Intro to the Draft Site-Wide Environmental Impact Statement

03:56
***PLEASE NOTE: The comment period for the Draft Site-Wide Environmental Impact Statement has been extended through December 2, 2011*** The Draft Site-Wide Environmental Impact Statement (SWEIS) for the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) and Off-Site Locations in Nevada is available for public review and comment through October 27, 2011. Within the draft SWEIS, the U.S. Department of Energy, National Security Administration Nevada Site Office presents a formal analysis of how current and potential missions at the NNSS (formerly the Nevada Test Site) and related off-site locations may affect the environment over the next ten years. As required by federal regulations, the document's analysis must consider several reasonable alternatives. The draft SWEIS explores the environmental implications of three alternatives: • The No Action Alternative reflects activity levels remaining consistent with current levels; • The Expanded Operations Alternative includes activity levels consistent with the No Action Alternative, while considering additional proposed activities and increased frequency of ongoing activities; • The Reduced Operations Alternative reflects activity levels being reduced. Activity reductions would vary across programs. Each alternative discusses potential impacts, including those that may affect nearby communities. Public input, therefore, plays an important role in crafting the final document, which is anticipated in mid-2012. The draft document can be accessed online at www.nv.energy.gov/sweis, or by calling 877-781-6105. Public comments can be provided via the website, by calling 877-781-6105, faxing 702-295-5300, or by U.S. Mail at P.O. Box 98518, Las Vegas, NV 89193-8518 (attention: NNSS SWEIS Document Manager). Community members also have the option of submitting comments during public hearings being held September 20-22, 2011, in Las Vegas, Pahrump, and St. George, and September 27-28, 2011, in Tonopah and Carson City, respectively. Each hearing will include an open house (5-8pm), where subject matter experts will provide information and answer questions regarding the draft SWEIS. The public may provide comments during the formal public hearing (6:30-8pm) portion, or privately to a stenographer during the open house. Please call 877-781-6105 or visit www.nv.energy.gov/sweis for information.

The Battle Raging In Nigeria Over Control Of Oil | VICE on HBO

14:38
Nigeria may sit atop one of the largest oil reserves in the world, but the majority of the Nigerian people have seen little benefit from the multibillion-dollar industry. The government and global energy companies have been exploiting the resource for years, bringing poverty, pollution, and violence to the Niger Delta. And now the local militias fighting for oil control have made conditions even worse. Caught in the conflict are Nigerian citizens involved in the illegal oil market simply for survival. Oil theft is rampant, and the booming black market has transnational oil and gas consultants concerned about the effects on global oil markets. The government isn't too happy about it either. “All the oil that is sold around here, the government calls illegally refined products,” local oil businessman Don Wizaro told VICE News. And when the Nigerian military raids illegal oil operations, they slash containers, releasing oil into waterways, contaminating what the main source of fishing, agriculture, and drinking water. As the government continues its assault on illegal refineries and barges carrying stolen oil, local militias are retaliating. And one of the most notorious militias is the Niger Delta Avengers. They attack pipelines and infrastructure, significantly affecting both the environment and the economy. VICE correspondent Gianna Toboni heads to the heart of Nigeria's oil production to witness firsthand the fight over the control of oil in the Niger Delta. His distinct and lively Haida Manga style engages perfectly with this inspirational story that encourages every individual to act on behalf of the worlds limited and precious resources. http://mny.ca/ Athlii Gwaii: The Line at Lyell (46:30 min.) 2003 Part of the Ravens and Eagles: Haida Art series Jeff Bear/Marianne Jones, Ravens and Eagles Productions In the fall of 1985, a small but resolute troupe of Haida elders journeyed by helicopter to Athlii Gwaii (Lyell Island) to join their young counterparts in a stand against clearcutting. Industrial invasion in the remote archipelago had gone too far. Ancient cedar giants and rare spruce trees—lifeblood of Haida art and culture—had been leveled indiscriminately for too long. Buoyed by their courageous Haida elders, protesters united in peaceful resistance. Mass Effect: Andromeda - Gameplay Walkthrough - (4K) Part 9 "The Secret Project"

