Metabolic Bone Disease in Leopard Geckos

I believe this is an incredibly important part of looking after a leopard gecko. You can have the best tank, the best food and a clean environment, but if you miss out this part of caring for your gecko, it can result in the physically irreversible, MBD. Euthanizing and Preserving My Sick Gecko.

05:16
Pets are a lifetime commitment. To their care, their health, and their happiness. When you purchase an animal, you vow yourself to it. You vow to love and care for it for the entirety of its life unconditionally. Reptiles are no different. It breaks my heart to see so many being neglected, abused, and bought impulsively. It’s no secret that I take in rescues. I love what I do. But there is always a case that makes you wonder how it got that bad and how long it’s been that way. Why actions weren’t taken previously before it got too bad. It’s heart breaking. You put all your time, energy, and heart into making an animal better and sometimes, it just doesn’t work out in the end. That sometimes, in the end, it’s better to lay them to rest than allow them to suffer. I took in Jade about two months ago now. She’s a spunky little leopard gecko with a lot of character. Jade has metabolic bone disease. A disease that comes from that lack of proper supplementing and nutrition aswell as uvb for species that need it. Because of this, Jades bones are extremely fragile and breakable. I was told she wasn’t eating. So I offered to take her in. She has the desire to eat. She wants to, but she can’t. Her jaw is broken. She can’t grip food. For two months I syringe fed her carnivore care and calcium and vitamins. Gave her warm baths after for 15 minutes so she could drink and get hydration. But she can’t shed on her own either. She requires assistance. Upon instant inspection, I noticed her breathing was weird. Almost as if her ribs where her lungs are, are missing. She also has a pretty bad respiratory infection. I’ve been continuously trying to clear it up with no success. Jade is too far gone. Make a note to yourself, to those who want pets, to anyone about to impulse buy one, of their care and to what happened to Jade. She got mbd from lack of supplementing. Her jaw broke because of the weakness caused by mbd. She has an RI due to poop being stacked and rotting in the corner aswell as a strong smell of ammonia. Her reptile carpet was wet. And she was laying on it. Something needs to change. Start with you. Rest In Peace Princess Jade 💔

Rest in peace alice.

00:55
Alice was a leopard gecko that developed stick tail (cryptosporidiosis). Stick tail is a deadly parasite that makes a leopard gecko or fat tailed gecko and some snake's tails very skinny and just themeselves skinny. The symptoms include darkened enlarged liver, skinny body, as you can see alice has one too, lack of interest in food, lethargic, and no significant activity such as climbing or walking. Alice is great and she will forever remain great in our hearts as we love her for eternity.

My name is John Phillips. We have horses, miniature horses. We have miniature llamas and alpacas, chickens, ducks. We have bearded dragons. Our website is www.squealsonwheels.us. Leopard gecko's tails are quite interesting. They, like other lizards, lose their tails, particularly as a defense mechanism and also because of stress and disease and some other causes. The leopard's tail is constructed where is has actual soft tissue areas where a predator that is chasing a gecko that catches it by its tail, that soft tissue area will separate, and it's a naturally caused issue with the geckos. The tail can actually drop off without the predator bitting it, and it will wiggle and the predator will spend some time looking at its tail while the leopard can get away. There's the soft tissue area also constricts its blood vessels immediately upon release of the tail, and it doesn't cause any problems of excessive blood loss. The tail after it's lost will grow back. It will look a bit different, but it's gonna be replaced by another tail. When a leopard gecko's tail does drop off, you to have a couple of considerations. You need to keep up a clean area in its cage so it doesn't get infections. It's better to have a covering of newspapers over the bottom of the cage. It can absorb any droppings or any of the liquids that comes out of the geckos, and you must keep other geckos away from him because other geckos tend to bully or pick on the gecko. Also need to watch when feeding crickets. The crickets will actually go after the gecko if they're left in there for a long time. So take any excess crickets after about 4 or 5 minutes of eating with the gecko. Take them out and feed them again later.
