Gold Miners in Guyana Are Destroying the Amazon (2008)

Hidden Gold Rush (2008): For the local Guyanese, mining gold is one of the few sources of income available to them - but it comes with a heavy environmental cost. After more than a decade of illegal mining, the country is facing an environmental disaster. "First the miners burn down the rainforest. Then they dig a giant crater, hosing away the muddy earth and polluting rivers and forests." There are over a thousand illegal mines like this in French Guyana. They’'re steadily destroying the rainforest’'s ecosystem. "“They will never be able to stop it because the jungle is so big and we are so tenacious”," states one miner. Most of this illegal gold is mixed together with gold from other sources and ends up abroad. "“There needs to be much greater political impetus behind regulating this very destructive trade”," states MEP Caroline Lucas. But how do you regulate an industry if the origins of its products are untraceable? Ghana has had a gold rush but here, Afua Hirsch discovers how Chinese immigrants are profiting from industrialising the country's small-scale mining industry. She sees for herself that, for the many locals who chance losing life and limb for a piece of the same pie, the risks are rarely worth it, and explores where the responsibility for regulating this industry lies. Exposing The Inhumane Conditions Of Burkina Faso's Gold Mines

29:23
Gold Dust: Under Blaise Compaore's leadership, Burkina Faso's unregulated gold rush has had a devastating effect on mining conditions. This report digs deep into the industry, exposing the corruption beneath Compaore's ruling. Millions of people - including children as young as fourteen - mine in an unregulated industry for a few golden grams of hope. Marcel toils underground to support his family - but without the glittering rewards promised. “We all have hope, we hope to earn” he says, but "they rob us here...They treat the miner like an animal." 17-year old Soumaele has been mining for two years. His thin body can go to even deeper than the older men, to places where the air is impossible to breathe and the tunnels are likely to collapse. Gold promises a great deal, but in an anarchic industry, teacher Soungalo Hema fears for the future of children like Soumaele: "You try and save them", she says, "but a lot of the time it’s in vain. I ask myself 'what will happen to all of us?'" Hydraulic Gold Mining

19:53
This movie is the last remaining part of footage from an old video cassette that I owned. I believe that it is still available from the Empire Mines State Park. I do not own the copyright to this movie and this is being posted here under YouTube's Guidelines for informational and teaching purposes. Then I added pictures on my own of the Malakoff State park from days gone past when mining was active in the area to the end of this movie. This is a great addition to this hydraulic mining playlist, so watch history being taught from long ago & then learn & enjoy.

Across Bhutan, thousands are making the arduous journey to the mountains in a quest to strike it rich. Desperate men and children scour underwater mine-shafts in this terrifying report. Breathing through nothing more than a thin pipe connected to an air compressor, going 30 foot deep underwater for hours in search of gold is all in a day’s work for 16-year-old Gerald. "I'm afraid, if the earth collapses, I will get buried underneath" says the teenager. Surrounded by rock walls in the pitch black darkness of the water, the men chip away at walls for 3 hours. They find no gold. For many like Gerald school is a distant memory, and illegally diving for gold the only alternative to starvation. Hundreds of deaths by electrocution, drowning and even the possibility of Mercury poisoning have had little impact on compressor mining activities, which continue un-policed and unregulated. There appears little hope of change on the horizon. "If I could only give job opportunities - I will take them away from compressor mining. It is just that I have no alternative at this point" says Ricarte Padilla, Mayor of Jose Panganiban - Philippines' so-called "Gold Coast". As it is, the children and family men unearthing 60-80kg of gold per month see the lions share of wealth disappear into the Chinese black market. After The Gold Rush (2000): The Ok Tedi mine in the high remote mountains of Papua New Guinea is the scene of massive environmental damage. As world leaders debate the causes and effects of global warming, we take a look at yet another example of man's damaging behaviour on the environment. In the light of BHP's decision to exit the giant Ok Tedi gold and copper mine in Papua New Guinea, this documentary asks what happens when a foreign mining company bails out of a big project in a developing country? This report investigates what is being named the biggest disaster in Brazil's mining history. A horror mudslide swept through the towns and villages in the Gualaxo River Valley, destroying homes, businesses and taking the lives of 19 people. A tailings dam, holding back more than 50 million cubic metres of mining waste collapsed, unleashing a wave of mud several metres high. "The mud dragged me down, I would come up, it would take me down again... I screamed but nobody answered", remembers Priscila Barros, who was pulled four kilometers under the deadly slurry. The mud, containing lead, arsenic and other toxic chemicals, continued down river all the way to the Atlantic coast 600km away. "This mud wave has killed anything that was alive in these water systems", explains Marilene Ramos of the Brazilian Environment Authority. Now Brazilian police are seeking the arrest of 12 of Samarco's executives for negligent homicide and crimes against the environment. "A dam doesn't break by chance. There is repeated, continual negligence in the actions of a company owned by Vale and BHP", says prosecutor Carlos Eduardo Pinto. Gold Rush Expeditions, Inc®. presents: The Lucky Dollar Mine©, Montana

