Carbon Tax Scam

04:40
We’ve been hearing a lot about the virtues of a carbon tax. Some even have the gall to call it a “dividend”. Don’t be fooled by the fluffy talk. A tax on carbon is a bad idea—a combination of lots of big bad stuff—big government, big corporate influence, big deception, big job losses and big taxes on all of us. VISIT Clear Energy Alliance https://clearenergyalliance.com/ FOLLOW us! Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ClearEnergyAlliance Twitter: https://twitter.com/clearenergy Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/clearenergyalliance For list of sources and downloadable transcript: https://clearenergyalliance.com/project/carbon-tax-scam/ Script: Of all the horrendously bad ideas on energy, this one takes the cake. It’s called a carbon tax, a combination of everything big and bad—big government, big corporate influence, big deception, big job losses, and big taxes on all of us. The newest organization pushing this dopey and dangerous idea is called “Americans for Carbon Dividends.” Right away you know you are being scammed when the promoters of an idea destroy the meaning of words. It’s a tax, the definition of which is just about the opposite of a “dividend”. The basic scheme they are promoting is a tax on carbon producers such as refineries, mines, oil and gas production, and shipping. These taxes flow to the government and then the feds give the money to you. Tra-la-la, what could possibly go wrong? In a word… everything. When the carbon producers are taxed, those costs will simply be passed on to consumers. And since energy is part of everything we do it means everything will get more expensive. Are you liking this idea yet? Wait a minute, the promoters of a carbon tax assure us that the government will return that money to us in a rebate check—that’s the dividend part. But that begs the question: Why make everything more expensive just so the government can give some of what we spend back to us? Well, they say, this is what we must do to fight climate change. The idea is if fossil energy costs more people will use less of it. But, that’s not entirely true. People who can afford to pay more for energy will mostly keep using it as they always have, but the poorest among us—those who spend the highest percentage of their income on energy—will get hammered. It’s the poor who will forego that road trip to grandma’s and keep the house hotter in summer and colder in winter among other sacrifices. But, carbon taxers say the poor will get more money back than the middle and upper classes. Ok, so what we’ve got here is another wealth redistribution scheme. Of course anyone who has ever witnessed government in action knows that there is a giant cost to any program bureaucrats administer. Just think about all the waste, fraud and abuse in our income tax system. A carbon tax will work much the same way, except the government won’t be directly taking money out of your paycheck. Sneaky, isn’t it? And what would American manufacturers do if it suddenly got much more expensive to build things in the U.S.? That’s right, some of them would simply relocate to other countries, or go out of business because they can’t compete with companies outside the U.S. that have less-stringent environmental regulations. A study commissioned by the National Association of Manufacturers found that a carbon tax would destroy between four and twenty million American jobs. A carbon tax is one of those things that the more you look at it, the dumber it gets. But carbon-taxers say if that’s the case, why are big corporations like Exxon-Mobil and Shell getting on board? Why do you think? Several large U.S. cities and the state of Rhode Island have filed lawsuits against U.S. oil companies using climate change as a pretext to extort money. Think Tobacco Settlement. These companies are being promised they won’t be sued if a carbon tax is enacted, so it’s a low-cost insurance policy. Other rich people and corporations are supporting the tax because it’s a no-cost way to virtue signal. The big money behind Americans for Carbon Dividends knows it’s going to be a tough sell. The organization expects to spend $10 million in the first year alone and won’t even try to get the plan introduced in Congress until 2021. That’s quite a commitment, but they know large-scale public deceptions take time. Prepare yourselves for loads of carbon tax BS in the months and years to come. For the Clear Energy Alliance, I’m Mark Mathis. Power On.

