The Renaissance: Was it a Thing? - Crash Course World History #22

11:33
In which John Green teaches you about the European Renaissance. European learning changed the world in the 15th and 16th century, but was it a cultural revolution, or an evolution? We'd argue that any cultural shift that occurs over a couple of hundred years isn't too overwhelming to the people who live through it. In retrospect though, the cultural bloom in Europe during this time was pretty impressive. In addition to investigating what caused the Renaissance and who benefitted from the changes that occurred, John will tell you just how the Ninja Turtles got mixed up in all this. Mathematics of Machine Learning

09:53
Do you need to know math to do machine learning? Yes! The big 4 math disciplines that make up machine learning are linear algebra, probability theory, calculus, and statistics. I'm going to cover how each are used by going through a linear regression problem that predicts the price of an apartment in NYC based on its price per square foot. Then we'll switch over to a logistic regression model to change it up a bit. This will be a hands-on way to see how each of these disciplines are used in the field. Using data and technology to improve patient outcomes

01:03:23
These five presenters share their innovative projects which use data and technology to improve outcomes for cancer patients. 1. Twenty five per cent of patients seen at the North Coast Cancer Institute are prostate radiation therapy patients. Treatment requires a full bladder and empty rectum to decrease toxicities to the bladder, rectum and small bowel. However, due to non-compliance, an in-house study was conducted into consistently achieving full bladder volumes by using CT simulation. This presentation reveals the study results. Abstract title: The use of a bladder scanner at simulation to achieve consistently full bladder volumes. Vanessa Connors, Coffs Harbour Hospital 2. Professor Tim Shaw discusses the development of an online, evidence-based eLearning program (Qstream) for busy general practitioners (GPs). Prof. Shaw addresses the long-term benefits and results in improving best practice cancer care among primary health care professionals. Abstract title: Using the Qstream eLearning method to improve best practice cancer care through increased knowledge retention. Professor Tim Shaw, University of Sydney 3. Previous clinical trials have proven difficult to attract haematology malignant studies due to low incidence and geographical challenges. To overcome this and keep haematologists up to date with research trials, avoid patient transfer and cultural barriers, and provide accessible knowledge management, a mobile application has been developed called Clintrial Refer. This free 'app' features a current, comprehensive list of haematology trials, accessible anytime, anywhere on smartphones and iPads. The 'app' has already been downloaded by more than 600 people since its launch in May 2013. Abstract title: ClinTrial Refer - a mobile application to connect patients with local clinical trials. Roslyn Ristuccia, St George Hospital 4. With so much data to wade through, rapid learning can be difficult. This presentation delves into a recent study to locate data from previous lung cancer patients in order to learn and validate a prediction model for outcomes after radiotherapy, and allow for analysis of large datasets in multiple hospitals without the need for a centralised data pooling. Abstract title: Rapid learning healthcare network for prediction of outcomes in lung cancer patients. Dr. Shalini Vinod, Liverpool Hospital 5. Graeme Bell presents an innovative local information system which was implemented in the Illawarra Local Health District in 2011with the aim to rapidly learn and inform care. This oncology information system (OIS) has been developed around 'big data', purposefully obtaining data in the course of routine clinical practice and using it to drive multiple projects. Abstract title: Use of a local oncology information system to rapidly learn and inform care at the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD). The Health Data Revolution: Improving Outcomes, Protecting Privacy

57:03
Will the next great medical insight come from a clinical trial, a laboratory study — or a database search? Today, health systems and insurers have access to a mountain of data about millions of Americans: what medications they take, their health history, even, in some cases, their genetics—plus an emerging body of mobile health data. Using “big data” techniques, doctors and researchers are already mining this data to deliver better care and to gain insights into the kind of hyper-specific questions that clinical trials and observational studies struggle to answer. The approach promises major, rapid-fire, highly-personalized discoveries. At the same time, with the specter of cyberattacks and hacks looming, the need for rugged privacy protection has never been greater. In this Forum, experts in healthcare data and privacy will discuss the potential for future discovery, practical steps to enable progress, and how information can be kept secure. Part of the The Dr. Lawrence H. and Roberta Cohn Forums, this event was presented jointly with HuffPost on Tuesday, December 5, 2017. Watch the entire series at ForumHSPH.org.

