Cat® Highwall Mining - HW300 Features and Benefits
When the conditions are just right - you're hard pressed to find a better coal mining machine than a highwall miner. This video shares the key features and benefits of the Cat® HW300 highwall miner, an amazing piece of machinery that produces a lot of coal while using very few resources in the process.
Surface mining
Surface mining, including strip mining, open-pit mining and mountaintop removal mining, is a broad category of mining in which soil and rock overlying the mineral deposit are removed. It is the opposite of underground mining, in which the overlying rock is left in place, and the mineral removed through shafts or tunnels. Surface mining began in the mid-sixteenth century and is practiced throughout the world, although the majority of surface mining occurs in North America. It gained popularity throughout the 20th century, and is now the predominant form of mining in coal beds such as those in Appalachia and America's Midwest. This video is targeted to blind users. Coal preparation serves several purposes - kefid machinery
Email sales: [email protected] Air pollution control often requires partial removal of pyrites with the ash to reduce the sulfur content of the coal. Ash content often must be controlled to conform to a prescribed quality stipulated in contractual agreements. Because of firing characteristics, it is often as important to retain the ash content at a given level as it is to reduce it. Freight savings are substantial when impurities are removed prior to loading. Finally, the rejected impurities are more easily disposed of at the mine site remote from cities than at the burning site, which is usually in a populated area. Process Instrumentation Instrumentation in the coal preparation plant is relatively simple in comparison with instrumentation at other process industries. The instruments generally found on coal preparation equipment are described below. Belt Conveyor The conveyors are driven by electric motors; the current drawn by the conveyor motors varies directly with the conveyor load. The ammeters located in the control room indicate the instantaneous current drawn by the conveyor motors. When excessive current is indicated, conveyor and equipment loading should be investigated. Some conveyors are also equipped with load meters. These meters indicate the percent of rated load carried by the conveyor at a particular instant. Ammeters and load meters give basically similar indications. Coal Crushers The crusher load is directly proportional to the feed rate and feed sizes. The crusher is driven by an electric motor. The ammeter for the motor is generally located in the central control room. Indication of excessive current should be investigated to determine the cause. Vibrating Screens In addition to the load-current ammeters, the screens may be equipped with pressure gauges indicating the pressure of water to the sprays. The various correct combinations of load current and spray pressure should be established during performance tests for reference during periodic inspections. The increase in load current would mean increased screen loading; this should be matched by increased spray water, which will be indicated by the pressure gauge. Coal Preparation Process Description Foreign materials are introduced into the coal during the mining process, the most common being roof bolts, ties, car wheels, timber, shot wires, and cutting bits. Sulfur in coal occurs as sulfates, organic sulfur, and pyrites (sulfides of iron). The sulfates usually are present in small quantities and are not considered a problem. Organic sulfur is bound molecularly into the coal and is not removable by typical coal preparation processes. Pyrites generally are present in the form of modules or may be more intimately mixed with the coal. Coal preparation plants remove only a portion of the pyritic sulfur; therefore the degree of sulfur reduction depends on the percentage of pyrites in the coal, the degree to which this is intimately mixed with the coal, and the extent of coal preparation. All of the materials described above are combined with the coal to form the vibrating feed. Coal, as referred to above, denotes the portion of the feed that is desired for utilization. As China's largest crushing plant and mill equipments production base, kefid has exported large quantities and high-end mobile crushing plant and milling equipments to Egypt, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Iraq, Jordan, Turkey more than 100 countries and regions, which has made tremendous contributions to the local construction and developments. Bloody Coal
