Ghost Towns in Ontario, Canada - Abandoned Village, Town or City | Part 2

Some writers discount settlements that were abandoned as a result of a natural or human-made disaster, using the term only to describe settlements which were deserted because they were no longer economically viable; T. Lindsey Baker, author of Ghost Towns of Texas, defines a ghost town as "a town for which the reason for being no longer exists".[1] Some believe that any settlement with visible tangible remains should not be called a ghost town;[2] others say, conversely, that a ghost town should contain the tangible remains of buildings.[3] Whether or not the settlement must be completely deserted, or may contain a small population, is also a matter for debate.[2] Generally, though, the term is used in a looser sense, encompassing any and all of these definitions. The American author Lambert Florin's preferred definition of a ghost town was simply "a shadowy semblance of a former self". Factors leading to abandonment of towns include depleted natural resources, economic activity shifting elsewhere, railroads and roads bypassing or no longer accessing the town, human intervention, disasters, massacres, wars, and the shifting of politics or fall of empires.[5] A town can also be abandoned when it is part of an exclusion zone due to natural or man-made causes. Ghost towns may result when the single activity or resource that created a boomtown (e.g., nearby mine, mill or resort) is depleted or the resource economy undergoes a "bust" (e.g., catastrophic resource price collapse). Boomtowns can often decrease in size as fast as they initially grew. Sometimes, all or nearly the entire population can desert the town, resulting in a ghost town. The dismantling of a boomtown can often occur on a planned basis. Mining companies nowadays will create a temporary community to service a mine site, building all the accommodation shops and services, and then remove it as the resource is worked out. A gold rush would often bring intensive but short-lived economic activity to a remote village, only to leave a ghost town once the resource was depleted. In some cases, multiple factors may remove the economic basis for a community; some former mining towns on U.S. Route 66 suffered both mine closures when the resources were depleted and loss of highway traffic as US 66 was diverted away from places like Oatman, Arizona onto a more direct path. The Middle East has many ghost towns that were created when the shifting of politics or the fall of empires caused capital cities to be socially or economically non-viable, such as Ctesiphon. Calico Ghost Town, CA

04:35
While driving from Yosemite National Park to Zion National Park, we took a few days to stop in the middle to visit Calico Ghost Town! Back in 1881, for 15 years, this was a bustling Silver Mine with millions of dollars of silver ore mined in over 30 miles of tunnels throughout the surrounding hills. A few of the original town buildings have survived, surrounded by others to make the town a very nice tourist attraction. They have many nice shops, a Rail Road ride, and an old silver mine tunnel that you can walk thru. I ventured thru this mine with surprisingly little trouble despite my slight case of claustrophobia! As luck would have it, the weekend we were there was the Blue Grass Festival! As many of you know, this is one of my favorite weekends back at Strawberry Park in CT. It was great spending the day wandering around this old town listening to all the live bands! We would greatly appreciate your support by using the link below for all your future Amazon.com purchases. Elkhorn – A Montana Ghost Town HD – near Boulder, Montana MT

09:22
Elkhorn, a Montana ghost town in HD, is near Boulder, Montana. Join me as I explore Elkhorn ghost town in the southwestern part of our state of Montana. Silver was initially discovered in the Elkhorn Mountains and over $14 million in silver was carried from the mines in the area. In 1890, the Sherman Silver Purchase Act passed, creating a high demand for Elkhorn's silver. During this peak period, Elkhorn boasted 2,500 inhabitants, a school, hotel, church, stores, saloons, and brothels. Unlike most mining towns, Elkhorn was populated mostly by married European immigrants. In 1893 the Fraternity Hall was constructed for social gatherings, and still remains as one of the most well-preserved buildings in Elkhorn. In the years following, the silver boom and Elkhorn's prosperity began to lessen as the desire for silver decreased. A diphtheria epidemic also struck Elkhorn, resulting in many deaths, particularly of children. Soon after, railroad service to Elkhorn was halted and only a fraction of the original inhabitants remained. This was my second journey to Elkhorn ghost town. The first expedition was in 2001. I took a few pictures and made a slideshow https://youtu.be/f8fP7Yglon8 Thinking back, I believe the town had only a couple of hardy souls living there. Boy was I surprised when I arrived in town. Not only did I have a flat tire, but many cabins have been renovated and the year-round population is now up to ten! Most residents are descendants of early miners and shopkeepers. Everyone I met was extremely friendly and related stories of relatives who worked, built cabins or were buried in the cemetery. Elkhorn John was the first resident I met. He lives across the street west from the Elkhorn State Park, the smallest state park in Montana. The park consists of two buildings, the Gillian Hall and the Fraternity Hall. Elkhorn John lives in a cabin built by his grandfather in 1892! He, along with his two friendly dogs, opened up the fire hall and aired up my flat tire. This did not fix the problem but it did tell us where the rock hole was! Replacing the flat with my spare was my next project. I also met Tom and a friend of his. Tom lives across the street north of the state park. He assisted me in replacing my flat tire with my spare tire. His friend actually went looking for a spare when we were having difficulties removing my spare from under the truck. Tom filled the spare with his portable compressor since it was also low on air (a new tire but had not been checked for air since it was new, six years ago!) Tom related a few stories about Elkhorn. As a teenager, he assisted in the Elkhorn Mine delivering dynamite to the blasters (at 500 to 1800 feet underground!) His grandfather built a cabin on the land where he now lives. Tom recommended I visit the cemetery and also the old railroad water tower built in 1889 by the Northern Pacific Railroad. The water tower and short-line railroad from Boulder were active until rail service was discontinued in 1914. The 48,000 gallon water tower is the last-known example of a first-generation Northern Pacific wooden water tank which, because of its 6,000-ft. altitude, included a wooden skirt around the tank supporting structure. Another person I met was just leaving the cemetery when I arrived. She is from Helena and her great grandfather was buried here. He died during the Diphtheria epidemic that hit the town especially hard from 1884-1889. Now, THAT’S a lot of history in my short four hour stay in Elkhorn ghost town! I just wish I had budgeted more time. The next sojourn will be sooner than 15 years from now, for sure! This sequence was captured with a DJI camera on a Phantom 3 Advanced quad copter (aka drone or UAV) and a Canon Vixia HFS-100 camera. Post production utilized Adobe Premier Pro 6. Zoning board approves Mine 37 cleanup project

