All Scientific Papers Should Be Free; Here's Why They're Not

04:43
Have you ever tried to access scientific research but the website says you have to pay? Why is that? Shouldn't information be free? Who Pays For Science? - https://youtu.be/L7oklmbtxoY Sign Up For The Seeker Newsletter Here - http://bit.ly/1UO1PxI Read More: Who Pick Up the Tab for Science? http://www.bu.edu/research/articles/funding-for-scientific-research/ "Scientists say that much of the public-and many politicians-do not have a general understanding of the scientific process, knowledge critical for smart decision-making in our increasingly technological society." Peer Review at Science Publications http://www.sciencemag.org/authors/peer-review-science-publications "For in-depth review, at least two outside referees are consulted. Reviewers are contacted before being sent a paper and are asked to return comments within 1 to 2 weeks for most papers. Reviewers may be selected to evaluate separate components of a manuscript." Vestiges of print publications in scientific journals https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/information-culture/vestiges-of-print-publication-in-scientific-journals/ "The first scientific journals were published in the late 17th century, and these print publications changed very little over time. Developments in printing technology, distribution and the advent of the commercial publisher all impacted the process, but the basic form was easily recognizable." ____________________ DNews is dedicated to satisfying your curiosity and to bringing you mind-bending stories & perspectives you won't find anywhere else! 30 Facts You Never Knew about the Human Body

07:53
30 incredible facts about the human body that will deeply impress you. We bet you’ve never heard about half of them! We tend to think that we know our bodies perfectly. We are aware of how they work and what kinds of processes occur in them every second. In fact, the human body is one complex and mysterious mechanism that sometimes confuses even the most qualified specialists — doctors and scientists. SUMMARY 1. A tongue print is absolutely unique. 2. A single hair can hold the weight of a hanging apple. 3. The number of bacteria in a person’s mouth is equal to the number of people living on Earth, or even more. 4. Nails that are soft and brittle, with no moon, could indicate an overactive thyroid. 5. The speed of an incoming brain impulse is about 400 km/h. 6. There are not just four different blood types as we used to think but in fact 29! 7. Over the course of just one day, our blood ’runs’ the distance of 11,9999 miles (or 19,312 kilometers). 8. Men also have glands that can produce milk, but its production represents an abnormality for the male body. 9. A human makes approximately 20,000 breaths per day. 10. Almost all people in the world have special mites on their eyelashes called Demodex. 11. A human eye can distinguish up to 10 million different colors. But our brain can’t remember all of them. 12. Our ears keep on growing throughout our lives with almost unbelievable speed — a quarter of a millimeter per year! 13. The heart beats 35 million times a year. 14. Every day, the human body loses about one million skin cells — that amounts to 4,5 lbs. (or 2 kilos) every year. 15. 1 square centimeter of your skin contains around a hundred pain sensors. 16. This might be very surprising to some, but 26% of men also experience PMS. 17. The average person consumes about 77,000 lbs. (or 35 tons) of food during his or her life. 18. A human spends about five years of their life blinking. Fortunately, we can do many other things simultaneously! 19. 100,000 chemical reactions occur every second in our brains. 20. Women cry average 30 to 64 times a year, and men cry just 6 to 17 times. 21. Smiling triggers 17 muscles of the face while crying activates 43. So smile more! 22. A man’s face preserves its youthful appearance a lot longer than a woman’s face does. 23. The total length of all the nerves in the human body is 46 miles (or 75 km). 24. Boys have fewer taste buds on the surface of their tongues than girls do. 25. All human beings in the world began their existence as females. X and Y chromosomes are responsible for determining an individual’s sex. 26. Men can discern far fewer shades of color than women can, and the reason for this is quite simple. Color perception is determined by retinal cone cells. 27. Women blink twice as much as men. Also, women’s hearts beat faster than men’s. 28. The speed of your sneeze is 100 miles per hour (or 140 km per hour). 29. A feeling of thirst occurs when water loss is equal to 1% of your body weight. The loss of more than 5% can cause fainting, and more than 10% cause death from dehydration. 30. The muscles which help your eyes to focus complete around 100,000 movements a day. #humanbody # Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz For copyright matters please contact us at: [email protected] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our Social Media: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/brightside/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brightgram/ 5-Minute Crafts Youtube: https://www.goo.gl/8JVmuC  ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more videos and articles visit: http://www.brightside.me/

The Science of Anti-Vaccination

Fewer children in the United States are getting vaccinated. That’s bad news for those kids, and also for public health in general. Often, the response is to argue and debate and get angry at people who are we see as making terrible, irrational decisions. Instead of doing that, let’s use science to understand why this is happening in the first place. Hosted by: Hank Green ---------- Like SciShow? 10 Amazing Science Tricks Using Liquid!

