Katanga Mine: an overview of Glencore’s KCC Mining in Congo, one of our mines in DRC

01:50
Glencore’s Katanga Mine is one of the group’s copper mines in Africa; it’s a major mining operator in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). It operates through two companies, both joint ventures: Kamoto Copper Company (KCC) and DRC Copper and Cobalt Project (DCP). KCC runs the Kamoto project, which includes exploration and mining properties, the Kamoto concentrator, the Luilu metallurgical plant, the Kamoto underground mine and two oxide open pit mines in the Kolwezi district of the DRC. It has capacity to produce 300,000 tonnes of first-class copper cathode each year. The mine in Kolwezi is a high grade copper-cobalt asset that employs over 17,000 people. The area where it’s located is part of the African Copperbelt, one of the world’s most important copper producing regions. Glencore’s investments into mining in this region since 2009, via KCC Kolwezi, are helping to expand copper mining in Congo. This video gives an overview of operations at KCC Mining DRC, including brief interviews with Gustave Nzeng, KCC Chairman; Dodo Nduw, Operations Manager; and Dede Madika, Copper Electrolysis Plant. Special report: Revisiting the cobalt-mining boys

07:58
Sky News has returned to the Democratic Republic of the Congo to try to find two young boys we met previously, who were working in one of the country's many cobalt mines. A charity has offered to educate and care for them. More than half the world's supply of cobalt is in the DRC. It's used extensively in smartphones. Multinational corporations have promised to improve conditions for child miners - but as Sky's special correspondent Alex Crawford found out - there's little evidence of that in the former Katanga Province. Katanga Mining Limited: how Glencore’s KCC mining has supported local entrepreneurs and development

02:06
Glencore mining company Katanga has made significant investments in its mines in Africa, as well as in local development and infrastructure, to support its host regions within the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Since taking over the Katanga mine in 2008, Glencore has invested close to $5 billion in our Congo mining assets; this includes capital funding to address legacy issues that are helping to regenerate the entire DRC mining industry. We have also undertaken local initiatives that support entrepreneurs in cooperatives who stimulate economic growth for local communities, and that develop or rehabilitate local transport and infrastructure. Our support of local business and infrastructure is creating strong foundations for future sustainable growth in the region; we are contributing to tremendous socioeconomic change and development for local people. Our goal is to foster self-sufficiency and to motivate our host communities to take responsibility for their own future, without overdependence on the Katanga Mine or other Congo mining companies. This involves extensive engagement with different stakeholders through formal assessments and ongoing community consultation, to determine and prioritise their needs. Copper Mining Profits Fail Zambians 2011a

07:14
Mopani Copper Mines Mopani Copper Mines Plc (Mopani) is a joint venture company based in Kitwe as 95% of its operations are located there, comprising Glencore International AG (73.1%), First Quantum Minerals Ltd. (16.9%) and Zambian Consolidated Copper Mines Limited (10%). Mopani operates the Mufulira mine, smelter, concentrator and copper refinery and the Nkana mine, concentrator and cobalt plant. MCM produced 134,800 tons of copper and 2,040 tons of cobalt in 2003. MCM is investing in a number of oxide copper projects at several of its properties, including an in-situ leaching project at Mufulira and heap leaching at Nkana, and has achieved significant production increases at its underground mining operations in Kitwe and Mufulira. Copper production from internal sources was supplemented by the purchase of some 18,000 tons of copper in high-grade oxide concentrate bought from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Nkana Mine Nkana mine is one of the largest in Africa, a copper mine located 1 km south-west of Kitwe. The mine is underground as well as open pit and is in operation since 1932 and has produced 6,000,000 tons of copper so far. Its reserves underground include 69,000,000 tons of grading, 16,000,000 tons of copper, and 98,000 tons of cobalt. Its resources include 126,000,000 tons of grading, 43,000,000 tons of copper, and 300,000 tons of cobalt. Copper and cobalt mineralisation occur within the ore shale. Copper mineralisation in the deposits changes from mostly chalcopyrite in the South Orebody, to chalcopyrite-bornite in the Central area and to bornite-chalcopyrite at Mindola. Cobalt occurs as carrollite and cobaltiferous pyrite in approximately equal proportions. The mine produces copper and cobalt from three sources: Mindola Shaft, Central Shaft and South Orebody Shaft. Vertical crater retreat is the predominant mining method while sublevel open-stopping and sublevel caving methods are also used. Other metallurgical facilities, under a management contract by an affiliate of the Anglo American Group, include the Nkana smelter (not owned by Mopani), acid plant (not owned by Mopani) and copper refinery (not owned by Mopani). There is extensive mine tailings around this mine. Nkana Concentrator Nkana Concentrator of Mopani mines, located in Kitwe, treats copper-cobalt sulphide ore using a bulk flotation and segregation flotation flowsheet to produce separate copper and cobalt concentrates. Nkana Concentrator is the most important mineral processing unit of Mopani, as it contributes about 65% of cobalt concentrates treated at the Nkana and Chambeshi Cobalt plants to produce high purity cobalt metal. Konkola Copper Mine Konkola Copper Mine (KCM) is the largest copper mining company in the country. Although based in Chingola, 15% of its operations—namely Nkana Refinery, Nkana Acid Plants and Nkana Smelter (the largest smelter in the nation) -- are located in Kitwe. The Nkana Smelter is the largest primary copper production plant in Zambia. The plant treats concentrates mainly from Nkana, Nchanga, and Konkola mines, which are wholly owned by KCM to produce up to 150,000 tons of new copper. Nkana Smelter The smelter produces high grade anodes, which are electrolytically refined. Sulphur dioxide gas produced by the converters is converted into sulphuric acid which is then used at the Tailings Leach Plant in Nchanga for recovering oxide copper. The smelter also produces discard slag from the reverbs that is rich in cobalt which is stored for future reclamation. This smelter was part of the Konkola Copper Mine's operation at privatisation and has subsequently closed. Nkana Refinery The Nkana Copper Refinery produces electrolytically refined copper in the form of cathodes. The copper meets the LME premium quality grade. The tankhouse has a capacity of about 180,000 tons of finished copper per annum. Nkana Acid Plants There are two single contact sulphuric acid plants at Smelterco, namely the No.3 and No.4 plants. No.3, the largest, is still operational. The plant has a design capacity of 1,050 tons of acid per day. FROM http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mining_in_Zambia

