Increased domestic U.S. oil and gas production, thanks to advances known as “fracking,” has created a boom for other industries supporting that extraction. Demand for silica sand, used in fracking, could triple over the next five years. In the Midwest state of Illinois, people living near the mines are worried about how increased silica sand mining will affect their businesses and their health. VOA’s Kane Farabaugh has more in this first of a series of reports. Greed is a powerful poison, and I suspect that over the next 30 years, if Waker and his "industrial backers' write the laws and steal your natural wealth, that you will have nothing but an industrailized wasteland in much of the State. For information on these and other Outotec sand plant project references, contact us at [email protected] More than just how to process, we know market requirements. These market requirements are key for determining if a silica sand deposit can produce products for the fracturing sand market, the glass sand market, or both. The frac sand industry has more stringent size distribution specifications than glass sands. This can result in more "waste" product than in a glass sand process depending on daily market demands for certain sizes. Additionally, some deposits with more aluminium or iron may not meet glass sand specifications, but are still suitable for frac sands. Testing and ore body characterization are the easiest means for determining the most profitable end product, and simultaneously provide direction for the best processing methods. Outotec provides successful operations by ensuring products are to specification. If you had five mines in a littlemunity, maybe that's a concentration that had to be looked at cumulatively." Witt's mother and brother ended up selling their properties to Unimin, prompting some residents to question whether Witt had a conflict of interest as town board chairman. Witt acknowledges that he is the administrator of his mother's estate but says he's never looked at the will to see whether he would benefit. He also says town attorney Rick Radcliffe has advised him there is no conflict of interest. As far as Witt's concerned, he's representing the Greenfield voters as best he can. While Unimin's plans still draw heated words from somemunity members, Webster, for one, is confident Unimin will do right by her — and Tunnel City. This western Wisconsinmunity is in the midst of a land rush — call it a sand rush — fueled by exploding nationwide demand for fine silica sand used in hydraulic fracturing. In this process, nicknamed "fracking," sand, water and chemicals are blasted into wells, creating fissures in the rock and freeing hard-to-reach pockets of oil and natural gas. Even then, the monitors do not detect the size of particles of most concern to people like Pierce. The DNR requires monitoring for large particles but says it lacks the expertise and resources to monitor for smaller particlesmonly produced by frac-sand mining and processing. Pierce believes the DNR should develop a standard for safe exposure to silica that it can monitor. Minin

Texas-based Black Mountain Sand delivers superior in-basin frac sand solutions to companies in the Exploration & Production (E&P) industry. With domestic energy production surging, frac sand demand is expected to climb accordingly, increasing to 115 tons in 2019, up from 82 million tons in 2017. Black Mountain Sand is poised to contribute to this need––now and well into the future––with 36+ years of Permian Basin frac sand reserves. Our two flagship Permian facilities, Vest and El Dorado, boast a combined 12 million annual tons of nameplate capacity, the largest in the basin by a significant margin. Black Mountain is now expanding in the Permian Basin, Eagle Ford Shale, and Oklahoma’s Mid-Continent region with an additional four in-basin mines under construction. All told, Black Mountain Sand’s annual production capacity is anticipated to top 19 million tons by the end of 2018, equaling roughly 17 percent of total estimated frac sand demand in 2019.

Sand miner U.S. Silica Holdings said demand could triple over the next five years as energy companies use increasing amounts of sand in hydraulic fracturing to extract more oil and gas from shale fields. Sand along with water and chemicals is blasted into wells to crack rock and release crude oil and natural gas in hydraulic fracturing, a drilling method that has unleashed a production surge in North America. U.S. Silica sold about 8.2 million tons of sand in 2013. Half of this went to energy companies. The company, whose revenue has doubled over the last four years, expects its sand volumes to grow 30 to 35 percent this year. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/reuters/businessNews/~3/4O9FjCzALr8/story01.htm http://www.wochit.com

The frac sand mining debate has, so far, focused on issues concerning costs, health and environmental degradation. But an often overlooked but critically important aspect of this divisive issue is simply: Is it the right thing to do? At 7:00 pm on Tuesday, October 22, Dr. Donovan Hommen, ordained pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and retired clinical psychologist, discussed the topic: "Our Moralities and Frac Sand Mining." Dr. Hommen carefully sifted through and helped clarify the moral issues posed by large-scale frac sand mining that every citizen should be concerned about. The issue and reality of frac sand mining has divided communities wherever silica sand can be mined. Some of these communities have become places where clear differences triggered by individual interests or deeply held convictions have caused conflict and strained relationships. The debate has raged over economic impacts, health concerns and environmental degradation. But what's been missing from this debate is the chance for our citizens to come together and think carefully about the moral issues of this debate. What is the right thing to do? Whatever our points of view, surely this question deserves our serious attention. This event was hosted by the Houston County Protectors. Introduction: Michael Fields

SAVE OUR PLANET... Liberia's Atlantic coast is eroding quickly. Houses on the shores of Liberia are collapsing at the edge of the sea due to coastal erosion arising from climate-related sea level rise and other factors. Government records show that in the area of Buchanan, for example, about 250 people lost their homes in recent years, with the last several years seeing a loss of a full 10 meters from the area's coastal beaches. In other populated coastal areas, the Liberian Environment Agency measured at least three meters of land being lost annually, with 50 meters of shore having disappeared since 2005 from one town alone. Some families, unable to afford new dwellings, are still living in the portion of their home that has not been taken over by the rising tide waters. Josep Gari, regional environmental team leader for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), said that the global warming effects have been aggravated by unregulated sand mining and unsustainable harvesting of mangroves, which act as natural barriers from storm surges. The Liberian government has announced a short-term plan to protect infrastructure but lacks resources for significant projects. Meanwhile, experts express concern that densely populated communities throughout the shores of West Africa will soon be showing the similar effects of coastal erosion. Our appreciation, Mr. Gari, United Nations Development Program and Liberia for your voiced concern over these distressing observations. May we all move quickly toward lifestyles in harmony with nature to cool the planet and halt its demise. During an interview for the September 2009 edition of The House Magazine, Supreme Master Ching Hai addressed global warming effects including coastal erosion, as well as the moral actions needed in response. Interview with Supreme Master Ching Hai Published in The House Magazine September 2009 edition Supreme Master Ching Hai: It's too serious. Too serious. Sea level rise, for example, threatens half of the world's population living within 200 kilometers of a coastline. Seventeen million in Bangladesh have fled their homes already, mainly because of coastal erosion. In the United Kingdom as well, several coastal flooding disasters have already occurred with more forecast by the nation's Department of Environment. This is due in part to the fact that over 26 million residents in the UK live in coastal zones, with 40% of Britain's manufacturing industry also located on or near the coast. Supreme Master Ching Hai: These situations will only worsen, not improve, until we stop the cause. This means to halt the livestock production and meat consumption. If humans switch to the vegan diet, the Earth will begin cooling immediately and many of these dilemmas can even be reversed. So please, be veg and do good, to save the planet and all the beings on it, including you and me.
