Day 8 of 12 - 2018 family summer vacation! Why do we call this a mystery vacation? We are pulling from a hat each time we want to change locations. Where will we end up next? This is a 12 day series and we plan to do a short recap each day. Day 8 - On this day we traveled to Hoosier Pass, Continental Divide and Boreas Pass Breckenridge, Colorado. We climbed a steep and narrow 4 wheel drive trail on the south side of the historic route. Boreas Pass Summit County Colorado Boreas Pass Scenic Drive – Como to Breckenridge Boreas Pass makes a great summer route to reach Breckenridge from the south. The 22-miles drive leads you from Como in Park County, up over an 11,481-foot summit, down into Summit County and Breckenridge. Pronounced Bore-ays, Boreas Pass is a stunning hour long drive through Colorado’s central Rockies, connecting Park and Summit counties. It links the historic village of Como to the thriving resort town of Breckenridge. Summer scenic drive, camping, hiking near Breckenridge Whether you start in Breck or Como, the drive will be exciting and relatively quick. The route is suitable for low-clearance 2WD cars, although it does get a little bumpy in some areas, for the most part, it’s an easy, high-alpine drive. It summits at 11,481 feet above sea level. History The originally began as Breckenridge Pass in the 1860s as a route to reach the gold mines. It was widened to a wagon road that could handle stagecoaches in 1866. IN 1882 a railroad track was laid, connecting Como and Breckenridge. It ran until 1937. It was made into an automobile pass in 1952. https://www.uncovercolorado.com/scenic-drives/boreas-pass/ Things to do in Breckenridge, Colorado CO https://www.gobreck.com/seasons/summer/summer-activities-in-breckenridge/# 15 best things to do in Breckenridge, Colorado CO https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g33327-Activities-Breckenridge_Colorado.html Keep chasing your dreams and remember the 3 L's: Love People Live Free Laugh More Vacation Playlist https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list... The drive to Colorado from Utah is breathtaking. Winding roads through snow covered mountains, endless tunnels with an occasional train passing along the river. The entire countryside is reminiscent of the us of the Wild West and gold mining. In this episode, we setup at Tiger Run Resort in Breckenridge, CO and work in our cozy trailer while snow falls for over 20 hours. Then we head into town to take our first glace at the International Snow Sculpting Contest before visiting Nordic Ski Center for a full day of snow shoeing. https://www.amazon.com/shop/keepyourdaydream *This is a small way to help keep our channel going that doesn’t cost you anymore money and all purchases are private ****************** MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE ****************** Our Winter Camping Video: https://youtu.be/2sORrlTH2hM RV Health: https://rvhealth.com/ ****************** START HERE VIDEOS ****************** KYD Playlists: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEhJLsShZt8McryMf_DHLZQ/playlists Season 4 Intro: https://youtu.be/BoUE5AHeCiA Our official Q&A video: https://youtu.be/ZKUDMI0QdFo How to plan your RV trip & our top 5 apps: https://youtu.be/HD0gG167gVY RV Newbie: 10 things you should know https://youtu.be/BsEs-CLBbaU Our top 5 questions: https://youtu.be/sW7JtH5TMnM How to pick the perfect RV: https://youtu.be/81KFlbR-STg *********** SOCIAL MEDIA LINKS **************** http://www.Instagram.com/KeepYourDaydream http://www.Facebook.com/KeepYourDaydream http://www.Twitter.com/KeepUrDaydream http://www.KeepYourDaydream.com *********** BECOME A KYD INSIDER ********** We want to get to know you! Places to see in ( Breckenridge - USA ) Breckenridge is a Colorado town at the base of the Rocky Mountains’ Tenmile Range. It's known for its ski resort, year-round alpine activities and Gold Rush history. The Victorian core of this former mining town is preserved as the Breckenridge National Historic District, running primarily along Main Street, with colorfully painted buildings from the 1880s and '90s housing shops, galleries and restaurants. Set at the foot of the marvelous Tenmile Range, Breck is a surviving mining town with a vibrant historic district. The down-to-earth vibe is a refreshing change from Colorado's glitzier resorts, and the family-friendly ski runs and gold-nugget history make it Summit County's most atmospheric destination. Regardless of whether it’s snow or shine, the BreckConnect Gondola up to the base of Peak 8 is where the fun begins. The vast, hulking mountains here rise and fall, merging seamlessly into one another to present a perfect alpine backdrop. Laced with ski runs and hiking trails and stitched together with pine groves, they blaze gold in the morning, glow pink at dusk and fade into a deep shadowy blue as the sky pales then darkens, revealing endless stars best viewed from a frothing hot tub next to the roaring Blue River. Lake Creek Colorado gold prospecting May 25, 2014. My first trip to Colorado to prospect. We were on private land that is a pay-to-dig type area. I was using my small stream sluice with Gold Hog matting for the coarser material and using my homemade power header on my other small sluice on the sluice stand to run the finer material less than 20 mesh. I was trying to separate the magnetite from both the classifier and from the fine material sluice to help with reducing the unnecessary heavies from getting in the way. You can also see the downspout sluices I made for the kids to use. They worked and got gold too.