44:43
Mass Effect: Andromeda - Gameplay Walkthrough - (4K) Part 9 "The Secret Project" Mass Effect: Andromeda is an action role-playing game in which the player takes control of either Scott or Sara Ryder from a third-person perspective. Both Ryders' appearances and first names can be determined by the player. The appearance of their father, Alec, is automatically adjusted based on how the Ryder twins look. Upon beating the game, a New Game+ is unlocked, which allows the player to restart the game with certain bonuses and switch to using the other Ryder, if interested. Players can also choose to continue playing with their existing character and complete unfinished missions. Unlike previous installments in the Mass Effect series, where players begin each new game by choosing from six different character classes that each have their own unique set of skills, players instead have free rein to assign any skills that they want and build towards a specialty over the course of the game. For example, if the player chooses to invest solely in biotic skills, Ryder will unlock the Adept profile, which results in bonuses related to that play style. Experience points for spending on skills are earned by completing missions, and there is no cap on the number of points that can be earned. Points assigned to each skill can be constantly reallocated so that players can experiment with multiple gameplay approaches without having to restart their games and build up their skills from scratch again. In Mass Effect: Andromeda, the player explores the Andromeda galaxy by selecting destinations from the inside of a ship called Tempest. By having Ryder stand on the ship's bridge, the player is able to overlook the stars using a galaxy map and seamlessly choose a navigation point. Over a dozen planets have hub worlds that connect the player to various quests that need to be completed, such as taking out hostile enemy bases or hideouts, scanning for objects with useful data, or completing loyalty missions for Ryder's squadmates. As quests are completed, the player earns "Andromeda Viability Points", which allow for certain upgrades, and planets increase their "Viability Levels", which allow for the building of outposts.[ Each planet has a boss that the player may not be able to defeat at first and may need to revisit later once Ryder has sufficiently leveled up. Planets have open world elements and can be traversed using the Nomad, a six-wheeled, all-terrain vehicle. While driving the Nomad, the player has the ability to scan the planet's terrain for resources and then deploy mining drones to collect them.[16] As new areas are explored, the player can find drop zones that serve as fast-travel points and allow for a loadout change.[ Some planets have environmental hazards that must be accounted for, such as the planet Elaaden, where Ryder must avoid the heat to prevent taking damage.[ Over the course of the game, the player can find blueprints and resources that are used for crafting weapons and armor. Some crafted weapons can be given customized names. The Story of Asbestos 1921 US Bureau of Mines and Johns Manville Corporation

