Mebane Faber: "Global Value: How to Spot Bubbles, Avoid Market Crashes, and Earn Big Returns"
Investment bubbles and speculative manias have existed for as long as humans have been involved in markets. Is it possible for investors to identify emerging bubbles and then profit from their inflation? Likewise, can investors avoid the bursting of these bubbles, and the extreme volatility and losses found in their aftermath to survive to invest another day? Over 70 years ago, Benjamin Graham and David Dodd proposed valuing stocks with earnings smoothed across multiple years. Robert Shiller later popularized this method with his version of the cyclically adjusted price-to-earnings (CAPE) ratio in the late 1990s and correctly issued a timely warning of poor stock returns to follow in the coming years. We apply this valuation metric across more than 40 foreign markets and find it both practical and useful. Indeed, we witness even greater examples of bubbles and busts abroad than in the United States. We then create a trading system to build global stock portfolios, and find significant outperformance by selecting markets based on relative and absolute valuation. Meb will also speak about 13-f research, and "hacking the hedge funds". Mr. Faber is a co-founder and the Chief Investment Officer of Cambria Investment Management. The Top Healthcare Stocks of 2018: Can They Continue in 2019?
Healthcare stocks are often viewed by investors as safe-havens during bear markets, so last year's correction in the S&P 500 could be one reason why healthcare companies were some of 2018's top performers. In spite of rising stock market volatility and returns last year, clinical trial results, FDA approvals, and new product launches helped Tandem Diabetes (NASDAQ: TNDM), Amarin Corp. (NASDAQ: AMRN), Abiomed (NASDAQ: ABMD), and Merck & Co. (NYSE: MRK) deliver envy-inspiring gains for investors last year. Can these top stocks reward shareholders again in 2019? In this episode of The Motley Fool's Industry Focus: Healthcare, host Shannon Jones is joined by Motley Fool contributor Todd Campbell to discuss: ● How a game-changing new product sparked a 1,480% return in Tandem Diabetes; ● Why results from a long-awaited trial caused Amarin's shares to soar 239%; ● What caused Abiomed's shares to skyrocket 74%; ● And, the one blockbuster drug behind Merck's 36% rally higher in 2018. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Subscribe to The Motley Fool's YouTube Channel: http://www.youtube.com/TheMotleyFool Or, follow our Google+ page: https://plus.google.com/+MotleyFool/posts Inside The Motley Fool: Check out our Culture Blog! http://culture.fool.com Join our Facebook community: https://www.facebook.com/themotleyfool Follow The Motley Fool on Twitter: https://twitter.com/themotleyfool

Cramer's charts suggest big-name biotech stocks Gilead and Celgene have more room to run
CNBCs Jim Cramer was somewhat surprised to see the biotechnology sector bounce back in 2018 after months of weakness. At a time when President Trump keeps slamming the pharmaceutical industry over excessive drug pricing, ... you might think that the biotech stocks should be getting slaughtered, the Mad Money host said on Tuesday. But you know what? After spending a long time in the doghouse, biotech as a whole is actually having a pretty darned good year, with the Nasdaq Biotechnology ETF , the IBB, up 17 percent for 2018, he continued. To make sense of the biotech stocks new leadership role, Cramer brought in technician Bob Lang, the founder of ExplosiveOptions.net and part of TheStreet.coms Trifecta Stocks newsletter team. Lang, who uses technical tools to track the action in particular stocks, decided to look at the groups most recent leaders and laggards, beginning with the daily chart of Gilead Sciences . Since Gilead went out of style on Wall Street in 2015 for curing Hepatitis C a feat that, somewhat ironically, investors figured would lead to less recurrent business for Gilead its stock has been pummeled. But Lang noted that in the last few months, particularly after Gileads $11.9 billion acquisition of cancer immunotherapy play Kite Therapeutics, its stock has been bouncing, logging higher highs and higher lows. Gileads stock has managed to break through its 50- and 200-day moving averages as well as its former ceiling of resistance, and key momentum indicators like the Relative Strength Index have surged into positive territory, Lang said. Better yet, Gileads moving average convergence-divergence indicator, which technicians use to predict changes in a stocks trajectory, recently made a very bullish crossover, telling Lang that the stock could be prime for a rally. The stock is overbought right here and the next ceiling comes in at around $82, up $5 bucks from these levels, but given everything else he sees in the chart, Lang believes Gilead can keep climbing, Cramer said. In fact, its his favorite name in the group and he wouldnt be surprised if it starts challenging its old highs of around $110 by the end of the year. Next, Lang turned to the daily chart of Celgene , a biopharmaceutical giant with a focus on treating cancer and inflammatory disorders. Shares of Celgene are down 20 percent for 2018 because of concerns about its leading drug, Revlimid , and the rest of its pipeline. But, like Gilead, the stock has been making a comeback in recent weeks. Lang started by inspecting Celgenes Chaikin Money Flow, which measures levels of buying and selling pressure in a stock. Not long ago, this indicator turned green, indicating to Lang that institutional buyers were warming up to the stock. He added that the stock has made a W formation of late another bullish signal. Right now, the stocks at $86. [Lang] thinks it could make a move to the 200-day moving average, ... currently around $97 bucks, in the coming weeks, Cramer said. He may be right given the recent rotation into biotech. Without the rotation, though, Im less sanguine. Lang also threw a third name into the mix Illumina , a biotech-oriented medical technology company that builds machines for DNA analysis with one of the best-performing big-cap health-care stocks since 2017. As far as Langs concerned, the chart is a thing of beauty, Cramer said, noting the stocks steady climb, robust Chaikin Money Flow and insanely strong moving average convergence-divergence indicator. The only issue seemed to be that the stock was overbought, but that didnt shake Cramer or Lang. This thing, though, has been overbought very frequently since 2017. Now, that has never been a reason to sell the stock, the Mad Money host said. Instead, youve done much better if you simply wait for the next pullback and we get those all the time and use that weakness to do some buying. Langs analysis echoed that point, recommending that investors use weakness in Illuminas stock to buy and strength to sell. The biotechs and the biomed techs have finally started showing some signs of life and the charts, as interpreted by Bob Lang, suggest that Gilead, Celgene and Illumina have more room to run, Cramer said. My view? Look, if you believe the economy is going to stay strong, then maybe this rally does peter out, but youve got my blessing to put on some exposure on any one of these or all of them, as I think Lang is going to be dead right. How to Pick A Trade: Best Practices for New Traders

