Road to Nowhere

01:08
In the 1930s and 1940s, Swain County gave up the majority of its private land to the Federal Government for the creation of Fontana Lake and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Hundreds of people were forced to leave the small Smoky Mountain communities that had been their homes for generations. With the creation of the Park, their homes were gone, and so was the road to those communities. Old Highway 288 was buried beneath the deep waters of Fontana Lake. The Federal government promised to replace Highway 288 with a new road. Lakeview Drive was to have stretched along the north shore of Fontana Lake, from Bryson City to Fontana, 30 miles to the west. And, of special importance to those displaced residents, it was to have provided access to the old family cemeteries where generations of ancestors. But Lakeview Drive fell victim to an environmental issue and construction was stopped, with the road ending at a tunnel, about six miles into the park. The environmental issue was eventually resolved, but the roadwork was never resumed. And Swain County's citizens gave the unfinished Lakeview Drive its popular, albeit unofficial name "The Road To Nowhere." On weekends throughout the summer, the Park Service still ferries groups of Swain County residents across Fontana Lake to visit their old family cemetaries for Decoration Days and family reunions. The legal issue of whether to build the road was finally reolved in February, 2010 when the US Department of Interior signed a settlement agreement paying Swain County $52 million in lieu of building the road. Congressman Heath Shuler, a Bryson City naitve, was the driving force in bringing the settlement to fruition.

Our Smoky Mountain Adventure

00:54
For Spring Break 2012, the Brown family decided to tour the Nantahala National Forest in the Great Smoky Mountains. In this annual camping adventure, we made S'mores by the campfire at Moonshine Creek Campgrounds. Whitewater rafting down the Nantahala Gorge through Endless River Adventures was incredible (and cold). The most affordable horseback riding was at Nantahala Village Riding Stables. And the kids loved gem mining at the Old Mill Mining Company.

I had a call for a ring recovery from a lady who had lost her wedding rings at a local gas station. I wasn't too hopeful, knowing that recoveries on a concrete surface are tricky. Well this one turned out good for a change. Hopefully this is one thing she won't have to stress out over during the Christmas season. Merry Christmas everybody!

Our reputation is in the reviews that our guests have given us. We want you to have the best experience you can when you come to North Carlina for your vacation. Hidden Gem is located 5 miles from the GA/NC state line on HWY 441. It is 9 miles from Franklin. As you drive up the paved road to the top of the mountain you will see Hidden Gem. From the large wrap around deck you have a wonderful view of a mountain vista with layers of mountains. Inside, the stone gas fireplace provides a warm center for the large vaulted living room. There is a wall of windows looking out over the view. There are 2 bedrooms with king beds, 1 bedroom with a queen bed and i bedroom with 2 twin beds. In addition there is a game room with a sleeper sofa. You can relax in front of one of the two HD TV's ( 46 inch LCD with satellite), play a game of pool, or soak in the hot tub in a separate room which looks out on the forest. The kitchen has everything you need. If you don't want to grill on the deck, you can cook a fine meal on the smooth-top cook stove. Dishes, utensils and cookware are all included as are the linens for the beds and baths. Franklin is a quaint, friendly town that loves to have festivals, parades and parties. It has a number of fine restaurants and shops. A recently completed Greenway follows the Little Tennessee River which runs through Franklin. You can hike or bike for several miles along the river. There are nature walks with guides to point out plants, birds and other things of interest. Franklin has a rich history with connections to the Cherokee Indians and to Scottish settlers. "Picking on the Square" during the summer and fall months invites everyone to come downtown with their folding chairs and listen to the free music and watch the folk dancing. If your taste is for more lively things there are a number of trails to hike (The famous Appalachian Trail is only a short distance from town). There is also white water rafting, good fishing for mountain trout and views of some of the impressive waterfalls nearby. Franklin is known as the "Gem Capital of the World". There are several ruby mines where you can pan for rubies and emeralds. Asheville, with its magnificent Biltmore House is less than an hour away as is Cherokee Village with the Harrah's Casino. Come stay in our lovely chalet. We have recently completely upgraded the house with new paint, new furniture including beds, refrigerator, stove, pictures, etc. Any time is good. In the spring you can enjoy the mountain laurel and the other native flowers; in the summer relax in the cool mountain air; in the autumn be amazed at the color display Mother Nature puts on for you. And if you are a mind to, spend Christmas or News Years and have a good chance of having a white Christmas. Wildlife abounds. Our guests have reported seeing lots of deer, wild turkeys, fox and even and occasional bear. This is my personal vacation property. I manage it myself and my family stays here when they come to the mountains. We maintain it in excellent condition. It is clean and luxurious. We would love to share it with you.
