Coal Mining's Environmental Impact | From The Ashes
In Appalachia, coal companies blow the tops off of mountains to get at the coal. The damage this does to the surrounding environment and water supply is devastating. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe About From The Ashes: From the Ashes captures Americans in communities across the country as they wrestle with the legacy of the coal industry and what its future should be in the current political climate. From Appalachia to the West’s Powder River Basin, the film goes beyond the rhetoric of the “war on coal” to present compelling and often heartbreaking stories about what’s at stake for our economy, health, and climate. Dust Generation during Dumper Movement | Iron Ore Mine
This is a short video which I recorded during my visit to an Iron Ore Mine in the Karnataka region of India, showing dust generation due to Dumper movement, a typical scenario of an iron ore mine in India. Dust generation is major environmental problem faced by people working & living near mining areas, suitable suppression methods are required for controlling them. Water sprinkling is a solution to some extent, but dust generation is not arrested completely. Also a lot of fuel and manpower is wasted in operating water tankers for the purpose. Suitable bio-degradable chemicals (mixed with water) options need to be explored to reduce the dependency on water for dust suppression, offering better results. Goa's Mines Bleed Its Environment Dry
Unmonitored mining has boomed in Goa in recent years and has had dire effects on the environment. The Goa mining industry is thriving, but its impact on nature and the local population is disastrous. 8% of the state surface is already being mined, mostly to extract iron ore that is exported to China. Over 825 mining sites exist throughout the state, and a large number of projects have been given government's clearance. The very large scale and intensive nature of mining exploitation is a serious challenge to Goa's fragile ecosystem. Indeed, 90 % of Goa's mining leases are within notified wildlife sanctuaries and reserve forests. Large areas of fertile agricultural lands have also been diverted for mining. Huge quantities of mining particles are deposited in rivers, contaminating water sources. Devidas Gaonkar, our Community Correspondent in Goa, has been personally affected by the issue. Belonging to a tribal community, he has witnessed how mining exploitation has encroached on natural resources that are so crucial to sustain life in Goa. His village has been flooded recently because of this excessive mining in the area. In his video, Devidas gives us a powerful and articulate description on how mining is impacting the environment. Deforestation due to mining activity is causing soil erosion and siltation, increasing the risk of flooding and impacting ground water, potentially causing water shortage. With his video, Devidas is adding his voice to the chorus of activists who incessantly warn the government against the risk of excessive mining exploitation. Numerous common people like Devidas have also been courageously protesting mining in the streets and blocking vehicles passing through their villages. Devidas wishes his video to similarly raise awareness, with the hope that the government will soon put a halt to large-scale unmonitored mining, which is proving fatal for Goa's vegetation, water and biodiversity. Conditional Nod For Mining In Goa
Wwatch: "Kanhaiya Kumar's Full Speech at JNU Campus" → https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_df-48pHzCA -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Finally there is some respite for iron ore miners and steel-makers. After an 18-month long wait the Supreme Court has partially lifted the mining ban in Goa. But in a bid to curb illegal mining, the apex court has capped the output at 20 million tonnes a year. While the move will brighten the prospects of domestic players like Sesa Sterlite, it will also help India regain its lost share in the export market. A final call will be taken after a court-appointed panel submits its report on the environmental impact in the next six months.

Environmental NGO, Goa Foundation, has petitioned the Supreme Court appointed panel on capping iron ore mining in Goa to fix the upper limit at 5 million tonnes per annum. The six-member panel of experts is in Goa and will do an environment impact assessment (EIA) study to fix the annual iron ore excavation ceiling for Goa. Goa Foundation which made its submissions to the committee at the State secretariat yesterday has also urged a ban on export of the iron ore from Goa. The panel includes ecologist Dr C R Babu, geologist Dr S C Dhiman, mineralogist Prof B K Mishra, forest officer S Parmeshwarappa and the Goa principal secretary Parimal Rai. They will be in Goa until Friday, January 24. The panel held meetings with officials of 10 different state government departments connected to mining on Thursday at which Dr Claude Alvares of Goa Foundation, who is the petitioner in the Supreme Court case which led to the ban on mining was also invited. The panel is expected to return to Goa on January 27, when heads of all the department have been directed to submit all relevent mining data. Meanwhile, managing director of Sesa Sterlite Ltd, P K Mukherjee also met with members of the panel. Mukherjee told the media that the panel has asked his company to make suggestions in writing. He indicated that Sesa will not put a figure for the annual cap but suggest that the panel look at it holistically and take into account all inter-connected issues including the resource reserves, the infrastructure available and the impact on environment, besides the impact on the economy as well as individual and corporate investments made in the sector.

