The Grateful Dead - Ripple (Studio Version)

04:14
Link to the picture: http://thingstolookathigh.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/alice-in-wonderland-trippy.png Robert Hunter, wrote this song in 1970 in London in the same afternoon he wrote "Brokedown Palace" and "To Lay Me Down" (reputedly also drinking an entire bottle of retsina in the process). The song debuted August 18, 1970 at Fillmore West in San Francisco. Like many folk songs, "Ripple" addresses itself as a song and an instrument of the performers' emotional expression. Several lines throughout the song echo the 23rd Psalm of the Bible. Trip hard and good, motherfuckers.

Ripple - Grateful Dead (cover sung by Kogawa and Bill)

04:20
The song "Ripple" was just one of the great songs from the 1970 album "American Beauty". The whole album has so many great songs on it. The lyrics to "Ripple" have so much meaning, especially for the time it was written, but great song and lyrics stand up to time, as does this song. The entire song could be written today, and it would all hold true. The line at the end of the song "If you should stand then who's to guide you? If I knew the way I would take you home!" This is such an uplifting song of promise and hope, but knows the reality of life......anyway, I have digressed.....Kogawa and I hope you enjoy our take on this great song. Here is the link to Kogawa's YT page....wonderful music: https://www.youtube.com/user/Franken000

The Grateful Dead- Ripple

04:14
If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung, Would you hear my voice come thru the music, Would you hold it near as it were your own? It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken, Perhaps they're better left unsung. I don't know, don't really care Let there be songs to fill the air. Ripple in still water, When there is no pebble tossed, Nor wind to blow. Reach out your hand if your cup be empty, If your cup is full may it be again, Let it be known there is a fountain, That was not made by the hands of men. There is a road, no simple highway, Between the dawn and the dark of night, And if you go no one may follow, That path is for your steps alone. Ripple in still water, When there is no pebble tossed, Nor wind to blow. You who choose, to lead must follow But if you fall you fall alone, If you should stand then who's to guide you? If I knew the way I would take you home. La dee da da da, La da da da da, Da da da, Da da, Da da da da da La da da da, La da da, Da da, La da da da, La da, Da da. -RIP Jerry

Grateful Dead - Box of Rain

05:29
According to Wikipedia: "Box of Rain" is a song by the Grateful Dead, from their 1970 album American Beauty. The song was composed by bassist Phil Lesh and lyricist Robert Hunter, and sung by Lesh. In later years, the song was a favorite and the crowd would shout "Let Phil sing!" to hear the song.[1] Lyrics: Look out of any window, any morning, any evening, any day. *Maybe the sun is shining, birds are winging, Though rain is falling from a heavy sky. What do you want me to do, to do for you to see you through? For this is all a dream we dreamed one afternoon, long ago. Walk out of any doorway, feel your way, feel your way like the day before. Maybe you'll find direction, Around some corner where it's been waiting to meet you. What do you want me to do, to watch for you while you are sleeping? Then please don't be surprised when you find me dreaming too. Look into any eyes you find by you, you can see clear to another day, Maybe been seen before, through other eyes on other days while going home. What do you want me to do, to do for you to see you through? It's all a dream we dreamed one afternoon, long ago. Walk into splintered sunlight, Inch your way through dead dreams to another land. Maybe you're tired and broken, Your tongue is twisted with words half spoken and thoughts unclear What do you want me to do, to do for you to see you through? A box of rain will ease the pain, and love will see you through. Just a box of rain, wind and water, *believe it if you need it, if you don't just pass it on Sun and shower, wind and rain, In and out the window like a moth before a flame. And it's just a box of rain, I don't know who put it there, Believe it if you need it, or leave it if you dare. And it's just a box of rain, or a ribbon for your hair; Such a long long time to be gone, and a short time to be there.

