Check out the many useful links below! I find the sample size calculator and social research methods website to be particularly helpful. Research randomizer is not bad either, a quick way to randomize numbers for unbiased samples. Check out the NEW WEBSITE: https://arcologydesigns.com UPDATED BLOG: https://arcologydesigns.blogspot.com There's also some interesting research articles on tax compliance, population density and many other types of data sets that could prove useful. Automatically Search for Excel Data, Display and Print Using VBA

22:05
How to search for an item in another worksheet by entering the item code in a different worksheet, displaying the data related to the item code like quantity and price and finally printing the retrieved data. Also, if the data is not available in our list of items, we create a new worksheet with this data. This gives us a new list of items which are in demand. We use Excel VBA to solve this problem quickly and easily. Details with complete VBA code are available here: http://www.exceltrainingvideos.com/automatically-search-excel-data-display-print-using-vba/ Get the book Excel 2016 Power Programming with VBA: http://amzn.to/2kDP35V If you are from India you can get this book here: http://amzn.to/2jzJGqU

Finding Statistics with STATISTA

04:15
Find, download, and cite statistical reports compiled by Statista, a statistics database accessible through University of Alabama Libraries. Access Statista via University of Alabama Libraries (requires login credentials if off campus): http://libdata.lib.ua.edu/login?url=http://www.statista.com/ University of Alabama Libraries: http://www.lib.ua.edu Ask-A-Librarian: http://www.ask.lib.ua.edu For more help with Statista, see our Guide on the Side tutorial here: http://www.lib.ua.edu/guide_on_the_side/tutorial/statista TRANSCRIPT: Hi, my name is Jon, I’m a librarian at Gorgas Library. This video will show you how to use Statista. Statista is a statistics database that compiles quantitative facts from market research, trade publications, scientific journals, public opinion polls, and government datasets. Information is organized and searched by topic and keyword, kind of like a tags system. You can download individual statistics or entire topical dossiers in various formats, along with the relevant citation information. First we’ll look at how to search for a specific statistic, then we’ll look at how to download and use Statista’s dossiers, which can provide tons of useful data on a broad topic. Let’s start with just a specific question though. Let’s say we need to find out how many homicides were recorded in Sweden last year. (Type in Sweden homicides 2016). Statista found two relevant statistics, listed here. From the titles, you can see what each statistic reports, let’s click on the first one. Here we see a bar graph charting the data. On the side bar we can see our options for downloading this file. More importantly, we can see the “About” section, which describes what is being shown and the Source information, which tells us where the statistic is coming from and how it was collected. It’s important to note that Statista does not produce statistics, they just compile them from other sources and organize them for you. Statistics are collected and published by different groups in different ways for different reasons, so it’s always important to evaluate where the information is coming from. In this case, it’s a division of the Swedish government, so it’s probably reliable. You can usually double-check the source via the links on the “Release” and “Further Info” tabs if need be. Let’s say we want to use this information in a paper. Maybe we want to include the chart or maybe we just want to mention one of the numbers in a sentence. However you use them, statistics should always be cited so the reader can verify where they’ve come from. This menu will produce an appropriate citation in various formats for your Works Cited pages, although always be sure to double-check the output. So we just looked at how to find a particular statistic, now let’s look at the Statista’s dossiers, which are large collections of statistics on broad topics. There are a couple of ways to find these dossiers. You can browse all topics from the top menu. This is a good way of seeing how the information is organized in Statista, and it can also be a way to begin brainstorming if you’re looking for a topic to write about. You can also run a search for a topic. Statista uses a limited vocabulary, so sometimes this can be tricky. For example, if you’re want to write about SEC football you won’t find an entire dossier on the topic, you’ll instead have to back up and search for NCAA and go from there. Depending on what you’re looking for, experimenting with broader and narrower topics and synonyms can be a good strategy. Anyway, let’s run a search for Instagram. Here, our results show about 1000 relevant statistics and 16 relevant dossiers. Let’s click on the first dossier. This page describes the dossier about Instagram. It’s useful to check out the table of contents first. It looks like there might be some useful info in here. We can download it in PDF or Powerpoint format. Dossiers contain a lot of internal links, so Powerpoint is often more convenient. Now that we have the dossier open in Powerpoint, you can click on a link in the table of contents to jump to a particular statistic. Once you’ve found one you want to use, you’ll need to get citation information for it. The links at the bottom of each slide will take you to the individual statistic’s page on Statista, where you can get the citation information and download individual files in whatever format you want. That’s all for now, thanks for watching. If you have any questions, you can call us at 205-348-6048, text us at 205-377-0920, or visit ask.lib.ua.edu to Ask-A-Librarian.