Add me on Facebook (click LIKE on Facebook to add me) - http://www.facebook.com/brusspup Download the music in this video: Song #1: Abyss - iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/abyss-single/id1033702454 Amazon download: http://www.amazon.com/Abyss-brusspup/dp/B014I4BFTI/ Song #2: Over Rain iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/over-rain-single/id1033695238 Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Over-Rain-brusspup/dp/B014JXPNSW/ Detailed information for the tricks in the video: 1. Slow motion ball: You need a thick liquid, preferably honey, a heavy ball, and a sphere shaped container. Place the heavy ball in the lower half of the sphere. Fill the lower half of the container with honey a little more than half. If you use too little or too much, it will affect the motion of the ball. 2. Water fire starter. Credit goes to The King of Random for this idea. Be sure to check out his channel. He has a huge selection of amazing how to experiments. https://www.youtube.com/user/01032010814 You need a plastic or glass container with a curved area. The Pom bottles work great. Fill the bottle with water. Fold 2 sheets of paper in half, twice. Print or scribble a black mark on one of the sheets. On a sunny day hold the bottle near the paper, focusing the light on the black area of the paper. Once it starts to smoke and a hole begins to form, wrap the other sheet of paper around the smoking piece. Wave the papers through the air to feed oxygen to the spark. Continue this until the paper catches on fire. 3. No-leak magic bag: Al you need is a zip baggy, pencils and water. Fill the bag almost to the top. Zip it shut, and start sticking pencils through the bag. Sometimes a few drops will leak out, but overall, this is a simple yet impressive trick 4. Liquid Stacking: You'll need a tall glass or bottle. Dish Soap, vegetable oil, dark corn syrup, rubbing alcohol, water and food coloring. First add the dark corn syrup, then dish soap, then add food coloring to the water and pour it in with the bottle tilted, then add the vegetable oil (bottle tilted), and finally add food coloring to the alcohol and pour it in with the bottle tilted. 5. Invisible Bottle: You need glycerin, a glass and a bottle that will fit in the glass. Fill both glass and bottle with glycerin and place the bottle in the glass. It looks like the bottle disappears. 6. Dancing Liquid: You need a powered speaker, a tone generator (can be found online), corn starch, water and plastic to protect the speaker. Pour 1/2 cup of corn starch in a bowl and 1/4 cup of water. Mix. Pour the liquid into the speaker and generate a 60hz tone. 7. Magic Water Barrier: You need 2 of the same glasses. Hot water, cold water, food coloring and a thin piece of plastic or cardboard. Pour the hot water in 1 glass, the cold in the other glass, add food coloring, then place the plastic on top of the hot water glass. Turn the glass upside down, place it on top of the cold water glass, then carefully remove the plastic. Hot water is less dense than cold water, so it "floats" on top of the cold water. 8. Leidenfrost effect: You need a pan, water and a stove. Turn the heat on high for about 4 minutes then add the water. This experiment can stain your pans. 9. Reverse Illusion: Add all sorts of images or words behind a glass, then watch as it reverses when you add water in the glass. 10. Reversing Liquid: You need 1 big glass, 1 smaller glass, 3 mixing glasses, corn syrup, pipettes, food coloring, and clips. First pour the corn syrup into the 2 bigger glasses. Place the smaller glass inside of the bigger glass. Attach the clips to prevent the smaller glass from moving side to side in the bigger glass. Pour a small amount of corn syrup into the 3 mixing glasses. Add food coloring and stir. Fill each pipette with a different color, then add the colored corn syrup to your big glass. Turn the smaller glass carefully and watch the colors mix. Turn it back and watch them unmix. Thanks for watching! Have fun!

Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence: Crash Course Computer Science #34

11:51
So we've talked a lot in this series about how computers fetch and display data, but how do they make decisions on this data? From spam filters and self-driving cars, to cutting edge medical diagnosis and real-time language translation, there has been an increasing need for our computers to learn from data and apply that knowledge to make predictions and decisions. This is the heart of machine learning which sits inside the more ambitious goal of artificial intelligence. We may be a long way from self-aware computers that think just like us, but with advancements in deep learning and artificial neural networks our computers are becoming more powerful than ever. Articles (a, an, the) - Lesson 1 - 7 Rules For Using Articles Correctly - English Grammar