Fundamentals of Upstream Oil and Gas

09:23
Oil 101 - A FREE Introduction to the Oil and Gas Industry I this first of 10 modules, we introduce the learner to some key fundamentals of the Upstream segment of the oil and gas industry. The full Oil 101 course includes: +Introduction to Upstream +Introduction to Midstream +Introduction to Downstream +Introduction to Exploration +Introduction to Drilling +Introduction to Production +Introduction to Natural Gas +Introduction to Refining +Introduction to Supply and Trading +Introduction to Petroleum Product Marketing Learn More about Oil 101: http://www.ektinteractive.com/ http://www.ektinteractive.com/oil-101/ So, What is Upstream? Most oil and gas companies’ business structures are organized according to business segment, assets, or function. The upstream segment of oil and gas is also known as exploration and production, or E&P because it encompasses activities related to searching for, recovering, and producing crude oil and natural gas. Upstream is all about wells, where to locate them; how deep and how far to drill them; and how to design, construct, operate and manage them to deliver the greatest possible return on investment with the lightest, safest and smallest operational footprint. In fact, the E&P sector should probably be called the EDP sector - because “you can’t find oil if you don’t drill wells.” Exploration Obtaining the Lease Let’s start with exploration which involves the operator obtaining a lease and permission to drill from the owner of onshore or offshore acreage thought to contain oil or gas. Then the operator must conduct geological and geophysical surveys to select the first well site to explore for, and hopefully find, economic accumulations of oil or gas. This well is often called a “wildcat well.” Drilling is physically creating the “borehole” in the ground that will eventually become a productive oil or gas well. This work is typically done by rig contractors and service companies in the Oilfield Services business sector. On a wellsite, there can be as many as 30-40 different service contractors providing expertise to the operator. Wells can be relatively simple or unbelievably complex. Wells can totally vertical for miles or both deep and horizontal. There are also highly complex “J” and “S” configured wells with numerous branches, or laterals, emanating from the original, or “mother”, hole. These are called “deviated wells.” Production Finally, let’s discuss production, where reserves are “converted to cash” by maximizing the recovery of hydrocarbons from subsurface reservoirs. Essentially, production is efficiently bringing the hydrocarbons to the surface and treating them as needed to make them marketable. So that’s the basics of E&P. We will drill deeper into each of these operations in the complete Oil 101 course at a later date. Now, let’s talk about unconventional resources, clearly the hottest topic in oil and gas over the last decade. Unconventional Future of Oil and Gas Unconventional resources are defined as any resource extracted, or produced, by any method other than the traditional vertical or slightly deviated well. The three main sources of technological breakthroughs that have made unconventional developments profitable include: Horizontal drilling Hydraulic fracturing Subsea engineering (especially deep water production)

Heiko - The Shogun Machine Learning Toolbox

19:47
Heiko - The Shogun Machine Learning Toolbox [EuroPython 2014] [24 July 2014] We present the Shogun Machine Learning Toolbox, a framework for Machine Learning, which is the art of finding structure in data, with applications in object recognition, brain-computer interfaces, robotics, stock-prices prediction, etc. We give a gentle introduction to ML and Shogun's Python interface, focussing on intuition and visualisation. ----- We present the Shogun Machine Learning Toolbox, a unified framework for Machine Learning algorithms. Machine Learning (ML) is the art of finding structure in data in an automated way and has given rise to a wide range of applications such as recommendation systems, object recognition, brain-computer interfaces, robotics, predicting stock prices, etc. Our toolbox offers extensive bindings with other software and computing languages, Python being the major target. The library was initiated in 1999 and remained under heavy development henceforth. In addition to its mature core-framework, Shogun offers state-of-the-art techniques based on latest ML research. This is partly made possible by the 21 Google Summer of Code projects (5+8+8 since 2011) that our students successfully completed. Shogun's codebase has >20k commits made by >100 contributors representing >500k lines of code. While its core is written in C++, a unique of technique for generating interfaces allows usage from a wide range of target languages -- under the same syntax. This includes in particular Python, but also Matlab/Octave, Java, C#, R, ruby, and more. We believe that users should be able to choose their favourite language rather than us dictating this choice. The same applies for supported OS (Linux, Mac, Win). Shogun is part of Debian Linux. Features of Shogun include most classical ML methods such as classification, regression, dimensionality reduction, clustering, etc, most of them in different flavours. All implemented algorithms in Shogun work on a modular data representation, which allows to easily switch between different sorts of objects as for example strings or matrices. Common ML-tasks and data IO can be carried under a unified interface. This is also true for the various external open-source libraries that are embedded within Shogun. Code examples are provided for all implemented algorithms. The main and most complete set of examples is in the Python language. In addition, in order to push usage of Shogun in education at universities, we recently started adding more illustrative IPython notebooks. A growing list of statically rendered versions are readily available from our [website](http://www.shogun-toolbox.org/page/documentation/notebook) and implement a cross-over of tutorial-style explanations, code, and visualization examples. We even took this up a notch and started building our own IPython-notebook server with Shogun installed in the cloud at (try cloud button in notebook view) . This allows users to try Shogun without installation via the IPython notebook web interface. All example notebooks can be loaded, interactively modified, and executed. In addition, using the Python Django framework, we built a collection of interactive web-demos where users can play around with basic ML algorithms, [demos](http://www.shogun-toolbox.org/page/documentation/demo) In the proposed talk, we will give a gentle and general introduction to ML and the core functionality of Shogun, with a focus on its Python interface. This includes solving basic ML tasks such as classification and regression and some of the more recent features, such as last year's GSoC projects and their IPython notebook writeups. ML material will be presented with a focus on intuition and visualisation and no previous familiarity with ML methods is required. ## Key points in the talk * What are the goals in ML? * Example problems in ML (classification, regression, clustering) * Some basic algorithm ideas * Focus on Visualisation, not Maths ## Intended Audience * All people dealing with data (data scientists, big-data hackers) who are looking for tools to deal with it * People with a general interest but no education in Machine Learning * People interested in the technology behind Shogun (swig, cloud notebook server, web-demos) * People from the ML community (scipy-stack) * ML scientists/Statisticians ## Code examples * [Classification](https://github.com/shogun-toolbox/shogun/blob/develop/examples/undocumented/python_modular/classifier_libsvm_modular.py) * [Clustering](https://github.com/shogun-toolbox/shogun/blob/develop/examples/undocumented/python_modular/graphical/em_2d_gmm.py) * [Source seperation](https://github.com/shogun-toolbox/shogun/blob/develop/examples/undocumented/python_modular/graphical/converter_jade_bss.py) * [IPython notebook examples](http://www.shogun-toolbox.org/page/documentation/notebook) ### Slide examples See our Europython 2010 [slides](https://www.drop

