Searching and mining trillions of time series subsequences under dynamic time warping KDD 2012 Thanawin Rakthanmanon Bilson Campana Abdullah Mueen Gustavo Batista Brandon Westover Qiang Zhu Jesin Zakaria Eamonn Keogh Most time series data mining algorithms use similarity search as a core subroutine, and thus the time taken for similarity search is the bottleneck for virtually all time series data mining algorithms. The difficulty of scaling search to large datasets largely explains why most academic work on time series data mining has plateaued at considering a few millions of time series objects, while much of industry and science sits on billions of time series objects waiting to be explored. In this work we show that by using a combination of four novel ideas we can search and mine truly massive time series for the first time. We demonstrate the following extremely unintuitive fact; in large datasets we can exactly search under DTW much more quickly than the current state-of-the-art Euclidean distance search algorithms. We demonstrate our work on the largest set of time series experiments ever attempted. In particular, the largest dataset we consider is larger than the combined size of all of the time series datasets considered in all data mining papers ever published. We show that our ideas allow us to solve higher-level time series data mining problem such as motif discovery and clustering at scales that would otherwise be untenable. In addition to mining massive datasets, we will show that our ideas also have implications for real-time monitoring of data streams, allowing us to handle much faster arrival rates and/or use cheaper and lower powered devices than are currently possible.

IMS-Microsoft Research Workshop: Foundations of Data Science - Predicting Travel Time Reliability using Mobile Phone GPS Data Probabilistic forecasts of travel times on a road network can be used for risk-averse routing, for reporting travel time reliability to a user, or as a component of fleet vehicle decision-support systems. Many of these uses (such as those for mapping services like Bing or Google Maps) require predictions for arbitrary routes in the road network, at arbitrary times; the highest-volume source of data for this purpose is GPS data from mobile phones. We introduce a method ("TRIP") to predict the probability distribution of travel time on an arbitrary route in a road network at an arbitrary time, using GPS data from mobile phones or other probe vehicles. TRIP gives informed predictions for parts of the road network with little data, captures weekly cycles in congestion levels, and is computationally efficient even for very large road networks and datasets. We apply TRIP to predict travel time on the road network of the Seattle metropolitan region, based on GPS data from Windows phones. TRIP provides improved interval predictions (forecast ranges for travel time) relative to Microsoft’s engine for travel time prediction as used in Bing Maps. It also provides deterministic predictions that are almost as accurate as those from Bing Maps, despite using fewer explanatory variables, and differing from the observed travel times by only 10:4% on average over 36,493 test trips. To our knowledge TRIP is the first method to provide accurate predictions of travel time reliability for complete, large-scale road networks.

Abstract Philipp Kranen (RWTH Aachen University, Germany, CS) Clustering streaming data requires algorithms which are capable of updating clustering results for the incoming data. As data is constantly arriving, time for processing is limited. Clustering has to be performed in a single pass over the incoming data and within the possibly varying inter-arrival times of the stream. Likewise, memory is limited, making it impossible to store all data. For clustering, we are faced with the challenge of maintaining a current result that can be presented to the user at any given time. In this talk the ClusTree algorithm will be presented that automatically adapts to the speed of the data stream. It makes best use of the time available under the current constraints to provide a clustering of the objects seen up to that point. The approach incorporates the age of the objects to reflect the greater importance of more recent data. For efficient and effective handling, a compact and self-adaptive index structure is employed to maintain stream summaries. Additionally solutions are discussed for handling very fast streams through aggregation mechanisms, for improving the clustering result on slower streams as long as time permits, and for explicit noise handling in anytime stream clustering. The talk concludes with a view on the evaluation of stream clustering algorithms using the MOA framework and the CMM measure. The talk is based on a 2011 KAIS Journal article and contains material from further research by the author including papers from ICDM 2010 and KDD 2011. This work has been supported by the UMIC Research Centre, RWTH Aachen University, Germany.

