In this video, you will experience the “warm heart of Africa,” as GIA field gemologists visit Malawi’s Chimwadzulu ruby mine for the very first time. Although this is one of the continent’s oldest-known ruby and sapphire deposits—discovered in 1958—it’s largely unknown to the gem trade or public at large. Malawi is one of the smallest African nations, bounded by Zambia to the northwest, Tanzania to the northeast, and Mozambique to the east, south, and west. The country is separated from Tanzania and Mozambique by the waters of Lake Malawi. “I read about Chimwadzulu a very long time ago…and this is a place I’ve wanted to come to for a very long time,” says GIA Field Gemologist Vincent Pardieu. The deposit’s geology is very complex, he explains, and the mine’s sapphires provide a key to understanding it. Although the Chimwadzulu deposit is known for ruby and orange sapphire, it produces mainly pale green, blue, and yellow sapphire. As always, a core goal of the expedition is to procure samples for GIA’s research programs, but understanding the gems as part of the geology and the mining operation—along with the people who labor to produce it—is also tremendously important. “When you look at the stone, you don’t view it the same way when you have the story of the stone, too,” explains Pardieu. The country is struggling to develop, and ethical stewardship of its gem resources is a part of the solution. Some of the possible benefits to local communities are a hospital and a school funded by the Chimwadzulu mining operation—a consortium between Nyala Mines Ltd. and Columbia Gem House, Inc. Pardieu and his team were able to visit the facility and observe the difference it makes. “In many African countries, the right access to education and health is really a luxury,” remarks Pardieu. “…you’re bringing to these people what is normal for us, but a luxury for them.” They also visited the elementary school, gaining a snapshot of the country’s youth and their boundless potential if Malawi’s resources can be harnessed for the good of all its citizens. This GIA Field Expedition (FE56) took place in September 2014. Besides Pardieu, the participants were cameraman Didier Gruel and field gemologist trainee Stanislas Detroyat.

In Eldoret, Kenya, the harm imposed by substandard or counterfeit medicine is all too real. Unscrupulous manufacturers or distributors replace expensive medicines with cheaper, less effective ones - or even worthless maize meal or chalk. This type of activity is more than fraud; it's a matter of life and death. Each year, counterfeit and substandard medicines kill more than 300,000 people worldwide. In most countries, health care providers lack the financial and technical resources to properly test drugs for authenticity. But new technology being developed by a team led by Professor Marya Lieberman of Notre Dame (http://chemistry.nd.edu/faculty/detail/mlieberm/) and Professor Toni Barstis of Saint Mary's College (https://www.saintmarys.edu/chemistry/pads) can make testing available for just pennies per use. The high-tech paper test cards use colorimetric chemistry to measure the presence of certain ingredients. By simply swiping a pill across the card and dipping the paper into water, distinctive color codes appear within minutes to reveal whether or not a drug is genuine. The research team is inspired by the difference the test cards are making in Kenya, and eager to empower people elsewhere who are victimized by poor quality pharmaceuticals. This technology has the potential to change the economic incentives for buyers and sellers in the pharmaceutical market, ensuring that patients receive the medicine they so desperately need. Field work for this project was made possible by the Eck Institute for Global Health (http://globalhealth.nd.edu/) and its partnership with the Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH). AMPATH (http://www.ampathkenya.org/) consists of the Moi University School of Medicine and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya, and a consortium of North American academic centers, including the University of Notre Dame. These partners began working together in 1989 to deliver health services, conduct health research, and develop health care leaders for North America and Africa. AMPATH serves a population of 3.5 million people in western Kenya in over 500 clinical facilities. It won't be long before they take all real truth off the web for good. Share, Share, Share! Time Is Very Short Now! (SMHP Testimonial & why I posted this video.) I was imprisoned by heavy drug and alcohol addiction for 30 years and had many encounters with demonic spirits. I hung around people in dark places. This stuff is no joke. It gets darker and darker. Please wake up people. The demonic entities just want to use you as host bodies and take your souls. I went to drug rehab when I was 15 for 45 days but started using again within a week of leaving. I was diagnosed with manic bipolar in my twenties and went on and off of antidepressants. No man could give me a solution to my problems. Life kept getting darker and the demonic attacks more frequent. Satan told me I was no good and that Lord God did not love me. Near the end, I knew I would die high as I could not go without using all day. I prayed out to Abba Father. Please Lord save me from these evil addictions. I would blackout every time I used and didn't know if I would end up at the bottom of a pool or run over by a car. Jesus reached down and pulled me from this hell. He is my everything! You can break free from these addictions. Jesus is the chain breaker. It wasn't man that took away my chains but Jesus Christ. He supernaturally shook me to my core over a period of several weeks and my addictions were gone for good. I had a dream that I died and went before Lord God and could not speak to him because I was high on drugs. No one should have to think about this. This is a stronghold over you and people who love you. - SMHP Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. Revelation 3:20 For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had seized him many times; and he was bound with chains and shackles and kept under guard, and yet he would break his bonds and be driven by the demon into the desert. Luke 8:29 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, And He saved them out of their distresses. He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, And broke their chains in pieces. Psalm 107:13-14 This applies to all addictions, not just drugs and alcohol. ............................................. 