09:33
The Lucky Dollar Mine© was reported to be located in 1880. The mine has been historically known as the Powderly Mine as far back as 1890 when it was purchased by the T.V. Powderly Company. The mine did not begin to ship ore until 1890. The Lucky Dollar is the most recent naming of the property and is how it is currently referred to by local land management agencies such as the USGS and BLM. The mines are on 40 acres of lode mineral claim (MMC 234563 and MMC 234564) staked and owned (2017) by Gold Rush Expeditions, Inc. These claims cover all the workings and mapped trending as it has been documented to date. The mines have shipped paying ores as late as 1964. Work is locally reported to be carried out on the property as late as 1990. The mine shows in good condition from what can be ascertained from the surface. There is an adit located roughly 80 feet below a shaft on the property. Both portals are in rough condition and will need rehabilitation to be safely accessible. There are no known mappings or deposit descriptions of the mine workings. The mines do show substantial amounts of high grade galena on the surface. There is easy access to the mines on county maintained roads on public land. The Lucky Dollar (Powderly) is reported to be primarily a silver mine, however, based on extensive geological reporting, it is thought that the mine is cut on similar deposits as other larger mines in the district such as the Cumberland and the Yellowstone. If this is the case, there is also small amounts of gold in sulfides to be recovered at depth. The Lucky Dollar is a part of the Castle Mountain District, which is basically an ancient volcano. The geological trends associated with volcanic deposits are text book in nature and should provide excellent opportunity for profitable development. The two (2), twenty (20) acre contiguous claims span across all of the workings of the mines. These claims are situated in an east-west orientation. The original Powderly (Lucky Dollar) was situated in a North South orientation. Gold Rush Expeditions, Inc. set the claims as show below to cover all of the relevant workings in the area and to verify that all interest in the mine are covered by the claims. The mine portals occur at or around 6400 feet in Elevation. The highest point on the claims is 6800’. See the images and get a full technical reporting of the property at: https://goldrushexpeditions.com/mining-claims-for-sale/mining-claims-for-sale-lucky-dollar-mine/
City of Gold

This classic short film from Pierre Berton depicts the Klondike gold rush at its peak, when would-be prospectors struggled through harsh conditions to reach the fabled gold fields over 3000 km north of civilization. Using a collection of still photographs, the film juxtaposes the Dawson City at the height of the gold rush with its bustling taverns and dance halls with the more tranquil Dawson City of the present. Mongolia's Mining Boom (2012)

The Big Dig: Mongolia is the new frontier in a massive, break-neck speed resources rush. Australian miner Rio Tinto is about to open one of the biggest copper mines on the planet in Mongolia, which will soon account for more than 30% of the country's entire GDP. "Some of the optimistic geologists we have say that this business could run for up to 100 years", Cameron McRae from Rio Tinto explains. But the company only cedes the Mongolian government a 34% stake, provoking worries about where the benefits of Mongolia's resource wealth will go. There's concerns the government is ill-equipped to strike complex mining deals in the national interest. "The deal is a financial transaction and whether it's really beneficial to Mongolia, I have many doubts about that", argues Dorjdari from the Responsible Mining Initiative. Environmentalists also worry that the mining push has come so fast and so aggressively that proper checks and balances are not in place. "Most tourists come to Mongolia because they want to see that pristine open space blue sky, but what if we couldn't offer it anymore?" Inside Ivory Coast's hidden gold rush | The Economist

05:41
Inside Ivory Coast's hidden gold rush takes a look at the gold mining industry in Ivory Coast. For a long time mining was seen as a dirty alternative to a more wholesome farming lifestyle. But some of the richest gold-mining potential in Africa is luring hundreds of thousands of Ivorians off the land and into the mines. Montezuma Mine, Colorado. Gold Rush Expeditions, 2014

