Why Drake uses a Jamaican accent

02:39
Drake employs a Jamaican accent when it's convenient for him. So we investigated the origin of his patois. Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO Note: An earlier version of this video incorrectly stated that Boi-1da produced One Dance. It also incorrectly set the dates on Views and If You're Reading This It's Too Late. --------------- The cultural history we’re discussing in this video extends beyond Drake in so many ways that couldn’t fit into this video. So here are some links to further watching / reading to get a better picture of the Caribbean-Canadian connection. The first is this video by TheNerdwriter1. It focuses on the difference between tropical house and dancehall, with a nice little explainer on the history behind dancehall’s significance in Jamaican culture. https://youtu.be/ljbohB2_WnU The second resource is in the Statistics Canada website. It’s where I got the map you saw in the video. And it can give you a closer look at the figures I talk about in the video. www.statcan.gc.ca/pub/89-621-x/89-621-x2007012-eng.htm Finally, I recommend the culture writing in the FADER, particularly when it focuses on greater Toronto. Here are some of my favorite pieces: On calling Drake’s music dancehall http://www.thefader.com/2017/03/21/drake-more-life-dancehall-jamaica-views On the delicate balance between appropriation and appreciation in Greater Toronto www.thefader.com/2017/03/15/south-asian-artists-rapper-nav Vox.com is a news website that helps you cut through the noise and understand what's really driving the events in the headlines. Metal Detector Treasure Found in Scotland 13th Century Crusades Sword Pommel

02:48
http://www.treasurebone.blogspot.com George Burns of Ashkirk found the pommel of a sword that dates back to the late 13th century on farmland in Selirkshire. Burns' find has been labeled as one of the significant relic find of the Middle Ages ever found in Scotland. At first Burns thought he found a muddy brass door knob. Burns said "I have learned to never throw anything away, so I took it home and washed it..." As he cleaned the mud and dirt off Burns realized the "door knob" was actually the pommel of a sword. Burns saw the word "SCION" and assumed it to mean Jerusalem. The pommel was taken to the National Museums of Scotland in Edinburgh. There, experts have confirmed the pommel is from the late 13th century and have acknowledged the pommel as "A particularly interesting find" Walter Elliot an author and historian says "When I heard about the SION inscription I immediately thought of the Crusades, but was only too aware there had never been any relics relating to these military campaigns discovered in the Borders," Said Mr. Elliot "The etched designs are quite crude and difficult to explain but, apart from SION, clearly visible are the letters US REX JUDE which is a fragment of IEUS NAZARENUS REX IUDEREM or Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews. The pommels of Crusader's swords were customized and this inscription was quite common in the 13th century because it was believed to give the user of the sword protection against violent death in battle." Based on the rarity of the pommel it is estimated it could be worth approximately 2000 pounds. Burns said "Apart from one occasion when I needed to repair my metal detector, every penny I have had in treasure trove has gone anonymously to Save the Children. I get my real satisfaction from adding to the knowledge of, and interest in, the history of the Borders." I found the information for this video at Silkirk Weekend Advertiser and you can find a link to the original article on my blog at http://www.treasurebone.blogspot.com Well, that's all I have for now. As always, take care and happy hunting. Bye.

I know, the video is a bit late but better later than never :) Jarek and I went to see all the beautiful gems and beads, hoping to find new suppliers and stones for my work. I haven't bought too much though, being quite surprised by prices. Buying mostly online I forgot that prices at gem shows are higher, at least there. I managed to spot some lovely cabochons though and will be creating some nice jewelry with them soon! Hope you've enjoyed watching and see you in the next video. Bengal cats are a breed that was developed by breeding domestic cats with asian leopard cats. The first American bengal breeder is a woman named Jean Mill, but her work has continued through other breeders. We met one of those breeders, Anthony Hutcherson, when we went to film the cats at the Westminster Dog Show. Besides bengals, we also saw another hybrid breed: savannahs. Instead of asian leopard cats, savannahs were developed by breeding house cats with servals. Unlike the other two breeds, the last breed we met, toygers, are not hybrid cats. Breeder Judy Sugden created the breed by carefully breeding domestic cats with qualities that resemble wild tigers. To learn more about the cats and the breeders that made possible, watch the video above. BREAKING - Germany mocked for CRINGEWORTHY video to lure British bankers after Brexit 'it's awful!'

04:43
Germany mocked for CRINGEWORTHY video to lure British bankers after Brexit 'it's awful!' The short English-language film, entitled ‘Fall In Love With Frankfurt’ and produced by Frankfurt Main Finance, is apparently an attempt to defuse “prejudices, myths and cliches” about Frankfurt as the financial centre eyes life after the UK quits the EU – and the possibility benefits to the city it calls an “underestimated metropolis of Frankfurt”.It depicts an encounter in a bar between “Natalie” and a man who introduces himself as “Furt…Frank Furt”.Initially unimpressed, Natalie is works to win her round, describing the city’s “modern architecture, high-end shopping streets, bustling farmer’s markets, beautiful landscapes (“perfect for weekend trips”), museums and nightlife. Furthermore Frank counters her criticisms about the city’s cuisine (“I don’t think I could live on just sausage a... Jeremy Deller - Surviving Financially as an Artist and The Artist's Resale Right

