Mining Jobs TV Episode 3 - Unskillled & Entry Level Mining Jobs

MINING JOBS TV Episode 3: Unskillled & Entry Level Mining Jobs Brought to you by www.miningresumes.com - Kick-start your mining career today and email us at [email protected] or call Mining Resumes on 1300 737 863 Welcome to Episode 3 of Mining Jobs TV. Hi my name is Matt and I will be speaking to you today about unskilled and entry level jobs in the Australian mining industry. Mining Jobs TV is a FREE online TV channel presenting regular episodes where we will discuss mining jobs and tips that will help you to secure a job in the industry. You may have probably heard the stories about a friend of a friend who is earning over $100,000 a year on a mine somewhere in Western Australia or Queensland and wondered how you could get a mining job too. Entry level or unskilled jobs, like trade assistants or plant operators are hard to get now as every man and his dog are applying for them. The best way to get these jobs would be to move out to the little mining towns and live there and register with all the labour hire companies, there are hundreds of them. Trades people like fitters, welders, boilermakers and electricians still have a fairly good chance of picking up work on mining sites. If you don't have a trade, doing a rigging or scaffolding course would give you a good chance at getting a job, the courses are only about 4 weeks long, but they are fairly expensive. Other unskilled or basic jobs available include cleaners, laundry workers and kitchen hands which is not difficult if you have hospitality training and experience. Talking to people who are currently working on mining sites can be a big help, especially if you have no previous experience or qualifications. It would be even better if you could get in contact with expats from your own country who are working on mining sites. They can let you know who to call and what you need to do. If you are inexperienced and unqualified you need to be fit and ready for physical labour. The work will be very repetitive and routine based with long 12 hour days, so you really need to be mentally prepared, as well as physically. Some mines will have a very high turnover of workers. This is because many people go to work on the mines not knowing what to expect. Because there can be such a high turnover, you may not start earning big money straight away, although your wages won't be small either. Once you've proved yourself to be a reliable worker, your wages should increase. Most mining companies will run police checks, as well as drug and alcohol tests. Even though there are wet mess areas on-site where workers can unwind and drink alcohol, they do have to drink in moderation and be fit-for-work before their shift starts Shutdowns are exactly what the name suggests. Every now and then mining sites need to shut down for upgrades, maintenance or repairs and they usually hire people temporarily to work during shut downs. A lot of the work is unskilled and doesn't last very long, so it's great for backpackers who want to keep on travelling and don't want to make a full-time commitment. It's also a great way to get your foot in the door and gain valuable on-site experience. To do certain mining jobs you will need to get licences and training, or 'tickets' as they are more commonly known. There are lots of different types of tickets depending on what type of work you're going to do. Some tickets can be very expensive and mines in different states require different tickets, so you really need to do your research before you start spending money on courses. Don't think that just because you're female that the mining companies and recruiters won't consider you. The mining industry in Australia is becoming increasingly gender neutral. It's not just cooking and cleaning jobs either on offer for women either; more and more women are working on Australian mining sites, and in some cases, companies even prefer women for certain jobs. For example, a popular job for women on mining sites is driving a dump truck because research has shown that women are easier on the multi-million dollar equipment yet still get the job done. It's most important to ensure you have the resume professionally worded and designed to stand out from your competitors. We highly recommended Mining Resumes to prepare your resume as they are the industry leaders in resume preparation for clients seeking jobs in the mining and oil & gas industry. They can be contacted via phone on 1300 RESUME or have a look at their website miningresumes.com with package details and samples browse that demonstrate their quality and experience. Australian mining brings wave of riches

Thousands of tradespeople commute from Perth by plane, working 12-hour shifts on 24-hour-a-day mining operations. Even the newest qualified earn well over $100,000 a year, but the money has consequences: In towns near mines, prices for everything from property to services are high. Al Jazeera's Andrew Thomas reports from Western Australia.

Employers say they can't compete with big paying mine jobs

The resources boom leaves other industries feeling the pinch.
The number of foreign workers in Australia will shock you

