This latest Ask GN episode (#71) talks undervolting damage to GPUs and CPUs, overclocking damage, and out of the box thermals. Ad: CableMod PRO ModMesh sleeved cables on Amazon (https://goo.gl/T28tMi) Important notes on nail polish for liquid metal: From VSG of Thermal Bench: "Nail polish typically has nitrocellulose or another functionalized cellulose in it which forms a thin, stable film without a gap over items such as fingernails, or the capacitors you used it over. Alkyl acetate helps move it into place, and then promptly evaporates leaving behind just the thin film. Some nail polish formulations have benzene derivates. Toluene is a prime candidate used by some companies, which does a similar job as nitrocellulose. Look at the composition before buying or using these, as toluene isn't nice to play with even at lower concentrations." TIMESTAMPS 02:15 – Notwist: “@Steve Burke quick question: can undervolting a GPU hurt the card in any way? Particularly if, during testing, you undervolt too far and it gets unstable?” 04:54 – PimpThySky: “#askgn-questions Why did Nvidia decide to go 20xx instead of 11xx like a lot of people were saying? Thx for great content.” 05:56 – Galiu: “#askgn-questions @Steve Burke Is it possible to damage/degrade a GPU more than in a normal use case (base clocks) JUST BY overclocking the memory too high? No overvoltage, power limit would be under 70 and good temps (55-60c). I'm asking this because for example, I have a MSI 1060 3GB with Samsung memory. I can overclock it with +1000 and it doesn't crash when mining. But in benchmarking I can see artifacts, so I keep my OC at +700 even though I could potentially get some extra MH.” 12:12 - Andrewz Ravenz: “I took my reference R9 290X to a computer shop for changing the fan, thermal pads and thermal paste. A day later they called me telling that the heat sink is damaged and needs replacing. I asked what was wrong with it and they said that it had ran at high temperatures and has changed color. I told them to keep as it is for the time being. I am not sure if I should ask them to get a new heat sink because it does not make sense that it is unusable just because the color has changed and that heat sinks get damaged from running at high temperatures. Maybe the liquid or gas in the heat pipes is permeated although that would not make sense because why would there be a gas or a liquid with a temperature range that lets it permeate at a temperature where graphics cards would work at. My question is that could a heat sink get damaged from a graphics card at 100 °C or even 120 °C in an extreme case scenario? At what temperature does the gas or liquid in a heat pipe permeate?” 16:33 - Homer Thompson: “I don't want a free shirt, but can I have a free puck?” 17:33 - Blessman Fred: “Why don't you guys show off some crazy hardware builds like a lot of other YouTubers? Not necessarily custom loop stuff.” 18:22 – SerpentXSF: “@Steve Burke #askgn-questions Steve if I used liquid metal on GPU die, while using nail polish or electrical tape to protect surrounding areas, how often would I need to maintenance the graphics card? Would the electrical tape or nail polish degraded over time?” 21:48 - II ARROWS: “How do you think the original "OUT OF THE BOX THERMALS!" feels right now? Does he still watch you?” 23:12 – silkmonkey: “When did you have a surprising triumph (ie reviving dead hardware) or screw up (ie broke a part with ESD) and what did you learn?” 25:20 – Karl: “#AskGN With all these TG panel cases coming out, like the Corsair 500D with gaps between the panels for dust entry, does this affect Airflow/Thermals within the case or is it minimal? Would a non-gap sidepanel perform better? Airtight sidepanel?” 27:59 – Brammm: “@Steve Burke apologies if it's been asked/answered before, but in your latest ask GN you ranted about commenters for a little while and you mentioned you weren't planning on doing pre-release content. We know you have some kind of professional relationship with LTT and I saw your Floatbird tweet to Luke, would you consider using Floatplane or rather stick with Patreon?” 30:45 - Resident Peanute: “What’s Snowflakes out of the bed thermals?” We have a new GN store: https://store.gamersnexus.net/ Like our content? The Gigabyte Windforce R9 290 (default OC 1040mhz/5000mhz) is unstable between 95- 100% GPU load on its default factory settings using Gigabyte's own supplied software OC Guru II. However problem seems to go away if I use AMD OverDrive... I either have a faulty R9 290 or the Gigabyte's own OC software cannot stably run it's own product at its OC factory specs. --- UPDATE: It's running stable at 1050.4Mhz (GPU 1% increase in AMD Overdrive) with no extra Powertune. So I'm inclined to think Gigabyte's own software is faulty.