CVPR14: Video Classification using Semantic Concept Co-occurrences

CVPR 2014 paper: Video Classification using Semantic Concept Co-occurrences Authors: Shayan Modiri, Amir Roshan Zamir and Mubarak Shah Link: http://www.cs.ucf.edu/~aroshan/index_files/CVPR14_GMCPclassifier.pdf Abstract:We address the problem of classifying complex videos based on their content. A typical approach to this problem is performing the classification using semantic attributes, commonly termed concepts, which occur in the video. In this paper, we propose a contextual approach to video classification based on Generalized Maximum Clique Problem (GMCP) which uses the co-occurrence of concepts as the context model. To be more specific, we propose to represent a class based on the co-occurrence of its concepts and classify a video based on matching its semantic co-occurrence pattern to each class representation. We perform the matching using GMCP which finds the strongest clique of co-occurring concepts in a video. We argue that, in principal, the co-occurrence of concepts yields a richer representation of a video compared to most of the current approaches. Additionally, we propose a novel optimal solution to GMCP based on Mixed Binary Integer Programming (MBIP). The evaluations show our approach, which opens new opportunities for further research in this direction, outperforms several well established video classification methods.

NDSS 2018 - VulDeePecker: A Deep Learning-Based System for Vulnerability Detection

22:01
Session 3A: Deep Learning and Adversarial ML - 02 VulDeePecker: A Deep Learning-Based System for Vulnerability Detection SUMMARY The automatic detection of software vulnerabilities is an important research problem. However, existing solutions to this problem rely on human experts to define features and often miss many vulnerabilities (i.e., incurring high false negative rate). In this paper, we initiate the study of using deep learning-based vulnerability detection to relieve human experts from the tedious and subjective task of manually defining features. Since deep learning is motivated to deal with problems that are very different from the problem of vulnerability detection, we need some guiding principles for applying deep learning to vulnerability detection. In particular, we need to find representations of software programs that are suitable for deep learning. For this purpose, we propose using code gadgets to represent programs and then transform them into vectors, where a code gadget is a number of (not necessarily consecutive) lines of code that are semantically related to each other. This leads to the design and implementation of a deep learning-based vulnerability detection system, called Vulnerability Deep Pecker (VulDeePecker). In order to evaluate VulDeePecker, we present the first vulnerability dataset for deep learning approaches. Experimental results show that VulDeePecker can achieve much fewer false negatives (with reasonable false positives) than other approaches. We further apply VulDeePecker to 3 software products (namely Xen, Seamonkey, and Libav) and detect 4 vulnerabilities, which are not reported in the National Vulnerability Database but were “silently” patched by the vendors when releasing later versions of these products; in contrast, these vulnerabilities are almost entirely missed by the other vulnerability detection systems we experimented with. BMAW 2014 - Using Bayesian Networks to Identify and Prevent Split Purchases in Brazil

20:46
Presentation given by Rommel N. Carvalho at the 11th Bayesian Modeling Applications Workshop (BMAW 2014) at the 30th Conference on Uncertainty in Artificial Intelligence (UAI 2014) in July 27, 2014, Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. This was a joint work between the Research and Strategic Information Directorate from Brazil's Office of the Comptroller General and the Department of Computer Science from the University of Brasília. Slides: http://www.slideshare.net/rommelnc/bmaw-2014-using-bayesian-networks-to-identify-and-prevent-split-purchases-in-brazil Paper: http://ceur-ws.org/Vol-1218/bmaw2014_paper_7.pdf Title: Using Bayesian Networks to Identify and Prevent Split Purchases in Brazil. Abstract: To cope with society's demand for transparency and corruption prevention, the Brazilian Office of the Comptroller General (CGU) has carried out a number of actions, including: awareness campaigns aimed at the private sector; campaigns to educate the public; research initiatives; and regular inspections and audits of municipalities and states. Although CGU has collected information from various different sources - Revenue Agency, Federal Police, and others -, going through all the data in order to find suspicious transactions has proven to be really challenging. In this paper, we present a Data Mining study applied on real data - government purchases - for finding transactions that might become irregular before they are considered as such in order to act proactively. Moreover, we compare the performance of various Bayesian Network (BN) learning algorithms with different parameters in order to fine tune the learned models and improve their performance. The best result was obtained using the Tree Augmented Network (TAN) algorithm and oversampling the minority class in order to balance the data set. Using a 10-fold cross-validation, the model correctly classified all split purchases, it obtained a ROC area of .999, and its accuracy was 99.197%.