This talk will describe recent work by the NASA Data Sciences Group on data-driven anomaly detection applied to air traffic control over Los Angeles, Denver, and New York. This data mining approach is designed to discover operationally significant flight anomalies, which were not pre-defined. These methods are complementary to traditional exceedance-based methods, in that they are more likely to yield false alarms, but they are also more likely to find previously-unknown anomalies. We discuss the discoveries that our algorithms have made that exceedance-based methods did not identify. Nikunj Oza is the leader of the Data Sciences Group at NASA Ames Research Center. He also leads a NASA project team which applies data mining to aviation safety. Dr. OzaΔ…s 40+ research papers represent his research interests which include data mining, machine learning, anomaly detection, and their applications to Aeronautics and Earth Science. He received the Arch T. Colwell Award for co-authoring one of the five most innovative technical papers selected from 3300+ SAE technical papers in 2005. His data mining team received the 2010 NASA Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate Associate AdministratorΔ…s Award for best technology achievements by a team. He received his B.S. in Mathematics with Computer Science from MIT in 1994, and M.S. (in 1998) and Ph.D. (in 2001) in Computer Science from the University of California at Berkeley.

Our algorithm efficiently routes new data points to the leaves of an incrementally-built tree. Motivated by the desire for both accuracy and speed, our approach performs tree rotations for the sake of enhancing subtree purity and encouraging balancedness. We prove that, under a natural separability assumption, our non-greedy algorithm will produce trees with perfect dendrogram purity regardless of online data arrival order. Our experiments demonstrate that PERCH constructs more accurate trees than other tree-building clustering algorithms and scales well with both N and K, achieving a higher quality clustering than the strongest flat clustering competitor in nearly half the time. Space APPS Challenge "ASTEROID MINING" 2016 Project: "Space Cowboy" Take for example an asteroid a little larger than "2005 YU55" or "asteroid 2004 bl86" or the famous asteroid "Apophis" this new asteroid course is directed towards the earth and this time will impact earth, but calm down!!!, this will happen within a few years. The first and most important is to re-direct the asteroid into a new static position, this new position should be as fundamental requirements that must be far enough from the earth to avoid alarming humanity and close enough to extract "from the asteroid" valuable mineral resources. The first is to send a space charge that carries within it a huge "canvas" that support high tension or stretching (such as Kevlar) and resistance to everything the space has to offer (changes in temperature, radiation, etc.), now suppose that this "canvas" shaped is "octagonal" indicating that has 8 "corners" of each corner come out 8 "ropes" whose length is determined by the size of the asteroid, for an asteroid of a size of 558 meters long by 227 meters wide, we need a huge "canvas" and about 7 ropes of one kilometer and a half long and one last rope 2 and a half kilometers long (this is the most important rope No.8) and at the end each "rope" there will be a "emitter" that later I will explain its functions and features. This "canvas" is directed perpendicularly to its rotation angle and trying to land at the center of rotation of the asteroid. At the end of each "rope" will "emitter", emitter have the function of transmitting the location of the asteroid, from time to time, they will issue a trackable signal to determine its location in space, are also composed with a propulsion system as "backpacks space" used by astronauts to move in their spacewalks, this is in order to maintain the "canvas" stretched and direct it towards the center of rotation of the asteroid, also must synchronize the rotation of the asteroid. This animation illustrates how analysis of Fermi data reveals new pulsars. Fermi's LAT records the precise arrival time and approximate direction of the gamma rays it detects, but to identify a pulsar requires additional information -- its position in the sky, its rotation period, and the rate at which the pulsar's rotation is slowing. The pulsars are so far away that even Fermi's sensitive LAT detects very few gamma rays from these objects -- as few as a single photon per 100,000 rotations. The Hannover team used new methods to carry out a so-called blind search, using computers to check many different combinations of position and rotational behavior, to see if these matched with the arrival times of the Fermi LAT photons coming from near this direction. The search used the 8,000 photons deemed most probable to come from a pulsar at the putative position, which Fermi's LAT had collected during its three years in orbit. When the photon arrival times match up with the putative