2010 Pharmakeia Interview with Dr Future (SMHP is not promoting this channel. Virtual Futures presents tech-visionary Vinay Gupta to dicuss cryptocurrencies and the uptake of the blockchain in all its applications. This event is organised in partnership with the Department of Economics at the University of Warwick as part of their 360 Lecture Series. Blockchain, also known as distributed ledger technology, has attracted a great deal of attention due to the hype surrounding cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. Whilst blockchain technology might be able to drive economic change globally, the applications are innumerable. Among others, the implications include empowering impoverished individuals by bypassing banks for payments, generating personalized identities for voting, securing healthcare data, improving supply chain logistics, and allowing business to be carried out transparently. Vinay will share his thoughts on how a technology that permits secure and transparent solutions might transform the next decade. Vinay Gupta is a leading figure in the blockchain space. He is the co-founder of Mattereum, co-ordinated the release of the blockchain platform Ethereum in July 2015, and was strategic architect for ConsenSys, a technology hub focusing on the Ethereum blockchain and related applications. He was the designer of the National Blockchain Strategy for Dubai and is a partner at Hexayurt Capital, the technology-focused VC firm behind the Internet of Agreements. He has been involved in commercial software development since 1992 and his experience as a programmer and visionary has covered fields as diverse as medical imaging, flight simulation, computer graphics, cryptographic applications and the web. Developmental Origins of Brain Circuit Architecture and Psychiatric Disorders (Day 1) Air date: Thursday, November 29, 2018, 8:30:00 AM Category: Conferences Runtime: 07:43:30 Description: Developmental neurobiology is a critical ingredient for understanding the structure and function of the human brain. Classical anatomists recognized that the brain’s component architecture is most accurately seen through the lens of neurodevelopment. This principle has been further applied to understand the brain’s internal connections, capacity for learning, and functional maturation. By drawing together researchers from different fields, this symposium aims to generate healthy discussion and debate on how advances in neurodevelopment have shaped and will continue to shape, our understanding of brain architecture and function, both in health and in psychiatric disorders. While nitrogen is the key component of all agricultural production systems, if used inappropriately, it can pollute waters, lead to greenhouse gas emission and further accelerate climate change. The ability to trace nitrogen as it moves through agricultural ecosystems is therefore essential to maximize its use while protecting the environment. Nitrogen-15, a stable isotope of nitrogen, is an ideal tracer. It can be easily measured in soils, plants, water and air to ensure that agricultural practises are environmentally sustainable and that farmers can minimise the quantity they apply. Presented by the Center for Global Business, sponsored in-part by CIBER, a title VI grant from the U.S. Department of Education, at the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland The Smith School's Center for Global Business convenes its 8th Annual Emerging Markets Forum on the theme of doing business in Africa. Since 2010, this conference series has examined the rise of new economic powers, increased awareness about emerging markets, and disseminated information about how U.S. companies can best succeed there. One of the fastest growing economies in the world, Africa has many countries that have made diversification a priority. Opportunities abound for businesses that understand that trade, not aid, is the road to future prosperity. Expert speakers from business, academia and policy will discuss the opportunities as well as challenges of doing business in Africa, including: ● Which countries are reforming and growing fastest? ● Which sectors are the most promising (now and in the future)? ● What opportunities have drawn U.S. businesses to Africa? ● What challenges do they face, and how have they overcome these challenges?

McGill University Centre of Genomics & Policy Director Dr. Bartha Maria Knoppers present a webinar titled, "Ethical Issues in Data Science." Abstract Big Data discussions often center on related privacy and security issues, to the neglect of the importance of other ethical issues in data-intensive research. The privacy protections in the European Union’s new General Data Protection Regulation, for example, although essential, must be balanced with the right of everyone to share in scientific advancement and its benefits, which originates in the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights and has become the foundation of the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health's Framework for Responsible Sharing of Genomic and Health-Related Data. In this context, it is worthwhile examining whether the hitherto antinomy between privacy and security concerns and the benefits of data sharing still remains, or are health data governance frameworks, such as the 2017 OECD Recommendation on Health Data Governance, and other policies beginning to address and assuage such concerns? Presenter Bartha Maria Knoppers, PhD (Comparative Medical Law), is full professor, Canada Research Chair in law and medicine and Director of the Centre of Genomics and Policy, Faculty of Medicine, Human Genetics, at McGill University. She is a member of the Scientific Steering Committee of the International Cancer Genome Consortium (2009-present ), and Co-Chair of the Regulatory and Ethics Working Group of the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health. She holds four doctorates Honoris Causa and she is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the Hastings Center (bioethics), the Canadian Academy Health Sciences (CAHS), and of the Royal Society of Canada. She is also an Officer of the Order of Canada and of Quebec.