China has provided over $US700 million in loans and investments to build a North-South Super Highway that runs straight across the Caribbean island. Chinese engineers from the China Harbour company faced major challenges, such as inclement weather, many hills and rocky terrain to construct it. The Chinese Company JISCO ( Jiuquan Iron and Steel Group Co.) just purchased a major bauxite manufacturing plant in Jamaica, which is used for aluminum. The bauxite producer has also invested into agricultural coops in China to raise crops and livestock. Jisco has plans to do the same in Jamaica’s breadbasket region. Jamaica’s Finance Minister The Hon. Audley Shaw talks to CCTV.com’s ‘Meet Diplomats’ host Li Shou’en to explain further details. Jones and Tangles in the Mining Industry," interviewed by Paul Burnett for the Global Mining and Materials Research Project. Paul C. Jones has worked for over fifty years as a mining engineer, executive, and consultant in over twenty countries. Getting his start in mining engineering in British Guiana in the early 1960s, Jones built a career in the 1970s and 1980s overseeing the exploration, development, and management of mining properties for utility companies in the US Central West. During the second phase of his career from the 1980s through 2010, Jones worked as an executive for several mining companies. Since the 1990s, Jones worked as a consultant for the industry, co-founded and expanded several exploration and management companies, such as Mystery Creek Resources, and served on the boards of multiple mining companies. Today, Mr. Jones continues to run the consulting company, Sovereign Management Group, Ltd., that he founded in 1996. He has been active in mining outreach and education for many years, particularly as an adjunct professor at the Colorado School of Mines, and as co-developer of an online lecture series, www.allaboutmining.org, for K-12 teachers. When Democrats Loved Deregulation

04:54
Left-leaning politicians of the 1970s understood that red tape punishes consumers and protects big business. The leading deregulator of that era was none other than Jimmy Carter. ———————— Subscribe to our YouTube channel: http://youtube.com/reasontv Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Reason.Magaz... Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/reason Subscribe to our podcast at iTunes: https://goo.gl/az3a7a Reason is the planet's leading source of news, politics, and culture from a libertarian perspective. Go to reason.com for a point of view you won't get from legacy media and old left-right opinion magazines. ———————— When President Donald Trump bragged in his first State of the Union address about cutting red tape, the Democratic response was no surprise. "Deregulation," warned Center for American Progress Senior Advisor Sam Berger in Fortune, "is simply a code word for letting big businesses cut corners at everyone else's expense." But many leading Democrats had the opposite view in the 1970s. Then, at the dawn of the deregulation era, left-leaning politicians and economists understood that excessive government management of industry let the big-business incumbents get away with lousy performance at the expense of competitors, taxpayers, and consumers. The leading figure in that fight to cut red tape and shut down entire federal agencies was none other than Jimmy Carter. It was Sen. Ted Kennedy who held extensive Senate hearings in the early '70s, with testimony from the likes of Ralph Nader and liberal economist Alfred Kahn, about the benefits of lifting state controls on the airline industry. The resulting Airline Deregulation Act of 1978, signed by Carter, killed the Civil Aeronautics Board—a federal agency that decided which airlines could fly where, and even what they could charge. The new competition to the old airline cartel reduced fares, expanded destinations, increased safety, and made air travel an option for those of us who aren't rich. Carter also lifted stifling government oversight of the rail and trucking industries under a Democrat-controlled House and Senate. The result? Competition intensified, prices dropped, and consumers saved more money on everyday products. In 1978, President Carter signed a bill that lifted Prohibition-era criminal restrictions on home brewing. The legalization of do-it-yourself beer production unleashed a boom of experimentation, paving the way for the craft beer revolution that is ongoing to this day. The year that Carter loosened the rules, the U.S. was home to a mere 50 breweries. Today there are well over 5,000. In two generations of beermaking, America went from global laughingstock to world leader. The governor of California during Carter's presidency was none other than Jerry Brown, then known as "Governor Moonbeam" for his far-out musings, glittery social life, and lefty politics. Yet Brown, too, could be a fiery skeptic of government. In his terrific second inaugural address in 1979, Brown stated that "many regulations primarily protect the past, prop up privilege or prevent sensible economic choices." But even while some sectors were unleashed four decades ago by far-seeing Democrats and Republicans alike, too many governments at the local, state, and federal levels have forgotten those lessons, and instead imposed entirely new categories of regulations. Occupational licensing, which applied to about one in 10 jobs 40 years ago, now impacts one in three. So how did the party of Jimmy Carter and sideburns-era Jerry Brown become the ideological home of Elizabeth Warren and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez? One explanation may be that Democratic support for deregulation back then was born out of a sense of nearly hopeless desperation in the face of stagflation. Cutting red tape to foster dynamism was about the last move politicians had left. Our long economic expansion and stock-market boom will soon come to an end, imposing limits on government precisely at the moment when it's asked to do more. When that day of reckoning comes, the best questions for lawmakers of both parties to ask may just be: What would Jimmy Carter do? Gold and Silver Weekly Update for w/e 7th December 2018

