Primitive Technology: Charcoal
I made a batch of charcoal using the mound method then stored it in baskets for later use. Charcoal is a fuel that burns hotter than the wood it's made from. This is because the initial energy consuming steps of combustion have taken place while making the charcoal driving off the volatile components of the wood (such as water and sap). The result is a nearly pure carbon fuel that burns hotter than wood without smoke and with less flame. Charcoal was primarily a metallurgical fuel in ancient times but was sometimes used for cooking too. To make the charcoal the wood was broken up and stacked in to a mound with the largest pieces in the center and smaller sticks and leaves on the out side. The mound was coated in mud and a hole was left in the top while 8 smaller air holes were made around the base of the mound. A fire was kindled in the top of the mound using hot coals from the fire and the burning process began (the hot coals are being poured in the top using a small pot at 2:38). The fire burned down the inside of the mound against the updraft. I reason that this is a better way to make charcoal as the rising flames have used up the oxygen and prevent the charcoal already made above them from burning while driving out even more volatiles . I watched the air holes at the base of the mound and when the fire had burned right up to each opening I plugged them with mud. Once all 8 holes had be sealed the hole in the top of the mound was sealed with mud and the mound left to cool. From lighting the mound to closing up the holes the whole process took about 4 hours. The next day when the mound was cool to the touch (this can take about 2 days sometimes) I opened the mound. The resulting charcoal was good quality. Some wood near the air entries had burned to ash though these were only small twigs and leaves. This is the reason small brush is put on the out side of the mound, to be burned preferentially to the larger wood on the inside thus protecting the large pieces of charcoal. The charcoal that was made was hard and shiny. When broken open it had the ray structure of the wood preserved. When moving the hand through it the charcoal sounded tinny, like coral on a beach being moved by waves. These are signs of good quality. Bad charcoal is soft, breaks easily and has a muffled sound. I intend to use the charcoal to produce hotter fires than I'm able to with wood alone. From my research, a natural draft furnace using wood (a kiln) can reach a maximum of 1400 c degrees whereas a natural draft furnace using charcoal can reach 1600 c degrees. Achieving high temperatures is necessary for changing material to obtain better technology (e.g. smelting ore into metal). Coal, Steam, and The Industrial Revolution: Crash Course World History #32
Mongols Shirts and Crash Course Posters! http://store.dftba.com/collections/crashcourse In which John Green wraps up revolutions month with what is arguably the most revolutionary of modern revolutions, the Industrial Revolution. While very few leaders were beheaded in the course of this one, it changed the lives of more people more dramatically than any of the political revolutions we've discussed. So, why did the Industrial Revolution happen around 1750 in the United Kingdom? Coal. Easily accessible coal, it turns out. All this, plus you'll finally learn the difference between James Watt and Thomas Newcomen, and will never again be caught telling people that your blender has a 900 Newcomen motor. Inside El Chapo’s Escape Tunnel
Infamous drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, who daringly escaped prison on July 11, utilized a tunnel leading from the only “supermax” maximum-security prison in Mexico, where he'd been held. At least that's the explanation Mexican authorities have given as to how the leader of the Sinaloa cartel escaped prison for the second time. In the aftermath of the escape, VICE News went to Almoloya de Juarez to inspect the exit of the tunnel that “El Chapo" allegedly used, and spoke with an activist and former inmate of Altiplano prison who claims to have discovered flaws in the authorities’ version of events. Harpers Ferry National Historical Park : Deferred Maintenance
The U.S. National Parks Service has a repair backlog of nearly $12 billion. This deferred maintenance figure is a total of the projects that have had outstanding repairs needs for over a year. Almost every single one of the 418 NPS units is affected by this backlog -- here is a story of how it touches Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. For some, Harpers Ferry is a place to hike the trails, to see the rivers. And for some, it's a place of history to come to learn about their past. This is where the first strike against slavery began in the United States. So when I'm walking through Harpers Ferry, I think about what happened here 160 years ago - and what the National Park Service has done to preserve that story. Visitation is extremely important if people aren't coming to the park because of deteriorating conditions and trails, they're not going to be shopping or eating in restaurants. It concerns me when I see wood that is starting to rot, stone that needs to be replaced--buildings that need to be painted. The Lockwood house is one of the most moving places in Harpers Ferry to me. It was built in 1848 for the U.S. Armory. But after the Civil War, it was abandoned. It became the first school that was teaching newly freed slaves in the Shenandoah Valley. But when you walk inside, it's a bit startling - it's a safety issue. And that's why visitors are not permitted to go inside the building to hear the amazing stories that those walls could tell. And that is why preservation is so important - it's almost like a bit of time travel.