32:20
This silent film was produced by the US Bureau of Mines with the assistance of the Johns-Manville Company, one of the many industrial films made by the Bureau in cooperation with industry. The film shows the operation of mines and factories of Johns-Manville. Asbestos is first mined as rock and fiber at Chrysotile, Wyoming and Quebec, Canada. It is then sorted and sent to factories at Manville, New Jersey and Waukegan, Illinois, where it is crushed, mixed, and carded. Asbestos is made into brake linings, tubing, rubber cement, pipe insulation, and roofing. Finally the film shows how magnesia is used with asbestos. And ends with how roofing is tested and applied and how asbestos shingles are manufactured. Johns-Manville was founded in 1858 as the H. W. Johns Manufacturing Company of New York, N. Y. and was based on the principle uses of asbestos as fire resistant roofing material. In 1886 the inception of the Manville Covering Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin was founded on the principle uses of asbestos as a heat insulating material. In 1901 H. W. Johns Manufacturing Company and Manville Pipe Covering Company merged to form H. W. Johns-Manville Company of New York, N. Y. The company was reincorporated as Johns-Manville Corporation in 1926. Between 1900 and the mid 1980s, asbestos was used in over 3,000 different products. During the 20th century, more than 30 million tons of asbestos were used in industrial facilities, homes, schools, shipyards, steel mills, power plants and commercial buildings in the United States. Asbestos is term used to describe six naturally occurring minerals with similar properties. In the simplest of terms, asbestos is a rock mined from the ground. Asbestos has several key physical properties, including its durability and resistance to heat and combustion. It is also fibrous in nature, which allows it to be spun and woven into cloth. Most chemicals do not affects asbestos, and it is also does not conduct electricity well. Asbestos is an extremely fibrous mineral and mining, milling, processing, or use of asbestos and its products create many small fibers. Because of their thin shape and small size, the asbestos fibers easily pass through the body's natural defenses designed to trap debris within the respiratory systems before reaching the lungs. Once inside the lungs, the asbestos fibers slice into the sensitive tissue causing irritation and scarring. Because asbestos fibers are so durable, the body is not able to break them down to remove them. Once in place, the fibers continue to generate scar tissue, progressively damaging the lungs; extensive scarring can lead to the development of asbestosis. Asbestos may also cause the development of mesothelioma or lung cancer. Under the authority of the Clean Air Act, the US EPA banned the use of most spray-applied surfacing used for fireproofing, insulation and decorative purposes and thermal system insulation for wet-applied and preformed asbestos pipe insulation and preformed asbestos block insulation on boiler and hot water tanks. For current information, contact ADAO - Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization - an independent organization founded by Linda Reinstein and Doug Larkin in 2004. ADAO seeks to give asbestos victims and concerned citizens a united voice to raise public awareness about the dangers of asbestos exposure. ADAO is an independent global organization dedicated to preventing asbestos-related diseases through education, advocacy and community. ADAO's mission includes supporting global advocacy and advancing asbestos awareness, prevention, early detection, treatment, and resources for asbestos-related disease. For more information go to www.asbestosdiseaseawareness.org. In the past, asbestos—now known to cause cancer in humans—was used extensively in walls and ceilings and to cover pipes, boilers, and various industrial equipment. Because of this danger, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulations require that asbestos be removed before a building undergoes major renovations or is demolished. When asbestos is present, specially trained workers must remove it before insulation workers can install the new insulating materials.

Mass Effect: Andromeda - Gameplay Walkthrough - (4K) Part 11 "More Romancing"

51:37
Mass Effect: Andromeda - Gameplay Walkthrough - (4K) Part 11 "More Romancing" Mass Effect: Andromeda is an action role-playing game in which the player takes control of either Scott or Sara Ryder from a third-person perspective. Decolonizing Language Revitalization

01:56:24
September 25, 2013 - How has Eurocentric anthropology and linguistics affected the way we interpret our elders and ancestors who share their cultural knowledge with foreign researchers? Join us for a presentation with Khelsilem Rivers and April Charlo, indigenous peoples from community-based and cultural revitalization backgrounds, who will be discussing decolonization of language revitalization. Their presentation and open dialogue will address the context of rapid language loss and decline, and how colonization has affected or is embedded in the strategies of revitalization. In an effort to revitalize Indigenous languages, communities may have unknowingly adopted or assimilated colonized ways of thinking as they invest interest and attempt to repair or restore ties to culture and language. Are we learning to speak Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Nēhiyawēwin, Kanien'kéha, et all with an English-mind or are we learning to speak Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Nēhiyawēwin, Kanien'kéha with a Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Nēhiyaw, Kanien'keháka mind? Indigenous languages represent one of the darkest ways in which ethnocide and cultural genocide have occurred. It is expected in the next twenty-five years over 700 of the worlds Indigenous languages will be forgotten. In the Vancouver area alone, the two Indigenous languages are considered critical endangered; Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) language has five to seven fluent speakers and hən̓q̓əmin̓əm has one fluent speaker left. Decolonizing Language Revitalization aims to put forward perspectives of shifting values, cultural understandings, and impacts on community. It is the stories we tell ourselves (as a people) that impacts who we believe we are, and then who we become. But if the stories -- even including, or especially the Indigenous ones -- are filtered through colonialism, we have become a different people because of it. April Charlo from Bitterroot Salish people and is a member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, Montana. Khelsilem Rivers is a Sḵwx̱wú7mesh-Kwakwa̱ka̱'wakw language revitalization activist from Vancouver. Save Kipawa Lake

