China's Centuries Old Underground Coal Fires | China Uncensored
Underground coal seam fires have been raging underneath China for not decades, but hundreds, even thousands of years. The coal spews out toxic columns of mercury, lead, arsenic, carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide and temperatures can sore to 1000 degrees Fahrenheit. And they're next to impossible to put out. It's one of the most dangerous environmental disasters plaguing the planet, and few have ever heard of it. All it takes is a single spark to turn a coalmine into a deadly inferno. Today Tonight - New Zealand recruitment for the mines
Recruitment company Reciprocus has been paid to find 60,000 New Zealanders to take high paying fly in, fly out jobs in the mining industry. Recruiter Sarina Russo says that Australians should be offered an opportunity before sourcing workers from overseas. The mining industry is like any other industry -- You can't just walk-in-the-door. You need to train up. We all need to think differently on how we train people, particularly those with no previous work experience in the mines. Australian workers should be concerned that if they don't upskill jobs will be taken by skilled New Zealanders. They need to be prepared to go where the gold is and take a shovel with them not a teaspoon. They should be creative to get a foot in the door. The work opportunities in the service sector around a mine are huge -- cleaners, cooks, traffic control etc. There are many examples of catering staff getting the relevant training and moving directly into mine work.

Copper mines in Zambia - Straight through Africa
Trade is better than aid for Africa. They say. In a journey through copper thieves and mine barons in the north of Zambia, Bram Vermeulen investigates the truth behind that slogan. From a distance they look like ants, the hundreds of men digging holes in the rubble slopes of an old copper mine in Zambia. They are looking for copper ore in the walls of the enormous pit, without wearing helmets and without reinforcing the walls of their caves. Life-threatening, of course. But they find enough to live on. Is it legal, Bram asks. They laugh about it. No of course not. But the Chinese buyer does not really ask where they get their ore from. You just have to leave when the guards of the mine come. How different is it in a huge copper mine in full operation. Huge machines drive off and on. Sirens sound regularly, followed by explosions. Here, 300,000 tons of stone are moved every day, and the copper ore from it yields a profit of hundreds of millions of dollars a year. But it is a foreign company that raises that money. And if the productivity gets too low after about twenty years, the investors will move on. From the air it is easy to see how far-reaching it all is. The mine takes big chores out of the country and turns huge plains into a kind of lunar landscape. But other changes are also visible. Houses, schools, a golf course. Prosperity, therefore, emphasizes a mine boss. Seven years ago this was still a dull provincial town, and now look! A little further on the big changes are about to begin. There is a giant copper mine here, and for that an area of no less than four hundred square kilometers is expropriated. The new owners promise economic prosperity. Did not a city like Johannesburg also start out as a simple mine? Naturally, people living in the area can not stay. They have worked the land for generations, but they can not show ownership documents. They have not been asked anything. They do get compensation for their houses, chickens and fruit trees, but not for the ground. "Everything under the ground is state property," says a representative of the mining company, "and that is what the state can rent out to us." Residents who do not want to leave are squatters who violate the law from that moment on. Even though they were born and lived there all their lives. Those former residents are moved to neat new houses outside the area. With toilet, and bigger than the previous house, but without land to grow food. Some of them seem satisfied with that. Most do not. 'In Africa, land has sentimental value. You are no one without land, 'says one of them. "So you're destroying these people. They will not pass on anything to the next generation. " Episode 6. Copper fever  For Africa, trade is better than aid, or so they say. On a journey to copper thieves and mine bosses, Bram Vermeulen investigates the truth behind the slogan. Coal industry responds to foreign ownership report
Australian Coal Association executive director Ralph Hillman joins Lateline to discuss the Greens-commissioned report on foreign ownership.
Joint development of N. Korean mines could generate 90,000 jobs yearly: report
"북한 주요광산 남북 공동개발시 연간 9만명 일자리 창출가능" A report by a private research institute shows that if the two Koreas were to jointly develop the mining industry in North Korea, it could create more than 90-thousand jobs a year. The Seoul-based North Korea Resources Institute says... out of some 700 mines projected to be in North Korea, it based its estimate on information about 74 North Korean mines that have deposits of 11 minerals including coal, iron ore and gold. Apart from job growth, it says the project could help reduce South Korea's reliance on imports... and significantly raise its self-sufficiency in those minerals to above 40 percent from the current level of less than three percent.

