But in Botswana, it's a different story. The diamond has transformed Botswana from one of the poorest countries in the world, to one of the most prosperous and stable countries in Africa. An inspiring initiative has seen Botswana's vast diamond reserves, worth about three billion US dollars a year, being used to share wealth throughout the nation. Trade Consultant Ntetleng Masisi says they used diamonds to bring about health facilities, education and a markedly improved quality of life. "The earnings from our exports of diamonds have really done a lot for us." But Botswana's reliance on diamond revenue means that the whole of the country's future is now in the hands of the diamond dealers . With shocking evidence now uncovered, Zimbabwe's diamond trade faces suspension. "We were told here are the guns, sitting in the truck, do you want to stay?" says Andrew Cranswick, CEO of the mining company who owns the rights to mine diamonds in Marange. After his company was evicted, the Marange fields were opened up to the people and tens of thousands of Zimbabweans came to dig, paying the police a commission. Yet the police didn't always play fair - "$15 million worth of diamonds were confiscated", says one former miner and soon the police were replaced by Mugabes own military. "Mugabe needed a way to buy the loyalty of the army" says Ken Roth, "the military were ordered to kill". In the first week of November, helicopter gunships launched a massacre on the Marange diamond fields. Evidence has been collected of 200 deaths. Those who weren't killed were raped or crippled. "They told us if we wanted to go home we had to sleep with the men", says one woman, "the soldiers watched and laughed". Next month, the Kimberley process, the international body charged with stopping trade in conflict diamonds, will decide whether Zimbabwe should be suspended. Yet with many Western governments involved in Zimbabwe's diamond trade, a former delegate of the Kimberley process believes this deadly business may yet be protected. One of the world’s leading diamond mining companies with operations in Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and Canada chose RADWIN’s wireless broadband systems to enhance operational safety and perimeter security in its Namibian mine site. RADWIN’s partner, IMPLEO Communication Technologies, was responsible for project design and installation. IMPLEO outfitted mobile trailers with high-definition video cameras (CCTV) and RADWIN’s JET Point-to-Multipoint, PtP as well as RADWIN 5000 PtMP nomadic solutions. CCTV trailers move on a weekly basis to different mining sites and live video is transmitted from the sites to the diamond corporation’s control room via RADWIN’s wireless broadband equipment. The real-time video transmission allows security staff to monitor and respond to security breaches and potential violations on the spot, thus enhancing employee safety and securing mine perimeters. Fracking is a highly controversial practise. Although it is an effective method of extracting natural gas, it is also a destructive and disruptive process. Fracking's detrimental effects have already been noticed in areas of long term operation and unfortunately for South Africa, these dangerous practises will soon be coming our way when fracking begins the Karoo. However South Africa is not the only country in Southern African to take this leap into hydraulic fracturing. Botswana has made provisions for shale gas extraction throughout the Kalahari landscape, even in some of the countries beautiful nature reserves. Contamination of ground water is one of the greatest concerns around fracking. Ground water not only an important resource for local communities but for the environment and its wildlife as well. We follow Jeff Barbee, a flimmaker and journalist, as he reveals both the effects of fracking and his findings in southern Africa.