Your Smartphone Was Made By Child Slave Labor - Congo Cobalt Mines

04:06
Your Smartphone Is Powered by Child Labor at Cobalt Mines in Africa. Human rights watchdog Amnesty International has accused several tech and auto industry giants of turning a blind eye to child labor. In a damning report released on Tuesday, the organization found that major brands, including Apple, Samsung, Sony, and Volkswagen, were allowing cobalt mined by children into their products. Cobalt — a metallic element that is found mostly in minerals — is a key component in the lithium-ion rechargeable batteries that power electronic devices such as laptops, smartphones, and electric cars. The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), in central Africa, is the world's top cobalt producer, accounting for more than half of the planet's supply. According to the DRC's government, 20 percent of the cobalt exported by country is extracted from mines in the southern province of Katanga. Much of the cobalt mined in the region is sold to Congo Dongfang Mining International (CDM), a company owned by Chinese mineral company Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt Company Ltd (Huayou Cobalt), which the Amnesty report describes as one of the world's leading manufacturers of cobalt products. According to Amnesty, the components produced by Huayou Cobalt are then sold on to battery manufacturers in China and South Korea, who, in turn, supply some of the world's top electronics companies. A 2014 report by children's rights agency UNICEF found that approximately 40,000 children worked in mines in southern DRC, and that many of them were involved in the mining of cobalt. 'There is lots of dust, it is very easy to catch colds, and we hurt all over.' Amnesty said its report was researched jointly with DRC-based NGO African Resources Watch (Afrewatch). The report is based on interviews of miners working at four sites in the DRC. As part of their investigation, researchers spoke to 17 children, ages 9 to 17. One child said he started working at the mine when he was 7. Most of the children interviewed by Amnesty worked above ground, collecting ore and sorting through rocks, which they then washed in streams and lakes around the mines. The children described working gruelling, 12-hour shifts in the extreme heat or in the rain, often for no more than 1,000 to 2,000 Congolese Francs ($1-$2) per day. Some of them explained that their school day was bookended with shifts at the mine, and that they also worked weekends and during the holidays. Paul, 14, told researchers he also worked underground in the mines, often spending up to 24 hours at a time in unsafe tunnels. "I arrived in the morning and would leave the following morning," he said. Researchers found that the vast majority of workers in the DRC's mines handle cobalt without wearing any protective gear, such as gloves or facemasks, despite the known dangers of chronic exposure to cobalt dust. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has warned that extended exposure to cobalt dust can result in "respiratory sensitization, asthma, shortness of breath," as well as dermatitis and a serious condition known as "hard metal lung disease." Amnesty said the children they interviewed complained of frequent illness. "There is lots of dust, it is very easy to catch colds, and we hurt all over," Dany, a 15-year-old miner, told the watchdog. Amnesty also found that many of the underage miners were malnourished and subjected to "physical abuse, sexual exploitation and violence." Many of the children endured regular beatings at the hands of security guards, who also extorted them for a cut of their earnings. "They asked for money, but we didn't have any... They grabbed my friend and pushed her into a tank containing diesel oil," said Mathy, who told researchers she was 12 at the time of the incident. In a response published as an annex to the report, Apple said that underage labor was "never tolerated in our supply chain and we are proud to have led the industry in pioneering new safeguards." The company said that it was "actively looking for any violations." Microsoft said that it did not "tolerate the use of child, involuntary or forced labor" in its supply chain, but added that it was "unable to say with absolute assurance" whether cobalt in its products could be traced back to ore in the Katanga region. Samsung SDI noted that "up until now, there has been no case of child labor violations reported or detected from Samsung's SDI's plants or suppliers." But like Microsoft, the Korean company also said that it could not determine whether its cobalt supplies originated in Katanga. Farquharson confirms coming cobalt deficit, outlines Formation's mine timeline