Coal mining in the Netherlands 1100-1974
Coal mining in the Netherlands 1100-1974 Coal mining in Limburg, a province of the Netherlands, has taken place since the 16th century. Near the Augustinian Abbey of Rolduc, coal is found very close to the surface. The abbey owned the coal, and beginning in the 16th century hired local miners to extract the coal for sale as fuel. The true extent of the coal reserves in the south-east corner of Limburg first became apparent in 1870, when the wealthy Count Marchant and Ansembourg of Brussels ordered the first boreholes to be drilled near Eygelshoven, and a substantial seam of coal was found at a depth of 154 metres. The demand for coal had grown explosively as a result of increased industrialization and urban expansion, but the national governments regarded any form of interference in the extraction and sale of this fuel as unnecessary. Thus it came about that the first concessions for the extraction of coal in South Limburg were granted without hesitation to foreign firms, although most of the coal consumed in the Netherlands was imported from Germany, and Dutch investors preferred to invest their capital in foreign countries, such as in Russian government loans, American railways, and Hungarian waterworks.

Resolute Mining's Syama Gold Mine DFS Update shows substantially reduced costs
Resolute Mining Ltd (ASX:RSG) managing director and chief executive John Welborn talks Proactive Investors through the multinational gold producer’s definitive feasibility study (DFS) update on the flagship Syama Gold Mine in Mali. The update includes a reserve upgrade, and demonstrates a material reduction in the all-in sustaining costs across the whole life of the mine, which has been extended by four years. "We've been doing a lot of work primarily on implementing automation as part of our underground mine, improving our power infrastructure at Syama, and continuing our processing journey to get higher recoveries from the ore. And all of that's come through in a really exciting announcement today," says Welborn. Sandvik has been appointed to manage the automation process at Syama.

South Africa's Illegal Gold Mines
In the 1970s, South Africa was the world's most prolific exporter of gold. Over the years, industrial decline has seen widespread closures of the mines across the country. However, Johannesburg sits on the biggest gold basin ever discovered. It's perhaps not surprising that many of these abandoned mines have seen a recent boom in illegal mining activity. Everyday, hundreds of illegal gold miners, known as Zama Zamas, descend kilometers deep beneath the surface. The miners often spend weeks underground, toiling away at the country's untapped gold reserves. Observers have suggested that illegal mining is now so widespread, black-market gold arguably supports the communities once subsistent on the very same mines they worked in before they shut down. The lack of policing in the mines has seen the practice go on largely unabated. However, in the absence of law enforcement, the extensive network of abandoned mines beneath the region has become an arena to deadly gang warfare between rival factions. VICE News visited illegal mines near Johannesburg, to meet the Zama Zamas risking life and limb everyday in the violent struggle for South Africa's illegal gold. English/Nat Rescue workers have started the grim task of lifting the bodies of at least 100 men killed in a gold mine accident in South Africa. They died on Wednesday when a locomotive plunged onto an elevator cage carrying workers on the night shift at the mine in Orkney. Some of the dead are thought to be from neighbouring countries, including Mozambique. Bodies are being brought up from the mine shaft in Orkney, where some 100 gold miners plunged to their deaths after a train fell on top of their elevator. Miners watched in shock as rescue workers carried mangled bodies and pieces of bodies wrapped in wool blankets out of the mine. Witnesses at the scene said survivors seemed impossible, since the two-floor lift fell 1.4 miles (2 kms) below the surface. The accident at the mine happened at the end of the night shift when workers piled into the elevator for the long ride to the surface. The elevator cable snapped and the cage fell to the bottom of the shaft - 2-thousand-3-hundred meters below the surface - where it was squashed to half its normal size by the weight of the locomotive. SOUNDBITE: "These two vehicles plunging down the shaft caught up with the cage, hit it with such intensity that the rope detached from the cage and the cage, fully loaded fell some 450 meters down the shaft to the bottom." SUPERCAPTION: Dick Fisher, Regional general manager President Nelson Mandela expressed shock at the accident. SOUNDBITE: "Apart from regretting the incident, I think we should suspend any firm comment until all the facts have been fully put before us." SUPERCAPTION: Nelson Mandela, South African President Union leaders called for an independent investigation, including foreign experts, to determine the cause. SOUNDBITE: The pointers already are very clear that there was gross negligence...It is a requirement that when a shift is hoisted there must be no loco in the shaft area." Illegal coal in Ukraine sold to state mines
Coal from illegal mines is being sold on the Ukranian black market, with up to ten million tons being produced a year. The illegal coal business in Ukraine is big business but it kills hundreds of miners every year. Now the coal is being sold to the state mines on the black market. Al Jazeera's David Chater reports from Donetsk.

