7th Annual Step Show Competition Highlights
Seven teams competed in the 2017 Step Show Competition at West Creek High School Saturday. The annual event, sponsored by LEAP Organization saw teams from Clarksville compete with those from Hopkinsville and Nashville for cash prizes. "This is a showcase that allows local youth to show off their step and dance moves," LEAP's Richard Garrett said. "We're excited, this is the first time we've been able to recruit teams from outside Montgomery County to come out and compete, and support performing arts." Saturday's prize for the 1st place team was $250, which was awarded to help further fund their program. "LEAP never expects to make a lot of money on this event," Garrett said. "We try to make this affordable for everyone, so we only charge $5 for tickets. On average, we have about 1,000 people come out. It's always fun to watch. These kids put on a great show." It was just announced that LEAP is in the process of purchasing the Wilma Rudolph Blvd. facility where it is headquartered. Garrett says that the organization has about 70 kids active in its programs at all times. Over the course of a year, about 200 kids will benefit from LEAP's various offerings, and since the program's inception, more than 1,000 kids have been served. This year's 1st place team is Nashville's Madison Community Center, which was comprised of 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students. The Christian County High School FF Steppers took 2nd place, narrowly beating Rossview High School's 3rd place score. LEAP's next big event will be its Dining with the Stars Gala in March. Garrett describes the event as a showcase of talents. There will be singing, spoken word recitals and an essay contest," Garrett said. "Scholarships will be given, and this is another chance for us to highlight the achievments of some of our incredible young people."