04:30
Jeremy Deller, former Turner Prize winner, talks to DACS about his favourite projects, surviving financially as an artist and the importance of the Artist's Resale Right. Jeremy Deller (born 1966) is an English conceptual, video and installation artist. Much of Deller's work is collaborative; it has a strong political aspect, in the subjects dealt with and also the devaluation of artistic ego through the involvement of other people in the creative process. He won the Turner Prize in 2004, and in 2010 was awarded the Albert Medal of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures & Commerce (RSA). Deller is known for his Battle of Orgreave (2001),[1] a reenactment of the actual Battle of Orgreave which occurred during the UK miners' strike in 1984, and for 2016's We’re Here Because We’re Here. ------------------------------------------------------------------- ABOUT The Artist's Resale Right The Artist's Resale Right means that you could be entitled to a royalty when your work is resold for €1,000 or more, with the involvement of an auction house, gallery or dealer. As of 1 January 2012, the Right was extended in the UK to cover sales of work by deceased artists still in copyright, which means that your heirs will also be eligible for royalties. In the UK, copyright lasts for the lifetime of the artist plus 70 years after their death, to the end of that calendar year. This is the most significant new right for visual artists in recent times, giving you an ongoing stake in the value of your work. ------------------------------------------------------------------- ABOUT DACS: Established by artists for artists, DACS is a not-for-profit visual artists’ rights management organisation. Passionate about transforming the financial landscape for visual artists through innovative new products and services, we act as a trusted broker for 100,000 artists worldwide. Founded over 30 years ago, DACS is a flagship organisation that campaigns for artists’ rights, championing their sustained and vital contribution to the creative economy. We collect and distribute royalties to visual artists and their estates through Payback, Artist's Resale Right, Copyright Licensing and Artimage. Since we were founded in 1984, we have paid over £100 million in royalties to artists and their estates – a significant source of income supporting artists’ livelihoods, their practice and legacy. Antiquarians in the 21st Century: Opening up our data

13:57
The Society of Antiquaries of Scotland has been an active publisher of Scotland’s history and archaeology since 1792; the Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland (PSAS), has been the primary journal dealing with Scotland’s past in its British and European context since 1851. Publication in PSAS has often been seen by many archaeologists as the ‘end’ of the research cycle: excavation is followed by publication, and the process is complete. However, there is increasing awareness that the final report alone does not tell the whole story, and many readers would also like to examine raw data. In 2001, the Society created a new, fully peer reviewed, freely available online journal, Scottish Archaeological Internet Reports (SAIR), so was an early adopter of Open Access in an archaeological context. SAIR was intended to provide a new, lower- cost publication outlet for detailed archaeological reports; over the last fifteen years it has evolved to include the publication of many different types of projects – including large-scale surveys, gazetteers and conference proceedings – which would not be possible or desirable to publish in print for various reasons. The Society also runs the Scottish Archaeological Research Framework (ScARF). Launched in 2012, this collaborative project brought together experts from a range of disciplines to compile a peer-reviewed summary of our archaeological knowledge up to that point and agree where future research should be directed. The entirety of Scottish archaeology was split into nine panel reports, all of which are available for free download from the project website or can be viewed on the wiki- style website itself. As such, it is it the first framework of its kind in archaeology. The Society is contemplating how best to take PSAS, SAIR and ScARF forward in an Open Access world. Our audiences are increasing, both in number and in variety. There have been over 400,000 downloads from Society’s publication archives held by the Archaeology Data Service (ADS) since 2011, and over the past three years ScARF has seen over 262,000 page views. And yet these final reports are only the tip of the archaeological data mountain. As an archaeological publisher, if we aspire to the true aims of Open Access, we should be making the original data available for re- use, data mining and new interpretations. But how can these aspirations be carried out in practice when the data is so vast and varied? As a small independent organisation, we must look to collaboration. How best to do this? One possibility is drawing from the models created by computer scientists and scientific publishers more used to dealing with raw data rather than ‘coffeetable books’. However, making the data available is not only a technological issue – there are already data downloads available in parts of ScARF and SAIR, for example – but a cultural one. Many archaeologists are cautious about openly sharing raw data and we must consider how best to reconcile the needs of authors and remaining true to our own aims of truly open knowledge. from Wikipedia: The National Archives (TNA) is an executive agency of the Ministry of Justice of the United Kingdom.[2] It is "the UK government's official archive, containing 1,000 years of history".[3] There are separate national archives in some of the devolved parts of the United Kingdom: the National Archives of Scotland holds government and private documents relating to Scotland and the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland holds records for Northern Ireland. TNA was formerly four separate organisations: the Public Record Office, the Historical Manuscripts Commission, the Office of Public Sector Information (OPSI) and Her Majesty's Stationery Office (HMSO). It is institutional policy to include the definite article, with an initial capital letter, in its name (hence "The National Archives", abbreviated as TNA) but this practice is rarely followed in the non-specialist media. The National Archives is based in Kew in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames in south-west London. The building was opened in 1977 as an additional home for the public records, which were held in a building on Chancery Lane. The site was originally a World War I hospital, which was later used by several government departments.[4] It is near to Kew Gardens Underground station. Until its closure in March 2008, the Family Records Centre in Islington was run jointly by The National Archives and the General Register Office. The National Archives has an additional office in Norwich, which is primarily for former OPSI staff. There is also an additional record storage facility (DeepStore[5]) in the worked-out parts of Winsford Rock Salt Mine, Winsford, Cheshire.
