The Kimberly Diamond Mine Museum in South Africa. This is where diamonds were discovered in 1879. De Beers eventually stopped mining the pit which was allowed to fill with water and dug shafts down into the diamond-bearing rocks below. They stopped mining altogether in 1914 and this is now part of a museum. The city of Kimberly is on the horizon. De Beers headquarters is still in Kimberly.

Here goes the full length version of our trip to Gizzy. Lots of time in and around water. Gisborne is a small seaside city with a relaxed way of life, with cool people who love and are very talented at their water sports. Because the main State Highway bypasses this location it is often missed by our foreign visitors, which is a shame because there is so much more to see and do here and all the way up the East Coast of the North Island of NZ. I was only in town for two days to compile this video, however there are still good wine tours, a cool little museum if you're into that type of stuff. But most importantly this location (including the entire East Coast) has a rich heritage of Maori culture that can be sought out if you look hard enough. Visit to Botallack Mine April 2014. The Botallack Mine is in west Cornwall, United Kingdom. The village is in a former tin mining area situated between the town of St Just in Penwith and the village of Pendeen. Crown Mines, former tin mines, are low down the cliffs north of Botallack. There are two engine houses here and the mine extends for about 400 metres out under the Atlantic ocean; the deepest shaft is 250 fathoms (about 500m) below sea level. The mine ruins in the area are protected by the National Trust. There are two arsenic works opposite the Botallack Mine count house. At the top of the cliffs there are also the remains of one of the mine's arsenic-refining works. The BBC television series Poldark was filmed partly in Botallack, using Manor Farm as Nampara. The mining developments around Botallack form part of the St Just mining district's successful inclusion in the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage site which was approved in July 2006. And yet, like the Concorde, the huge iconic 'Mountbatten-class' hovercraft that once traversed the 22-mile English Channel from England to France carrying hundreds or passengers and cars are no longer with us. For more information visit http://www.asiatravel.com Perth /pɜrθ/ is the capital and largest city of the Australian state of Western Australia. It is the fourth most populous city in Australia, with an estimated population of 1.9 million living in Greater Perth. Part of the South West Land Division of Western Australia, the majority of the metropolitan area of Perth is located on the Swan Coastal Plain, a narrow strip between the Indian Ocean and the Darling Scarp, a low coastal escarpment. The first areas settled were on the Swan River, with the city's central business district and port (Fremantle) both located on its shores. Perth's metropolitan area is formally divided into a number of local government areas, which themselves consist of a large number of suburbs, extending from Two Rocks in the north to Rockingham in the south, and east inland to The Lakes. Perth was originally founded by Captain James Stirling in 1829 as the administrative centre of the Swan River Colony, and gained city status in 1856 (currently vested in the smaller City of Perth). The city is named for Perth, Scotland, by influence of Sir George Murray, then British Secretary of State for War and the Colonies. The city's population increased substantially as a result of the Western Australian gold rushes in the late 19th century, largely as a result of emigration from the eastern colonies of Australia. During Australia's involvement in World War II, Fremantle served as a base for submarines operating in the Pacific Theatre. An influx of immigrants following the conclusion of the war was followed by a surge in economic activity as a result of several mining booms in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, with Perth becoming the regional headquarters for a number of mining operations located around the state. As part of Perth's role as the capital of Western Australia, the state's Parliament and Supreme Court are located within the city, as well as Government House, the residence of the Governor of Western Australia. Perth became known worldwide as the "City of Light" when city residents lit their house lights and streetlights as American astronaut John Glenn passed overhead while orbiting the earth on Friendship 7 in 1962. The city repeated the act as Glenn passed overhead on the Space Shuttle in 1998. Perth came 9th in the Economist Intelligence Unit's August 2012 list of the world's most liveable cities, and was classified by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network in 2010 as a world city. Perth Cultural Centre is both an area of central Perth and the collective name for the main buildings of the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Western Australian Museum, Alexander Library, State Records Office and Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA). In addition to the Perth Cultural Centre a number of other venues within the city exist including the State Theatre - home to the Black Swan State Theatre Company in Northbrige, His Majesty's