11:49
https://www.illuminatisilver.com Today is Saturday 8th December 2018 and we are providing our gold and silver weekly update for the week ending 7th December. Gold rose $26 last week from $1,222 to $1248 having hit a high of $1,250 and a low of $1,221. In sterling terms gold finished the week at £980 that’s up £22 and in Euros it closed at 1,096 Euros that’s up 17 Euros on the week. Silver rose 45 cents from $14.17 to $14.62 having hit a high of $14.66 and a low of $14.17. In sterling terms, it closed at £11.48 that’s up 37 pence and in Euros it closed at 12.84 euros that’s up 0.32 euros. The Gold to Silver Ratio fell from 86.2:1 to 85.3:1 The Dow Jones closed on Friday at 24,388 down 558 points on the day and down 1150 points on the week, and the NASDAQ closed at 6,969 down 219 points on the day and down 361 points on the week and the S&P 500 closed at 2,633 down 62 points on the day and down 127 points on the week. Brent Crude rose $2.21 from $59.46 to $61.67 and US Light Crude rose $1.68 from $50.93 to $52.61 The dollar index stands at 96.51 that’s down 0.76 on the week. On Friday there was a smaller than expected Non-farm Payrolls Report announced. Anticipated were 190,000 – 200,000 new jobs whereas the reality was 155,000, and to add wood to the fire, the October jobs report which accounted for 250,000 new jobs was downgraded to 237,000. Average hourly earnings rose by 0.2% against an envisaged 0.3% and on Thursday the Trade deficit figures showed a deficit of $55.5 billion against an expected $55.1bn So, let’s take a look at the economic news to be announced this coming week: • On Tuesday we have November’s Producer Price index • On Wednesday Consumer Price Index, Core CPI and the Federal Budget announcement all for November. • Thursday, we have the Import price index • and on Friday Retail Sales, and Industrial Production for November. So, we have to ask ourselves – since the dollar is the important determinant on gold and silver prices, what are the influences that are likely to bear upon it. Well we have to take into account a rather dovish tone from the FED on interest rates, lower than envisaged new jobs created, lower core inflation than predicted and worries over domestic and International trade levels. Add to the mix possible increasing upset with China and the holding of Meng Wanzhou of Huawei by Canada on behalf of the US with China threatening retaliation, and further revelations of the Mueller probe – none of this auguring very well for stability and confidence. So, we can see gold and silver continuing to rise a little short term but are of the opinion that we are still operating within this relatively tight band of $1 for silver and $100 for gold. All of which, to some degree will be sorted on 19th December when we shall see what the FED decides to do about interest rates. NAFTA, explained with a toy car

06:37
NAFTA made your car cheaper, USMCA could change that. Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO When the North American Free Trade Agreement began in 1994, auto companies in the US, Canada and Mexico could trade parts and cars without paying tariffs. And they could source parts and labor from the cheapest places. That is a big reason why US car prices have only risen seven percent in 25 years. But the proposed US Mexico Canada Agreement -- or USMCA for short -- could change that; President Trump’s new deal would increase the regulations that car manufacturers need to meet in order to sell tariff-free cars. We built a Ford Mustang to explain. Could driverless vehicles spell the end of the road for truck drivers?

08:38
Watch more from Making Sen$e: https://bit.ly/2D8w9kc Read more economic news: https://to.pbs.org/2qRyskq The trucking industry has long faced a driver shortage, in part because of high risk, low pay and long hours. The rise of autonomous vehicles could alleviate that problem--but it could also eliminate jobs for a population of older men who lack college degrees and might have difficulty finding new work. Paul Solman explores the conundrum for our special Future of Work series. THIS MAN LOST $95 BILLION BY SELLING HIS SHARES FOR $800...