ANGOLA, AFRICA — The largest diamond discovered in Angola, Africa was announced Monday, Feb. 15. The 404.2 carat gem was mined by Lulo Diamond Project, a partnership between Australia's Lucapa Diamond Company Limited; Endiama E.P., Angola's national diamond company; and private investor Rosas & Pétalas. According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the diamond, found in Angola, could be worth more than $20 million in Australian currency, or $14.3 million USD. And according to the announcement by Lucapa, New York-based diamond retailer Yehuda tested the new diamond's color and clarity and categorized it as a Type IIa stone, meaning it's virtually flawless. It is the largest found at the Lulo mine in Angola, where the project commenced in August 2015. The Lulo Diamond Project explores a 1,148 square-mile plot of land in central Angola and the area has so far produced more than 60 "large special diamonds," the company said. It is the 27th largest recorded diamond in the world, the first being a 3,106 carat gem, called the "Cullinan." It weighed in at 1.3 pounds and was discovered in South Africa in 1905. That stone was cut to adorn the royal scepter, one of Britain's crown jewels, and is on display at the Tower of London. The second largest weighed 1,111 carats and was found in November 2014 in Botswana. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. During a recent visit to Botswana, the Australian High Commissioner to Botswana, HE Ann Harrap, had the opportunity to meet 10 Batswana alumni from AusAID programs. Since 2008, 69 Batswana have studied in Australia under the Australia Awards scholarships program. Each year, one thousand Africans are awarded Australian scholarships through this program. In addition, seven Batswana have participated in mining governance study tours through the AAPF. All of the Batswana alumni the High Commissioner met had very positive experiences in Australia. Many said they particularly enjoyed living in Australia because Australians were so friendly and welcoming. Indeed, some of them even described Australia as "a home away from home". The Largest Diamond Manufacturers and Traders in the World Dominion Diamond Corporation this corporation Based in Toronto, Canada and reported $700 million in revenue in 2012. They were originally known as the Harry Winston Diamond Corporation. nowadays, they operate mines in Canada, the most well-known is the Diavik diamond mine located in Lac de Gras. The Rio Tinto Group helps to operate that mine with Dominion Diamonds, although Dominion still owns the rights and property of the entire mine. The company was specifically founded to mine the Diavik mine, and was established in 1994 when the mine was discovered to produce diamonds. Debswana Diamond Company, Ltd. this company is located in Botswana and operates four mines in the country. These mines are the Orapa, Letlhakane, Jwaneng and Damtshaa mines. Unlike other mining companies, which usually are targets of calls from human rights activists worried about 'blood diamonds,' this company has actually proven to be a powerhouse in the growth of the Botswanian economy. Bitswana was once one of the poorest nations in the world, nowadays while it is far from the richest it has one of the world's fastest-growing economies and Debswana is a major part of that growth. Rio-Tinto Diamonds Rio-Tinto is unlike many other diamond companies With over $4 billion in revenues, it is a mine-to-market company, meaning that a diamond can go from sitting in the ground to sitting in a jewelers' display case, all under the supervision of a single company. They operate on five of the seven continents. They own three mines, including one in Australia that is known as the world's major producer of pink diamonds. ALROSA ALROSA is De Beers Russian counterpart. They reported $4.4 billion in revenues in 2012, and most of their success in becoming the world's largest diamond company comes from the discovery of one single mine in Russia, to which ALROSA claim full ownership. That mine alone is thought to contain almost $4 billion in diamonds, and ALROSA has the exclusive right to mine it. All of their mines are in Russia, and most of their mining operations take place in the frozen steppes of Siberia. De Beers Reporting $6.1 billion in revenues in 2012, De Beers has been around in this industry for a years. many assumed that the company was originally founded with the intentions to control the world diamond supply, so that the company is the owner of the diamonds, rather than market forces. Eventually, the company decided the prices of the diamonds themselves. They were thus called a 'diamond cartel,' and those accusations have followed it down to the present day. However, in recent years it has come to light that De Beers does not have the control over the world’s resources as they were thought to have. In the four-part BBC2 series Tropic of Capricorn, broadcast in 2008, Simon followed the southern border of the tropics region around the world. While filming Tropic of Capricorn, Simon travelled through Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Mozambique, Madagascar, Western Australia, the Northern Territory, Queensland, Chile, Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil. The journey took him to stunning areas of the world, but it was also a chance for spontaneous discoveries about the changing global environment, poverty, globalisation, AIDS, the rise of the Chinese economy and the suffering of Africa. tube: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-37222683 When Botswana won independence 50 years ago, one journalist described the country as "an impoverished, arid and hungry land without hope of achieving economic stability". Half a century on and Botswana has turned into one of Africa's fastest growing economies. Its capital, Gaborone, is a thriving city of just under a quarter of a million people with skyscrapers sprouting up in every corner. Part of its sparkle comes from Botswana's diamond mines, which account for a third of its GDP. Another part is visible in the distance from those tall buildings - the vast desert landscape, home to one of Africa's best preserved wildlife habitats that attracts a growing number of tourists. But there are other issues too that are not far beneath the surface. An Aids epidemic still claims thousands of lives, unemployment is on the rise and there are tensions over aspects of life that have come with modernisation. Diamonds are not forever Poppie Moriana is a quality controller at the world's largest rough diamond sorting and valuing operation. It is a pressurised role but Ms Moriana is proud of having worked in the industry for 24 years. "It fills me with great pleasure knowing that we are handling Botswana's economy," she says. It has also helped her provide for her family - she has three ambitious young children who dream of being neurosurgeons and lawyers - and help out other family members.

A rare blue diamond, weighing in at just under 30 carats was found recently in the Cullinan mine in South Africa, that is owned by Petra Diamonds. According to professional analyst Cailey Barker, the diamond could be worth between 15 to 20 million dollars at auction. A 25 point 5 carat blue diamond from the same mine sold for just under 17 million dollars last year. Chief executive of Petra Diamonds, Johan Dippenaar is quoted as saying: "By some margin ... this is probably the most significant stone we've ever, in terms of blue stones, recovered. The stones in the last year or so are selling well above $2 million per carat." The blue diamond is reportedly about the size of an acorn. The mine where the blue diamond was found is also the site where the largest rough gem ever found, known as the Cullinan Diamond, was recovered in 1905. That stone originally weighed just over 31 hundred carats, but was cut into two pieces called the First and Second Star of Africa that are now part of the British Crown Jewels collection.

CAR's poverty exists despite rich reserves of two of the world's most sought after commodities - uranium and diamonds. However, little, if any, of the proceeds filter down to workers, who have to get by on a few dollars a day. Al Jazeera's Andrew Simmons reports from Boda. Over the past 20 years, Franco Loja and Arjan Roskam, known as the "Kings of Cannabis," have made millions of dollars scouring the world for unique strains of weed to breed and then sell. Now, they've turned their sights on Equatorial Africa, specifically the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as their next gold mine — and a way to revolutionize the cannabis industry. "Equatorial Africa is one the best preserved because of the wars, the lack of infrastructure, political unrest. All these situations created isolation there," Loja explained. "So that's where we're going." Loja and Roskam built their global powerhouse on inbred strains of cannabis called "landraces" that they've collected from all over the world — Argentina, Australia, and Brazil, just to name a few spots. Without these strains, the duo's various breeding enterprises, Amsterdam coffeeshops, and even distribution centers wouldn't exist. VICE News met up with the “Kings of Cannabis” for a trip to the Democratic Republic of the Congo to hunt for one of the rarest species of Cannabis yet, the original Congolese landrace. There has been a sigh of relief for Capetonians after the Deputy Mayor, Ian Neilson, announced plans to relax the current water restrictions in the Western Cape. Dam levels have reportedly improved significantly due in part to good rainfall as well as adherence to stringent water consumption restrictions. According to the deputy mayor, the city will lower restrictions from Level 6B to Level 5. Cape Town was particularly hard hit by one of the most dangerous droughts in recorded history. Minimal rainfall over 2017 and 2018 left the systematic dams feeding the Cape's water supply at a critically low level. The city only recently pushed back its estimate for Day Zero--when taps in the city run dry and people start queuing for water Subscribe to us on YouTube: http://ow.ly/Zvqj30aIsgY Follow us on: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/cgtnafrica/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/cgtnafrica