01:28
The Montezuma Mine was originally located in 1878, near the apex of the lode that would be come to be known as the Smuggler Lode. By 1884 the mine had been producing thousands of tons of silver and lead ore along with a lot of gold. Old historical documents show that the gold was processed at the lower or 6th level as they shipped all of the silver and lead down to be smelted in Leadville. Somewhere around 1896-7, a larger mining company began digging in near the river following placer gold and silver bits. They called this mine the Carribeau, named for a lake or sea in Europe. They worked in and hit the Smuggler vein at a lower instance. Unlike the upper mine, these claimants immediately patented the property once they were producing ores. Around 1900, the Carribeau, working up, intersected with the Montezuma as they worked down. The Montezuma Mine has a documented 12.8 miles of drifts, raises, winzes and cross-cuts.
🇨🇳 China's African Gold Rush | 101 East

Ghana is one of the world's poorest countries, yet it is rich in gold. For a decade now, Chinese miners from the region of Shanglin have travelled there to try their luck mining gold. 101 East travels to the middle of the tropical rainforest to meet the Chinese miners and Ghanaian workers trying to escape poverty. But is this gold rush really benefiting the impoverished nation, or is all the money going back to China with the miners - leaving Ghana with an environmental bill to pay? UPDATE: The Golden Eagle from Australia discovered in 1931 is coming in at 1135 ounces, or 35,185 grams, and takes #7 on the list. Thanks to Outback Gold Mining and Prospecting for bringing that one to our attention! Many thanks. Very interesting story in that it was found in the track (road for us non-Aussies) that the prospectors had been traveling every single day.

South Africa's Illegal Gold Mines

10:37
In the 1970s, South Africa was the world's most prolific exporter of gold. Over the years, industrial decline has seen widespread closures of the mines across the country. However, Johannesburg sits on the biggest gold basin ever discovered. It's perhaps not surprising that many of these abandoned mines have seen a recent boom in illegal mining activity. Everyday, hundreds of illegal gold miners, known as Zama Zamas, descend kilometers deep beneath the surface. The miners often spend weeks underground, toiling away at the country's untapped gold reserves. Observers have suggested that illegal mining is now so widespread, black-market gold arguably supports the communities once subsistent on the very same mines they worked in before they shut down. The lack of policing in the mines has seen the practice go on largely unabated. However, in the absence of law enforcement, the extensive network of abandoned mines beneath the region has become an arena to deadly gang warfare between rival factions. VICE News visited illegal mines near Johannesburg, to meet the Zama Zamas risking life and limb everyday in the violent struggle for South Africa's illegal gold. Mining at Diamond Hill Mine. The video shows cluster after cluster being pulled from the thick gooey mud! They are not shown cleaned because they were given away dirty numbered so the owners could see their piece being found here and they could clean it for the first time. Still an awesome presentation of some nice quartz crystals being found!

Death Canyon, Tooele County, Utah - Gold Rush Expeditions, Inc. 2008

This video is an amalgamation of our exploration of Death Canyon. GRE, Inc. Death Canyon is mostly privately owned and private property on the mining claims. Lost Treasure USA has offered access to their sites if you contact them at [email protected] If you visit these sites, please be respectful and leave everything as you find it. This includes relics and any artifacts you may come across; the Antiquities Act of 1906 makes it a federal crime to move or disturb any relics or artifacts that could be of historical significance. Since 2004, Gold Rush Expeditions has been working to save these historic sites as a part of Utahs heritage. Unfortunately, the state is against us, Utahs Governor, John Huntsman, Jr. does not think these sites deserve saving. His office has been contacted numerous times and still the destruction continues. Additionally, the BLM, and the Office of Surface Mining has disregarded our arguments. Please take a moment to help us save Utahs mining heritage, visit our website at www.goldrushexpeditions.com and click on the "Action Items" to send an email to all of the interested parties with one simple click.

Bill Staines - Sourdough/The Miner's Song

06:30
Bill Staines has been recording folk music for over 40 years. He writes most of the songs he sings, which are tales that he has woven of Americana adventures. I made this video for a medley of two of his songs, "Sourdough" and "The Miner's Song". It's about the 1899 Alaska Gold Rush. My cousin provided me with the beautiful pictures that I used during the instrumental parts at the beginning and end of the video. This medley is from Bill's album "Wild, Wild, Heart" from 1985. The lonesome-sounding violin is played by Stuart Shulman.