01:41
Original Air Date: 2/26/14 By: Jackalyn Kovac RICHLAND TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- An old Cambria County mine is on its way to becoming less of an eyesore for people living around it.A cleanup project for Mine 37 received approval from the Richland Township zoning board Tuesday night. Neighbors living near the mine say they've had some concerns, but the proposals have made the situation a win-win for everyone. They had shown different pictures of land they had already done work to, and it was impressive, said Ron Kermine. I think it would be a win-win situation for the area down here.As it sits now, Mine 37 is an abandoned mine in Richland Township. Neighbors see it as an eyesore, however, an Ebensburg company hopes to change the view for the number of people living around it.If you really want to look at it the way it is now, it is an eyesore. But new shrubbery would probably help the wildlife down there, so I think it would be a great thing myself, said Kermine. In addition to the new shrubbery, pools for water will be dug for water runoff, in hopes of removing the contamination from the Paint Creek nearby.According to Township Zoning Officer David Mills, the plan is for Ebensburg Power Company to haul out the remaining coal out of the mine, burn it down to ash then take the ash back to the mine, all without disturbing the local community. The trucks will travel from the mine onto Mine 37 Road to Eisenhower Boulevard then travel onto state Route 219 to Ebensburg and back. All those roads are covered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, those are all state roads, so that will limit the amount of traffic that will go past the residents, says Mills. Right now, the project is just waiting to get several permits from the state. The first step in the process will be creating a road for trucks to reach the mine.

Abandoned Mountain Town, Elkmont, TN - Ghost Town Day Hike

Elkmont was once a thriving vacation destination for affluent folks from the cities of Tennessee. Some time ago, the land was bought up as a result of the Smoky Mountain National Park being formed. In short, due to various red tape, the buildings have not yet been torn down as was the plan by the park service, leaving a ghost town of sorts for folks to enjoy. In this video our group hiked around the area for a bit to explore some of what's left of this pseudo ghost town. Big Muskie - The Largest Walking Dragline Ever Built

04:55
Standing 22 stories tall and weighing 13,500 metric tons, Big Muskie was the world's largest dragline and the biggest machine that has ever walked on the face of the earth. With the boom down, it was almost 500 ft in length. Big Muskie was a coal mining Bucyrus-Erie dragline owned by the Central Ohio Coal Company. It removed more than twice the amount of earth moved during the construction of the Panama Canal. Its bucket could hold two Greyhound buses side by side. I was talking to a guy in a bar in Fort Stockton,Texas in 2001. When I told him I was from Ohio he said he just came back from Ohio. He was on a crew that was cutting up "Big Muskie". He said he was there a year outside of Zanesville. He was surprised that I never heard of Big Muskie. I was surprised when he said it took a year to cut up. Here's why.....

But before it was a hotel, it was an infirmary run by nuns. Lizz Parish was staying at the hotel one night and came face to face with one of these nuns. She also had an experience with the disembodied voices of children inside the Bonanza. Is the hotel a resting place for those who've passed on? And are the nuns still residing over their rooms tending to the sick? Produced and Directed by Christopher Bagnall.

Thorium.

06:27:00
http://ThoriumRemix.com/ Thorium is an abundant material which can be transformed into massive quantities of energy. To do so efficiently requires a very different nuclear reactor than the kind we use today- Not one that uses solid fuel rods, but a reactor in which the fuel is kept in a liquid state. Not one that uses pressurized water as a coolant, but a reactor that uses chemically stable molten salts. Such a reactor is called a "Molten Salt Reactor". Many different configurations are possible. Some of these configurations can harness Thorium very efficiently. This video explores the attributes of Molten Salt Reactors. Why are they compelling? And why do many people (including myself) see them as the only economical way of fully harnessing ALL our nuclear fuels... including Thorium. This video has been under development since 2012. I hope it conveys to you why I personally find Molten Salt Reactors so compelling, as do the many volunteers and supporters who helped create it. Much of the footage was shot by volunteers.
