Abandoned. What makes people leave a town and not even bring their belongings with them? Leave a town to rot. This, everyone, is the story of a Ghost town. Not just any ghost town, but the biggest, most sprawling, massive ghost town in California. The one with the bad reputation. The one that once, reportedly, inspired a little girl to write in her diary, "Goodbye God, we're going to Bodie" Come with me, Justin Scarred, on a trip through time and a lot of miles of dirt road as we explore California's biggest ghost town, Bodie! Near the town of Lone Pine, California, is a string of “almost” ghost towns. This video takes you on a virtual road visiting these towns, including instructions on how to find them yourself. Learn more details on this trip using our blog at www.BackRoadsWest.com/blog/ghost-town-near-lone-pine This is the second version of this video. Because we used ragtime music of the time of the ghost towns from Scott Joplin, YouTube claimed they all had copyrights. All of Joplin’s music is in the public domain, plus we have used Joplin’s music on other videos, so we’re not sure what YouTube’s problem was.

This was probably my favorite place to explore ever. Hidden in the Arizona mountains sets Ruby, AZ the most well preserved ghost towns to exist. Also i hate that i must say this however the town was abandoned in the 40's but it was founded over 150 years ago making a 200 + year old town. We had heard of this mysterious abandoned motel on the way to Las Vegas which was rumored to be haunted by it's previous owners... We don't believe in paranormal activities or that spirits can inhabit a place but this time.. We might have been proven wrong. We do NOT advise that you go visit this place and we do not promote trespassing by any means. Be very careful anytime you go to an abandoned place as they can be highly dangerous. Who are we? Bodie is a ghost town in the Bodie Hills east of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in Mono County, California, United States, about 75 miles (121 km) southeast of Lake Tahoe. It became a boom town in 1876 and following years, after the discovery of a profitable line of gold, and suddenly attracted several thousand residents. It is located 12 mi (19 km) east-southeast of Bridgeport, at an elevation of 8379 feet (2554 m). The U.S. Department of the Interior recognizes the designated Bodie Historic District as a National Historic Landmark. Driving between Las Vegas and Reno Nevada on Hwy 95, you come across the strange little semi - abandoned town of Goldfield. I often wonder what people do for a living here because really, there is pretty much nothing around for miles. This spooky town is very close to the infamous and kinda creepy Area 51. Abandoned cars in the streets and yards, abandoned homes, storage containers out in the open, deserted buildings, closed businesses all boarded up...it just seems so weird when you come from a large city environment! We LOVE it though...it's so unique! Just one of the many crazy sights you'll come across exploring the Nevada desert...truly...there is nothing quite like it! ~Kenneth King Bear

Calico is a ghost town and former mining town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. If you live in southern California, and have driven the 15 to Las Vegas, or vice versa, you've been by this exit, and probably wondered, whats with the name? What's down it... A lot of history, and interesting stuff! It's unfortunate, but most of the other videos on YouTube mischaracterize this place. It is not abandoned, it's not spooky or scary, it's beautiful, and has a colorful history. It was once a church, run by a well intentioned man named Curtis Howe Springer, who didn't always play by the rules. He ran a health resort and ministry on this land for decades. Way ahead of his time, he was a proponent of healthy living, health foods, healthy juices, and the like. His radio show reached millions of people all over the world. He took in the downtrodden, and charged whatever they could afford, even if it was nothing. He offered Mineral Baths in his "Healing" waters, Raised rabbits onsite, grew fresh vegetables, tea's, and sold several "Miracle Cures". Curtis even helped save a fish from extinction. The government eventually foreclosed on his mining claims (he wasn't mining, and was more or less here illegally) and evicted him from this place. The property was then given to the Cal State system, and is now the "Desert Studies Center". Many of the original structures are still standing, leaving a testament to a person, who's energy in this world was powerful and surreal... April 6, 2012. I spent an afternoon in Oatman Arizona on historic route 66 (Oatman Hwy) about 28 miles from Kingman AZ. This town was founded a gold mining community in the very early 1900s. Just recently in 2008, the Gold Road Mine in the area was reopened for business, as gold prices are now quite high, making it profitable once again. It seems the town itself is thriving on tourism alone, most of whole Oatman Arizona downtown area is souvenir shops, antique shoppes, restaurants, etc. If you're through this way, off I-40 at Kingman AZ, you might want to take this trip into Oatman AZ. There's a gunfight (actors) in the street a couple times a day, like 12 noon and 2:15pm, something like that. There's a lot of wild donkeys (borros) that roam about town begging for food. There's one place I went into there in Oatman Arizona that I felt for sure is haunted (among other obvious haunted historic places nearby), a very strong presence there. I didn't include it among the video clips here.

