7 Facts about Tasmania

07:25
In this video you can find seven little known facts about Tasmania. Keep watching and subscribe, as more Australian states will follow! You can now support this channel via Patreon, by accessing the link bellow. On November 24, 1642, the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman became the first European to discover Tasmania. Tasman named it Anthoonij van Diemenslandt, after his sponsor, the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies. The British shortened the name to Van Diemen’s Land. It was officially renamed Tasmania on January 1, 1856. Until late in the 18th century only the south-east of Van Diemen’s Land was explored. It was not confirmed to be an island until 1798. In the 19th century it was Britain’s prime penal colony with around 75,000 convicts sent there. In all it accounted for 40 per cent of all convicts sent to Australia. 2. Tasmania is an island state of Australia. The state encompasses the main island of Tasmania, the 26th-largest island in the world, and the surrounding 334 islands. The state has a population of around 519,100 as of June 2016, just over 40% of which resides in the Greater Hobart precinct. Promoted as a natural state, protected areas of Tasmania cover about 42% of the land area of the state, which includes national parks and World Heritage Sites. About 2,500 km south of Tasmania island lies Antarctica, which is nearer than areas in the northern Australian mainland. 3. Hobart is the capital city of Tasmania, located in the south of the Island. And while Tasmania is known to be one of the wettest states in Australia, it may surprise some to know that Hobart is actually the second driest capital city in Australia, second to Adelaide. Most people think that Tasmania is a wet and damp place, yet in Hobart it’s not the case. Hobart receives an average rainfall of 614mm of rain every year, unlike Brisbane which gets 1021mm per year. 4. Five of Tasmania’s convict sites, including Port Arthur, are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The rest are Brickendon and Woolmers Estates, Darlington Probation Station, Cascades Female Factory and Coal Mines Historic Site. 5. The Tasmanian Devil, which is only found in Tasmania, is the largest carnivorous marsupial. Officially listed as an endangered species, new research shows that Tasmanian Devils are developing a resistance to the facial tumour disease that has heavily influenced the decline of the species by more than 80% since first found 20 years ago. 6. Huon pine trees located in Western Tasmania some of the oldest living things on earth. The Huon Pine tree grows very slowly; a 20-meter tree could be thousands of years old. While the oldest individual tree or stem on the site now may be 1000 to 2000 years old, the organism itself has been living there continuously for 10,500 years. 7. Tasmania has the cleanest air in the world, monitored by the Cape Grim Baseline Air Pollution Station. The lack of pollution is due to the position of Tasmania in the Southern Ocean, far from other land masses. The Cape Grim station is located in the path of the Roaring Forties, which are strong westerly winds that carry pollution-free air thousands of kilometres across the Southern Ocean. Haulmark's Outback Truckers visit Schmidt Livestock Transport

09:15
Haulmark Trailers' Outback Truckers is pleased to join Townsville based Schmidt Livestock Transport's on a run out Kilclooney Station in Queensland's remote outback. In this video Outback trucker Owen Schmidt takes a triple road train on one of the wildest roads up in the head of the Gilbert River. The story of the husband and wife team is a fascinating one and begins with Liz Schmidt, mother of five, grandmother of three and advocate for the industry, broke through the traditional male bastion of the road transport associations when she became the first female secretary of the Livestock Hauliers Association of QLD in 1990. Liz had applied for the job only two years earlier; but had been told she would not be considered because she had four children. When Liz was finally appointed this position, she had just given birth to her fifth child. Liz and husband Owen operated Schmidt’s Livestock Haulage from their property near Townsville in north Queensland. Their fleet of modern-day Kenworths and the double-deck roadtrains they operate today is a far cry from the second-hand 1418 Mercedes Benz and single-deck strap trailer they started with in 1979. Liz is forthright, independent, outspoken and not afraid to stand up for what she believes. Having worked voluntarily on the LTAQ Board of management for over 20 years, she understands first-hand the issues impacting the road transport industry and the hardships that flow back to trucking families. Owen is thin and wiry, strong as an ox and gives the impression that he has forgotten more about bush tracks, cattle and roadtrains then most of us will ever know. Together, they have proved to be a truly formidable duo. With Owen working long hours away from home, he could not attend industry meetings, so Liz often went along as his proxy, and it didn’t take long for her to become incensed at some of the things the governments were trying to do to her business through unjust taxes and charges, and inequitable rules and regulations. Liz became the local area delegate for the LTAQ and has spent the years since lobbying for the livestock hauliers on local, state and federal levels. Over the years, Liz has been secretary of the Cattleman’s Union, served on the Townsville Transport Safety Committee and has been an active member of Agforce, Transport Women Australia and the Road Freight Industry Council. In between she has raised a family. In 2006, Liz won the Cummin’s Road Transport Industry Woman of the Year Award, and in 2007 was elected President of the QLD Livestock Transporters Association. Regional employer's use of 457 visas