A Data driven Method for In game Decision Making in MLB

24:13
In this work, we show how machine learning can be applied to generate a model that could lead to better on-field decisions by predicting a pitcher's performance in the next inning. Specifically we show how to use multi-task machine learning to build pitcher-specific predictive models that can be used to estimate whether a starting pitcher will surrender a run if allowed to start the next inning.

Fracking explained in five minutes. Fracking is a controversial topic. On the one side the gas drilling companies, on the other citizen opposed to this drilling method. Politicians are also divided on the matter. We try to take a neutral look on fracking. It is relevant for all of us, because of high prices for energy and the danger for our drinking water. This video focuses mostly on the debate currently ongoing in europe. In a lot of european countries there is a public outcry against fracking, espacially in germany. But the facts in this video are relevant to all of us. Short videos, explaining things. For example Evolution, the Universe, Stock Market or controversial topics like Fracking. Because we love science. We would love to interact more with you, our viewers to figure out what topics you want to see. Applications of Linear Algebra Part 1 Learn to use linear algebra in computer graphics by making images disappear in an animation or creating a mosaic or fractal and in data mining to measure similarities between movies, songs, or friends. About this Course From simulating complex phenomenon on supercomputers to storing the coordinates needed in modern 3D printing, data is a huge and growing part of our world. A major tool to manipulate and study this data is linear algebra. This course is part 1 of a 2-part course. In this part, we’ll learn basics of matrix algebra with an emphasis on application. This class has a focus on computer graphics while also containing examples in data mining. We’ll learn to make an image transparent, fade from one image to another, and rotate a 3D wireframe model. We’ll also mine data; for example, we will find similar movies that one might enjoy seeing. In the topic of sports ranking, we’ll be ready to participate in March Madness and submit our own mathematically generated brackets to compete against millions of others. The lectures are developed to encourage you to explore and create your own ideas either through your own programming but also with online tools developed for the course. Come to this course ready to investigate your own ideas. Enroll in Applications of Linear Algebra Part 1 from DavidsonX at https://www.edx.org/course/applications-linear-davidsonx-d003x-1

Shoucheng Zhang: "Quantum Computing, AI and Blockchain: The Future of IT" | Talks at Google

58:10
Prof. Shoucheng Zhang discusses three pillars of information technology: quantum computing, AI and blockchain. He presents the fundamentals of crypto-economic science, and answers questions such as: What is the intrinsic value of a medium of exchange? What is the value of consensus and how does it emerge? How can math be used to create distributed self-organizing consensus networks to create a data-marketplace for AI and machine learning? Prof. Zhang is the JG Jackson and CJ Wood professor of physics at Stanford University. He is a member of the US National Academy of Science, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He discovered a new state of matter called topological insulator in which electrons can conduct along the edge without dissipation, enabling a new generation of electronic devices with much lower power consumption. For this ground breaking work he received numerous international awards, including the Buckley Prize, the Dirac Medal and Prize, the Europhysics Prize, the Physics Frontiers Prize and the Benjamin Franklin Medal. He is also the founding chairman of DHVC venture capital fund, which invests in AI, blockchain, mobile internet, big data, AR/VR, genomics and precision medicine, sharing economy and robotics.