Redcloud Peak and Sunshine Mountain directly overlook Cannibal Plateau above Lake City, Colorado, where during the winter of 1873-74 Alferd Packer led an expedition from Provo, Utah toward the gold country of Breckenridge, Colorado. Near Montrose, Colorado, winter conditions became worse, and ignoring advice from Ouray, Chief of the Ute, Packer and five men set out for Gunnison. They veered too far south avoiding the impassable Black Canyon, and trekked across the Cimarron and Powderhorn Country, making it onto a high plateau above Lake City. Besides Packer, the group was made up of Shannon Wilson Bell, James Humphrey, Frank "Reddy" Miller, George "California" Noon, and Israel Swan. The hopelessly lost prospectors became snowbound and ran out of food. What happened next became Colorado legend. On April 16, 1874, Packer arrived at Los Pinos Indian Agency. He spent some time in a saloon in Saguache, Colorado, where he met several of his original party. When questioned about the five others, his changing stories weren't believed, and he was jailed. Investigation led to the discovery of the men's remains on Cannibal Plateau. They had been butchered, and human flesh jerky was found in one of Packer's saddle bags. At the trial, charged with murder because there was no law against cannibalism, Packer claimed he acted in self-defense, but changed his story several times. In the last version, he claimed he went scouting and came back to find Shannon Bell roasting human flesh. When Bell rushed him with a hatchet, Packer shot him. Packer claimed Bell had gone mad and murdered the others. During the sentencing phase, presiding judge, M.B. Gerry, said: “Stand up yah voracious man-eatin' sonofabitch and receive yir sintince. When yah came to Hinsdale County, there was siven Dimmycrats. But you, yah et five of 'em, goddam yah. I sintince yah t' be hanged by th' neck ontil yer dead, dead, dead, as a warnin' ag'in reducin' th' Dimmycratic populayshun of this county. Packer, you Republican cannibal, I would sintince ya ta hell but the statutes forbid it.” Court records, however, reveal that Judge Gerry's prose was much more educated: “Close your ears to the blandishments of hope. Listen not to its fluttering promises of life. But prepare to meet the spirits of thy murdered victims. Prepare for the dread certainty of death.” Packer signed a confession on August 5, 1874. He was jailed in Saguache, but he escaped soon afterwards. He was a fugitive for nine years until apprehended in Cheyenne Wyoming and returned to Lake City for additional trial. Eventually his sentence was reduced and he was pardoned in 1901. Although these peaks are easy and rewarding hikes, and are recommended as peaks even children can hike, the Alferd Packer story isn't exactly a suitable children's tale. This music flirts with all kinds and manner of grace notes. neighbors, escapes, appogiotura, doubles... pianist holds sustain pedal down constantly so orchestra renews and generates overtones, heard by themselves in measures of orchestral rest. Each beat, conductor cues a section who holds a sustained note, each a note of the theme, until it concludes with every instrument playing every note simultaneously, and then upon the release, you hear the overtones from strings of the piano. Every once in a while you hear a "kerplunk" of a rock in the water of Lake San Cristobal.