Theatre, Perth in the City and the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre on the foreshore. The Perth International Arts Festival is a cultural festival that has been held annually since 1953, and has since been expanded to include the Winter Arts festival. In recent years this has been developed further to include the Perth Fringe Festival, which runs throughout the city in the lead up to the Perth International Arts Festival. Kings Park, located in central Perth between the CBD and the University of Western Australia, is the largest inner-city park in the world, at 4.06 square kilometres. Perth Zoo, located in South Perth, houses a variety of Australian and exotic animals from around the globe. The zoo is home to highly successful breeding programs for orangutans and giraffes, and participates in captive breeding and reintroduction efforts for a number of Western Australian species, including the numbat, the dibbler, the chuditch, and the western swamp tortoise. We went for a day trip to Nazaré hoping to see some giant waves, unfortunatly, nothing, it was a quiet day in the record-breaking giant wave spot. It is one of the most popular seaside resorts in the Silver Coast/Costa de Prata, Portugal. The population in 2011 was 15,158, in an area of 82.43 km². The town consists of three neighbourhoods: Praia (along the beach), Sítio (an old village, on top of a cliff) and Pederneira (another old village, on a hilltop). Praia and Sítio are linked by the Nazaré Funicular, a funicular railway. In November 2011, surfer Garrett McNamara, who resides in Hawai'i, surfed a record-breaking giant wave: 78 feet (23.8 m) from trough to crest, at Nazaré. On 28 January 2013, McNamara returned to the spot and successfully surfed a wave that appeared even larger, but is awaiting an official measurement. Then, on October 28, 2013, Carlos Burle surfed another wave that is currently being scrutinized as possibly the largest wave ever ridden. On that same day, female big-wave surfer Maya Gabeira experienced a near-death wipeout, but was rescued after losing consciousness. Such very high breaking waves form due to the presence of the underwater Nazaré Canyon. The canyon creates constructive interference between incoming swell waves which tends to make the waves much larger. In August 2012, a freak wave killed a 5 year old British girl and her grandfather walking along Salgado Beach. I’m a Bedouin and I was born in one of the caves in the nature reserve of Petra. The Wadi Araba Desert is very important and it’s been here for thousands of years, even before Christ. People used to travel in caravans though the streets of the canyon to bring bronze from the mines to Petra. Only people who know the desert very well can live in it. Bedouins know its secrets and are able to move without the need of a map. They know the desert is not just moving sand with no life and no water. The desert has water, green and trees, and lots of animals like snakes, scorpions, ants, hyenas, and wolfs. Bedouins always live close to water sources to feed their animals and to grow vegetables like tomatoes, melons, and potatoes. Nowadays most Bedouin families own a car so they can drive to the big city to buy food, water, and other supplies. The territory around my cave has lots of green areas. There are lots of juniper trees, oaks, and wild pistachios. Back in the day, the Bedouins used the fruits of the juniper trees to make tea or as spices. They liked to use many herbs, for everyday use and for medicinal purposes. Bedouins always cook on fire made with dry wood, especially juniper wood which gives the food a very special aroma. A very typical Bedouin drink is black tea, which must boil until it has a very dark color. When the tea is ready, they add lots of sugar and aromatic herbs. The Mansaf is a very important Bedouin dish which used to be prepared with goat meat cooked in goat milk or cheese. Today we normally cook chicken with spices and herbs, goat cheese or yogurt. We place flat bread on a dish, spread boiled white rice on top and place the cooked meat in the middle”. My cave is located 8km from Petra in a nature reserve. There are many herbs and trees that grow in the area, for example aloe vera which is used to cure burns, sage and mint which are commonly used for tea, and oregano is especially common in breakfast dishes. The cave is more than two thousand years old, carved by hand. My grandfather grew up here just like me. The ceiling of the cave is black because back in the day people used lots of fire to cook and stay warm. I painted the walls a lighter color so that the room gets more light during the day. The floor is covered with carpets and cushions, and camel saddles are used as armrest for two people who are sitting next to each other. Bedouins used oil lamps to illuminate the cave at night. In the morning I go to the village to work but I always come back to the cave, usually before sunset to enjoy the beautiful view. I have a small cooking area and a place for my books and other possessions. The stairs that are carved on the side of the cave lead up to the terrace, which was used to control the area and protect it from possible enemies. In ancient times these mountains were used by the Romans, the Byzantine, and the Nabataeans to make wine and other alcoholic beverages, especially using wild