Here be Dragons 2018: Track A

05:15:25
Sea monsters such as the kraken, prister, and rosmarus indicated uncharted territory on elaborate new maps of the world in medieval times. Despite many advances in mapping technology and data acquisition in the last 500 years, our ocean remains largely uncharted and poorly understood. Here be Dragons convened explorers, innovators, artists, scientists, and storytellers to identify the uncharted territories that still exist in ocean exploration and storytelling. In response, MIT students will work with explorers to develop and present collaborative projects to deploy new and emerging technologies in the field that address gaps in our understanding and sharing of the ocean. Select proposals will be funded for Rapid Field Deployments. In collaboration with the National Geographic Society and New England Aquarium. Sylvia Ann Hewlett: "Executive Presence" | Talks at Google

01:01:50
Do you exude confidence and credibility? Can you command a room? Sylvia Ann Hewlett, one of the world's most influential business thinkers, cracks the code of Executive Presence (EP). You might have the qualifications to be considered for your dream job, but you won't get it unless you can signal that you're "leadership material" and that you "have what it takes." Professionals are judged on presence as well as performance. Using a wealth of data, Hewlett reveals EP to be a dynamic mix of three things: how you act (gravitas), how you speak (communication) and how you look (appearance). Sylvia Ann Hewlett is the founding president of the Center for Talent Innovation, a Manhattan-based think tank where she chairs a Task Force of 82 multinational companies focused on fully realizing the new streams of labor in the global marketplace. Sylvia's books can be found on Google Play: http://goo.gl/OFqhbv

PRACTICE: Outside In | Inside Out

03:33:37
This symposium considers discourse on contemporary issues of design practice in two parts: the external pressures of economic, environmental, and political systems, and internal forces of tools, techniques, and strategies for design. Addressing the multifaceted nature of the profession, we will explore themes for the design of practice, such as work and labor, tools and technology, and ethics and agency. The symposium highlights potential avenues for the growth and constitution of practice, as well as the issues currently at stake within the profession. The following discussions confront pressing questions regarding the shifting responsibilities of design practice, and the future of practice itself. This symposium is generously sponsored by the Carl M. Sapers Ethics in Practice Fund, and co-hosted by the GSD Practice Platform and the Department of Architecture. Panelists: Aaron Cayer, Neena Verma, Jesse Keenan, Alison Brooks, Eduard Sancho Pou, Sawako Kaijima, Randy Deutsch, Robert Pietrusko Moderators: Mark Lee, Grace La

Alchemy on the Cutting Edge (2014) - Lawrence M. Principe

01:18:18
Lawrence M. Principe is the Drew Professor of the Humanities, Department of the History of Science and Technology, Johns Hopkins University. His lecture, "Alchemy on the Cutting Edge, Theoretical Innovations and the Pursuit of Transmutation" was given as the 21st Annual Dibner Library Lecture on December 11, 2014. It is widely believed that chemistry and alchemy parted company around the end of the 17th century. Chemistry became a modern science, alchemy withered away as a false pursuit. The historical reality is, however, very different. The separation of transmutational pursuits from “acceptable” chemistry was complex, having little to do with scientific developments. Recent archival discoveries show that prominent chemists continued to pursue transmutation until at least the 1760s. Even in the 19th century, new chemical ideas sparked more than one reconciliation between alchemy and chemistry. This lecture explores the resilience of transmutational aspirations and their adaptability to new chemical theories.

How to use Flash Cards | How to Study | Flashcards Study Tips

05:50
Hello Socratica Friends! We're here to help you be a Great Student. In this episode, we learn about the best way to use FLASH CARDS. Flash cards are a great tool to use anytime you need to memorize facts, fast. They're great for drilling vocabulary terms, learning dates in history...so many uses. The best thing about flash cards is that they help you figure out what you know, and what you don’t know. And although this may be uncomfortable, the best way to master a subject is to focus on what you DON’T know! In this video, we'll show you how we use flash cards, using an important technique known as "spaced repetition." Basically, don't try to cram in all your studying in one go! Make sure you break it up over a couple of days at least, with breaks in between. Try using flashcards following the Pomodoro method! Two fantastic techniques working together to help you be a Great Student. We recommend making flashcards the old fashioned way - with pen and paper, but if you'd like to use an app on your phone, we like Anki. Do you have a different method of studying with flash cards? Let us know what are your favourite study tips in the comments!