Hundreds march against plans to build open-pit mining project to extract iron ore
Several hundred people marched in Uruguay's capital Montevideo on Friday against plans to build a massive open-pit mining project to extract iron ore. Protesters chanted, clapped and held up large banners as they walked down Montevideo's main avenue towards Independence Plaza. The Uruguayan parliament weeks ago approved a controversial mining law that will enable the private mining company, Aratiri, to build five open-pit mines in the small South American country. Opponents of the project say they're concerned about its environmental impact on the soil and the use of chemicals and explosives. "I was born and raised in the countryside. I was born in the zone where today they want to build the Aratiri mine. We're talking about destroying gold (comparing their agricultural land to gold). Our food is like our gold," said Alvaro Jaume, a demonstrator who lives in area where the Aratiri mine project is planned to be built. According to figures from Aratiri, they will export an average of 18 (m) million tons of iron ore per year, which would make Uruguay the world's eighth largest exporter of the mineral. "This project is really a monstrous project," said Alfredo Dante, a resident of the area where Aratiri mine project is planned to be built. Dante called the project "highly destructive" because of the large number of chemical explosive he said will be used for the ore extraction. "For a country like Uruguay, this project is crazy," he added. According to Aratiri, the iron will be extracted by magnetic means without chemicals. The mining project will cover the departments of Durazno, Florida, Lavalleja, Treinta y Tres and Rocha. It is the largest project of its kind in South America. Aratiri is part of the Zamin Ferrous multinational group, with corporate headquarters and trading operations in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, according to Zamin group's website. In the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union the world became aware of the devastating impact on the environment and on the health of the people by brown coal and uranium mining in the former East Germany and Czechoslovakia. SAG/SDAG Wismut was a uranium mining company in East Germany during the time of the cold war. It produced a total of 230,400 tonnes of uranium between 1947 and 1990 and made East Germany the fourth largest producer of uranium ore in the world at the time. It was the largest single producer of uranium ore in the entire sphere of control of the USSR. In 1991 after German reunification it was transformed into the Wismut GmbH company, owned by the Federal Republic of Germany, which is now responsible for the restoration and environmental cleanup of the former mining and milling areas. The head office of SDAG Wismut / Wismut GmbH is in Chemnitz-Siegmar. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wismut_(mining_company) Original title: Black Triangle A film by Ron Orders © 1991, Licensed by Cinecontact Subscribe to wocomoHISTORY: https://goo.gl/oXDoxY Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/wocomo

The expert committee appointed by Supreme Court has recommended that the annual extraction of iron ore should be enhanced to 37 million tonnes per year. Ministry of environment and forest has sought comments from various departments. Presently Supreme Court has put annual capping of 20 million tonnes of iron ore productions. The Macro Environment Impact Assessment study on ceiling of annual excavation of iron ore from the state of Goa has been submitted by the expert committee. The committee has recommended that earlier assessed extraction rate of 20 million tonnes per annum should be enhanced to 30 MTPA and after reviewing the macro EIA of the enhanced extraction rate by the state, the same may be further enhanced to 37 MTPA as the upper limit predicated. Committee in his report stated that the earlier assessed extraction rate of 20 million tone per annum should be enhanced to 30 MTPA. This level of extraction will take care of the demand of all stake holders, environmental requirements and human interest and needs. Thereafter ,at an appropriate stage the macro EIA of the enhanced extraction rate that is 30 MTPA must be evaluated. If the available data pertaining to environment, ecology and logistics favour then the enhanced extraction rate may further be increased to 37 MTPA by the state in accordance with the upper limit predicated by sustainability model. Committee had submitted its report to ministry of environment and forest. The same forwarded to Goa government and sought its comment. Based on the report, Supreme court will decide about the annual capping of extraction of iron ore. www.prudentmedia.in #Prudent Media Goa

Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa on a proposed iron mine in the Penokee Hills
In 2013, Wisconsin state legislators passed a law that exempted the iron mining industry from environmental protections and greatly reduced the ability of citizens to voice their concerns about the impacts of iron mining on the health of their land and water. The Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Tribal nation is located at the bottom of the Penokee Hills, between a proposed open-pit iron mine and Lake Superior. This is what they had to say to legislators about how an open-pit iron mine would affect their land and water. Flourishing Mines Devastates Farmland
Mines in Goa destroy local tribal communities' livelihood, while benefiting a few corporations Devidas Gaonkar, our correspondent from Goa is a tribal youth whose family earns its livelihood from farming. These days Devidas's family and the rest of his community members are facing a serious food crisis as their farm output has come down drastically. The reason behind this drop in yield is that effluents from the mines in their area have been washed down to their farms, killing the soil's nutrients. There are over a hundred iron ore and bauxite mines in Devidas's district. These mines are on the hilltops. In monsoon rain water washes down mineral particles from the mines to the farmland below the hills where Devidas's community grows paddy. This then forms layers of black silt in the paddy field, choking the pores on the soil and cutting the supply of oxygen. As a result, the crops fail and the community faces a season of starvation. Uncontrolled mining and environmental degradation have been some of the burning issues in Goa for years and Devidas has been leading his community in this fight against the polluting mining companies. He says, "Mines in Goa are controlled by a handful of rich families who make millions of rupees every year. But for people in my community mining only means destruction of livelihood. The crop failure is actually forcing us to quit farming and become laborers in the mines". Currently the government is in the process of formulating a new mining policy in Goa that will stop all illegal mining activity and restore the environment. But Devidas says that the policy must also include compensation to all the farmers who have suffered repeated crop failures, and de-silting of the farmland which is the only source of livelihood for his community. Will Lithium Shortage Kill The EV Industry?
First I thought we should talk about where you can find lithium today. The truth is it’s likely on your body right now, you may be holding it in your hand, or you’re looking directly at it. But you might be surprised to know it’s also used in things like tools, aerospace equipment, military applications and backup storage for our Electric grid. And of course, Tesla’s and other electric cars // Looking to buy a Tesla S or X? Use our referral code and instantly receive $1,000 off and Free Supercharging! (limited) Get Started - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9QapXri9iY // It is so good for batteries that 39% of all Lithium production goes towards battery production. So what is Lithium anyway? Lithium itself is a soft, silvery-white alkali metal. It is the lightest metal and the lightest solid element. Like all alkali metals, lithium is highly reactive and flammable. So this isn’t something you’d want just laying around your house. Especially if you have a toddler running around like I do... So Lithium is a metal so it must be mined right, like copper? Well, not exactly. It’s true lithium can be mined from rocks but mostly it’s found in brine pools. Lithium is also present in seawater but there aren’t any commercially viable methods of extracting it at this time As an aside when you see a meme floating around the internet showing a giant mine where lithium comes from, it’s a lie. As of 2017, most of the world's lithium production is in South America, where lithium-containing brine is extracted from underground pools and concentrated by solar evaporation. The standard extraction technique is to evaporate water from brine. Each batch takes from 18 to 24 months. With so much demand for lithium it’s a fair question to ask... Are Tesla and others doomed? Well…not really The US Geological Survey’s report for 2017 shows that "Worldwide lithium production increased by an estimated 12% in 2016 in response to increased lithium demand for battery applications. Production in Argentina increased