THIS MAN LOST $95 BILLION BY SELLING HIS SHARES FOR $800... ► Subscribe: https://goo.gl/vHN6qB For copyright matters please contact us at: [email protected] We all have a few of those times that we regret not making a deal with someone. Whether it’s in our business or personal life, there are often once in a lifetime opportunities that arise. Just Imagine wanting to invest in a huge craze before it became massive. Things like frozen yogurt, Google, or even Bitcoin. These following companies or people have similar tales of woe and had the chance to do something great, but threw it all away. That’s what makes these the ten worst deals of all time. Selling Google for $750000 Once upon a time there was a relatively obscure company named Excite. It was owned by George Bell. If you haven’t heard of this venture, then that’s alright. You might have though if they had taken a deal back in the day to buy Google. The selling price then was $1 million dollars for the acquisition. And get this - Google was on board. In fact, Google was so interested in making the sale that they even counter offered with $750 000 when they got rejected. The Man Who Rejected the Beatles While there is some debate as to how the story went down, it is clear that Decca headed by Dick Rowe had a chance to acquire the illustrious Beatles. This was 50 years ago now. While Decca would not currently be managing this band, the company could have benefited greatly from the Beatles craze. Buying a Phone This next story is sure to make you cringe, and even phone a friend. Back when Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone, he and his team made an offer to Western Union. That’s right, they were willing to sell the patents to the very first telephone. They telegraphed the company and said that all they wanted was $100 000. Selling Alaska for 7.2 Million Dollars Alaska is an American state riddled with controversy. People want to live there and they don’t. It’s neighbor to the North West Territories of Canada. This region is known for frigid temperatures, strange light patterns, and general barrenness of the land. 2 Pizzas for 10000 bitcoins Pizza can be oh so satisfying. And when the craving hits, people will do a lot of strange things to obtain this food. However, none could be more peculiar than the developer who paid 10,000 bitcoins for a measly two pepperoni pizzas. Back then, bitcoin was not in its hay day. But today the sum is worth $100 million. Ronald Wayne 10% of Apple Inc. This next story is enough to keep you up at night. Ronald Wayne reportedly sold his 10% share of Apple for $800. He was the company’s third co-founder. Apparently, Wayne was worried about Steve Job’s spending habits at the time. As one of the people responsible for the company, he feared that he would become personally liable for them should the company not pan out. Ross Perot’s Attempt to Buy Microsoft Ross Perot is a man with some regrets in life. Back in 1979, he was the head of a Dallas company called Electronic Data Systems. He had a chance to buy Microsoft from Bill Gates back when Bill was 23 years old. Back then, Microsoft was only worth $2 million. The Sale Of Louisiana Louisiana, famous for hot sauce and just all around country greatest. Who wouldn’t see the potential here. The French sure did, with their fearless leader Napoleon Bonaparte making a deal with Spain to get the territory in 1800. But it didn’t stay this way for long. When Thomas Jefferson became president in 1801, and he was determined to get New Orleans, a city in Louisiana. AOL Merging with Time Warner 18 years ago, AOL made an expensive deal. They garnered up a whopping $160 billion to buy Time Warner. This is the largest merger in American history. The deal was announced on January 10, 2000. However, this is not a tale of a perfect marriage. The merger caused the new company to plummet to a seventh of its previous worth. Blockbuster Rejecting Netflix This last deal is a real bane to the existence of Blockbuster. They were once a popular chain of DVD rental stores, and now they just vanished. They could have made the transition to digital movies a little easier though on their pocketbooks. The CEO of Blockbuster, John Antioco, was approached by Reed Hastings. We hope you enjoyed the video. We want to know which deal you found the most shocking? Do you think you would have regrets if you didn’t pony up like some of these individuals? Let us know in the comments. And if you liked the video, like share, and don’t forget to subscribe and turn on notifications so you will be the first to know when we got a new video for you. The Toxic E-Waste Trade Killing Pakistan's Poorest