You can buy stocks when they hit new highs, ideally in a hot sector, with catalysts in your favor. You can also short stocks, which is often just shorting scams. Short sellers can look for the most exaggerated hype-filled promises. Chances are these stocks are bolstered by lies and will likely fail. It's just a question of when. This is why timing is everything in trading. My take on it: Focus less on company stories and more on price action. Every now and then you can strike something huge, but if you’re constantly chasing odds, you’re basically gambling. Learn to look for and trade the best setups. Don’t play guessing games. Have the patience to wait. Use multiple indicators. I need all my indicators to line up. I trade like a scaredy-cat. And that hurts me from making big gains like I used to, but I'm also living a rather stress-free life. I’m not a perfect trader, but I have decades of experience. With proper knowledge, you can start to spot better plays. I know that you want action. I know you want trades. But it might be time to change how you think. Having the right mindset can shift how you approach the market and how you trade every day. How often do you play guessing games with your stock picks? How often do you wait for only the best setups? Be honest! So, how to avoid the risks of investing in the stock market? Here is the strategy that I apply. I only invest in big name companies that I strongly believe are not going to disappear (Facebook, Google, Enbridge, Royal Bank, Exxon, Tesla, Ford, GM, etc…). I have fair goals that I try to stick to without being greedy. So I watch these big name companies, and I wait for the stock price to drop for whatever reason. I don’t really care what the reason is because there is always a reason that makes the stock price drop and another reason that makes the stock price go up. It has always been like that, up and down, up and down. Sometimes, stock price drops without a reason, or a justifiable reason, and the media tries very hard to give a reason, but in reality we all know doesn’t make any sense. At the end of the day, if you look at the chart of a stock, you will see that it goes up then it goes down, goes up then goes down. So why not buy the stock when it goes down and sell it when it goes up? So this is the strategy I TRY to apply as best as I can. This is what allows me to make between 10% and 20% per year on my invested money. Happy Investing!!! In this series, I want to continue my education by digging deeper into the lives and careers of my guests to try and learn how they think. I want to understand the experiences that have shaped them, the failures they bounced back from, and the lessons that those failures have taught them. And I want to break down their success to find out what sets them apart. I'm not looking for trade ideas or guesses about an unknowable future, but rather knowledge, accumulated over the course of careers to try and make me a better investor. And I want to share those conversations with you. Several years ago, I was introduced to my guest today by mutual friends who'd entrusted a significant portion of their savings to. This man, they told me, invest in a way which is not only unlike the methods employed by 99% of money managers today, but also with an integrity and a methodology which is a throwback to a time which is sadly almost vanished. In the intervening period, as I've gotten to know my guest better, I spent a considerable amount of time trying to persuade him to sit down with me and share both his experience and his investment philosophy with the Real Vision audience. Sadly, each of my invitations has been met with a very polite, but very firm, no thank you. This was no surprise to me. My guest has never before been interviewed, either in writing or on camera, and for good reason. He's a private man who prefers to spend his time reading and thinking, who invests far from the spotlight, and with no care for either mainstream opinion or consensus strategies. A year ago, I finally got to meet my guest, and I spent an evening I will never forget listening to him talk about how he sees the world and how he thinks about the discipline of investing. That meeting made me more determined than ever to try and persuade him to break his silence and give others the chance to learn from him as I had done. Now, three years after I first approached him, he's very graciously agreed to talk to me in front of the Real Vision cameras. And so I'm excited to be traveling to the Swiss Alps to discover how his framework has evolved over the years and see how he looks at the process of investing that which he considers permanent, irreplaceable capital. So please join me for a conversation with Tony Deden. There are going to people that watch this who know you, and they're probably sitting there thinking, why the hell is Tony Deden doing it? And then they're going to people that don't know who, after this conversation, are going to go, why the hell do I not know Tony Deden? So I know this is the first time you've done one of these and I really appreciate the fact that you've agreed to do it, because there's so many things I want to talk to you about.

WMT Leads Sell-Off - Market Update February 20th, 2018
In tonight's update, Vince covers: 1) WMT stock tanked after reporting disappointing earnings and took the rest of the market with it. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 254.63 points, the S&P 500 gave up 15.96 points while the Nasdaq 100 closed lower by 5.16 points and the Russell 2000 Finish Lower by 13.42 points. 2) Bonds resumed their downtrend today, TLT (20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF) closed lower by $0.52 to close at $118.19. Crude oil Futures managed to gain just $0.09 while Gold Futures dropped significantly and finished the day lower by $23.40. This was mostly due to a strong performance by the U.S. dollar which closed sharply higher compared to a basket of six other currencies. 3) Can the NASDAQ save this market? After today's sell-off, with three out of the four main Equity indexes failing to clear their 20-period simple moving averages, it looks as though the Nasdaq may be our last hope.