The evolution of webinjects

26:21
This presentation by Jean-Ian Boutin (ESET) was presented at VB2014 in Seattle, WA, USA https://www.virusbtn.com/conference/vb2014/abstracts/Boutin.xml You can read the full paper here: https://www.virusbtn.com/virusbulletin/archive/2014/10/vb201410-Webinjects Webinject files are now ubiquitous in the banking trojan world to aid financial fraud. What started as private and malware-family-dependent code has now blossomed into a full ecosystem where independent coders are selling their services to botnet herders. This specialization phenomenon can be observed in underground forums, where we see a growing number of offers of fully functional webinject packages providing all the functionalities required to bypass the latest security measures implemented by financial institutions. Our research covers the current webinject scene and its commoditization. We will take a look back and show how it has evolved over time, going from simple phishing-like functionalities to automatic transfer system (ATS) and two-factor authentication bypass, along with mobile components and fully fledged web control panels to manage money exfiltration through fraudulent money transfers. Nowadays, a piece of malware that can inject arbitrary HTML content into a browser is all that is needed by a resourceful botmaster, as he can now outsource practically every other step required to perform a successful fraudulent financial transfer. This is confirmed by our recent observation of several malware families using the same webinject kits. Our research will try to answer the question: will we see a consolidation phase leading to the emergence of a few select omnipresent webinject kits, similar to what we have seen in the web exploit kit scene?

Identifying Suspicious URLs: An Application of Large-Scale Online Learning

46:17
Google Tech Talk May 5, 2010 ABSTRACT Presented by Justin Ma. We explore online learning approaches for detecting malicious Web sites (those involved in criminal scams) using lexical and host-based features of the associated URLs. We show that this application is particularly appropriate for online algorithms as the size of the training data is larger than can be efficiently processed in batch and because the distribution of features that typify malicious URLs is changing continuously. Using a real-time system we developed for gathering URL features, combined with a real-time source of labeled URLs from a large Web mail provider, we demonstrate that recently-developed online algorithms can be as accurate as batch techniques, achieving daily classification accuracies up to 99% over a balanced data set. Slides: http://cseweb.ucsd.edu/~jtma/google_talk/jtma-google10.pdf Justin Ma is a PhD candidate at UC San Diego advised by Stefan Savage, Geoff Voelker and Lawrence Saul. His research interests are in systems and networking with an emphasis on network security, and his current focus is the application of machine learning to problems in security. He will be joining UC Berkeley as a postdoc after graduation. [Home page: http://www.cs.ucsd.edu/~jtma/ ]

Mobile: (0) 9952649690, Email: [email protected], web: http://www.jpinfotech.org, Blog: http://www.jpinfotech.blogspot.com Twitter has become one of the largest microblogging platforms for users around the world to share anything happening around them with friends and beyond. A bursty topic in Twitter is one that triggers a surge of relevant tweets within a short period of time, which often reflects important events of mass interest. How to leverage Twitter for early detection of bursty topics has therefore become an important research problem with immense practical value. Despite the wealth of research work on topic modelling and analysis in Twitter, it remains a challenge to detect bursty topics in real-time. As existing methods can hardly scale to handle the task with the tweet stream in real-time, we propose in this paper TopicSketch, a sketch-based topic model together with a set of techniques to achieve real-time detection. We evaluate our solution on a tweet stream with over 30 million tweets. Our experiment results show both efficiency and effectiveness of our approach. Especially it is also demonstrated that TopicSketch on a single machine can potentially handle hundreds of millions tweets per day, which is on the same scale of the total number of daily tweets in Twitter, and present bursty events in finer-granularity.