fig trees. Sea Lions Sea Lions have long been associated with friendly interactions with humans, so much so that they form a large part of Peruvian culture- having been worshipped by the people there and depicted in numerous artworks. They are highly intelligent animals, which means they can learn tricks to entertain crowds, and are quite curious so they will often swim up alongside humans and play with them in the water. They are also used by the US military to assist SCUBA diving teams look for underwater mines and, in some instances, detain divers who have accessed restricted areas until authorities can arrive. Sea lions and dolphins are used as combat marine units and sea lions especially, have excellent eyesight. Sea lions are hardy, smart, and trainable and they have the added advantage that they are amphibious and can easily hand things to their handlers. This all makes Sea Lions sound like gentle creatures, but it’s important to know that sea lions have another side to them. If they aren’t treated well or respectfully, they can become quite aggressive. This can also happen with male Sea Lions because they are very territorial during mating season. If it looks like you’re bothering one then stay away but, if not, they are one of the friendliest sea creatures you’ll ever meet. 9. Beluga Whale Beluga Whales are native to the Arctic and sub-arctic, and are uniquely adapted to the cold waters. They are white in color, don’t have a dorsal fin, and have an enlarged head, which contains an organ called a melon that is used for echolocation. Beluga’s were actually the first type of whale to be kept in captivity, with the first being shown at Barnum’s museum in New York in 1861. To this day they are still the most commonly seen animal in marine parks across North America, Europe and Asia- mainly because they are much smaller than other species of whale and easier to contain. They are also a hit with visitors because of their unusual colour and wide range of facial expressions. They are really curious about the people who visit them, and often perform in shows with trainers who they develop deep bonds with. Since 1992 it has been forbidden to capture Belugas in Canada because of concerns for the population numbers in the wild, so now most of them come from Russia. They are so popular that each one can cost as much as 100,000 dollars. Whale watching tours are a great way to see them in their natural habitat, but it’s important for the boat not to get too close to them because of the way it can interrupt their daily activities. Quite often they enjoy interacting with the boats so much that they get distracted from things like feeding, social interaction with their own species, and breeding. They get so caught up in the moment, they forget what they’re supposed to be doing!! 8. Whale Shark You might not think a shark with a five-foot-wide mouth and more than 3,000 teeth would be the friendliest of creatures, but whale sharks are the most gentle of all shark species. They pose no threat to humans at all, and are usually pretty welcoming to those who want to swim alongside them. Despite their huge mouth, their throats are only the width of a US quarter, and they only eat tiny micro-organisms. Their average speed through the water is about 3 miles per hour, so they are easy to keep up with, and in a lot of tourist areas they are used to the presence of humans in the water, and don’t really seem to be bothered. Cancun is one of the best places to swim with these giants of the ocean, where you’ll really feel small next to a 65-foot-long and 12 ton fish. There really is nothing quite like being surrounded by a few of them, and the experience draws tourists from all over the world. If you visit “Las Afueras” you’ll even have a chance to be amongst a feeding frenzy of hundreds of them, which is a spectacular feat of nature. 7. Manatees Manatees, or sea cows, are also known as gentle giants, and it’s clear to see why. They are fully aquatic and feed mainly on plant life that they sift from the water. They can grow to up to 13-feet-long, weigh about 1,300 pounds, and push their way through the water with their paddle like limbs. The Bosnian war ended in 1995, but ever since the conflict has claimed lives. More than 600 people have died since...from unexploded landmines. Now with the worst flooding in over 120 years Serbia and Bosnia are faced with a new danger - the mines have crept out of their designated areas, and nowhere is safe again in poor areas which need agriculture and forestry to survive. I was fortunate enough to tour the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota. The SURF hosted a robotics competition coordinated by Black Hills State University. The competition was the culmination of the season for students from Spearfish Middle School and from Belle Fourche Middle School. I live in Lead and think it is amazing that experiments conducted in this very facility by Raymond Davis Jr., along with two other scientists, resulted in the 2002 Nobel Prize for Physics "for pioneering contributions to astrophysics, in particular for the detection of cosmic neutrinos." Physicists from around the world continue conducting ground-breaking experiments that contribute to our understanding of the origins of the universe in what is described as the "quietest place on earth."