Post 599/1000 Ripple by The Grateful Dead

04:37
I pulled some info from Wikipedia: "Ripple" is the sixth song on the Grateful Dead album American Beauty. It was released as the B-side to the single "Truckin'".[2] Robert Hunter wrote this song in 1970 in London in the same afternoon he wrote "Brokedown Palace" and "To Lay Me Down" (reputedly also drinking half a bottle of retsina in the process [3]). The song debuted August 18, 1970 at Fillmore West in San Francisco. Jerry Garcia wrote the music to this song.[4] Several lines throughout the song have been compared to the 23rd Psalm of the Bible. Technical details[edit] Key: G Time signature: 4/4 Chords used: G, D, C, A, Am The signature lines in this song were played by mandolin player David Grisman. Cover versions[edit] Cover versions have been recorded by Chris Hillman, Jane's Addiction (on Deadicated), The New Riders of the Purple Sage, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Rick Danko, Dar Williams, Built to Spill, Sally's Fiddle Boys, The McLovins. and The Walkmen. In July 2015, a collaborative cover version featuring multiple musicians from around the world was produced by Playing For Change ("a movement created to inspire and connect the world through music"). In popular culture[edit] A number of essays have been written analyzing and annotating this song.[4] The song is featured at the end of the last episode of the TV show Freaks and Geeks, entitled "Discos and Dragons", and in the episode of My Name Is Earl entitled "Creative Writing". The 1985 drama film Mask starring Cher and Eric Stoltz featured this song.[5] The song also appears at the ending scene of the 4th episode ('Acid Tests') of the TV series 'Taken' by Steven Spielberg, and is mentioned in the Stephen King and Peter Straub novel Black House. Lyrics: If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung Would you hear my voice come through the music Would you hold it near as it were your own? It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken Perhaps they're better left unsung I don't know, don't really care Let there be songs to fill the air Ripple in still water When there is no pebble tossed Nor wind to blow Reach out your hand if your cup be empty If your cup is full may it be again Let it be known there is a fountain That was not made by the hands of men There is a road, no simple highway Between the dawn and the dark of night And if you go no one may follow That path is for your steps alone Ripple in still water When there is no pebble tossed Nor wind to blow You who choose to lead must follow But if you fall you fall alone If you should stand then who's to guide you? Grateful Dead - Truckin'

05:09
Grateful Dead - Truckin' Garcia;Lesh;Weir;Hunter Lyrics:Truckin got my chips cashed in. keep truckin, like the do-dah man Together, more or less in line, just keep truckin on. Arrows of neon and flashing marquees out on main street. Chicago, new york, detroit and its all on the same street. Your typical city involved in a typical daydream Hang it up and see what tomorrow brings. Dallas, got a soft machine; houston, too close to new orleans; New yorks got the ways and means; but just wont let you be, oh no. Most of the cast that you meet on the streets speak of true love, Most of the time theyre sittin and cryin at home. One of these days they know they better get goin Out of the door and down on the streets all alone. Truckin, like the do-dah man. once told me youve got to play your hand Sometimes your cards aint worth a dime, if you dont layem down, Sometimes the lights all shinin on me; Other times I can barely see. Lately it occurs to me what a long, strange trip its been. What in the world ever became of sweet jane? She lost her sparkle, you know she isnt the same Livin on reds, vitamin c, and cocaine, All a friend can say is aint it a shame? Truckin, up to buffalo. been thinkin, you got to mellow slow Takes time, you pick a place to go, and just keep truckin on. Sittin and starin out of the hotel window. Got a tip theyre gonna kick the door in again Id like to get some sleep before I travel, But if you got a warrant, I guess youre gonna come in. Busted, down on bourbon street, set up, like a bowlin pin. Knocked down, it gets to wearin thin. they just wont let you be, oh no. Youre sick of hangin around and youd like to travel; Get tired of travelin and you want to settle down. I guess they cant revoke your soul for tryin, Get out of the door and light out and look all around. Sometimes the lights all shinin on me; Other times I can barely see. Lately it occurs to me what a long, strange trip its been. Truckin, Im a goin home. whoa whoa baby, back where I belong, Back home, sit down and patch my bones, and get back truckin on. Hey now get back truckin home.