I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR YOU BRICKING YOUR CARD. THIS IS VERY EXPERIMENTAL STUFF RIGHT HERE! EDIT: i might of selected the wrong mhz in the video but its just to show the process really, not for you to copy exactly what i did. when i do this i also uninstall afterburner after resetting the overclock to stock in AB and then in crimson and verify in gpu-z that its stock. then i flash the bios after a reboot. then i reboot and uninstall the drivers with add/remove programs. then i go into the registry and clean out the known places AMD or ATI TECHNOLOGIES stuff is... then i install 15.11.1 or whatever is the latest catalyst beta and reboot then install crimson over it and reboot again... but i don't always re-install drivers if the only thing i change is a memory timing, also i don't mess with this anymore i leave mine stock or just shifted timings until we have a way to verify memory errors correctly. a couple more points in a benchmark isn't worth any instability when i game (even tho i don't have any at the moment ya never know when the memory controller is going to get fed up with correcting errors) Edited by navjack27 - Today at 1:07 am

http://www.cryptorushnews.com The video demonstrates my scrypt mining rig. I have mined litecoin and dogecoin with it. It has 3 Powercolor 7850 2GB cards that mine about 306 KH/s per card without being overclocked and using 420 watts of power. Completely overclocked this rig will achieve 1200 KH/s and uses about 500 watts of power. Please like, comment and subscribe. Below is a list of equipment used in this rig, as well as amazon links. Below are some alternatives. I spent a little more on the CPU and RAM above so I can use those parts in a gaming machine once this rig becomes obsolete for mining or for when I upgrade to scrypt ASIC miners. AMD Sempron 145 Processor http://amzn.to/1cUYOWq G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) http://amzn.to/Mte8z2 Also if you want to spend more money on the rig but get much more hashing power you can go with better GPU's that have a hash rate at about twice as much as the 7850's. I'm talking about the 7950's and they are listed below. If you go with this option, you will need a slightly bigger power supply which I also listed below. The below combination can also be used with the cheaper CPU and RAM. MSI Radeon HD 7950 3GB TWIN FROZR GPU http://amzn.to/1iseKjM Seasonic 860w Platinum PSU http://amzn.to/1kd1Mtg

Here's how to mine with the optimal settings. 1. Install the most recent NVidia drivers (Do not enable SLI if you have more than one card) 2. Download Cudaminer from https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=167229.0: Must be: cudaminer-2013-12-18.zip [32+64bit version] (7.2 MB) 3. Create a Batch file with the following settings: One GPU cudaminer.exe -H 2 -d 0 -i 0 -l T12x32 -m 1 -C 0 -o Two GPU cudaminer.exe -H 2 -d 0,1 -i 0,0 -l T12x32,T12x32 -m 1,1 -C 0,2 -o Observations: If running windows, install windows 8.1 x64 because the driver crash recovery is better (Compared to windows 7) When running 1 GTX 780 system was using 435 Watts with one card at full load. When running 2 GTX 780 system was using 735 Watts with both cards at full load. When running with more than one GTX 780 you will have heat issues with the top card. You can always buy extenders, remember to order quickly because shipping is very slow (from china). Cards ran stable @ 105% power target and small gpu overclock = 100-125 mhz (580-620 khash/sec) Using T12x32 Netted the best gains Installing one Noctua NF-A14 did wonders for the tempetures. This fan produces 140 m3/h. I recommend keeping the temps below 80. Running cudaminer in x86 will net you better results (+15%)

READ THE DESCRIPTION! In this video I will show you how to fix random driver crash on AMD Radeon and avoid black screen of death. I recognized that the driver crash more offen when I play older games. Maybe it's because there is no need for maximal performance then the driver incrases and decrases the frequency when it needs. So I decided that I will incrase all WattMan States to the max so the GPU always will work at maximum performance when it doesn't needed too. The result is there is no crash anymore. I think this is the only solution yet. YOU SHOULD SET THE MAX SETTING ON 'STATE 1' TOO!!!! I couldn't modify mine, because of screen recording, but it should be on max too. Part 5 of my mining rig creation video. Some details. The rig consists of: (6) MSI Twin Frozr R9 270 video cards Asrock H81 Pro BTC motherboard 4GB Kingston DDR3 Memory Stick Thermaltake 1275W PSU Rosewill RD700 PSU Intel Haswell G3220 1150 dual-core CPU Add2PSU plug to link PSU's 320GB 2.5" SATA HD (Ideally all you need is a 64GB SSD) Windows 8.1 I use cgminer 3.7.2 to mine for coins. And after much toiling (and copying) I've come up with the following scrypt. Lemme know if you come up with something that gives a higher hash rate: del scrypt*.bin setx GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT 100 setx GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS 1 cgminer.exe --scrypt -o stratum+tcp://megahash.wemineltc.com:3333 -u cavermark1.1 -p Trumpet1 -g 1 -w 256 -I 20 --thread-concurrency 24000 --auto-fan --temp-target 60 --temp-overheat 70 --temp-cutoff 75 --lookup-gap 2 --gpu-engine 1130 --gpu-memclock 1500 --gpu-powertune 30 --no-submit-stale Bear in mind that this is for Windows. The scypt for Linux is slightly different. Well, that's it. If you have any questions or comments, leave them below. I'll try to answer them as soon as I see them. Oh and don't forget to like if you like what you see.

The main "ambient" sound that you hear is my cpu coolers crappy ball bearing, but it doesnt matter, because the card is louder anyways. The audio gain is pretty high so in real life its not that horrible, other than that, the card itself is awesome, runs everything on maximum settings.