nearly 60%, primarily owing to a new brine operation; the leading Argentine producer also increased production. A producer in Chile reported that its production rose by 20%. Two small Australian spodumene operations, one new and one inactive since 2013, planned to begin commercial concentrate production by year end. Worldwide lithium production capacity was reported to be 49,400 tons in 2015; capacity utilization was estimated to be 64% in 2015 and 71% in 2016. Based on average projections by producers and industry analysists of about 14% growth worldwide, consumption of lithium in 2016 is projected to be about 37,800 tons, up from 33,300 tons in 2015. So the trend is going up, but when you look at the overall picture you find that owing to continuing exploration, lithium resources have increased substantially worldwide. Identified lithium resources in the United States, from continental brines, geothermal brines, hectorite, oil field brines, and pegmatites, have been revised to 6.9 million tons. Identified lithium resources in other countries have been revised to approximately 40 million tons. Identified lithium resources in Argentina and Bolivia are about 9 million tons each and in major producing countries are Australia, more than 2 million tons; Chile, more than 7.5 million tons; and China, approximately 7 million tons. Canada’s lithium resources are about 2 million tons. Congo (Kinshasa), Russia, and Serbia have resources of about 1 million tons each. Lithium resources in Brazil and Mexico are approximately 200,000 tons each and Austria, and Zimbabwe have more than 100,000 tons each. Beyond just producing more lithium, companies like Tesla have focused on creating a closed-loop battery recycling program since as early as 2011. So while Tesla drivetrains are rated to go 1M miles, and the batteries will likely last to last north of 350K miles, once the cars do get turned in, Tesla isn’t going to just throw away those precious metals. If you’re an investor in companies reliant on lithium for their batteries such as Tesla, Apple, Google, or any other company making electronics today, you shouldn’t worry about the supply chain. We’ve got a long road ahead of us and probably by the time we need to worry about a shortage of Lithium we’ll have a new way to make batteries that are even better. // Join Our Community on Patreon! This report investigates what is being named the biggest disaster in Brazil's mining history. A horror mudslide swept through the towns and villages in the Gualaxo River Valley, destroying homes, businesses and taking the lives of 19 people. A tailings dam, holding back more than 50 million cubic metres of mining waste collapsed, unleashing a wave of mud several metres high. "The mud dragged me down, I would come up, it would take me down again... I screamed but nobody answered", remembers Priscila Barros, who was pulled four kilometers under the deadly slurry. The mud, containing lead, arsenic and other toxic chemicals, continued down river all the way to the Atlantic coast 600km away. "This mud wave has killed anything that was alive in these water systems", explains Marilene Ramos of the Brazilian Environment Authority. Now Brazilian police are seeking the arrest of 12 of Samarco's executives for negligent homicide and crimes against the environment. "A dam doesn't break by chance. There is repeated, continual negligence in the actions of a company owned by Vale and BHP", says prosecutor Carlos Eduardo Pinto. CD8 DFL Candidates On Mining And Environment
All five candidates who are seeking the DFL endorsement for congress in Minnesota’s 8th district held a forum at the Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College in Cloquet. The candidates are Kirsten Hagen Kennedy, Michelle Lee, Jason Metsa, Leah Phifer and Joe Radinovich. Aaron Brown at MinnesotaBrown.com writes "The only meaningful policy difference among the five candidates is over mining and environmental regulations." "To recap, Metsa backs all mining and has supported Republican-backed environmental deregulations. Radinovich and Kennedy support allowing the existing environmental processes to move forward and broadly support mining. Phifer supports iron mining but opposes the current plans of nonferrous mines because of the lack of up-front financial assurances. And Lee supports iron mining but broadly opposes nonferrous mining due to the environmental risks. It’s pretty much a spectrum of beliefs on the DFL side." More text at http://minnesotabrown.com/2018/04/another-forum-national-coverage-mn8.html Rep. Rick Nolan (DFL) has decided not to run for re-election, setting off a scramble for the party endorsement.