chance & change 17 June, 2017 - 4 February, 2018; MUSAC Hall 2 chance & change is the first individual exhibition in Spain of the Dutch artist herman de vries (Alkmaar, The Netherlands, 1931). This retrospective show spans an extensive period of more than fifty years, and includes early “informal” works as well as site-specific productions where nature is presented as the work of art itself. As a member of the avant-garde group Nul and of the international network ZERO in the 50s, de vries searched for new relations between art and reality, fleeing from colorful expressionism to adopt an absence of a personal signature. He found this neutrality in monochrome, in repetition and seriality and in the direct use of everyday materials and objects. As a result, he created collages of white paper on a white background, white sculptures or white paintings. These white works had an intention of pure objectivity, one of the principles of the ZERO group. However, his fascination with the natural world, accompanied by a growing interest in language and philosophy, especially Ludwig Wittgenstein’s Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, as well as Buddhist or Taoist writings, have influenced his later works without leaving the spirit of ZERO. Trained as a horticulturist, de vries worked at the Institute for Applied Biological Research in Nature at Arnhem, The Netherlands, as an applied biologist for over sixteen years. During this time, he had to make experiments using the concept of chance in order to determine aspects such as the distribution of natural elements, mineral deposits and plant and animal life. Thus surged the series random objectivations, that pretended to eradicate everything personal or subjective—principles that his informal works already advocated—using the concept of chance as it is applied in scientific experiments. In 1975, de vries concluded that no model or reproduction can be as complex as to be able to represent the complexity of nature. From that moment on, de vries started to live in accordance with his ideas about the order of nature where he co-exists without hierarchy. Thus, he decided to write his name in lower case as an expression of his belief in equality and his opposition to any hierarchy. de vries feels one with nature which he considers his primary reality and on which human existence is based on. 1 and 3 hours beneath my apple tree (1975) is the earliest work where de vries tries to demonstrate the principle of randomness as it is obtained in nature. He fixed the leaves as they had fallen from his apple tree, in a seemingly random configuration, making visible that which people do not normally see: randomness and chance. chance & change is thus de vries’s dynamic version of the principle of evolution, taking into account not only the development but also the variation of the species. A variation that is present in all of nature, and which he presents in works such as bamboo (2014), die steine [stones from the province of león] (2017) or even in tools such as the sickles (from spain) (2017). de vries works on the idea of chance & change as an artist, scientist, philosopher and poet, and believes that existence depends on “chance fields.” This chance field may be a tiny parcel of 16dm2 earth where 472 different types of plants can be found. Change creates possibilities of chance; chance creates possibilities of change. Nothing is permanent, everything evolves. Like the huge trunks of a burned tree in burned III (2014-2015), transformed and metamorphosed by fire to become shiny, black sculptures. His work process becomes evident in the journals that he produces from his travels or walks, such as the journals de la gomera or knetzberg, composed of samples of different objects, natural elements or photographs of these places that form a visual record of an experience. However, more than visual, his work is a total sensory experience that pervades us with the different colors of the earth like in the catalogue earth museum (1978-2016), the smell of humulus lupulus (from carrizo de la ribera, león) (2017), or the sound of the artist’s respiration in hear my breath – i am alive (2016). Curatorship: Kristine Guzmán Coordination: Raquel Álvarez Filmed and directed by: Vince de Vries Locations: Eschenau (Germany), León (Spain), Gavdos (Greece), Digne-Les-Bains (France), Camperduin (The Netherlands), Bogor (Indonesia) Audio recording of herman's breath: Lutz Oldemeier
