Rio Tinto Moving Forward With New $2.2 Billion "Intelligent" Mine in the Pilbara
On the agenda for Rio Tinto in 2018 is moving forward with a $2.2 billion “intelligent” iron ore mine in the Pilbara. The proposed plan is to fully integrate advanced robotics, driverless trucks and driverless trains into the Koodaideri Mine. Rio Tinto’s head of iron ore Chris Salisbury has confirmed that feasibility studies are already underway to demonstrate the economics of the plan. "We will bring all our technologies into a single place with a mine that is purpose-built to adapt those technologies.” "We are calling it our intelligent mine." Rio anticipates that the Koodaideri mine will produce 40 million tonnes per year by 2021, though this could grow to 70 million tonnes or more. This will add to the 300 million tonnes of iron ore Rio Tinto already extracts from its Australian mines. The Koodaideri “intelligent” mine fits into Rio’s strategy of producing a higher quality of ore, which China is increasingly preferring. Rio Tinto has highlighted the growing price gap between high grade and low grade ore. "We've seen the discount grow from 30 per cent in the first three quarters to over 40 per cent," Chris Salisbury said. Rio already runs an operations centre in Perth which controls many activities on its mines from 1,500km away. It is unknown right now as to how many employees the Koodaideri mine will support and when construction will begin. https://www.iseekplant.com.au/blog/rio-tinto-moving-forward-new-2-2-billion-mine-pilbara/ Source: Rio Tinto, Fairfax, AFR

The typical magnetite iron ore concentrate has less than 0.1% phosphorus, 3--7% silica and less than 3% aluminium. Sulfur can be removed from ores by roasting and washing. Roasting oxidizes sulfur to form sulfur dioxide which either escapes into the atmosphere or can be washed out. In warm climates it is possible to leave pyritic ore out in the rain. Thebined action of rain, bacteria, and heat oxidize the sulfides to sulfates, which are water soluble (Turner , pp. 77). However, historically (at least), iron sulfide (iron pyrite FeS2), though amon iron mineral, has not been used as an ore for the production of iron metal. Natural weathering was also used in Sweden. The same process, at geological speed, results in the gossan limonite ores. The key economic parameters for magnetite ore being economic are the crystallinity of the magnetite, the grade of the iron within the banded iron formation host rock, and the contaminant elements which exist within the magnetite concentrate. The size and strip ratio of most magnetite resources is irrelevant as a banded iron formation can be hundreds of meters thick, extend hundreds of kilometers along strike, and can easilye to more than three billion or more tonnes of contained ore. Careful control of phosphorus can be of great benefit in casting operations. Phosphorus depresses the liquidus temperature, allowing the iron to remain molten for longer and increases fluidity. The addition of 1% can double the distance molten iron will flow (Rostoker Bronson , p. 22). The maximum effect

The study baseline resource was 139Mt of Inferred Resource. The predicted total production over the mine life is approximately 107Mt, yielding 27 182kt (kilotonne) Fe and 349kt V2O5. Golden West Resources Ltd: Thepany has announced its initial iron ore reserve for the C3, C4, Joyners Find and Bowerbird deposits of 69.2Mt at 60.3% Fe. Golden West Resources says that the reserve creates a potential mine life of 10 years at a production rate of approximately 7Mtpa. It was proposed that these deposits be mined in stages with initial production of 1Mt for stage I before going to a full scale production of 10Mtpa in stage III. Winmar Resources Ltd: There was a 70% increase in Inferred Resources from its June estimate to 241.6Mt at 54.3% Fe for the Winmar deposit at thepany's Hamersley Iron project. Iron ores are rocks and minerals from which metallic iron can be economically extracted. The ores are usually rich in iron oxides and vary in color from dark grey, bright yellow, deep purple, to rusty red. The iron itself is usually found in the form of magnetite (Fe 3O 4, 72.4% Fe), hematite (Fe 2O 3, 69.9% Fe), goethite (FeO(OH), 62.9% Fe), limonite (FeO(OH).n(H2O)) or siderite (FeCO3, 48.2% Fe). Ores containing very high quantities of hematite or magnetite (greater than ~60% iron) are known as "natural ore" or "direct shipping ore", meaning they can be fed directly into iron-making blast furnaces. Iron ore is the raw material used to make pig iron, which is one of the main raw materials to make steel. 98% of the mined iron ore is used to make steel. Indeed, it has been argued that iron ore is "more integral to the global economy than any other commodity, except perhaps oil". Surveyors on board noted the baron state of the hill and subsequently discovered that the iron content was as high as 66%. Bog iron was widely sought in colonial North America. Lake Massapoag in Massachusetts was drawn down by deepening the outlet channel in a search for bog iron.[1] The Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site, on the Saugus River in Saugus, Massachusetts operated between and . The site contains a museum and several reconstructed buildings.[2] The success of the Saugus Iron Works, and the rapid depletion of the region's natural bog iron, led them to send prospectors out into the surrounding countryside. In they bought 1,600 acres (6.5 km2) of land which covered areas that are now Concord, Acton, and Sudbury. They set up a large production facility in Concord, Massachusetts along the Assabet River with dams, ponds, watercourses and hearths, but by the natural bog iron there had also been exhausted, and the land was sold for farming.[3] The addition of phosphorus has a down side. At concentrations higher than 0.2% iron bes increasingly cold short, or brittle at low temperatures. Cold short is especially important for bar iron. World consumption of iron ore grows 10% per annum[citation needed] on average with the main consumers being China, Japan, Korea, the United States and the European Union. Over the last 40 years, iron ore prices have been decided in closed-door negotiations between the small handful of miners and steelmakers which dominate both spot and contract markets. Traditionally, the first deal reached between these two groups sets a benchmark to be followed by the rest of the industry.[2] Iron is one of the three naturally magnetic elements; the others are cobalt and nickel. Iron is the most magnetic of the three. The mineral magnetite (Fe Pure iron is a soft, grayish-white metal. Although iron is amon element, pure iron is almost never found in nature. The only pure iron known to exist naturallyes from fallen meteorites. Most iron is found in minerals formed by thebination of iron with other elements. Iron oxides are the mostmon. Those minerals near the surface of the earth that have the highest iron content are known as iron ores and are minedmercially. Phosphorus is a deleterious contaminant because it makes steel brittle, even at concentrations of as little as 0.6%. Phosphorus cannot be easily removed by fluxing or smelting, and

How Coal Is Mined and Refined - Top Coal Mining Spots in the World - Documentaries. Welcome to DOCUMENTARIES - home of the best documentary movies and documentary films. Coal mining is the process of extracting coal from the ground. Coal is valued for its energy content, and, since the 1880s, has been widely used to generate electricity. Steel and cement industries use coal as a fuel for extraction of iron from iron ore and for cement production. In the United Kingdom and South Africa, a coal mine and its structures are a colliery, a coal mine a pit, and the above-ground structures the pit head. In Australia, "colliery" generally refers to an underground coal mine. In the United States, "colliery" has been used to describe a coal mine operation but nowadays the word is not commonly used. Coal mining has had many developments over the recent years, from the early days of men tunnelling, digging and manually extracting the coal on carts, to large open cut and long wall mines. Mining at this scale requires the use of draglines, trucks, conveyors, hydraulic jacks and shearers.