Ripple - Cover of This Grateful Dead Song

04:14
About the Song: This is one of my favorite Grateful Dead songs from the American Beauty album. The whole song has amazingly deep lyrics written by Robert Hunter (and music by Jerry Garcia) in 1970. Genre: Folk Rock Here are the lyrics (must be shared ;) ): If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung, Would you hear my voice come through the music? Would you hold it near as it were your own? It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken, Perhaps they're better left unsung. I don't know, don't really care Let there be songs to fill the air. Ripple in still water, When there is no pebble tossed, Nor wind to blow. There is a road, no simple highway, Between the dawn and the dark of night, And if you go no one may follow, That path is for your steps alone. Ripple in still water, When there is no pebble tossed, Nor wind to blow. You, who choose to lead, must follow But if you fall you fall alone. If you should stand then who's to guide you? If I knew the way I would take you home.

Grateful Dead - Friend of The Devil

03:24
Garcia,Dawson,Hunter Lyrics: I lit out from reno, I was trailed by twenty hounds Didnt get to sleep last night till the morning came around. Set out runnin but I take my time A friend of the devil is a friend of mine If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight. Ran into the devil, babe, he loaned me twenty bills I spent the night in utah in a cave up in the hills. Set out runnin but I take my time, a friend of the devil is a friend of mine, If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight. I ran down to the levee but the devil caught me there He took my twenty dollar bill and vanished in the air. Set out runnin but I take my time A friend of the devil is a friend of mine If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight. Got two reasons why I cry away each lonely night, The first ones named sweet anne marie, and shes my hearts delight. The second one is prison, babe, the sheriffs on my trail, And if he catches up with me, Ill spend my life in jail. Got a wife in chino, babe, and one in cherokee The first one says shes got my child, but it dont look like me. Set out runnin but I take my time, A friend of the devil is a friend of mine, If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight.

'Ripple' and 'Brokedown Palace' -- Acoustic covers of two Grateful Dead Classics

06:59
Last year for Jerry Garcia's 70th birthday on August 1, I uploaded a recording of two songs he co-wrote with Robert Hunter for Wake of the Flood. This year for his 71st, I'm continuing the "tradition" with two Garcia/Hunter compositions from American Beauty. Actually, most of us who grew up with this classic Grateful Dead album on our turntables have trouble imagining (or singing) Ripple without its last G chord (here capoed to an A) immediately becoming the first chord of Brokedown Palace (which begins at 3'41" of this video). I hope I've done both of these great songs some justice here. If not, at least I hope some of the joy of playing these songs comes through. My other Grateful Dead covers have been collected in a playlist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqOFusUWyB8&list=PLPoP6e6Ri7iKZODEiyHAhPij7rg5b5N4m You can find other songs and playlists at http://youtube.com/rickmumma (subscriptions will be taken as encouragement to set up a camera more often). Gratful Dead - Sugar Magnolia

03:17
Weir;Hunter Lyrics: Sugar magnolia, blossoms blooming, heads all empty and I dont care, Saw my baby down by the river, knew shed have to come up soon for air. Sweet blossom come on, under the willow, we can have high times if youll abide We can discover the wonders of nature, rolling in the rushes down by the riverside. Shes got everything delightful, shes got everything I need, Takes the wheel when Im seeing double, pays my ticket when I speed She comes skimmin through rays of violet, she can wade in a drop of dew, She dont come and I dont follow, waits backstage while I sing to you. Well, she can dance a cajun rhythm, jump like a willys in four wheel drive. Shes a summer love for spring, fall and winter. she can make happy any man alive. Sugar magnolia, ringing that bluebell, caught up in sunlight, come on out singing Ill walk you in the sunshine, come on honey, come along with me. Shes got everything delightful, shes got everything I need, A breeze in the pines and the sun and bright moonlight, lazing in the sunshine yes Indeed. Sometimes when the cuckoos crying, when the moon is half way down, Sometimes when the night is dying, I take me out and I wander around, I wander round. Sunshine, daydream, walking in the tall trees, going where the wind goes Blooming like a red rose, breathing more freely, Ride our singin, Ill walk you in the morning sunshine Sunshine, daydream. sunshine, daydream. walking in the sunshine.
