A Candid View of Sierra Leone's Youth Working the Kono Diamond Mines

07:20
This video was shot in Sierra Leone's Kono diamond mining district. Infamous for the devastating effects of the civil war and the RUF's operation to mine diamonds. These diamonds, now popularly known as blood diamonds, were mined using forced labor and sold into the global diamond market. Profits were used to fuel the war. Today the diamond mines are officially "re-opened." However, the disparity between the internationally controlled mechanized diamond mine across town and this one where men purchase permission to mine from the government using only manuel labor is stark and unjust. To date there has been no investment in the working conditions of these mines for Sierra Leonins. While many of these men struggle to make ends meet the mining for diamonds creates a casino economy effect and heightens tensions. Many of these men have witnessed extreme violence and/or are ex-combatants or child soldiers themselves. This video gives a candid view of the men and their reactions to a American female entering the mine. This would not have been possible for me to shoot if the boss had not taken a liking to me and brought me through. I did compensate him afterwards and bought upon request, and a flurry of emotion, cigarettes enough for all in the mine to receive some. Filmed by Anjanette Decarlo, IEDS doctoral scholar. 2011.

The Mercenaries Profiting From Sierra Leone's Civil War (2000)

Soldiers of Fortune (2000) - Mercenaries, allegedly working for the Sierra Leone government, have been charged with defeating RUF rebels - but blood diamonds might be their true goal. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures Inside a helicopter mercenaries led by South African Neall Ellis fly fast and low over RUF rebel areas, shooting anything that moves. Congo, My Precious. The Curse of the coltan mines in Congo

52:01
Watch more https://rtd.rt.com/tags/illegal-mining/ The Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa is one of the world’s most resource-rich countries. A wide range of rare minerals can be found here in abundance, all commanding high prices in world commodity markets. Diamonds for jewellery, tantalum, tungsten and gold for electronics; uranium used in power generation and weaponry and many others. Congo has copious deposits of raw materials that are in high demand internationally but remains one of the poorest countries in the world. From colonisation, with the horrors of slavery and other atrocities, to a turbulent and equally brutal present in which militant groups control the mines, Congo’s richness in natural resources has brought nothing but misery. Referred to as “conflict minerals”, these riches leave only a trail of death, destruction and poverty. Under Belgian rule, Congolese labourers were often required to meet quotas when mining different minerals. Failure could mean punishment by having a hand cut off with a machete. The country gained independence in 1960, but that didn’t put a stop to slave and child labour or to crimes being committed to extract and exploit the minerals. Warring militant fractions from inside the country and beyond seized control of mines for their own benefit while terrorising local populations. For our translator, Bernard Kalume Buleri, his country’s history of turmoil is very personal; like most Congolese people, he and his family fell victim to the unending mineral based power struggle. Born in the year of his country’s independence, he has lived through war and seen his homeland torn apart by violent looting and greed. His story is a damning testament, illustrating how nature’s bounty, instead of being a blessing, becomes a deadly curse. Sula chief: Ferensola findings put us on radar of major players

07:05
The chief executive of Sula Iron & Gold (LON:SULA), Nick Warrell, reckons latest findings from the company's Ferensola gold mine in Sierra Leone will attract the interest of larger mining groups. Today the firm told investors that consultant SRK has estimated a tonnage range of between 5 and 7 mln tonnes at a grades between 4 and 8 g/t, the equivalent of 0.8 and 1.5mln ounces of gold. An area to start drilling has been selected and Sula is determining the best and most commercially viable route to carry this out. Warrell says this could mean a joint venture partnership or a Sula-led exploration programme.
SIERRA LEONE: FREETOWN: FOREIGNERS URGED TO LEAVE

02:47
Natural Sound Foreigners are being urged to leave Sierra Leone following increased violence and a wave of kidnappings by anti-government rebels. The rebels four year old war against the government has taken a disturbing new turn in recent months - with foreigners being targeted . An APTV crew is in Sierra Leone, which appears calm on the surface, but where foreigners can no longer feel safe. These foreigners in Sierra Leone's capital Freetown, were heading home this weekend, forced to leave by the threat of rebel violence and kidnappings. Italy has now joined the list of countries warning its citizens to get out of Sierra Leone while they still can. The journey to safety begins with a ferry trip to Freetown airport . These foreigners have good reason to feel scared - more than a dozen Europeans, including six Italian nuns, are being held hostage by rebels who have been fighting Sierra Leone's government since 1991. Most Westerners in Sierra Leone work for mining companies who have been forced to close their operations down after several workers were kidnapped. Security has been tightened around the capital but it is business as usual in central Freetown where the market is doing a bustling trade. Freetown is thronged with hundreds of refugees from Sierra Leone's rural areas who have fled to the capital to escape the threat of rebel attacks. Despite the danger, local people are just getting on with their lives. Traffic now appears to be moving freely in Freetown after a security clampdown was ordered against rebels who were thought to have sneaked into the city, posing as government soldiers. Roads out of the city are quiet with nearby beaches almost deserted. But it may only be the calm before the storm and the apparent tranquillity could soon be shattered by more violence. Koidu Diamond Mine – Sierra Leone – Collis & Associates

02:31
Mining is an extractive industry and the pressure is to mine and process as soon as possible to achieve maximum profit – how do we make this process more sustainable and better for the environment? The consultancy firm of Collis & Associates are committed to sustainability. They were approached to provide architectural and engineering services for the upgrade of an old diamond mine in Sierra Leone. This posed a dilemma as the infrastructure was erected fast with little thought given to the environment, the life cycle of buildings or the community affected. In this sense, mining is an economic anomaly which functions for a period of time, leaving behind it empty skeletons on scarred land. The firm’s involvement within the building work was limited to typologies from a small switch room, workshops, clinics and community facilities. The appointment of a main contractor saw items and building materials shipped from South Africa, with building having no regard to the immediate context of the site. Following site visits, Collis & Associates proposed an alternative construction technology which would minimise importation of materials and maximise use of local materials and labour while recycling mine waste wherever possible. With these decisions there was reduced construction time, plus a significant reduction in the reliance on a global supply network. Thirty-four building types were designed in 12 months and the building process took 18 months. The buildings were scaled to allow general access to all employees and after the eventual closure of the mine, the buildings will continue to be fully functional for the local community.