How does mountaintop removal affect the environment? Mountaintop Removal is occurring right at the heart of one of the nations main hotspots of biological diversity. According to the Nature Conservancy, the mountain region including southwest Virginia, southern West Virginia, eastern Kentucky and northeastern Tennessee contains some of the highest levels of biological diversity in the nation. This region is also at the headwaters of the drinking water supplies of many US cities. The maps below show hotspots of biodiversity based on a rarity-weighted index biological diversity produced by the Nature Conservancy, as well as the major river systems with headwaters in the Appalachian coalfields. Unfortunately, there is little information on the cumulative impacts of mountaintop removal because the federal agencies that are charged with regulating coal mining have refused to track the overall extent and impacts of mountaintop removal. The one attempt at acomprehensive analysis of MTR by government agencies was presented in a multi-agency Environmental Impact Statement that was completed in 2003. This effort was initiated in the late 90s, but the focus of the EIS was revised after the White House changed hands in 2001. According to the Charleston Gazette: When it formally kicked off the project in February 1999, the EPA said the goal was to consider developing agency policies to minimize, to the maximum extent practicable the adverse environmental effects of mountaintop removal. By October 2001, then-Deputy Interior Secretary Steven J. Griles, a former mining industry lobbyist, had ordered the project refocused toward centralizing and streamlining coal mine permitting. Cindy Tibbot, a FWS biologist involved in the EIS process, was one of many agency scientists who expressed outrage about Griles directive, stating in an internal memo: Its hard to stay quiet about this when I really believe were doing the public and the heart of the Clean Water Act a great disservice. As Tibbot put it, the only alternatives offered in Griles proposed EIS would be: alternative locations to house the rubber stamp that issues the [mining] permits. While the EIS did compile a lot of disparate information on the effects and extent of MTR, the analysis was based on mining permit maps. According to satellite analysis done by Michael Shank at the TAGIS center of the West Virginia DEP, however, those permit maps are underestimating the extent of valley fill in 6 West Virginia coal counties by about 40%. Thus, the entire EIS is based on verifiably faulty data. Despite its many flaws, however, the multi-agency environmental impact statement did provide some useful information on the extent and impacts of mountaintop removal. Here are some of the impacts and concerns expressed in the final EPA report: More than 7 percent of Appalachian forests have been cut down and more than 1,200 miles of streams across the region have been buried or polluted between 1985 and 2001. Over 1000 miles of streams have been permitted to be buried in valley fills. (for scale, this is a greater distance than the length of the entire Ohio River). Mountaintop removal mining, if it continues unabated, will cause a projected loss of more than 1.4 million acres by the end of the decade-an area the size of Delaware-with a concomitant severe impact on fish, wildlife, and bird species, not to mention a devastating effect on many neighboring communities. 800+ square miles of mountains are estimated to be already destroyed. (this is equal to a one-quarter mile wide swath of destruction from New York to San Francisco - it is also significantly underestimated). Other quotes from the 2003 report include: … studies found that the natural return of forests to mountaintop mines reclaimed with grasses under hay and pasture or wildlife post-mining land uses occurs very slowly. Full reforestation across a large mine site in such cases may not occur for hundreds of years. Because it is difficult to intercept groundwater flow, it is difficult to reconstruct free flowing streams at mountaintop removal sites. Stream chemistry monitoring efforts show significant increases in conductivity, hardness, sulfate, and selenium concentrations downstream of [mountaintop removal] operations. http://www.ilovemountains.org

