How to write the problem statement in your research proposal, manuscript or thesis

05:04
I am going to show you how to captivate your reader so your paper or proposal will be the absolute best. In this video I am going to talk about making the research problem clear. If you are watching this, you probably already know that you need a problem statement. But did you know that articulating your problem statement may actually be the most important step for justifying your research purpose? ~~~~ References Annersten, M., & Wredling, R. (2006). Making a difference through research. AORN Journal, 88(5), 716-6+. doi:10.1016/j.aorn.2008.07.023 ~~~~ Clearly articulating the gap in current knowledge logically leads the reader to how your study will contribute to existing knowledge. This gap is broken down in the background section by critiquing previous research, but you also need to make sure you explicitly outline the gap in a problem statement. Your goal is to make it clear enough that anyone will see the problem the way you do. Make sure you understand what the problem is before you start to write. In order to create a logical argument to study an issue you need to know what the problem is. Your problem should be interesting, clinically significant and feasible. If you aren’t sure what the problem is talk to people in the field because they are the best position to identify meaningful issues in need of study and ask important questions that will impact outcomes. If you pick a problem that aligns with the needs of an organisation or funding agency you are more likely to get funding. ... A general problem statement should be found in the introduction section of a paper. Tell the reader why the topic matters. This statement will lead to the background or literature review, which examines the scope and magnitude of the issue in more detail. The purpose of placing a problem statement in the introduction section of your paper is to catch the reader’s attention early. Your teacher may call this part of the paper or proposal the significance of the issue. ... Before you state the problem you should start by recapping what you just told the reader the current state of knowledge is about your topic within your discipline. Think of this sentence as the lead-in to the problem. Now comes the critical step of articulating the problem that your study will then help to solve. The actual problem statement serves as a clear transition from the literature review to the study purpose. Your purpose or research question will help to solve your problem. Therefore the problem statement and research purpose need to support each other. By the time the reader reaches your purpose they should already have an idea what it will be and know why it is an important. It is also helpful to state the consequences of either filling or not filling the gap in knowledge. If you establish the importance of the issue for your audience here your proposal will be more likely to get the attention of other researchers, key stakeholders or funding agencies. ... Articulating the problem statement is a difficult task. Like the purpose, you should revisit, critique and revise it several times throughout your proposal or paper writing process. Every time you make a decision about the study ask yourself if what you are doing helps to solve your problem and answer your question. ~~~~ http://youstudynursing.com/ Research eBook on Amazon: http://amzn.to/1hB2eBd Check out the links below and SUBSCRIBE for more youtube.com/user/NurseKillam For help with Research - Get my eBook "Research terminology simplified: Paradigms, axiology, ontology, epistemology and methodology" here: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GLH8R9C Related Videos: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLs4oKIDq23AcDWoE3fxbfd37_NXSEDq5w Connect with me on Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/youstudynursing https://www.facebook.com/NursesDeservePraise Twitter: @NurseKillam https://twitter.com/NurseKillam Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/laura.killam LinkedIn: http://ca.linkedin.com/in/laurakillam

Identifying Suspicious URLs: An Application of Large-Scale Online Learning

46:17
Google Tech Talk May 5, 2010 ABSTRACT Presented by Justin Ma. We explore online learning approaches for detecting malicious Web sites (those involved in criminal scams) using lexical and host-based features of the associated URLs. We show that this application is particularly appropriate for online algorithms as the size of the training data is larger than can be efficiently processed in batch and because the distribution of features that typify malicious URLs is changing continuously. Using a real-time system we developed for gathering URL features, combined with a real-time source of labeled URLs from a large Web mail provider, we demonstrate that recently-developed online algorithms can be as accurate as batch techniques, achieving daily classification accuracies up to 99% over a balanced data set. Slides: http://cseweb.ucsd.edu/~jtma/google_talk/jtma-google10.pdf Justin Ma is a PhD candidate at UC San Diego advised by Stefan Savage, Geoff Voelker and Lawrence Saul. His research interests are in systems and networking with an emphasis on network security, and his current focus is the application of machine learning to problems in security. He will be joining UC Berkeley as a postdoc after graduation. [Home page: http://www.cs.ucsd.edu/~jtma/ ]