pulsar position and rotation model, a regular pattern of peaks appears in the gamma-ray photon counts, as a function of the rotational position of the pulsar, and a new gamma-ray pulsar has been discovered. Large scale sentiment learning with limited labels Vasileios Iosifidis (Leibniz University of Hanover) Eirini Ntoutsi (Leibniz University of Hanover) Sentiment analysis is an important task in order to gain insights over the huge amounts of opinions that are generated in the social media on a daily basis. Although there is a lot of work on sentiment analysis, there are no many datasets available which one can use for developing new methods and for evaluation. To the best of our knowledge, the largest dataset for sentiment analysis is TSentiment, a 1.6 millions machine-annotated tweets dataset covering a period of about 3 months in 2009. This dataset however is too short and therefore insufficient to study heterogeneous, fast evolving streams. Therefore, we annotated the Twitter dataset of 2015 (275 million tweets) and we make it publicly available for research. For the annotation we leveraged the power of unlabeled data, together with labeled data which we derived using emoticons and emoticon-lexicons, using semi-supervised learning and in particular, Self-Learning and Co-Training. Our main contribution is the provision of the TSentiment15 dataset together with insights from the analysis, which includes both batch-and stream-processing of the data. In the former, all labeled and unlabeled data are available to the algorithms from the beginning, whereas in the later, they are revealed gradually based on their arrival time in the stream. RSC: Mining and Modeling Temporal Activity in Social Media KDD 2015 Presentation Alceu Ferraz Costa Yuto Yamaguchi Agma Juci Machado Traina Caetano Traina, Jr. Christos Faloutsos Can we identify patterns of temporal activities caused by human communications in social media? Is it possible to model these patterns and tell if a user is a human or a bot based only on the timing of their postings? Social media services allow users to make postings, generating large datasets of human activity time-stamps. In this paper we analyze time-stamp data from social media services and find that the distribution of postings inter-arrival times (IAT) is characterized by four patterns: (i) positive correlation between consecutive IATs, (ii) heavy tails, (iii) periodic spikes and (iv) bimodal distribution. Based on our findings, we propose Rest-Sleep-and-Comment (RSC), a generative model that is able to match all four discovered patterns. We demonstrate the utility of RSC by showing that it can accurately fit real time-stamp data from Reddit and Twitter. We also show that RSC can be used to spot outliers and detect users with non-human behavior, such as bots. We validate RSC using real data consisting of over 35 million postings from Twitter and Reddit. RSC consistently provides a better fit to real data and clearly outperform existing models for human dynamics. RSC was also able to detect bots with a precision higher than 94%.

Talk from the SotM-EU 2011 conference in Vienna Details about the talk: Public transport location data recorded over long periods of time as well as ``live'' feeds containing such data are increasingly becoming available. Over the last decade, the bus fleet in the UK public transport sector has become equipped with Real Time Information (RTI) systems. For example, it was reported in the recent UK Public Transport Technology Survey [Kn08], based on data received from local authorities in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland in 2008, that 56 Local Authorities (compared with 37 in 2007) had operational RTI systems covering approximately 185 towns and cities each with a population over 10,000. Congestion in urban areas causes financial loss to business and increased use of energy compared with freeflowing traffic. Providing citizens with accurate information on traffic conditions can encourage journeys at times of low congestion and uptake of public transport. Installing the measurement infrastructure in a city to provide this information is expensive and potentially invades privacy. Increasingly, public transport vehicles are equipped with sensors to provide realtime arrival time estimates, but these data are sparse. Our work within the TIME project [TIME,Be10,Be11] shows how these data can be used to (i) estimate journey times experienced by road users generally, and (ii) evaluate congestion levels in urban areas and thus provide better information for road users and traffic managers. In this talk I will describe the bus data and show how their specifics may be used in conjunction with OpenStreetMap data, in order to process and anayse the data, and reconstruct useful information on transport traffic flow dynamics. We have found that OpenStreetMap data and some of its features (not only the topological description of the road network, but its more detailed infrastructure and meta characteristics as well) have a great potential in analysing