Mine Rescue Team 1926 US Bureau of Mines
In the early days of the Bureau of Mines, mine rescuers were called "helmet men" or "apparatus men." Their chief work was to investigate the cause of a mine disaster as quickly as possible, to assist in the rescue of miners, give first aid, and train miners in first aid and mine rescue techniques. Persons receiving first aid training were instructed and examined in the anatomy of the human body, the treatment of hemorrhage, fractures, burns, and shock, and the transport of wounded persons. Certificates of rescue training were given to persons who passed a physical examination, showed ability to wear breathing apparatus while doing hard labor in atmospheres containing noxious or irrespirable gases, demonstrated their ability to adjust and take care of breathing apparatus, and perform the duties of rescue men. Poisonous gases were a serious danger to rescuers after a mine explosion. Early mine rescue men used the Draeger breathing apparatus imported from Germany, or the Fleuss or "Proto" apparatus imported from England. Development and tests of the Gibbs apparatus were completed by the Bureau of Mines in 1918, and made the United States independent of foreign makers of apparatus. Mining laws in developed countries require trained, properly-equipped mine rescue personnel to be available at all mining operations at both surface and underground mining operations. These personnel make up what is known as a "Mine rescue team". Mine rescue teams must know the procedures used to rescue miners trapped by various hazards, including fires, explosions, cave-ins, toxic gas, smoke inhalation, and water entering the mine. As mine rescue is particularly dangerous work, rescue crews are usually made up of volunteers who risk their own lives to save their fellow workers. Most mine rescue teams are composed of miners who know the particular mine, and are familiar with the various sorts of mine machinery they may encounter during the rescue, the layout of workings and geological conditions and working practices. Local and state governments may also have teams on call ready to respond to mine accidents. Mine rescue teams are trained in first aid and the use of a wide variety of tools, and, in the case of underground rescues, the operation of SCBA breathing sets (to work in passages filled with mine gases such as firedamp, afterdamp, chokedamp, and sometimes shallow submersion). For more on the history of mine rescue in the United States, go to http://www.msha.gov/CENTURY/RESCUE/RSTART.asp. This is clipped from the 1926 film by the US Bureau of Mines titled, Oxygen Breathing Apparatus, made with the cooperation of the Peabody Coal Company. The film shows the kinds of breathing apparatus used in mine rescues and explains their various parts. A mine rescue team explores a mine, testing for low oxygen content and carbon monoxide. The entire film is posted to my channel. This US Bureau of Mines film and many others are available at the US National Archive in College Park, Maryland.

Coal Production
Coal is a vital munition of war and Movietone has gone underground to see the miners at work. The importance of coal in the war effort is reflected in the fact that the army has released many good soldiers to return to the mines. Boys are being taught the craft and young men between 18 and 25 are being given the choice of mining or joining the forces. Job cuts loom in the mining sector
We zoom in on the mining sector, that has been under pressure. You'll remember that Implats announced recently it may have to cut more jobs due to the economic conditions. Well, mining production fell in South Africa in May according to figures out today. It fell meaning the mining sector contracted by 2.6 percent in May, after falling by 4.4 percent in April and a shocking fall of more than 8 percent a month before that. That's three months of contraction - although the figure was better than expected. Manufacturing data rose and maybe that's helping the Rand today. It has gained a full 2 per cent against the dollar as the concerns around the global trade war ease again. In a moment we'll be speaking to Mike Schussler about putting this data in context. And the context is that there have been signs of late that there could be a recession in South Africa. Remember the economy contracted in the first quarter. Could there be another contraction or is the fact that today's data is better than expected meaning we're out of the woods? For more news, visit: sabcnews.com