Automatically Search for Excel Data, Display and Print Using VBA

22:05
How to search for an item in another worksheet by entering the item code in a different worksheet, displaying the data related to the item code like quantity and price and finally printing the retrieved data. Also, if the data is not available in our list of items, we create a new worksheet with this data. This gives us a new list of items which are in demand. We use Excel VBA to solve this problem quickly and easily. Details with complete VBA code are available here: http://www.exceltrainingvideos.com/automatically-search-excel-data-display-print-using-vba/ Get the book Excel 2016 Power Programming with VBA: http://amzn.to/2kDP35V If you are from India you can get this book here: http://amzn.to/2jzJGqU

Pedro Domingos: "The Master Algorithm" | Talks at Google

01:00:47
Machine learning is the automation of discovery, and it is responsible for making our smartphones work, helping Netflix suggest movies for us to watch, and getting presidents elected. But there is a push to use machine learning to do even more—to cure cancer and AIDS and possibly solve every problem humanity has. Domingos is at the very forefront of the search for the Master Algorithm, a universal learner capable of deriving all knowledge—past, present and future—from data. In this book, he lifts the veil on the usually secretive machine learning industry and details the quest for the Master Algorithm, along with the revolutionary implications such a discovery will have on our society. Pedro Domingos is a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Washington, and he is the cofounder of the International Machine Learning Society. https://books.google.com/books/about/The_Master_Algorithm.html?id=glUtrgEACAAJ This Authors at Google talk was hosted by Boris Debic. eBook https://play.google.com/store/books/details/Pedro_Domingos_The_Master_Algorithm?id=CPgqCgAAQBAJ

Knowledge Graphs & Deep Learning at YouTube

19:13
Learn how can you combine Knowledge Graphs and Deep Learning to dramatically improve Search & Discovery systems, just like YouTube does. By using a combination of signals (audiovisual content, title & description and context), it is possible to find the main topics of a video. These topics can then be used to improve collaborative filtering, search, structured browsing (by exploiting the structure of the knowledge graph), ads, and much more. Visualizing Data Using t-SNE

55:10
Google Tech Talk June 24, 2013 (more info below) Presented by Laurens van der Maaten, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands ABSTRACT Visualization techniques are essential tools for every data scientist. Unfortunately, the majority of visualization techniques can only be used to inspect a limited number of variables of interest simultaneously. As a result, these techniques are not suitable for big data that is very high-dimensional. An effective way to visualize high-dimensional data is to represent each data object by a two-dimensional point in such a way that similar objects are represented by nearby points, and that dissimilar objects are represented by distant points. The resulting two-dimensional points can be visualized in a scatter plot. This leads to a map of the data that reveals the underlying structure of the objects, such as the presence of clusters. We present a new technique to embed high-dimensional objects in a two-dimensional map, called t-Distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding (t-SNE), that produces substantially better results than alternative techniques. We demonstrate the value of t-SNE in domains such as computer vision and bioinformatics. In addition, we show how to scale up t-SNE to big data sets with millions of objects, and we present an approach to visualize objects of which the similarities are non-metric (such as semantic similarities). This talk describes joint work with Geoffrey Hinton.

Papers 5: Crowdsourcing - Crowdsourcing descriptions of images on museum websites