07:35
Formation Metals Inc. (TSX: FCO OTCQX: FMETF FWB: FOQ) is a Canadian mineral exploration and mine development company that through its wholly owned subsidiaries has interests in base and precious metals and uranium projects in Canada, United States and Mexico. The company's primary asset, located in the mining friendly state of Idaho, is the 100% owned, fully-permitted Idaho Cobalt Project which is comprised of the mine and mill near Salmon, Idaho, and the proposed Cobalt Production Facility for refining mine concentrate. The mine site is now prepared to commence underground development contingent on successful conclusion of mine financing. As InvestorIntel readers well know, the availability of cobalt for batteries is complicated by the looming shortage of the metal and the competing demand for it. While projections for 2018 show that battery chemicals will require 49% of cobalt output, the metal is also needed for superalloys, hard metals, ceramics and pigments, catalysts, tyres and paint dryers, electroplating, animal feed, synthetic diamonds and other battery technologies. May 5, 2016 – In a special InvestorIntel interview, Publisher Tracy Weslosky speaks with J.Paul Farquharson, President and CEO of Formation Metals Inc. In this interview, Paul outlines: ◾The advances made in metallurgical work ◾How Formation owns the only primary cobalt mine in the Western Hemisphere, and only one of two in the world ◾The timeline to production as a cobalt deficit looms Tracy Weslosky: Paul I rarely have a situation where all my editors and analysts all kind of crowd around me and say you have to follow this story. We have to write more about Formation Metals and you’re certainly an example of this. Last month for instance your stock was up +80% proving that, again, my analysts and editors know what they’re talking about. Can you tell me why your stock did as well as it did? Paul Farquharson: Well, I think Tracy, you know, there’s a lot of different factors there, but we have been, kind of, trying to get the word out lately about the company. We’ve just finished a lot of metallurgical test work. That work is done now so we can prove that we can make a product from our actual ore itself and the Prospectors and Developers Association it happened just a little while ago so we were really out talking about the company and making things happen. Tracy Weslosky: Well, of course, you had a corporate update. This corporate update — I’ve seen a lot of companies put out corporate updates that do not get as good of a response as yours did. You did earlier in March. Of course, the metallurgic studies that you were talking about, I was reading it included a final high purity cobalt salts results. Can you help me understand what this means? Paul Farquharson: Well, the metallurgical work is feasibility level metallurgical work and that’s where we’re heading toward, a feasibility study. What we did, we actually took our own ore from our project in Salmon, Idaho and we delivered it to Hazen Engineering in Denver and Hazen made a concentrate from our ore. Then once you have a concentrate it goes to Cytec. Cytec are the ones that provide us with the reagents. They hit it with the reagents and they make a pregnant leach solution, which once again is our ore. That solution then gets shipped to General Electric because they have the crystallizers and we made an ultrapure cobalt chemical, cobalt sulfate heptahydrate, which is used in the battery industry. It was proof that on a bench test level we could go from our ore to a final ultrapure product. That’s very huge for us and the company. To access this interview, click here. Base Resources PLC to cash in as Ilmenite price rallies

04:45
Ilmenite’s recent price rally is set to continue says Tim Carstens, Base Resources’ chief executive. That is very good news for Base (LON:BSE), which mines ilmenite (and rutile) from its mineral sands operation at Kwale in Kenya. Its principal use is as a pigment and now that stocks of paint in the western hemisphere have been run down, the supply and demand balance is more in the miner's favour. The price of ilmenite has climbed to US$85 per tonne and is set to reach this US$100 by the end of the year and go as high US$150 next year reckons Carstens. That compares with US$65 early in 2016 when the cycle bottomed, but that point has definitely passed he says.