Is the world getting better or worse? A look at the numbers | Steven Pinker
Was 2017 really the "worst year ever," as some would have us believe? In his analysis of recent data on homicide, war, poverty, pollution and more, psychologist Steven Pinker finds that we're doing better now in every one of them when compared with 30 years ago. But progress isn't inevitable, and it doesn't mean everything gets better for everyone all the time, Pinker says. Instead, progress is problem-solving, and we should look at things like climate change and nuclear war as problems to be solved, not apocalypses in waiting. "We will never have a perfect world, and it would be dangerous to seek one," he says. "But there's no limit to the betterments we can attain if we continue to apply knowledge to enhance human flourishing." JOAQUIN MURRIETA The Mexican Robin Hood
Hundreds of horse back riders come together every July in Central California to honor a famous Mexican Icon they called "The Mexican Robin Hood" who defended the poor. He encountered racism in the extreme competition of the rough mining camps during the gold rush. This a News story I did that showed the long time tradition celebrated every year by Mexican and Mexican Americans who believed in his cause.

The hacienda blends old world elements and today's luxury details to offer a lifestyle experience unmatched ANYWHERE! Going to the main house you enter an arched doorway (complete with working European door) that leads you to the main courtyard and the most spectacular views of the Coachella Valley you have ever seen. This is just one of six patios. The multi-level outdoor areas and view side pool make this the ultimate estate for large entertaining. Inside you will find details such as exposed beams, lighted niches, 8 fireplaces, separate building living areas, center island kitchen/dining, convertible media room, waterfall shower and because every home needs one, a writers loft/gun tower(really). And don't forget the separate authentic chapel just past the olive orchard. All of this is in the gated community of Royal Carrizo and sits 3000 feet above the desert floor(actually has a Mountain Center address and zip code but is just outside Palm Desert) offering amazing views and cooler temperatures. asking $925,000

Mr. Finnegan has covered a number of wars in Africa, the Balkans, and Central America. He shares some of his experiences, including discussing Apartheid South Africa to illustrate the journalist's role in conveying history. Punahou writer-in-residence William Finnegan is a staff writer for The New Yorker magazine. After working as a freelance writer and war correspondent, Mr. Finnegan became a staff writer for The New Yorker in 1987. An award-winning author of four books, his writing has taken him across continents to examine apartheid in South Africa, drug cartels in Mexico, and a mining billionaire in Australia. World's biggest economies throughout history | The Economist
Time is money: An animated infographic showing the top three economies throughout history. Does China have the world's largest economy? Is China's economy bigger than America's? Time is money–the world's largest economies throughout history. At the start of the Common Era, India was the world’s largest economy, followed by China. The far-flung Roman Empire came a distant third. A thousand years later, it looked almost the same. But third place shifted to Byzantium, in modern-day Turkey. Five hundred years after that, Italy returned, rich from renaissance trade. Over several centuries, other European powers vied for third: initially France, and then Britain. China and India swapped places. After the industrial revolution, the top three economies accounted for less than half of global output. In the 20th century, America dominated. China temporarily fell away. Russia made the top three. As did Japan. Britain dropped down. Now the modern world resembles the distant past: China and India are back, along with a single Western economy. And America’s preeminence is over. China overtakes US as the world's largest economy. The Brothel King: Dennis Hof on Prostitution, Wild West Libertarianism, and "Pimpin' for Paul"
"Nevada's the last of the live and let live states," says Dennis Hof, the self-described "Brothel King" and owner and proprieter of Nevada's Moonlite Bunny Ranch, made famous as the setting for the HBO documentary series, Cathouse (2005-2008). "I don't care if you smoke weed. Don't bother me because I have a safe full of guns and I'm in the sex business." Reason TV's Zach Weissmueller sat down with Hof in his brothel for a wide-ranging interview about sex, prostitution, black markets, politics, and more. Hof acquired the Moonlite Bunny Ranch in 1992 and systematically pushed it into the public eye through a blend of showmanship, attention-seeking, and media outreach he calls the "PT Barnum/Andy Kaufman" school of marketing and publicity. In fact, he claims that Andy Kaufman gave him the initial idea to buy the Bunny Ranch when they partied there together in the late '70s. "In about '78, Kaufman said, 'Dennis, let's buy this place and make it our den,'" says Hof (1:30). Since then, Hof has gone on to acquire six more brothels, giving him a huge share of a national market that only includes 17 total brothels. This is because Nevada is the only state in the U.S. that has legalized prostitution, and only in counties with populations of less than 400,000. This, of course, rules out Clark County, where Las Vegas is located. "It's illegal in Las Vegas, and look what you've got," says Hof. "You've got 2,000 girls a month being arrested. Lots of guys being arrested, lives being ruined... Las Vegas is the sexual cesspool of America." (24:20) He also points to the remarkably high rate of HIV infection among prostitutes in Las Vegas. By contrast, he says, under the state's regime of mandatory STD testing, there has never been a documented case of HIV among licensed workers in Nevada's brothels. Watch the whole interview above to hear Hof talk more about what it's like to run some of the country's only legal brothels, as well as stories about his run-ins with Sen. Harry Reid (7:10), his advice for Anthony Weiner and Elliot Spitzer (17:45), and why he started the group "Pimpin' for [Ron] Paul" (18:17). Scroll down for downloadable versions. Produced by Zach Weissmueller. Shot by Sharif Matar and Will Neff. Approximately 27 minutes. Subscribe to Reason TV's YouTube channel to receive automatic notification when new material goes live.
