Rio Tinto: Spain

03:29
The Río Tinto is a river in southwestern Spain that rises in the Sierra Morena mountains of Andalusia. It flows generally south-southwest, reaching the Gulf of Cádiz at Huelva. The Rio Tinto River has a unique red and orange colour. The colour is derived from the chemical makeup of the river. The river is extremely acidic and contains very high levels of iron. The combination of the acid water, heavy metals and high levels of iron give the river its unique color. The River maintains its color for an approximate length of 50 kilometers. After the 50 kilometer mark, the chemistry that makes the Rio Tinto river so unique appears to slowly decline, as with the odd coloring. The location where the chemistry of the river is altered is near a town called Niebla. The river's chemistry begins to significantly change following the town of Niebla owing to the fact that the Rio Tinto blends itself with other streams that are connected to the Atlantic Ocean. The length of the river is around 100 kilometers long and is located within the Iberian Pyrite Belt. This area has large amounts of ore and sulfide deposits. This specific region in Spain has seen many years of mining. The mining projects focus primarily on the river but ore deposits have also been found 20 kilometres from the shoreline. Rio Tinto has been the root of approximately 5000 years of ore extraction. Due to all of the mining activity in the area, the topography has been vastly modified. Source: Wikipedia

Driving Downtown - Denver Colorado USA - Episode 53. Starting Point: Colfax Avenue https://goo.gl/maps/oDaTW3Z8hiv . Denver is one of the fastest-growing major cities in the United States and is the capital and most populous municipality of the U.S. state of Colorado. Denver is just east of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. Denver is nicknamed the Mile High City because its official elevation is exactly one mile (5280 feet or 1609.3 meters) above sea level, making it the highest major city in the United States.  With an estimated population of 693,060 in 2016, Denver is the 19th-most populous U.S. city, with a 15.48% increase since the 2010 United States Census.  In 2016, Denver was named the best place to live in the United States by U.S. News & World Report. Economy The Denver MSA has a gross metropolitan product of $157.6 billion in 2010, making it the 18th largest metro economy in the United States. Denver's economy is based partially on its geographic position and its connection to some of the country's major transportation systems. Because Denver is the largest city within 500 miles (800 km), it has become a natural location for storage and distribution of goods and services to the Mountain States, Southwest states, as well as all western states. Another benefit for distribution is that Denver is nearly equidistant from large cities of the Midwest, such as Chicago and St. Louis and some large cities of the West Coast, such as Los Angeles and San Francisco. Denver's position near the mineral-rich Rocky Mountains encouraged mining and energy companies to spring up in the area. In the early days of the city, gold and silver booms and busts played a large role in the city's economic success. In the 1970s and early 1980s, the energy crisis in America and resulting high oil prices created an energy boom in Denver captured in the soap opera Dynasty. Denver was built up considerably during this time with the construction of many new downtown skyscrapers. When the price of oil dropped from $34 a barrel in 1981 to $9 a barrel in 1986, the Denver economy also dropped, leaving almost 15,000 oil industry workers in the area unemployed (including former mayor and current governor John Hickenlooper, a former geologist), and the nation's highest office vacancy rate (30%). The industry has recovered and the region has 700 employed petroleum engineers.[86] Advances in hydraulic fracturing have made the DJ Basin of Colorado into an accessible and lucrative oil play. Energy and mining are still important in Denver's economy today, with companies such as EnCana, Halliburton, Smith International, Rio Tinto Group, Newmont Mining, Noble Energy, and Anadarko headquartered or having significant operations. Sports Denver is home to a variety of sports teams and is one of the U.S. cities with teams from four major sports (the Denver metro area is the smallest metropolitan area to have a team in all four major sports). The Denver Broncos of the National Football League have drawn crowds of over 70,000 since their origins in the early 1960s, and continue to draw fans today to their current home Sports Authority Field at Mile High. The Broncos have sold out every home game (except for strike-replacement games) since 1970. The Broncos have advanced to eight Super Bowls and won back-to-back titles in 1997 and 1998, and won again in 2015. Culture Because of its proximity to the mountains and generally sunny weather, Denver has gained a reputation as being a very active, outdoor-oriented city. Many Denver residents spend the weekends in the mountains; skiing in the winter and hiking, climbing, kayaking, and camping in the summer. Denver and surrounding cities are home to a large number of local and national breweries. Many of the region's restaurants have on-site breweries, and some larger brewers offer tours, including Coors and New Belgium Brewing Company. The city also welcomes visitors from around the world when it hosts the annual Great American Beer Festival each fall. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denver