Today we explored a California abandoned ghost town located in Californias sequoia national park. The ghost town was saved after nearly being completely destroyed by abandonment. Most of the buildings were transferred here for preservation and now remain mostly abandoned. California Travel Expert Veronica Hill of http://www.CaliforniaTravelExpert.com and the California Essential Guide (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id428163062?mt=8) app visits Julian California in this episode of "California Travel Tips." This charming little ghost town — located an hour from San Diego — comes alive during the fall, when it celebrates the famous Julian apple harvest. Bring along a light jacket as you explore the town's quaint stores, restaurants and delicious homemade apple pies. Julian's mining history dates back to 1869, when San Diego experienced its first (and only) Gold Rush. Today, Main Street is filled with dozens of fun shops and attractions. You can hitch a ride on a horse and buggy, do a bit of wine tasting, or get a Western-style portrait taken at Grandpa's Old Time Photo. To learn more about Julian's mining history, join a tour at Eagle and High Peak Mine, located at the end of C Street. Train rides are available on the Smith Ranch and Julian Railroad by appointment. Kids will enjoy panning for gold at the Julian Mining Company, or getting an old-fashioned phosphate at the Miner's Diner soda fountain. But the real draw in Julian is the apple pie, and visitors are fiercely divided on who makes the best. I'm partial to Julian Pie Company, a cozy little diner with a loyal following. Be sure to get here early, as lines quickly form out the door. Once you've had your fill of pie, walk off the calories with a tour of Julian's pioneer cemetery and historic Gold Rush buildings. The Jacoby Building, built in 1897, was the town's original general store. The Wilcox Building, which dates back to 1872, once served as a stage coach stop and Julian's post office. If you want to spend the night, consider staying in the Julian hotels. The Julian Gold Rush Hotel, which was built in 1897, is one of California's best B&Bs, and well worth a visit. Bodie is a ghost town located about 80 miles from Lake Tahoe, east of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, and about 40 miles north of the Tioga Pass into Yosemite. The town was once a very prosperous gold mining camp, but several fires and eventual downturn resulted in its abandonment. It was designated a historic landmark in 1961 and became known as Bodie State Historic Park in 1962. Presently, Bodie is maintained in a state of arrested decay. During our visit I tried to keep the other patrons out of as many shots as possible, but there are still a few instances where other people can be observed in the background; I don't think this hinders the atmosphere conveyed by the video very much. Everything was shot on the GH2 using primarily the 20mm, with the wider shots coming from the Olympus 9-18mm. The glidetrack hybrid was also used for many of the shots. Slight coloring performed with Mojo and encoded at roughly 24mbps resulting in about a 1gb file.

Some California dreams succeeded, creating megalopolis regions in the state’s north and south. Other dreams failed, leaving nothing but ruins. Founded in 1859, the town of Bellevill, CA in Holcomb Valley, just north of Big Bear Lake, was once home to Southern California's largest Gold rush. After William Holcomb's discovery of Gold in the valley, Bellevill was founded and shortly afterward the population grew to 1500 in the nation's largest county. Bellevill would soon become San Bernardino County's most populated city of the time period. While not much stands of the town today, two of the most significant and well preserved landmarks include the Miner's Cabin and Hangman's Tree, which was said to have hanged many men (as many as four at a time). After each hanging, the branch used to hoist the rope would be cut off to retrieve the body, so you can get a good idea of how many hangings took place on the massive Juniper Tree.

This bizarre, lawless land in the California desert is inhabited by drug addicts, eccentrics, army vets, hippies and just plain old weirdos. Slab City is referred to by its residents as "the last free place in America." enter the title here =============== Between 1964 and 1966 (in Gardena, CA) I built my first Metal Detector (from Popular Mechanics magazine). We moved from Southern California to Nevada City, California in 1971. Nevada City is an old Gold Rush mining town. The main gold mines shut down when the war broke out. Before the mine in Grass Valley was closed, new gold veins were located and then sealed, the mines were then flooded, Now they are trying to a way to drain the mines of the flood water, safely and environmentally because of any contaminates that there might be. I am a retired from Sutter Hospitals at the age of 70, after 30 years. I was in Biomedical Engineering, servicing life support systems. Started making Musical instruments, and back to my old hobby Metal Detecting. I am having a BLAST! ====================================================== A shout out to the following: Hans - Terra Germania Dan Holdworth - Deep Digger Dan Stephen Aukar - The Man with the Hat Digger Dawn and Twig Chill Bill for making me Laugh A big thank you to all of you for Watching Please Subscribe email me at [email protected]