28:12
The E-Waste Curse: The deadly effect of dumping E-waste in Pakistan Pakistan has become an illegal dumping ground for some of the 50 million tons of e-waste created each year. Karachi's poor earn a living from the toxic detritus, but the vicious cycle of consumption could prove fatal. In Pakistan, the massive arrival of electronic waste has created an informal substance economy that feeds 150,000 people. The country's poor salvage what they can from the cast-offs of the electronic revolution: copper, steel, brass. Nassir is one who has cashed in on the opportunities found in old cables and hard-drives. "It’s a good business. I have more and more work", he says. Yet workers pay the price for a few grams of copper; 4 million people die every year because of electronic waste and recycling workers have the lowest life expectancy in Pakistan. In his recycling shop, Akhbar earns 2€ on a good day. It feeds his family of six, but his health has suffered. "This job is dangerous. It’s very toxic". And the toxic legacy is far-reaching - "It’s a catastrophe...especially for the children", warns Saba, an activist for the WWF. "They will continue to live here and be poisoned, it’s dangerous for them and it’s dangerous for the next generations". In our relentlessly consumerist world, can the global poor be saved from the toxic trade in e-waste? Developers Find New Jobs for Robots

02:49
Robots are more common than you might think, like this one: the Roomba. HELEN GREINER: "We want to do something simple that people could use every day. And that's what inspired us to build the Roomba. We wanted to be helpful around the house." Helen Greiner helped to form iRobot, a manufacturer of robots. She says robots might be part of us in the future. HELEN GREINER: "You can have robotics incorporated into your body, to give back that arm or leg that you've lost, either in [military] service or through some accident or disease." Recently, the Association for Unmanned Vehicles International met in Colorado. Association president Michael Toscano says civilian uses of robots are growing. MICHAEL TOSCANO: "Whether it be firefighting, whether it be first-responders, whether it be disaster response, unmanned systems allows that human being to be able to do their mission with an extension of their hands, their eyes and their ears." Radio-controlled robots can explode bombs or buried land mines. Edison Hudson of iRobot says some robots can swim and can study ocean pollution. EDISON HUDSON: "We can put them in the ocean and they'll swim for eight or nine months, collecting data." Here, the government's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, DARPA, demonstrates a robotic man. Robert Mandelbaum works for the agency. ROBERT MANDELBAUM: "DARPA has a history of inventing things like the Arpanet, which is the father of the Internet, that was in the 1960s, Saturn V rockets, stealth aircraft." This robot is the Autonomous Robotic Manipulation program, also known as ARM. It can examine objects, find one with a design, and move it from one place to another. Mandelbaum says more difficult work could be possible in the future. ROBERT MANDELBAUM: "Pick up a gym bag, unzip it, reach inside, feel around without visual feedback, and find an object that's inside the gym bag." In this way, a robot might itself find a hidden bomb or help a disabled person with his clothing. DARPA plans to let anyone write computer software for the robot, then go on the Internet and watch a model perform the work. I'm Faith Lapidus.