05:07
FULL SPEECH As an Australian nationalist, I make no apologies for being strong on jobs for Australians first, and that definitely includes apprenticeships. Labor and the coalition on the other hand have quite literally opened the floodgates to foreign workers on visa schemes that have sold out the unemployed and the under-unemployed right across this country. Labor sold out workers in this country by establishing a little-known category called the 400 visa. It was a category that had very little oversight and that gave approval to foreign workers, in as little as 24 hours, to come and take Australian jobs. Hundreds of thousands of workers were employed under the 400 visa category, costing long-term unemployed Australians and university graduates finishing their studies a chance of employment. We had the 457 visa program, where, again under Labor, the floodgates were opened to foreigners to come and take hundreds of thousands of Australian jobs. When Labor lost government in 2013, they were letting 130,000 foreign workers into Australia to take jobs like ship's engineers, ship's officers, radio journalists, magistrates, park rangers, zookeepers, and flight attendants. They are just some of the jobs Labor allowed to go to foreigners. Thankfully, the number of foreign workers on the 457 visa program dropped by 60,000 last year. One Nation was largely responsible for cuts to over 200 of those job categories, some of which I mentioned before. I also note that ACTU Secretary Sally McManus said in July this year that there are 1.4 million visa holders with working rights in Australia. That's disgusting. I have no doubt that these people are hard workers, but the point of my disgust comes down to Australians wanting a job. They have to compete with over one million overseas workers. Both Labor and the coalition have hoodwinked voters in this country. They talk tough on jobs, but they are quietly undermining the unemployed and the future youth, who will one day join the search for a job in Australia. I want to bring to the Senate's attention another real problem that both Labor and the coalition have failed to recognise. The Minister for Jobs and Industrial Relations, Kelly O'Dwyer, last year admitted in a Financial Review interview that 400,000 ABNs were issued to people on visas who are not allowed to work in this country. Australians find that to be so typical of government departments—they don't talk to each other. So, on top of the 1.4 million work visas issued to foreigners, we have a further 400,000 taking jobs from Aussies under the guise of small-business ownership. I note this matter of public importance also highlights the need to protect local manufacturers and Australian grade steel. It's a bit bloody tough to protect Australian grade steel when the Greens, supported by Labor, are constantly trying to shut down mining in this country. You see, Australian-grade steel requires Australian coal, particularly the high-quality coal from my home state of Queensland, along with the high-grade iron ore from my One Nation colleague's home state of Western Australia. When I stayed in camp with 800 miners in Moranbah only a few weeks ago, I learned that the majority of Central Queensland coal mines are producing coking coal, which is one of two key ingredients for Australian-grade steel. Australian coking coal is mixed with Western Australian iron ore to form the best steel in the world. That's why we're exporting these two commodities to countries like China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. They want their bridges and buildings to stand the test of time. But, if the Greens and Labor team up again at the next election with their mutual preference deals, we'll be thrust back to building straw-and-mud homes. The key to using Australian-grade steel and protecting local manufacturers is to stop demonising coal and other mining throughout this country. As for Senator Cameron's approach to my policy on getting apprenticeships in this country, I've done more for the youth of this nation in apprenticeship schemes than Labor have ever done. If it means that rural and regional areas get the chance for their youth to get into apprenticeship schemes then so be it.

There are also opportunities in administrative, human resources and management positions together with numerous trade related opportunities such as Trades Assistant, Boilermakers, Carpenters, Welders, Electricians and Plumbers. As you are probably aware mining jobs are achievable yet very competitive. It is not unusual for HR Managers to receive 500 or 1000 plus resumes for an advertised vacancy ... so it's most important to ensure you have the resume professionally worded and designed to stand out from your competitors. A talented Resume Writer will be skilled in selling your skills and wording the document in a way that includes all important key words. This will give you the best chance of getting one of these jobs and they will also see you are serious about a career in mining due to the efforts you have made in presenting a polished document that clearly states what you have to offer. Many Australians want to know what type of entry level jobs are available in the mining industry that don't require a trade qualification. Both men and women are sought after by mining companies offering jobs such as Cleaner, Utilities, Trades Assistant, Service Crew, Catering, Kitchen Hand, Utilities and Laundry Work. Some of these jobs will require previous experience in areas such as cleaning, catering and hospitality but don't necessarily require previous experience working on mine sites. The main skills and attributes the mining companies are looking for include: - An understanding and commitment to workplace safety - Willingness to travel or work away from home for extended periods - Ability to complete additional courses or training - Strong work ethic and willingness to work 12 hour shifts - Flexible and adaptable approach to work - Capacity to work unsupervised and as part of a team - Punctual, reliable - High level of physical health and fitness - Willingness to undertake drug and alcohol testing as mine sites are focused on a high level of safety and you cannot be under the influence of these substances when working on site You may be wondering, how do I find out about these jobs? Mining jobs are all advertised on the careers pages of the major mining companies such as BHP, Rio Tinto and the Compass Group. You can find the companies through Google Search or email us and we will happily provide an up to date list for you. Mining jobs are also advertised on sites such as seek.com.au which is the main job search site in Australia. You can find the jobs by searching under the mining industry section and by typing key words such Dump Truck which will display all the current jobs available relating to dump truck driving. I hope that you have found this episode helpful and I look forward to talking to you again in Episode 2 where I will provide an insight into mining jobs available and where to find them. How to get into the mines - Tickets