Cripple Creek, Colorado 2005, gold mining camp For many years Cripple Creek's high valley, at an elevation of 9,494 feet (2,894 m), was considered no more important than a cattle pasture. Many prospectors avoided the area after the Mount Pisgah hoax, a mini gold rush caused by salting (adding gold to worthless rock). On the 20th of October, 1890, Robert Miller "Bob" Womack discovered a rich ore and the last great Colorado gold rush began. Thousands of prospectors flocked to the region, and before long Winfield Scott Stratton located the famous Independence lode, one of the largest gold strikes in history. In three years, the population increased from five hundred to ten thousand by 1893. Although $500 million worth of gold ore was dug from Cripple Creek, Womack died penniless on 10 August 1909. In 1896 Cripple Creek suffered two disastrous fires. The first occurred on April 25 destroying half of the city including much of the business district. Four days later another fire destroyed much of the remaining half. The city was rebuilt in a period of a few months, most historic buildings today date back to 1896. By 1900, Cripple Creek and its sister city, Victor, were substantial mining communities. During the 1890s, many of the miners in the Cripple Creek area joined a miners' union, the Western Federation of Miners (WFM). A significant strike took place in 1894, marking one of the few times in history that a sitting governor called out the national guard to protect miners from anti-union violence by forces under the control of the mine owners. By 1903, the allegiance of the state government had shifted and Governor James Peabody sent the Colorado National Guard into Cripple Creek with the goal of destroying union power in the gold camps. The WFM strike of 1903 and the governor's response precipitated the Colorado Labor Wars, a struggle that took many lives. Through 2005, the Cripple Creek district produced about 23.5 million troy ounces (979 1/6 troy tons; 731 metric tons) of gold. The underground mines are mostly idle, except for a few small operations. There are significant underground deposits remaining which may become feasible to mine in the future. Large scale open pit mining and cyanide heap leach extraction of near-surface ore material, left behind by the old time miners as low grade, has taken place since 1994 east of Cripple Creek, near its sister city of Victor, Colorado. The current mining operation is conducted by Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mining Company (CC&V). The mine operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Mine operations, maintenance, and processing departments work a rotating day/night schedule in 12-hour shifts. With many empty storefronts and picturesque homes, Cripple Creek once drew interest as a ghost town. At one point the population dropped to a few hundred, although Cripple Creek was never entirely deserted. In the 1970s and 1980s travelers on photo safari might find themselves in a beautiful decaying historic town. A few restaurants and bars catered to tourists who could pass weathered empty homes with lace curtains hanging in broken windows. Colorado voters allowed Cripple Creek to establish legalized gambling in 1991. Cripple Creek is currently more of a gambling and tourist town than a ghost town. Casinos now occupy many historic buildings. Casino gambling has been successful in bringing revenue and vitality back into the area. It also provides funding for the State Historical Fund, administered by the Colorado Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation. In 2012, Colorado casinos produced over $104 million in tax revenue for these programs https://youtu.be/D9Zf37YutQ4 Cripple Creek Colorado 2005

"Is anyone afraid of the dark?" Our group stood still. "Anyone afraid to admit it?" I thought about piping up. Too late. Mine foreman, Eric Kellegrew, switched the overhead lights off as we stood 1,1000 feet inside the Old Country Boy Mine in Breckenridge, Colorado. Lightly placing his hand over a flashlight, Eric demonstrated just how dim work conditions were inside the mine in the 1800's. Seeing only by flickering candlelight, miners endured extremely challenging work conditions. But that marks only the beginning of the list. Rats in the hundreds squirmed at the boots of miners. "They have a sixth sense," Eric told us. If the rats ran out of the mine, miners followed." Rats were used for their ability to detect air quality problems in the mine. Several miners also eventually lost their hearing. After Eric turned on the hydraulic drill there was no questioning the intensity of the noise that carried deep inside the mountain during the ten hour work days. When miners weren't using the drill, they used other techniques like single jacking and double jacking while standing in up to a foot of muddy water. Taking a 45-minute tour of the Old Country Boy Mine allows you to experience the drastic conditions miners faced day in and out for a whopping 80 cents a day. The mine was established in 1887 but was shut down after loosing government funding when WWII ended. In 1994, two brothers restored the mine and chipped deeper into the mountain, making it an even more authentic way to experience Colorado's mineral rich past. "Now we just mine for tourists," Eric jokes. While at the mine you can also pan for gold, learn what a blast monkey was, slide down the 55 foot ore shoot and explore the authentic mining equipment used in the mines hay day. Breckenridge is true Rocky Mountain high country. And it has a strange effect: It makes you feel ageless. Maybe it’s the way you can access wild places from here, like fly-fishing on the Blue River, paddling down Brown’s Canyon, or exploring hundreds of miles of singletrack with you mountain bike. Or maybe it’s the sensation of stepping back in time when you come across mining relics on a hike. Maybe it’s the vibrancy of town, full of history and character and an incredibly laid-back charm that makes it the perfect place to unwind and catch up with friends. However you do it, this place always tends to serve up an adventure. And as with any adventure, it makes you feel alive. * This video is proudly produced in partnership with the Breckenridge Tourism Office: http://www.gobreck.com/ @GoBreck #BreckLife DOWNLOAD OUR APP APPLE: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/travelstoke/id983733875?mt=8 ANDROID: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.matadornetwork.travelstoke&hl=en MORE FROM MATADOR NETWORK WEB: http://matadornetwork.com/ INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/matadornetwork/ YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/user/MATADORnetwork FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/matadornetwork ABOUT MATADOR NETWORK MatadorNetwork.com and its social channels are the #1 digital destination for affluent millennial travelers and adventurers.