Blood For Money
An exclusive track I wrote and recorded for the Music for the Mountains compilation. Music For The Mountains features 20 tracks of material either written specifically for this effort or tracks not available on any other album by artists from Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, and Alabama. The project was spearheaded by Mark Utley of Magnolia Mountain and proceeds from it's sale will go to the Ohio Citizen Action and Kentuckians For The Commonwealth to fight against Mountaintop Removal. A practice where explosives are used to blast the tops off of mountains so that coal companies can more easily access strips of coal with the excess rock and soil laden with toxic mining byproducts being dumped into nearby valleys, in what are called "holler fills" or "valley fills" where pollutants eventually seep into the ground water supplies. To date more than 500 Appalachian mountains have been dynamited and nearly 2,000 miles of rivers and streams have been choked in the process. The compilation is available from the fine gentlemen at This Is American Music. http://thisisamericanmusic.com/product.php?id_product=53 http://ohiocitizen.org/ http://www.kftc.org/

W.Va. Senator drinks bottle of coal slurry
A West Virginia state Senator made a statement about the quality of his constituents drinking water by drinking a bottle of what he called coal slurry on the Senate floor. WASZ reported: Senator Randy White (D-Webster) introduced a bill on the senate floor that limits coal slurry sites from making changes to their permits until the Department of Environmental Protection releases its findings on whether the ground water in these areas is safe to drink. Right now, there are 15 active coal slurry sights, according to White. This is where coal companies can inject coal slurry, the liquid and solid waste left over from the mining and preparation process, in abandoned underground mines. White says he drank the 12 ounces of liquid Thursday to make a statement. The senator tells WSAZ.com he wants other lawmakers to realize there are health concerns when it comes to drinking coal slurry water. He says lawmakers are elected to protect their constituents health and they need to be held accountable to make sure theyre doing just that. This video is from WSAZ, broadcast Mar. 12, 2009. Isaiah 50:10-11 Divine Darkness Versus Human Light - Nitro Pill
There is hope for those that fear the Lord and are walking in darkness; the darkness has a purpose. Darkness is a fact in our walk of faith, and some things can only be seen in the dark. God can use it for discipline, but it can also be a sign of spiritual despondency. You can still glorify God in the dark if you recognize the darkness has not separated you from Him. Trust God when you cannot see, and He will bring you through. Pastor Melissa Scott teaches from Faith Center in Glendale, CA. Isaiah 50 King James Version 1 Thus saith the Lord, Where is the bill of your mother's divorcement, whom I have put away? or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you? Behold, for your iniquities have ye sold yourselves, and for your transgressions is your mother put away. 2 Wherefore, when I came, was there no man? when I called, was there none to answer? Is my hand shortened at all, that it cannot redeem? or have I no power to deliver? behold, at my rebuke I dry up the sea, I make the rivers a wilderness: their fish stinketh, because there is no water, and dieth for thirst. 3 I clothe the heavens with blackness, and I make sackcloth their covering. 4 The Lord God hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned. 5 The Lord God hath opened mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back. 6 I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting. 7 For the Lord God will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed. 8 He is near that justifieth me; who will contend with me? let us stand together: who is mine adversary? let him come near to me. 9 Behold, the Lord God will help me; who is he that shall condemn me? lo, they all shall wax old as a garment; the moth shall eat them up. 10 Who is among you that feareth the Lord, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the Lord, and stay upon his God. 11 Behold, all ye that kindle a fire, that compass yourselves about with sparks: walk in the light of your fire, and in the sparks that ye have kindled. This shall ye have of mine hand; ye shall lie down in sorrow.

The Principle of Longwall Top Coal Caving (LTCC) - Chinese
Peabody Energy Largest Coal Company Declares Bankruptcy
The world’s largest private-sector coal company, Peabody Energy, has filed for bankruptcy. The bankruptcy marks the fourth of major U.S. coal company in the last year. The natural gas boom and dropping prices for renewables have hit the fossil fuel sector hard. Adding to coal’s woes are aggressive anti-coal organizing by climate activists and Obama’s pending Clean Power Plan. In a statement, the company said that with the Chapter 11 filing, it intends to reduce its debt level, improve its cash flow, and “position the company for long-term success, while continuing to operate under the protection of the court process.” ►Circle us on Google + http://goo.gl/TXeBfX ►Subscribe Channel http://goo.gl/mqt0wI ►Don't forget to Like * Comment * Share this video. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Stay tuned, Stay connected

Waratah Rivulet - Longwall Damage in Sydney Drinking Water Catchments
The Waratah Rivulet flows into the Woronora Dam and makes up about 29% of its catchment. Underneath is longwall mining which is cracking river bedrock and causing water loss and pollution as ecotoxic chemicals are leached from the fractured rocks. In addition there are frequent rockfalls along mined river gorges. In 2005 the NSW Scientific Committee declared longwall mining to be a key threatening process. The Waratah Rivulet was listed in the declaration along with several other rivers and creeks as being damaged by mining. No threat abatement plan was ever completed and today there are 8 underground coal mines in operation in Sydney Drinking Water Catchments. NSW Premier O'Farrell is under pressure to create no go zones for mining in drinking water catchments but has not yet (July 2013) http://www.australiancoalalliance.com/waratah_rivulet.htm

Ecological Resiliency: Is It a Meaningful Concept for Reclamation Regulation?
Brett Purdy with Alberta Innovates reviews the current regulatory reclamation policy for oils sands projects. He points out that recently released Best Management Practice guides now cover three purposes, planning, operations and now monitoring. He points out that Steam Assisted Gravity systems will have a different process and timeline to reclamation than the open pit oil sands mines. So expectations for reclamation objectives will have to be different. Resiliency might involve looking factors that we anticipate will change over time. This will involve establishing targets based on natural systems. Brett Purdy is a reclamation research specialist and Director of Restoration Ecology and Ecosystem Management, Alberta Innovates, Energy and Environment Solutions.

Save Our Streams video
The Save Our Streams promo video is a short reminder about the importance of your participation in protecting our water quality. The clean stream in the video is the beautiful Pickle Springs Natural Area in Ste. Genevieve County, Missouri. It is a free flowing, clean, Ozark stream. The polluted stream in the video is Deer Creek, a suburban St. Louis stream that is a major tributary in the River Des Peres watershed that drains most of the St. Louis metropolitan region. Jim Karpowicz of the Documentary Group from Columbia, Missouri and Tom Newcomb, of Technisonic filmed the video in high definition so that it would be compatible with large screen presentation and new high-def television. Randy Skylock with Technisonic edited the video. Mike Radentz did the amazing soundtrack. Clyde Ruffins provided the voice talent. We hope that you are inspired to join us in improving and protecting our Missouri creeks. Please learn more about the ways you can get involved at http://sos.moenviron.org/.