16:59
In this lesson, learn the 7 rules for using articles in English correctly. Also see - MOST COMMON MISTAKES IN ENGLISH & HOW TO AVOID THEM: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Dax90QyXgI&list=PLmwr9polMHwsR35rD9spEhjFUFa7QblF9 For more FREE English lessons, SUBSCRIBE to this channel. Transcript: Hello and welcome. In this lesson, I will teach you the seven rules that you need to know for using articles in English correctly. Articles are the words ‘a’, ‘an’, and ‘the’. There is a final quiz at the end of the lesson for you to test your understanding. OK, the first rule is about where to use ‘a’ and where to use ‘an’. So rule number one is use ‘a’ before a consonant sound, and ‘an’ before a vowel sound. So in all of these words – you see that they start with a consonant sound. Cat starts with /k/, dog starts with /d/, boy with /b/, girl with /g/, house with /h/ and tree with /t/. So we say ‘a cat’, ‘a dog’, ‘a boy’, ‘a girl’, ‘a house’, ‘a tree’ etc. Notice that in natural speech, we don’t say ‘a’, we say ‘uh’ – like ‘a cat’. In this next set of words, you see that, they all start with a vowel sound – apple starts with /ae/, engineer starts with /e/, ice-cream with /ai/, old with /o/, umbrella with /uh/. So we say ‘an apple’, ‘an engineer’, ‘an ice-cream cone’, ‘an old womman’, ‘an umbrella’ and so on. In speech, we don’t say ‘an’, we say /ən/. Let’s do a small exercise. You see ten items on the screen. For each one, I want you to say if you would use ‘a’ or ‘an’ before it. Stop the video, think about it, then play the video again and check. OK here are the answers. Did you get them all right? I want to focus on items number seven to ten because these are a little tricky. Number seven is ‘a university’ because even though ‘university’ starts with the letter ‘u’ the first sound of the word is not a vowel sound. We don’t say /ooniversity/. We say /yoo-nə- vər-si-ty/ so that first sound is a /y/ sound, which a consonant sound, so we say ‘a university.’ Number eight is similar. The word ‘European’ starts with a /y/ sound, so ‘a European tour.’ In number nine, the spelling has an ‘h’ at the start but that ‘h’ is silent. We don’t say /hau-ər/, we say /au-ər/. The first sound is an /au/ sound which is a vowel sound, so this is ‘an hour’. In the same way, in number ten, we say MA. ‘M’ starts with an /e/ sound which is again a vowel sound, so ‘an MA in English’. OK let’s move on to rule number two: Use ‘a’ and ‘an’ ONLY with singular, countable nouns. We say that a noun is countable if we can count it – one, two, three, four etc. All of these words on the screen are countable. We can say one elephant, three cars, ten teachers, five hundred onions and so on. Now if you talk about one person or thing, like one elephant or one car, then that’s called a singular noun and if you say ten teachers or five hundred onions, those are called plural nouns. Uncountable nouns cannot be counted in this way. Nouns like water, sugar, milk, love, anger, knowledge are some examples. If you think about it, you cannot say “I drank four waters” or “I want eight milks”. To a person, you can say “I love you” but you can’t say “I have five loves for you” – that doesn’t make any sense. So these are all uncountable. Alright, so the rule is - you can only use ‘a’ and ‘an’ if you’re talking about one person or one thing. Let’s do another quick exercise. Here are ten items again. This time, you see ‘a’ or ‘an’ before the nouns, but some of these are wrong. They should NOT have ‘a’ or ‘an’ before them. Stop the video, identify the mistakes, then play the video again and check. OK, here are the answers. Number three is wrong because ‘shirts’ is a plural and you cannot use ‘a’ or ‘an’ before a plural noun. Number five is wrong because ‘happiness’ is uncountable, so again, ‘a’ or ‘an’ cannot be used there. The same goes for number six – water is uncountable. Number nine is wrong because ‘doctors’ is a plural – you can say ‘a doctor’ but not ‘a doctors’. And finally, in number ten, advice is an uncountable noun – so you cannot ask for ‘an advice’. Now a quick note here: the article ‘the’ can be used with all kinds of nouns – singular or plural countable nouns, and uncountable nouns. OK, so let’s now talk about how to choose between ‘a’ or ‘an’ and ‘the’. Here’s rule number three: Use ‘a’ or ‘an’ to talk about a person or thing unknown to your listener. And use ‘the’ to talk about a person or thing known to your listener. For example, “My sister has two computers: a PC and a laptop. The PC is quite old but the laptop is brand new.” I say ‘a PC’ and ‘a laptop’ because that’s the first time I’m mentioning the two computers. That is, until this point, they are unknown to you, the listener.

Who Decided We Needed to Take Vitamins? (Part 1 of 3)

07:11
Take your vitamins! You've probably head a parent tell you that, but really, why should we take them to begin with? And who decided vitamins were a good idea? Read More: Vitamins 101: Know What You Need https://www.good.is/articles/know-what-you-need Today, vitamins and supplements have grown to a $68 billion dollar global industry, a $13 billion market in the United States alone, and while we’ve made leaps and bounds in understanding the effect vitamins have on our systems, consumers still struggle with what they should be taking, and how much of it. Harvard Health: Listing of vitamins https://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/listing_of_vitamins The list of vitamins and minerals below can give you an understanding of how particular vitamins and minerals work in your body, how much of each nutrient you need every day, and what types of food to eat to ensure that you are getting an adequate supply. The discovery of the vitamins https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23798048 The discovery of the vitamins was a major scientific achievement in our understanding of health and disease. In 1912, Casimir Funk originally coined the term "vitamine". The major period of discovery began in the early nineteenth century and ended at the mid-twentieth century. The puzzle of each vitamin was solved through the work and contributions of epidemiologists, physicians, physiologists, and chemists. ---- Seeker+ is built for enthusiastic science fans who are interested in comprehensive conversations on their favorite geeky topics.