The Future of Trucking

06:55
Imagining the future of the vast trucking industry that will become autonomous in the coming years. Subscribe for our newest TDC original mini-documentary: http://bit.ly/2pu8oNz Video by Bryce Plank and Robin West. More information on this topic: The future of trucking: http://tcrn.ch/2f1cx2Z http://bit.ly/2pyRU2K Tesla's electric truck: http://bit.ly/2nKwlQi Platooning: http://bit.ly/2eg8UKi Truckers discuss the future of trucking: http://bit.ly/2oG2MM9 Script: The semi-truck. Our modern lives are completely dependent on them. Look around you. Every object you see probably traveled on at least one big rig. Here in America, truckers make up 2% of the workforce. But with multiple game-changing technologies converging simultaneously — and the relentlessness of the hyper-competitive global marketplace — the industry will be revolutionized within the next two decades. This is an examination of the future of trucking. Before we get into the technology that will turn it all upside-down, we must first understand the way this extremely fragmented industry works now. To the numbers! There are about 3 million drivers for 2.5 million trucks in the US. Those trucks are owned by 532,000 carrier companies, but 90% of these fleets have fewer than six trucks—and half of all carriers are single individuals who own and operate their own rig. Then you have the middlemen, the freight brokers. These 13,000 companies play matchmaker between the manufacturers and wholesalers (who are trying to get their goods to market) and the retailers (who make the final sale to the consumer). Because this industry is so splintered, there aren’t universal software systems tying it all together. In fact, 67% of shippers don’t use software at all and rely solely on paper records—in 2017! This creates tremendous inefficiency. When every piece of information has to be communicated through human interactions, drivers are frequently forced to wait hours to book or pick-up a load. And sometimes they just don’t, an estimated 20% of trucks on the road are empty. To solve these problems, investors are spending hundreds of millions of dollars on startups competing to develop the silver bullet, a software layer that can be used by every segment of the industry. Another area ripe for modernization is how trucks are powered. Today, medium and heavy duty trucks account for 6% of the greenhouse gas emissions produced in America. To their credit, companies like Walmart are looking to transition to fleets powered by cleaner natural gas, the bridge fuel America has embraced to transition to renewables. That’s where Tesla comes in. Elon Musk, CEO of the electric car manufacturer, plans to unveil an electric-powered semi-truck in the next six months. Battery range will be the biggest obstacle to the widespread adoption of electric trucks as Tesla’s pack will probably only have a 200-300 mile range. The other challenge will be having enough charging stations — and enough power available at each station — to support fleets of Tesla trucks. The Nikola One attempts to overcome these limitations. This gorgeous, hydrogen fuel cell truck will have a range up to 1,200 miles. The young company plans to begin leasing their trucks by 2020 for about $6,000 a month — including the cost of fuel — but it will first need to build a network of about 400 charging stations throughout the country. Cutting the emissions of semi-trucks is great for the environment, but the real cost-saving opportunity lies in cutting out the drivers. It’s been more than a year now since six convoys of semi-autonomous “smart” trucks arrived at the Netherlands port city of Rotterdam after leaving factories from as far away as Sweden and Southern Germany. That experiment relied on a system called platooning, a semi-autonomous feature allowing trucks to find each other, link up, and draft to cut down on wind drag, saving energy—just like in NASCAR or the Tour de France. And in October, a self-driving truck completed the first commercial shipment by an autonomous vehicle, delivering a load of Budweiser more than 120 miles across Colorado. A human got the truck on the highway and engaged the autonomous system, then climbed out of the driver’s seat. That truck was made by Otto motors, which was recently acquired by Uber. And dozens of massive, 240-ton trucks are already being used in Australian mines. So that’s the near-future we’ll see in the next 10 years: fleets of driverless trucks. Some will be designed to be autonomous, while others will have the system installed later. Many will be electric, and nearly all will be connected to efficient networks that are not slowed down by frequent human input.

🇨🇴 Colombia's Gold Rush | Fault Lines

24:28
Gold fever is sweeping across South America. Nowhere is it more lethal than in Colombia, where the gold rush has become a new axle in Colombia's civil war. Turf wars are erupting between paramilitaries, and leftist rebel groups fighting to take control of mining regions. It's fueling an old ideological conflict and has displacing hundreds of people. Helicopter raids by the Colombian Army on small community mining collectives have become commonplace, and the Colombian government is accused of targeting poor workers to protect big business interests, and operating with impunity from human rights violations. Thousands have fled their homes where land is violently contested, and others live in fear they'll be removed from their land, arrested, or killed. The multinationals are flooding in too. With gold now worth around $1,500 an ounce, everyone is getting in on the act, including North American mining companies. Colombia's pro-business mentality has seen arbitrary concessions by the state sold to multinational companies, often on indigenous land. Fault Lines traveled to Colombia to speak to the people caught in the middle. The rural workers and artisan miners who've mined for generations, and some whose ancestors were enslaved during the first gold rush centuries ago. Others are former coca farmers, put out of work by the US-led Plan Colombia.