Mineral Rape in the DRC

15:56
Grand Theft Congo (2005): The major problem facing Africa is corruption and control of resources. In the DRC, the military is stealing minerals to sell to Western companies. For downloads and more information visit http://www.journeyman.tv/18683/short-films/grand-theft-congo.html At a remote mine in central DRC, workers with torches and pick axes hack at the ruddy earth. They are mining cassiterite, a mineral vital in the production of laptops and mobile phones. But dispersed among the miners are Congolese Government troops -- in plain clothes for the camera -- literally forcing most workers to work at gunpoint. 'The soldiers always steal everything. They even come to shoot people down the mineshafts,' complains Regina Maponda. Western greed for cassiterite is fuelling the boom -- at an airfield near the mine, soldiers jealously guard their loot as it makes it way to Japan and the West. Conflict mining is a curse, and it is difficult to see what the G8 leaders can do. Illegal gold mines operating in Ivory Coast

03:44
(3 Jul 2017) LEADIN Illegal gold mining in Ivory Coast is still widespread in the country's north despite government efforts to control it. Local officials complain too many men and women are joining the continuing gold rush and leaving farms without enough labour. STORYLINE At an illegal mine in Tongon in the far north of Ivory Coast, around fifty kilometres from the border with Burkina Faso, miners have dug a 20 metre shaft into a layer of gold bearing rock. Rocks are hauled to the surface before being pounded into a powder. It's very a labour intensive and sometimes dangerous process. Illegal mining has been blamed for uncontrolled migration between countries in the region, unchecked pollution and for fuelling violence. Miners move around, following the latest gossip of where gold is to be found. Miner Hamed Ouedraogo has come from northern neighbour Burkina Faso: "Often when we are moving about we hear of new mines that have been started and that are people are going there, so we head there too." Although operating without permits, miners have machinery on hand to help them and receive a small salary from the illegal mine's owners, often businessmen working with the help of corrupt local officials. It is something authorities have been trying to stamp out as they encourage international investors into the sector. George Gueu Gombadji, the Prefect of Boundiali region says that it means that agriculture is also suffering as there are fewer men to work the land. "This (illegal gold mining) is causing a major loss off of the nation's riches. It has reached such a scale that the supply of agricultural labourers is drying up as they all go mining instead," he says. Illegal mining took off during the years prior to Ivory Coast's 2011 civil war, with rebels occupying much of the north. While the money doesn't flow into the state's coffers, run-off from the illegal mining pollutes water courses. Ouedraogo says the gold will be sold off wherever it can attract the highest prices: "In Burkina Faso the price is higher, a gramme (of gold) can go up to 30,000 West African francs (51 US dollars)." He says in Ivory Coast the going rate is 12,500 francs (21 US dollars) per gramme. Not far away are the offices of Randgold Resources, a NASDAQ and London stock exchange listed gold mining company. They operate legally, holding an official permit to mine in the area. They operate on an entirely different scale to the illegal miners - the Tongon mine, operated in partnership with the state, comprises two massive open cast mines. According to Randgold's own figures, last year they extracted 260,556 ounces of gold at this mine in Ivory Coast, that is over 7 metric tonnes, generating over 121 (m) million US dollars in profit. Bodiel N'diaye, the company's country director recently gathered journalists to explain why he is unhappy with the impact of the illegal mining. "These people come and set up in areas where they do not have the right to operate. Take our concessions for example, where we have a government licence (to mine). When we come to start working, we can't because these people are occupying the site illegally, they have no authorisation from the supervising ministry. They don't follow the laws," he says. Government efforts to crackdown on the illegal mining have done little to stop the practice. The illegal miners simply move on or across borders briefly before returning. Africa Today - EU continues to lift sanctions on Zimbabwe (P.1)

12:11
The European Union continues to ease sanctions against Zimbabwe after lifting its sanctions on the Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation back in September 2013. After brutal wars in Sierra Leone and Liberia, which were fueled by "blood diamonds" in 2002, the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) was set up. The KPCS certifies the origins of the traded diamonds, assuring consumers that they were not financing war or human rights abuses. The Marange fields in Zimbabwe, which cover about 66,000 hectares is one of the world's largest diamond fields. The export of Zimbabwe's diamond has been a hot political issue with Western countries opposed to the country selling stock piles of its diamonds, and African countries, United Arab Emirates and India supporting the sale. The United States, Canada, Australia, the European Union and their allies in the 76-member Kimberly Process grouping have relentlessly frustrated Zimbabwe's efforts to sell the Marange diamonds on the international market, citing so-called human rights abuses and alleged non-compliance with Kimberly Process certification requirements. Companies listed under the sanctions are believed to be partnered with the government-owned Zimbabwe Mining Development Company, which already exists on the sanction list. Controversially, a Chinese company which is also operating in Marange has been given approval to export rough diamonds from the field. The Zimbabwe government says the sanctions are unjustified and needlessly worsening the plight of ordinary people by undermining the country's economic recovery.