public transport data in a meaningful way. This, however, naturally relies heavily on the accuracy, coverage and level of detalisation of corresponding features of the map, that is on the state of the map. I will discuss these issues using real data in the context of the city of Cambridge, UK. This talk is based on a joint work together with Jean Bacon, Alastair Beresford, David Evans, Adrian Friday, and Richard Gibbens within the TIME project [TIME]. We acknowledge the support of the UK EPSRC grant EP/C547632/1 and wish to thank Stagecoach, ACIS, and Cambridgeshire County Council for the bus location data used in this study. Details about the speaker: Dr Andrei Bejan is currently a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Statistics in the TIME (Transport Information Monitoring Environment) project at the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory (www.cl.cam.ac.uk/research/time) His interests within this project include: statistical modelling, data mining and analysis of large scale (archived and real-time) urban transport traffic data, exploring how sensor networks and distributed systems can be used to improve transport traffic management and control, and studying dynamics of velocity fields on urban road networks. The project is an umbrella framework for research, application development and deployment of transport monitoring systems in the city of Cambridge. Dr Bejan has a PhD in Statistics (Heriot-Watt, Edinburgh, 2010) and Operational Research (State University of Moldova, 2007). His research interests include modelling and analysis of priority queueing systems with switchover times as well as inference and optimal experimental design for network and random graph interaction models (transportation networks, plant epidemiology and disease spread models, social networks). Other interests include spectral theory of sample covariance matrices and Tracy–Widom distributions. He has significant experience in applied statistical modelling with large scale data sets and use of spatial and mapping data. He actively participates in an interdisciplinary research. New type of attack: Kick sand/water in eyes. Condensed leathers together into fewer types. Instead of a separate type for each animal, there are categories. You can now smooth natural rough rock walls into high-quality walls. Trained animal skills and tameness now decay over time. Animals can revert to the wild, depending on their natural wildness. Deep drill use will now sometimes cause insect attacks (by tunneling through the ground near the drill, with a warning). New edge shader for blueprints looks much nicer and more visible than before. Workbench bills can now be assigned to specific colonists. Added β€œShow what will buy” window which shows all items a trader will buy. Trees’ color now depends on the current season. Added tainted-apparel thing filter. Increased prisoner recruitment chance and added a resistance which must be reduced to zero before recruitment can begin. Animals can now be renamed. Animals can now get diseases. Added an automatic destroyed building replacement toggle. When active, a destroyed building will leave behind a blueprint and be automatically rebuilt. Added translation report tool: Generates a report about the currently-loaded language data stating which translations are missing, which are unnecessary, and lots of other useful information. Added translation cleaner tool: Corrects many common problems in translation files and adds/updates English language reference for every string in the game. It’s now possible to mass-cancel all designations with a designator’s right-click menu. It’s now possible to forbid/unforbid all items and rearm all traps with a designator’s right-click menu. You can now drag and reorder colonists in the colonist bar. Social interaction log now has flavorful randomized text instead of the same repeated interaction text every time. Mods page now has a search bar so you can easily find one mod in your list of hundreds. In some very bad situations, a mysterious Man in Black may arrive. Can he set things right in these parts? Armor system reworked into a 3-outcome system with armor penetration. The armor penetration of the weapon is subtracted from the armor value of the armor. This gives an effective armor rating, measured as a percent. We roll a RNG out of 100%. If the result is under half the effective AR, the hit is totally deflected. If the result is over half the effective AR, but under the effective AR, the hit is mitigated – damage is reduced by half and sharp hits are converted to bruise. If the result is over the effective AR, the hit passes the armor and applies normally. As before, armor is applied in sequence from the outside in. AR maxes out at 200%. Default armor penetration is 1.5% per point of damage, but some weapons vary from this. Long-range mineral scanner can now be tuned to seek specific minerals, and must be worked by a researcher. Battles in the Combat tab are now named. Items of the same type in the Items tab are now grouped together.