16:20
Thursday, February 20th Sala dei Dugento Papers 5: Crowdsourcing Helen Petrie, UK Papers 5: Crowdsourcing - Crowdsourcing descriptions of images on museum websites for visually impaired visitors: developing guidelines and examples of good practice Many museums are now providing thousands of images of items from their collections on their websites. Members of the public, researchers and students use these images for many purposes. However, people with visual impairments, who may be interested in using information from such images, are usually unable to do so, even though they can access other information on the website using text-to-speech technology. Providing descriptions of all the images on a museum website would be a very costly undertaking, so Museum Victoria has been exploring the use of crowdsourcing to solve this issue, asking sighted members of the public to describe images for visually impaired people. One important aspect of such an initiative is how to guide members of the public in describing images appropriately for visually impaired people. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) developed by the World Wide Web Consortium advocate describing images on the Web for visually impaired Web users, but provide no information about what the content of such descriptions should actually be. Other information about how to describe images on the Web for visually impaired people is very scarce, and may not be applicable to museum images. Therefore we have undertaken a series of three studies to develop a set of guidelines and examples of good practice on image description for museum websites, working closely with visually impaired people and experts in visual impairment. Study 1 involved interviews with 17 visually impaired people (aged 29 – 80, 7 women and 10 men) about what kinds of information they would like about images on museum websites. Seven images from the Museum Victoria online collection were described to them and these provided concrete examples on which to base discussions. Analysis of these interviews formed the basis for the first version of a set of guidelines and examples of good practice for image description. One key finding from this study was that the visually impaired participants would like a “short” description to give them a brief overview of the image and a “long” description, for more detail. However, it was not clear how short a “short” description should be or how long a “long” description should be. In Study 2, 11 members of the public with no particular knowledge of visual impairment were asked to read the guidelines and examples of good practice and then provide short and long descriptions of four of the images from the Museum Victoria website (from Study 1). The participants were also asked to comment on the usefulness of the guidelines and examples. The guidelines and examples were also given to six experts in visual impairment for their comments and feedback. For Study 3, the descriptions created in Study 2 were analysed and a series of typical “short” and “long” descriptions of different lengths of the four images were created. These were read to eight of the visually impaired participants from Study 1 and discussed with them. Analysis of Studies 2 and 3 allowed the refinement of the guidelines and examples of good practice.
CVPR14: Video Classification using Semantic Concept Co-occurrences

CVPR 2014 paper: Video Classification using Semantic Concept Co-occurrences Authors: Shayan Modiri, Amir Roshan Zamir and Mubarak Shah Link: http://www.cs.ucf.edu/~aroshan/index_files/CVPR14_GMCPclassifier.pdf Abstract:We address the problem of classifying complex videos based on their content. A typical approach to this problem is performing the classification using semantic attributes, commonly termed concepts, which occur in the video. In this paper, we propose a contextual approach to video classification based on Generalized Maximum Clique Problem (GMCP) which uses the co-occurrence of concepts as the context model. To be more specific, we propose to represent a class based on the co-occurrence of its concepts and classify a video based on matching its semantic co-occurrence pattern to each class representation. We perform the matching using GMCP which finds the strongest clique of co-occurring concepts in a video. We argue that, in principal, the co-occurrence of concepts yields a richer representation of a video compared to most of the current approaches. Additionally, we propose a novel optimal solution to GMCP based on Mixed Binary Integer Programming (MBIP). The evaluations show our approach, which opens new opportunities for further research in this direction, outperforms several well established video classification methods.

Talk slides: http://www.itrummer.org/slides/Vocalization5.pdf Research on data visualization aims at finding the best way to present data via visual interfaces. We introduce the complementary problem of "data vocalization". Our goal is to present relational data in the most efficient way via voice output. This problem setting is motivated by emerging tools and devices (e.g., Google Home, Amazon Echo, Apple's Siri, or voice-based SQL interfaces) that communicate data primarily via audio output to their users.

A bursty topic in Twitter is one that triggers a surge of relevant tweets within a short period of time, which often reflects important events of mass interest. How to leverage Twitter for early detection of bursty topics has therefore become an important research problem with immense practical value. Despite the wealth of research work on topic modelling and analysis in Twitter, it remains a challenge to detect bursty topics in real-time. As existing methods can hardly scale to handle the task with the tweet stream in real-time, we propose in this paper TopicSketch, a sketch-based topic model together with a set of techniques to achieve real-time detection. We evaluate our solution on a tweet stream with over 30 million tweets. Our experiment results show both efficiency and effectiveness of our approach. Especially it is also demonstrated that TopicSketch on a single machine can potentially handle hundreds of millions tweets per day, which is on the same scale of the total number of daily tweets in Twitter, and present bursty events in finer-granularity.