Introduction to Longwall Mining in Illinois

02:51
In November 2009, Eco-Justice Collaborative (www.ecojusticecollaborative.org) traveled with representatives of Topless America and the Sierra Club to central Illinois to take a first-hand look at longwall mining. This highly-mechanized form of mining includes planned subsidence, causing land to drop from 4 to 6 feet. It is occurring under some of the best farmland in the world, trading prime farmland for cheap coal. As land subsides, foundations crack and septic systems and wells are affected. Residents often leave their homes and farms, depopulating and destroying what used to be cohesive communities, rather than negotiate repairs with mining companies. Longwall mining is Illinois form of mountaintop removal mining. As with mountaintop removal mining, toxic chemicals are used to process coal. Evidence suggests that these chemicals are leaching into ground water and water supplies at selected locations. This video highlights impacts in central Illinois Macoupin County, and takes an initial look at the proposed Deer Run Mine in Montgomery County which, if constructed as planned, will be the largest coal mine in the U.S. To learn more, contact Pam or Lan Richart at [email protected] or Citizens Against Longwall Mining: [email protected]

Riotinto is a large area with open-pit and underground mines. It was established in the 18th century by the English (whose employees brought soccer to Spain) and was in operation until the 1980s. Corta Atalaya is the largest open-pit mine in Europe. Even the Romans operated small mines here. Today all mining operations are stopped but companies are hopeful to reopen in the coming years. Meanwhile it is a National Park with a toursit train ride and a museum. Oh, and in the museum is a train wagon once used by the English queen on her journey to India. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corta_Atalaya and http://www.parquemineroderiotinto.com

Rio Tinto, Spain (Red River)

01:20
The Río Tinto (red river) is a river in southwestern Spain that originates in the Sierra Morena mountains of Andalusia. It flows generally south-southwest, reaching the Gulf of Cádiz at Huelva. This unearthly, reddish river in southwestern Spain is unlike any you've ever seen before. The water gets its coloration from iron dissolved in the water, and is notable for being extremely acidic. This may not sound like a suitable place to find life, but living in the bizarre waters of Rio Tinto are extremophile aerobic microorganisms that feed on the iron and sulphide minerals plentiful in the river. Since ancient times, a site along the river has been mined for copper, silver, gold, and other minerals. In approximately 3,000 BC, Iberians and Tartessians began mining the site, followed by the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Visigoths, and Moors. After a period of abandonment, the mines were rediscovered in 1556 and the Spanish government began operating them once again in 1724. As a possible result of the mining, Río Tinto is notable for being very acidic (pH 2) and its deep reddish hue is due to iron dissolved in the water. Acid mine drainage from the mines leads to severe environmental problems due to the heavy metal concentrations in the river. In 1873, Rio Tinto Company was formed to operate the mines; by the end of the 20th century it had become one of the world's largest multinational mining companies, although it no longer controls the Rio Tinto mines; these are now owned by EMED Mining plc. Scientists now believe that these conditions could be the perfect analogue to what happens when liquid water flows on other planets or moons, such as on Mars or perhaps on Jupiter's moon, Europa. If life can survive under these conditions here on Earth, then it's possible that it also has survived elsewhere, making Rio Tinto an important case study into astrobiology. In fact, data retrieved from NASA's Opportunity rover has shown that similar conditions to those at Rio Tinto have existed on Mars in the past. [Wikipedia] Wyodak Mine

02:43
The Wyodak mine is a coal mine located 6 miles east of Gillette, Wyoming in the United States in the coal-rich Powder River Basin. The operation is an open pit mine that utilizes a truck and shovel mining method to produce a low-sulfur, sub-bituminous coal that is used for domestic energy generation. The mine ships its coal to the adjacent Wyodak power plant and to other customers via railroad. The mine is operated by Wyodak Resources Development, a subsidiary of the Black Hills Corporation. As of 2009, Wyodak had reserves of 294mm tons of sub-bituminous coal and a maximum permitted production capacity of 10mm tons per year. Typical annual production has been in the 5-6mm ton range for the last several years though. In 2008, the mine produced just over 6.0 million short tons of coal, making it the 30th-largest producer of coal in the United States. The average quality of the coal produced from the Wyodak Mine is 8,050 BTU/lb, 0.40% Sulfur, 6.0% Ash, and 0.94% Sodium (of the ash). Train loading operations at the mine are done by a flood loading system that is coupled to a "weigh-in-motion" track scale system. Silo capacity at the mine's rail loop, which can accommodate a single unit train, is 24,000 tons.