Coober Pedy: Would You Live Underground? - Black Pepper Abroad Ep. 048
The folks here actually live underground in what they call dugouts. What better way to look for opals than to dig a hole into the side of a cliff and call it home. When you stop to think about it, it does make a lot of sense. Coober Pedy is hot and dry nearly all year long. Underground the temperature remains a constant 20C to 25C degrees and very little building materials are required when you dig out each room. This lifestyle is not for everyone which Agnes makes very clear :) Coober Pedy is an odd mining town which has grown into a huge tourist attraction. Movies about distant planets have been filmed here (Pitch Black), you can play golf in the desert and attend church underground. If you're into opals, then this is the town for you. There are plenty of opals for sale and you can learn all about the mining process in Coober Pedy. It was a great place to turn 32 years old in! Join the Adventure! 2 New Coal Mines Follow $90mil Investment
Coal developer Ramaco Development and partners announced Tuesday, a $90 million investment that runs against the trend of coal bankruptcies and mine closures should enable two new coal mines and related facilities to open in West Virginia and Virginia next year. The mines would extract metallurgical coal. That type is used for steel production and most mined in the U.S. is exported overseas. Ramaco CEO Randall Atkins told The Associated Press, Kentucky-based Ramaco's partnership with two private equity firms will directly create some 400 jobs. http://hosted2.ap.org/APDEFAULT/386c25518f464186bf7a2ac026580ce7/Article_2016-09-06-US--New%20Coal%20Mines/id-64fa6b884b874fc18399f2d5ba6c14b3 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Open Pit Gold Mining
Gold is now primarily found in very low concentrations. Open pit mines, like the one shown in this video, process tons of rock in order to extract just a few ounces. This process is extremely damaging to the environment. Canadian company closes two Somerset County mine
Reported by: Jackalyn Kovac SOMERSET, Pa. -- Over 100 people are without a job after a Canadian company decided to close two Somerset County mines. The company said coal prices are a seven-year low and these two mines weren't as profitable. After a merger last year, two Somerset County mines were placed under management review for closure. On Friday, both mines, Kimberly Run and Barbara mines, were closed and workers were told they no longer had a job. In a press release on the company's website Friday, they blamed weakness in global metallurgical coal markets as a reason to eliminate 130 jobs. The company said a number of other employees were transferred to neighboring mines that are also the least expensive to operate for the company ‚" the Casselman and the Quecreek. In that press release, the company's chief executive officer said: "We regret the need to take today's actions, however, we anticipate these moves will improve the overall construction of the Northern Appalachian Division while still maintaining premium, quality, metallurgical coal specifications." The number of jobs lost is about 25 percent of the company's Northern Appalachian Division. The company told 6 News they hope to rehire some of these workers once the prices of market goes back up.

British Columbia to import low-wage miners from China
Liberal leader Christy Clark touts coal mining as a jobs machine for British Columbia. Too bad many of those jobs will go to low-wage workers imported from China. HD Mining is backed by Chinese investment. The company plans to operate a mine near Tumbler Ridge. HD Mining claimed it couldn't find qualified Canadians. Maybe this was because its job adverts required Mandarin skills. Meanwhile, the Chinese miners are only required to know 100 English words. And they are willing to work for peanuts compared with their Canadian counterparts. The government has already approved 201 Chinese miners to work at Tumbler Ridge on a temporary basis. But as many as 2,000 Chinese miners could be expected to work at the mine eventually. Of course, you get what you pay for. Chinese mines are the most dangerous in the world. Last year, about 2,000 miners died in accidents. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Daily videos brought to you by THE Taiwanese Animators behind the infamous Tiger Woods animation.