02:43
A medium-sized steel fabrication business located in Broome, Western Australia faced a challenge not unfamiliar to many regional employers around Australia: recruiting and retaining skilled workers to help the business grow and meet its customers' needs. In the shadow of the resources boom, the company also faced competition for workers with nearby mining projects. Through a combination of skilled migration under the 457 visa subclass program along with investment in training and development of local workers, the company has been able to overcome these challenges to build both the business and, along the way, a culturally diverse and inclusive workforce.

Cassiar an Asbestos Mining Company Town 1960 British Columbia Canada

04:27
Cassiar was a small company-owned asbestos mining town located in the Cassiar Mountains of Northern British Columbia in western Canada. After forty years of operation, starting in 1952, the mine was unexpectedly forced to close in 1992. Most employees were laid off. Efforts to attract new purchasers to keep the mine running company failed so in September 1992 the town, mine and mill infrastructure was auctioned off. The closure was driven by a combination of factors including diminished demand for asbestos and expensive complications faced after converting from an open-pit mine to an underground mine. Most of the contents of the town, including a few houses, were sold off and trucked away. Most of the houses were bull-dozed and burned to the ground in this resource town north of Dease Lake. The mill was briefly reactivated in 1999 by Cassiar Chrysotile Inc which had a reclamation permit to clean up the site. 11,000 tons of asbestos were exported before the mill burned down on Christmas Day of 2000, effectively halting all production. Cassiar was once the largest town in British Columbia north of Fort Nelson, with a population approaching 2,000, its own store, school, hospital, churches and recreation facilities and set in a beautiful alpine valley 100 miles southwest of Watson Lake, Yukon. Asbestos had been known in the area by white men since 1872 and the local Indians had known for centuries that the mountain sheep bedded down on the yellowish-white "fluff" at the north end of Mount McDame. The established asbestos companies in Quebec, Johns-Mannville and Asbestos Corporation thought the deposit too remote, as did ASARCO. Conwest however, recognized the potential of the iron-free long fibre, and in the spring of 1951, began to develop the mine and bring to production, against a monopolistic market, in one of the most inaccessible and remote areas of Canada, the high-grade Cassiar Asbestos Mine. The mine is on the top of a mountain in northern B.C. at 6,000 feet elevation, 86 miles south of Mile 648 on the Alaska Highway and 100 road miles from Watson Lake, Yukon. By 1953 the property was in production. From the beginning it was realized that to maintain a stable work force in this isolated area, provision must be made for married staff. At first the open pit mine was operated only in the summer and ore was stockpiled to feed the mill through the winter but as markets increased it became more economical to operate the mine all year. The product was marketed through Bell Asbestos of Thetford Mines, Quebec, a subsidiary of asbestos manufacturer Turner & Newall of England, whose supply of fibre from South Africa was diminishing. From Whitehorse, the fibre in pallets went by White Pass & Yukon Railway to Skagway, Alaska, then by freighter to Asbestos Wharf in North Vancouver and from there to markets all over the world. For more about the town of Cassiar, check out the website, http://www.cassiar.ca/home/home.htm . For current information on asbestos, the hazards of exposure and to learn how you can help prevent asbestos-related disease, link to and join the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO), an independent organization founded in 2004. ADAO seeks to give asbestos victims and concerned citizens a united voice to raise public awareness about the dangers of asbestos exposure. ADAO is the largest victims' organization dedicated to preventing asbestos-related diseases through education and legislation. ADAO's mission includes supporting global advocacy and advancing asbestos awareness, prevention, early detection, treatment, and resources for asbestos-related disease. For more information visit www.asbestosdiseaseawareness.org. This is clipped from the 1960 film "The Cassiar Road (the story of a mine on a mountain top)." Sponsored by the Cassiar Asbestos Company, the film shows the sponsor's asbestos mines in British Columbia, including showing mining and milling operations, grading, packing and transport to the docks in Skagway, Alaska. The mining and milling operations in British Columbia began in 1953. They ceased operations in 1992, when it went the Company went bankrupt and subsequently dissolved. Cassiar did not itself manufacture or sell any finished products. Instead it sold the raw asbestos fibers to manufacturers, including companies such as Johns-Manville, Fibreboard, and CertainTeed.