How Coal Is Mined and Refined - Top Coal Mining Spots in the World - Documentaries. Welcome to DOCUMENTARIES - home of the best documentary movies and documentary films. Coal mining is the process of extracting coal from the ground. Coal is valued for its energy content, and, since the 1880s, has been widely used to generate electricity. Steel and cement industries use coal as a fuel for extraction of iron from iron ore and for cement production. In the United Kingdom and South Africa, a coal mine and its structures are a colliery, a coal mine a pit, and the above-ground structures the pit head. In Australia, "colliery" generally refers to an underground coal mine. In the United States, "colliery" has been used to describe a coal mine operation but nowadays the word is not commonly used. Coal mining has had many developments over the recent years, from the early days of men tunnelling, digging and manually extracting the coal on carts, to large open cut and long wall mines. Mining at this scale requires the use of draglines, trucks, conveyors, hydraulic jacks and shearers. World's Largest Mine - Bingham Canyon Copper Open Pit Mine

04:43
This is one massive hole. Here's text from the current wiki: The Bingham Canyon Mine is an open-pit mining operation extracting a large porphyry copper deposit southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, in the Oquirrh Mountains. It is owned by Rio Tinto, an international mining and exploration company headquartered in the United Kingdom. The copper operations at Bingham Canyon Mine are managed through Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation which operates the mine, a concentrator plant, a smelter, and a refinery. The mine has been in production since 1906, and has resulted in the creation of a pit over 0.75 mile (1.2 km) deep, 2.5 miles (4 km) wide, and covering 1,900 acres (7.7 km²). According to Kennecott, it is the world's largest man-made excavation. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966 under the name Bingham Canyon Open Pit Copper Mine.

WAVE Players Lampoon Corrupt Michigan Officials, Politicians, Crooked Sulfide Mining Company

10:56
(Marquette, MI) - A new environmental group, WAVE (Wave Action Vital Earth) is the action arm of Save The Wild U.P. The battle continues in 2011 to stop the Rio Tinto/Kennecott Minerals Sulfide "Acid" Mine on the Yellow Dog Plains in a remote area in north Marquette County near Lake Superior and the tiny hamlet of Big Bay, MI. The WAVE Players have decided to use humor -- because the real facts (keep reading) are enough to make honest people cry. Documents have revealed a possible criminal conspiracy between the state of Michigan, Kennecott Minerals and Rio Tinto. Not something unusual for the international mining giant Rio Tinto, whose minions are charged with a wide range of crimes across the globe including bribery, violating environment laws and human rights violations. "Rio Tinto was complicit in war crimes and crimes against humanity," stated the residents of the island of Bougainville in Papua New Guinea in a lawsuit filed against Rio Tinto. In China, Rio Tinto bosses were arrested for bribery -- a practice the company has used in many projects in order to get politicians, police, prosecutors and judges on their side. So why then -- did the state of Michigan decide to get into a toxic bed of sulfuric acid with Rio Tinto - including blatantly violating treaties with the Ojibwa/Anishinaabe -- with plans to destroy sacred Eagle Rock (an ions old Native American outdoor church). In addition to crimes, all mines opened by Kennecott Minerals have serious environmental problems. MI Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm (Dem.) and Attorney General Mike Cox (State's top cop) refused to answer questions about a financial connection with the mine owners. WAVE and other U.P. residents have asked the MI Attorney General Bill Schuette (Republican) to investigate a series of suspicious actions involving Rio Tinto and state officials. Those suspected of wrongdoing included employees of the MI Dept. of Environmental Quality, Gov. Granholm and her staff. Previous Attorney General Mike Cox (Republican) -- refused to investigate the allegations and refused to answer questions about his (or family) financial connections with the mining company. Will MI Attorney General Bill Schuette open a probe? Is it strange that MI Governor Granholm and the 7 candidates for her job (included Mike Cox, future Gov. Rick Snyder) all refused to reveal any financial connections of any kind with Rio Tinto, Kennecott Minerals and its subsidiaries, agents, lobbyists etc. All eight could have stated they have no financial connections - instead they refused comment. [Wikipedia] Lynemouth power station

23:57
Lynemouth Power Station is a coal and biomass fired power station which provides electricity for the UK National Grid. Until March 2012, it was the main source of electricity for the nearby Alcan Lynemouth Aluminium Smelter. It is located on the coast of Northumberland, north east of the town of Ashington in north east England. The station has stood as a landmark on the Northumberland coast since it opened in 1972, and has been privately owned by aluminium company Rio Tinto Alcan throughout its operation until December 2013, when RWE npower took over. In January 2016 it has been acquired by Energetický a průmyslový holding. The station is one of the most recently built coal-fired power stations in the United Kingdom, but with a generating capacity of only 420 megawatts (MW), is now one of the smallest operating. Two separate wind farm plans currently have permission to be built near the station, one for a 13 turbine wind farm near the smelter and another three turbine wind farm to the north of the station. In 2009, Alcan announced that they hope to fit the station with carbon capture and storage technology. In 2011, it was announced that the power station may be converted to burn biomass only, in a bid to avoid government legislation. In January 2016 the station was purchased by Energetický a průmyslový holding (EPH). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lynemouth_power_station Please support this channel and help me upload more videos.