Gold Rush Expeditions - Dirty Sanchez Mine - Arizona - 2016

01:52
The Dirty Sanchez mine is a very old and historic mine, likely dating back to the 1870s. It was first developed by the Juno Group and later separated from the Juno property in the 1950s. The mine is developed on a well defined lode of gold ore that bears native gold and some sulphide silver. Surveyors documented many small veins with gold and iron stained quartz. The northern portion of the mine was closed somewhere around the 1920s because of water intrustion in the mine. It has likely not been accessed since. Pumping out that water would be well worth it to access workings that have not been seen in at least 80 years. The Dirty Sanchez is an excellent mine for small miners, as the ores are clearly defined and easily worked. Gold ore from the mine can be crushed and then panned with little to no machinery.
World's Deepest Mine - Gold Alchemy

04:51
South Africa's TauTona mine, real life alchemy, and Halicephalobus Mephisto. Footage from the 2012 documentary, "Down to the Earth's Core". We have travelled into space and looked deep into the universe's depths, but the world beneath our feet remains unexplored and unseen. Now, that's about to change. For the first time in one epic unbroken shot, we embark on an impossible mission - using spectacular computer generated imagery to smash through three thousand miles of solid rock, and venture from our world into the underworld and on to the core of the Earth itself. It's a journey fraught with danger. One thousand feet down we find ourselves inside one of the planet's most volatile places - the San Andreas Fault. Caught between two huge rock slabs, we watch as stress builds and then releases. It unleashes an earthquake and blasts us on towards rivers of molten rock, explosive volcanoes, tears in the Earth's crust and giant tornadoes of liquid metal. But for every danger, there are wonders beyond imagination. Four hundred feet below the surface, a three hundred million year old fossilized forest, with every leaf and every piece of bark perfectly preserved. At one thousand feet down we enter a cave of giant crystals, glistening in deadly 122 degree heat. More than two miles underground we find buried treasure - gold and gems. Deeper still there are valuable resources - salt, oil, coal and iron. And over one hundred miles down we see the sparkling beauty of diamonds. As we descend we piece together our planet's extraordinary story. We rewind time to discover how prehistoric forests became modern-day fuel. 1700 feet down a layer of rock reveals the extraordinary story of the dinosaurs' cataclysmic death. We watch stalactites form and gold grow before our eyes. The deeper we travel into the underworld the more we understand our world above the surface. A bigger picture takes shape - a cycle of destruction and creation, driven by the core that sustains our dynamic planet and makes the Earth the only planet with life in a seemingly lifeless universe. Until, finally, three thousand miles down, we reach the core. Inside it lie the secrets of life as we know it - the magnetic force field that protects life on Earth from the sun's deadly rays, the ancient heat source that keeps our planet alive. Down to the Earth's Core brings the latest science together with breathtaking computer generated imagery. The result is an unmissable journey into an extraordinary world - full of dangers, wonders and secrets. And it's all down there, beneath our feet, right now waiting to be discovered.

With shocking evidence now uncovered, Zimbabwe’'s diamond trade faces suspension. "We were told ‘here are the guns, sitting in the truck, do you want to stay?’" says Andrew Cranswick, CEO of the mining company who owns the rights to mine diamonds in Marange. After his company was evicted, the Marange fields were opened up to the people and tens of thousands of Zimbabweans came to dig, paying the police a commission. Yet the police didn'’t always play fair - "$15 million worth of diamonds were confiscated", says one former miner – and soon the police were replaced by Mugabe’s own military. "Mugabe needed a way to buy the loyalty of the army" says Ken Roth, "the military were ordered to kill". In the first week of November, helicopter gunships launched a massacre on the Marange diamond fields. Evidence has been collected of 200 deaths. Those who weren’'t killed were raped or crippled. "They told us if we wanted to go home we had to sleep with the men", says one woman, "the soldiers watched and laughed". Next month, the Kimberley process, the international body charged with stopping trade in conflict diamonds, will decide whether Zimbabwe should be suspended. Yet with many Western governments involved in Zimbabwe'’s diamond trade, a former delegate of the Kimberley process believes this deadly business may yet be protected. Pounds and Pounds of Gold: I Mined Gold at Sterling Creek Mine | Glenn Wadstein

37:54
Glenn Wadstein mined Sterling Creek Mine from 1986-2001 and found pounds and pounds of gold. He built his own equipment and treated the job as a sand and gravel operation. Here's the equipment he built, the way he moved overburden to reveal the ore and how he processed the ore to filter out the gold. Wadstein took this video in 1986 at the outset of the mining operation, edited it into a clear and descriptive narrative and then converted the video to digital format in 2017. Wadstein narrated the video on October 22, 2017 at the Ashland Literary Arts Festival held Hannon Library, Southern Oregon University.