05:43
My experience getting into the mines. I used my trade qualification and applied to the National Apprenticeships Program https://nationalapprenticeships.com.au/ If your not a tradesperson, the video still applies to you as i think these are the minimum tickets to get into the mines, unless you know somebody your going to need tickets. Once you get out there its very easy to get into other areas of mining just by talking to people in the pub (wet mess its called). 3 main tickets i recommend for starting are Confined Spaces, Working at heights, and EWP below 11m - cheaper than the high risk ticket but its still an EWP ticket so you can say you can have one. Construction safety white card as well would be good, its a cheap one to do. I did my confined spaces and working at heights at a place called Skills on safety at tweed heads. http://www.skillsonsafety.com.au/ you'll be able to do most of the tickets you need at this place. The other place ive done alot of tickets and recommend is major training at yatla. www.major.com.au

Wanna Make $65 an Hour? Become a Blue Collar Apprentice

03:02
Brandon Archilla, a former barber and truck driver, is now on his way to an all-expenses paid path that will lead him to a six-figure salary. He's one of 525 students getting paid to learn a trade at a five-year plumbing apprenticeship program in New York City, run by Plumbers Local Union 1 in Queens. Competition for the program is stiff, and demand is high. Archilla was one of thousands who literally lined up in the street when applications became available. ‘I waited on line for three days, slept on the street,’ said Archilla. ‘About a year later they called me to get in, which is probably the best thing that’s happened to me.’ As part of the program, Archilla gets paid $14 an hour to attend school and work under supervision. At the end of five years, he will earn more than $65 an hour as a journeyman plumber, and walk away with an Associates Degree in Science from The State University of New York’s Empire State College. The best thing about it? Archilla pays absolutely nothing for the training. Tuition is free. ‘We all know that college isn’t for everybody. We call our program the other four year degree,’ said Brent Booker, Secretary-Treasurer of North America’s Building Trades Unions. ‘You get skills training, you earn while you learn.’ The federal government has declared this as the first ever National Apprenticeship Week, and the North American Building Trades Union is hosting open houses in more than 15 cities this week, to raise awareness about apprenticeship programs. I Love Farm Jobs (farms work in Australia)

09:37
If you wanna try the farm life, you'd better check this video out before! Hopefully it will give you an idea of what picking veggies and fruits means to obtain a Visa means. From start of the day, hostel life, travel by car, picking in the field, working conditions... You name it. Working for 3 months in a farm (as well as in a fishing boat or in the Outback mines) is the only way to obtain a Second Working Holiday Visa in Australia (not to be confused with a regular working Visa). Choose wisely where to spend this period, because some area are incredible isolated. Normally the ease of the jobs and the wages are directly proportional to the distance from any crowd area or attraction. This means "the more you're isolated" than "the more you get paid". Of course this is not always true, so always check the average feedback about a place before going to spend three months of your life in the middle of nothing! Said that, good luck buddy! Hello to every fruit picker in Mildura, Victoria (where this video was produced). PS: Following I posted all the places where I work with a personal review. Hope you find this helpful. MILDURA ** out of ***** (closest farm area to Melbourne, be careful to scams) CHILDERS **** out of ***** (small Queensland's town with probably around 30 houses, but more than 6 pubs) BUNDABERG *** out of ***** (if you like Rhum, you'll love this country town) CARNARVON ** OUT OF ***** (literally in the middle of nothing but outback sand) DENMARK **** out of ***** (a hippy place for hippies persons... LOVE IT... Easy surf for ideal for beginners) MARGARET RIVER ******************* out of ***** (if I had the chance I'll move there: picking grapes for 30$/hour for 5 hours a day and surfing the rest of the time... You need a Car in order to enjoy this little coast town, otherwise forget the surf :)

Innovation and drones in Australian mining

01:01
The Australian minerals industry's latest ad in its Making the Future Possible campaign, promoting the industry’s use of innovation including drone technology. Australia’s world-class mining workforce is the result of industry innovation, attraction of talented employees and investment in employee skills and training. Innovation is central to maintaining Australia’s comparative advantage in mining and helps drive high-value, high-wage jobs in a range of scientific and highly-skilled professional occupations. Drones are important to the minerals sector’s environmental, cultural heritage, safety and productivity performance including: • monitoring turtle nesting sites • improving road safety by monitoring traffic, road conditions and hazards and inspecting overhead cranes, towers and roofs of tall buildings to avoid working at height • making it faster to gather more information about mine sites, saving millions of dollars when compared with using planes for survey work • mapping and digitally recording areas of Indigenous cultural heritage.

Geologists examine and record the structure and make-up of the earth and associated materials, such as rocks and fossils.