AMD have touted in 2017 that they are releasing a technology known as high bandwith cache control, which is a controller enabled on Vega Cards, it is supposed to allow you use different sources of memory for less important things, so the highspeed HBM2 can be used for the most important parts of the game. However today I test this out and realistically the results differ from the spec sheet quite substantially. Get a Vega Card here (if you are a lucky): http://amzn.to/2wxE8mZ Enjoy the Content? Jan 21 2015 **UPDATE**possible fix for AMD/ATI device driver crashes Go into your command prompt CMD then type regedit and hit enter and yes from there double click these folders: -HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -HARDWARE -DEVICEMAP -VIDEO then find the file that has REG_DWORD in it and dbl click put the setting to 0 This turns the TDR off. So far it's working for me Don't ask about the video I was having a bad night lol sorry Finally got the HD Sapphire 7990 Graphics card in :-) compute performance is a whoping 8.2 TFLOPS ! :-O it's got the HD3D technology and the APP Acceleration technology. Came with EIGHT FREE GAMES lol which I am using and loving I can't bitch about free stuff ! PLUS I can run 5 screens on this card :D Also had the GCN 29nm architecture which is designed for DirectX 11. This card is like my old 5970 which also had the dual radeon gpu's glad I was able to still go from the 6 and 8 pin to the 8 and 8 pin :D off the same PSU This has nothing to do with being a " fan boy/girl " either I have used many Nvidia cards in the past and loved them too. The 7990 got a lot of bad heat for certain issue like coil whine to running hot and the typical bad drivers that seem to come with owning anything AMD related lol HOWEVER after having this card for a month I can tell you YES there are issue...i spent many night up with an issue where if i was running lets say World Of Warcraft and went to open a video or certain websites on another screen I would get a black screen and the sound would hang for about 5 seconds then the computer would go into a hard boot....I tried everything !! I even deleted a certain windows update known to cause issues from april 16 2013. I figured it was a flashplayer issue as it was starting to happen even on websites like Wowhead and MMO as soon as an add would show BOOM BSOD !! What I finally did was stop using firefox for now and switched to google chrome I also used AMD's driver uninstaller and wiped the drivers off the new card AS WELL AS the chip set. I am now running the 13.5 beta drivers with Google Chrome and I can no longer force a crash on the system. so now that this issue has been resolved lets talk about the drivers. The 13.5 beta drivers seem to be working rather well on this card even if they are behind the date that was installed ! I never had to turn off anything like hardware acceleration or Vsync all the typical trouble shooting crap you usually need to go through. The card is actually running better and I have noticed a difference in FPS in all games like WoW, Bioshock,Lotro fir the better :D Lets talk about the coil whine....It really isn't that bad to be honest lol Some people have stated that they never got it with this card, while mine has a slight whine when I am really pushing it, even with stress tests it didn't seem to get any worse than a slight whine. And given the air pushing into my HAF case and the fans I really can't noticed it any more ! I know most would rather water cool a system using this card but i can tell you the way my case is set up I am not running overly hot even while taxing the system. If you were to have two of these then YES I would water cool . MY TEMPS are usually running IDLE at anywhere between 31°C - 35°C° AT LOAD ( usually running two windows of WoW) I go between 68°C - 76°C I think these cooler temps are partly because this is the Sapphire brand, I have hear that other brands run hotter and a few run even slightly cooler ! THE CARD CASE...I still don't like it..but that's just me ! I liked the inclosed case that the 5970 had and even when I opened it up it was spotless inside ! I have already cleaned this card 4 times in a month just because I clean often and I can say without a doubt it get dirty faster ! HOWEVER...I love the three red fans lol It look super sweet with the new glow in my case and they don't sound even half as loud as the old blower style fan on the 5970. I guess you trade certain things for better features right ? SUCH IS CHANGE ! Watts... I am running a TX 850w Corsair PSU which is well enough but I will be upgrading soon as usually PSU have about 5 years life or less and start to weaken or at least they do for some people. It can never hurt to have one on hand just in case but I will be going bigger better lol about 1000w If you were to install two of these cards you would need something bigger plus that also depends on what else you have in or attached to your PC. I would go with at least 1200W or even 1250W and if you are over clocking these go with water cooling !!

A quick unboxing of one of my new Gigabyte Radeon R9 280x Windforce Edition graphics cards. I'll be using two of these in CrossFireX mode on my computer to replace the two Radeon HD 5870s I'm currently using, but I will first be waiting for some RAM to arrive and for a full driver release instead of using the Beta drivers. These cards are faster than both of my current cards combined, and even though I'm using the 2.0 graphics BUS, I should be able to run the cards without any performance loss, despite the fact that they're made for the 3.0 graphics BUS. If the gigatransfers and memory bandwidth is confusing and you're finding it difficult to understand how this card can run on the 2.0 graphics BUS without any performance loss, feel free to check my notes and learn the relationship between gigatransfers and the graphics BUS memory bandwidth here: https://www.facebook.com/notes/shawn-waltenburg/graphics-bandwidth-notes/456140357840623 You can purchase a Gigabyte Windforce R9 280x graphics card here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125475 You can find all playlists for my channel here: https://www.youtube.com/user/TrueShawnBW/videos?sort=dd&view=1 Comment, Like, Subscribe, Share.