02:56
Kipawa Lake is at risk and worth saving! Please visit www.kipawalakepreservationsociety.ca to learn how you can help. The mission of the Kipawa Lake Preservation Society is to preserve the Kipawa watershed as it is, environmentally healthy and unpolluted, through constant dialogue, education and protective initiatives that involve the local population, general public, government officials and corporations directly or indirectly related to the Kipawa watershed. As a group of concerned citizens, our goal is to bring the attention of the local, provincial and federal governments to the issues that endanger the environmental health and future of the Kipawa watershed. Currently a major issue is the mining exploration and proposed rare earth mine. In addition to the threats posed by all open pit mining operations, rare earth mining poses unique risks and has never been carried out in a safe manner.

Laura Lark: "Mission to Mars" | Talks at Google

55:30
Former NYC Googler, Laura Lark, served as one of six crew members participating in the fifth HI-SEAS (Hawai'i Space Exploration Analog and Simulation) mission, a research designed to study human behavior and performance, helping NASA determine the individual and team requirements for long-duration space exploration missions—including travel to Mars. Lark lived for eight months as an astronaut, only stepping outside of the HI-SEAS habitat to carry out geological research wearing a mock space suit. "My technical background has already been useful in stabilizing our communications systems with Mission Support, but the other skills I picked up as a member of teams at Google and before may prove equally useful: how to troubleshoot, creative problem-solving, how to work with a large team (especially one dispersed geographically) to accomplish something very complex."

WUS2015 Community & uranium mining issues in Africa

56:16
PEER DE RIJK (NETHERLANDS) International executive director, World Information Service on Energy (WISE) BRUNO CHAREYRON (FRANCE) Nuclear physic engineer, director of the CRIIRAD laboratory MAMADOU DIALLO (MALI) Member of the Association of Citizens and Friends of Faléa Commune (ARACF) DAVID BAYANG (CAMEROON ) Deputy National Coordinator, National Service for Justice and Peace THE SYMPOSIUM The World Uranium Symposium addressed issues arising from the nuclear fuel chain, from mining uranium to its end-uses and byproducts for civilian or military purposes. Both scientific and community-based, the Symposium was organized around the following themes: health, environment, economy, ethics, governance, human rights and the rights of indigenous peoples. Open to the public, the symposium had hosted more than 300 people per day from 14 to 16 April 2015, and had included local, national and international representatives from the sectors of health, research, industry, education, civil society, policy makers and indigenous communities. local, national and/or international media were present. All presentations of the symposium will be posted in electronic formats (text and / or videos) after the Symposium, in French and / or English. • April 14 (Day 1): Uranium mines and the nuclear life cycle : health and environmental issues • April 15 (Day 2): Civil and military nuclear : ethics, economics and political issues • April 16 (Day 3): Human rights, indigenous peoples' rights and governance issues ORGANIZATIONS INVOLVED The Symposium is jointly organized by Physicians for Global Survival (1985 Nobel Peace Prize), the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, Nature Québec, the Canadian Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility and the Coalition pour que le Québec ait meilleure mine. It also receives support from the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (Swiss chapter), the First Nations of Quebec and Labrador Sustainable Development Institute, the Cree Nation of Mistissini, MiningWatch Canada, and a number of other local, national and international partners. CONTEXT The Symposium is occurring at a time when many organizations and governments question the future of nuclear power, currently providing about 11% of the world’s electricity. The year 2015 also marks the seventieth anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the corresponding United Nations negotiations of the Non Proliferation Treaty for the prevention and the abolition of nuclear arms. It will also see the tabling on a new UN treaty on climate change. Canada is one of the largest producers and exporters of uranium worldwide, yet its nuclear energy output is in relative decline. Only two provinces still operate nuclear reactors: Ontario and New Brunswick. While uranium has been primarily mined from Saskatchewan, the provinces of British Columbia and Nova Scotia have officially banned uranium mining. Quebec recently shut down its sole nuclear reactor and has tasked the Bureau d’audiences publiques sur l’environnement (BAPE) with conducting an investigation on issues related to uranium mining. It is expected to release its report by May 20 2015. The Symposium aims to tackle these different issues and to provide recommendations to decision makers to better ensure protection for the human health, global security and a safe environment