AVZ Minerals bullish on expectations for DRC lithium project

09:21
AVZ Minerals Ltd. (ASX:AVZ) managing director Nigel Ferguson speaks to Proactive Investors about the company’s progress with and high expectations for the lithium-rich LCT (lithium, caesium, tantalum) Manono Project in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Fully-funded diamond core drilling programs, metallurgical testing and mining studies are underway, whilst discussions into strategic investment and offtake agreements continue. Speaking about the Manono Project, Ferguson says, “We've got about 12 kilometres of strike length, we're operating within the Southern sector at the moment... it's 250m - 300m wide, it's about two kilometres long, we've got extensions to that as well…. we hope we will have the first resource calculation out in the late end of June and from there we'll obviously be doing infill drilling to get minable reserves [alongside] engineering studies, with the view to fast tracking things as quickly as we can to get into production."

Metals Investor Forum 2015 - Balmoral Resources Ltd.

10:51
TSX - BAR Darin Wagner, President, CEO & Director of Balmoral Resources, gives a presentation on his company at the 2015 Metals Investor Forum. Balmoral, like its predecessor companies, is focused on the discovery and delineation of high quality (read higher grade, higher potential margin) assets in proven, low political risk mining districts. Balmoral focuses solely in jurisdictions where there is a district premium, rather than a jurisdictional discount to valuation, places where producing companies want to operate. Their team has a strong geological bias to those mining districts which have an extensive history of producing high-margin/profit assets, regions on the low-end of the exploration and development cost spectrum and on the assembly of larger, "district scale" exploration opportunities. Balmoral's current, singular focus is on the Abitibi Greenstone belt in the Canadian province of Quebec.

"We now have unlimited upside" and various options to benefit from the development of the asset, he points out. "Tanzania is where we are concentrating" Frewen added. "It is a much easier place to do business and where the company hopes to develop a low-cost graphite mining project.''

Commodities Sector Report: June 30, 2010

02:53
Jun 30, 2010 -- Oil is trending higher in early morning trade as global equities rise on renewed hopes for Europe as banks sought out less financing from the European Central Bank than expected. Traders will be eyeing the release of the latest weekly crude inventories data by the U.S. Department of Energy, with analysts expecting stockpiles to have decreased. Gold too is gaining momentum as the dollar weakened against the euro, enticing investors to buy on dips as the yellow metal's allure as a safe haven persists. At 0750 ET, Brent crude is up 0.7% at $75.93 a barrel, while light sweet crude is also 0.7% stronger at $76.50 a barrel, and natural gas is 1.3% weaker at $4.49 a million British thermal units. Gold is up 0.2% at $1,244.60 an ounce, while silver is up 0.6% to $18.71 an ounce, and copper is up 1.2% at $2.95 a pound. BP plc (BP) is up over 5% pre-market on the NYSE as the company plans to establish an emergency fund financed by the oil industry to help pay for costs concerning the Gulf of Mexico cleanup, according to the Financial Times. The company has also been the subject of takeover speculation. As for BP's Russian joint venture TNK-BP (TNKBPI), it is looking to borrow up to $1 billion by the end of this year, said its CFO Jonathan Muir. It will not, however, look to issue eurobonds as a source, having already issued a $1 Meanwhile, the joint venture may be a buyer in BP's asset sales, particularly downstream assets in Europe, according to CEO Maxim Barsky. OAO Gazprom (GAZP) said it owed $32 million to Minsk for gas transit through Belarus. The country's First Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Semashko said that Belarus expects to sign an amendment to its contract with Gazprom over gas transit prices on Thursday. In the mining sector, Australia's Gryphon Ltd (GRY) is looking to take over Shield Mining Ltd (SHX) to create a West Africa-focused gold company. Gryphon is offering one of its own shares for every three Shield shares. Gryphon has a 1.1 million ounce project in Burkina Faso, while Shield focuses on mining for gold in Mauritania. Meanwhile, South Africa will maintain its 26% black ownership target for mining companies as announced by Mines Minister Susan Shabangu in a speech. The 2004 Mining Charter requires companies to sell 26% of their South African assets to black investors by 2014 to make amends for apartheid.
