototype body armor

Lol.... the idea that .45 has good penetration. Not it's not. It has lots of mass and kinetic energy but is almost useless in penetration power.
EnjoyedRex 485 (6 months ago)
Hey guys new idea shoot rubber bullets inside
ARGiammarco 27 (6 months ago)
Over a year later and I still want you guys to write Brian’s story in this episode
I don’t know if anyone in the comment section said anything about this, but ceramic is used in body armour to break up a bullet first before the bullet hits metal. Ceramic is not there to stop anything. It’s there to make a bullet easier to stop.

Paracord, wire rope, rope, metal buttons, and hex nut crochet ski mask and stealth body armour. You could honestly just do rope paracord wraps and knots lol

You had a lot of luck, if the ax had gone through between the books, jason would bleed to death

After hitting him with the blunty side and shooting him with rubber bullets AND stabbing him with a bottle opener that resembles a knife, he hits with an axe and feels bad that he is chopping his friend. Not hating, just sayin it's kinda funny

Just to let you know I know X Army Rangers and if they were not able to have a fully armored vehicle they would fill the walls of the vehicle with phone books to help stop the bullets and I also used to use books on the back of my targets that I used to shoot
Oompa Loompa (7 months ago)
Hey, just a heads up, even though it takes longer, removing the pages, laying the backs out flat on top of each other, and layering pages back over top of them with glue adds a large amount of resistance. Putting the hardbacks first, tiles second, paper third, with another layer of the hardbacks will always be the most effective. The hardbacks act as low-velocity armor, and "soft" bullet breaks, while allowing the tiles to be hard breaks.