Mass Effect: Andromeda - Gameplay Walkthrough - (4K) Part 12 "Nexus Missions"

42:47
Mass Effect: Andromeda - Gameplay Walkthrough - (4K) Part 12 "Nexus Missions" Mass Effect: Andromeda is an action role-playing game in which the player takes control of either Scott or Sara Ryder from a third-person perspective. The River of Healing

33:08
On December 4, 2012, the Union of Ontario Indians HIV/AIDS program will launch a new video called "The River of Healing." The Union of Ontario Indians HIV/AIDS program coordinator Jody Cotter produced the video that focuses on harm reduction in drug use. "We focus on positive solutions such as youth prevention programs and strategies that help educate our people on the prevention of transmittable diseases such as Hepatitis C and HIV through unsafe drug use," says Cotter. "The video emphasizes the positive effects, such as healing, that can be brought about through effective methods of harm reduction. The aim of this video is to reduce the stigma and discrimination associated with drug use in our communities." The video launch is in conjunction with the HIV/AIDS "Little Spirit Moon" conference held December 4-5 in Toronto. Produced by The Union of Ontario Indians HIV/AIDS program in collaboration with Regan Pictures, The River of Healing features the participation of the Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network, the Ontario Aboriginal HIV/ AIDS Strategy, Nurture North, the AIDS Committee of North Bay and Area, and others impacted by HIV/AIDS. Funding for The River of Healing was provided by Health Canada and the Ontario Ministry of Health AIDS Bureau. Conspiracy Theory : Did We Land on the Moon ?. (FULL) (February 2001)

47:01
This episode of a FOX TV show titled *Conspiracy Theory* was aired on February 2001. The "Appolo 11 Mission" allegedly landed the first humans on the Earth's Moon on July 20th, 1969, at 20:17:39 UTC. This video is present on youtube in 5 different parts. I just concatenated them, appended a short clip of the begining of the "Appolo 11 Mission" press conference and uploaded the whole thing. Thank you to the original uploader. At 43:38, are the 3 dudes who went to the moon, took some photo souvenir and came back to earth, in 8 days. Those are the few first minutes of the press conference given after their return from where no man has gone before. Photo souvenir on the moon : : http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/98/Aldrin_Apollo_11_original.jpg _ Related Video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yo5w0pm24ic =============== This video was aired by FOX TV on February 2001. The following month (March 04th, 2001), the short conspiracy movie (The Lone Gunmen) below was also aired on FOX TV : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3WW6eoLcLI In the context of September 11th 2001, when 2 high rise buildings crumble at near free-fall speed, those were just media coincidences of year 2001 or was it predictive programming (ie : "Subtle form of psychological conditioning provided by the media to acquaint the public with planned societal changes to be implemented by the leaders. If and when these changes are put through, the public will already be familiarized with them and will accept them as 'natural progressions'; thus lessening any possible public resistance and commotion") ?.

Burning the Future: Coal in America - Trailer

02:01
Available from: http://www.videoproject.com/bur-974-d.html Every eleven and one-half days, the explosive equivalent of the Hiroshima atomic bomb is unleashed upon the mountains of southern West Virginia and eastern Kentucky - for coal. Burning the Future: Coal in America challenges the notion of clean coal, documenting the devastating ecological, social and health impact of coal mining and mountain-top removal. The film follows the explosive forces that have set in motion a groundswell of conflict between the coal industry and residents of West Virginia, where over 1.4 million acres of mountains have been destroyed and groundwater polluted. Confronted by a US energy policy that favors coal without sufficient regard for the negative impact its extraction causes, local activists organize to arouse the nation and help protect their health, their communities and their way of life. Featuring both coal and mining advocates as well as opponents, this is the preeminent film on the coal controversy. The DVD package includes considerable supplemental material: short films, printed information, web resources and discussion questions, perfect for courses on energy, the environment, social movements and related issues.