The Diamond Empire
This astonishing documentary investigates how an advertising slogan invented by Madison Avenue executives in 1948 has come to define our most intimate and romantic rituals and ideals. The Diamond Empire, which sent shockwaves through the transnational diamond industry when it first appeared, systematically takes apart the myth that "diamonds are forever." It exposes how one white South African family, through a process of monopoly and fantasy, managed to exert control over the global flow of diamonds and change the very way we think about courtship, marriage, and love — an achievement all the more stunning given that diamonds are in fact neither scarce nor imperishable. Zeroing in on how "the diamond empire" managed to convert something valueless into one of the most coveted commodities in history, the film provides a riveting look at how marketing and consumer culture shape not only global trade and economics, but also our very identities. MEF is delighted to be able to make this powerful educational resource available to teachers once again. A film by producer and senior journalist Janine Roberts, author of Glitter & Greed: The Secret World of the Diamond Cartel. (1994) 102 minutes

Impacts can result in erosion, sinkholes, loss of biodiversity, or the contamination of soil, groundwater, and surface water by the chemicals emitted from mining processes. These processes also have an impact on the atmosphere from the emissions of carbon which have effect on the quality of human health and biodiversity. Some mining methods may have such significant environmental and public health effects that mining companies in some countries are required to follow not so strict environmental and rehabilitation codes to ensure that the mined area returns to its original state.

Silicon Palms presents Wild Orchid Brazil
Happy Birthday Canada! We stand on guard for thee.... here in Brazil (that is), as I will always love Canada but prefer living in Brazil. Please allow me to introduce Silicon Palms my original YouTube Channel and online identity since 1999. Silicon Palms is now working on something unique that I'd like to share with you. Over a year ago, I was presented with an opportunity to design a resilient community project for a magnificent mountaintop property, on an organic farm in Aguas Mornas, Santa Catarina. That's in the rain forest (Floresta Atlantica) of Southern Brazil (with a view of Florianopolis and the Sea). The property owner and I devised a strategy to focus on "Sustainable Forestry" for the revenue, to develop the project, simply because it's the best use of the land but we stumbled upon an idea for disruptive innovation in the marketing. The idea is to take the best thing about the rainforest, use digital media methods to monetize it into online content, and social activism to bring it to life as an organization. The Plan is called Wild Orchid Brazil - Here's the Orchid Idea Pitch A Canadian Expat connected with a USA Expat, both were living in Brazil for over a dozen years each and never previously met. Together they devised a plan so truly compelling that anyone that heard the pitch would immediately endorse the orchid idea and at the very least give a recommendation to every single friend and family, without thinking twice about it. The 2 Expats spent a year brainstorming and test pitching the orchid idea with big thinkers. It had to be sustainable revenue generated from the 10 acre property and embrace Social Activism for Environmental Protection and research into sustainable forestry projects. Amongst which is the conservation of Wild Orchid, which inhabit the property in healthy numbers. The orchid ides started flowing, which gave rise to the concept of "Orchid Porn" for Social Media (Facebook friendly) to fight the natural enemy of all flowers - Chemtrail spraying (aka Solar Radiation Management). We are now building our launch team for crowd source funding, the proceeds of which will be used for Grant Writing. • Sustainable forestry in Brazil is our Plan • The Wild Orchid is our Meme • Social Activism is our Method • Save the Rainforest is our Message • Champion the Wild Orchid Mission. Promote the wild orchid as a Super Hero of air quality and the canary in the coal mine for planet earth. We need your help! Please join our campaign. Your name amongst our members makes a big difference. Since our goal is to reach 1 million members within 1 year but we need your help to tell other people. We want you to love the Wild Orchid Project, so you'll gladly tell all your friends. Our hope is that you'll add your energy into helping us grow the most unique resilient community on the Internet. You could own your own wild orchid in Brazil, with 24/7 web cam and dedicated web page (Facebook friendly), containing the Google Earth link co-ordinates, or visit the research facility as a special guest. Wild Orchid Brazil is a place and project like none other and membership has privilege. Open Source systems enable collaboration, management and reporting to the community. The orchid idea is pure innovation in the world of environmental protection projects. Please join http://wildorchid.info/
