Full-rank Gaussian Modeling of Convolutive Audio Mixtures Applied to Source Separation

We address the modeling of reverberant recording environments in the context of under-determined convolutive blind source separation, that is the extraction of the signal of each source from a multichannel audio mixture. Firstly, we propose a general Gaussian modeling framework whereby the contribution of each source to all mixture channels in the time-frequency domain is modeled as a zero-mean Gaussian random variable whose covariance encodes both the spatial and the spectral characteristics of the source. In order to better account for the reverberant mixing process, we relax the conventional narrowband assumption resulting in rank-1 spatial covariance and propose a full-rank spatial covariance parameterization. We then design a general source separation architecture, which is applicable for both linear and quadratic input time-frequency representations, and derive a family of Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithms to estimate the model parameters either in the maximum likelihood (ML) sense or in the maximum a posteriori (MAP) sense. The source separation results given by the proposed approach are compared with several baseline and state-of-the-art algorithms on both simulated mixtures and real-world recordings in various scenarios.

The contents of the video are summarized below: This video takes place in the Spectrus Processor interface showing an experimental 1H NMR spectrum of a 3 component mixture (ATP, sucrose, and glutathione). The three components have been imported into the chemical structure window, shown below the spectrum. The first step in analyzing this mixture is to predict a 1H NMR spectrum of the three structures and compare it to the experimental spectrum. To predict the 1H NMR spectrum of the mixture, we select HNMR from the calculation drop-down menu located in the chemical structure window. Following this, we are prompted to specify the molar ratio of components to one another. In this example, ATP and glutathione are set to a ratio of 2, while sucrose is left as 1. Once the prediction is performed for the components at different ratios, the experimental and predicted datasets can be compared side-by-side. For ease of interpretation, the spectral peaks for each component in the predicted spectrum are labelled with their own respective color. The peaks assigned to ATP are red, the peaks assigned to sucrose are blue, and the peaks assigned to glutathione are green. To better see how the predicted spectrum compares to the experimental data, users can zoom into a region on either spectrum, and both spectra will adjust to show the selected region. This shows that you can: 1. Predict spectra for a mixture of components of your choosing 2. Define the molar ratio for components in the mixture 3. The software will distinguish what the assignments are for each component and color-code them Furthermore, as mixture analysis by NMR can lead to complicated spectra with overlapping peaks, there is the option to predict the components’ spectra as a 1D pure shift 1H NMR spectrum. This collapses all the proton-proton couplings into a single peak and helps to simplify areas with lots of overlap. For example, we calculate ATP as a pure shift 1H NMR spectrum. Now, in the case of RLC circuit, during the transient analysis, when we write KVL or KCL equation then we will get second order linear differential equation. And the response of the system depends upon the roots of this differential equation. Now, in the RLC circuits, L and C have a tendency to induce the oscillation in the circuit, while Resistor R has a tendency to suppress or damp out this oscillation. So, depending upon the value of R, L and C and ultimately on the roots of the equation, we can have 4 different types of response. For, series RLC Circuit: Case 1: (R/2L)^2 is greater than (1/LC) If the roots are real, negative and different, then the response of the system will be an overdamped response. Case 2: (R/2L)^2 = (1/LC) If the roots are Real and equal, then the response of the system will be a critically damped response. Case 3: (R/2L)^2 is less than (1/LC) If the roots are complex conjugate then the transient response of the circuit will be underdamped and it will have some oscillation in the circuit, which will die out eventually. Case 4: R=0 The roots will be purely imaginary, and response will be purely oscillatory without any damping. For, parallel RLC Circuit: Case 1: (1/2RC)^2 is greater than (1/LC) If the roots are real, negative and different, then the response of the system will be an overdamped response. Case 2: (1/2RC)^2 = (1/LC) If the roots are Real and equal, then the response of the system will be a critically damped response. The principle employed in the measurement of velocity (v) is based on the accurate determination of the wavelength (l) in the medium. Ultrasonic sound refers to sound pressure with a frequency greater than the human audible range (20Hz to 20 KHz). When an ultrasonic wave propagates through a medium, the molecules in that medium vibrate over very short distance in a direction parallel to the longitudinal wave. During this vibration, momentum is transferred among molecules. This causes the wave to pass through the medium.

Identifiability of Non-Gaussian Structural VAR Models for Subsampled and Mixed Frequency Time Series

Author: Alex Tank, Department of Statistics, University of Washington Abstract: Causal inference in multivariate time series is confounded by subsampling in time between the true causal scale and the observed data sampling rate. In practice, this presents challenges for inferring causal interaction between time series due to differences in sampling rates across time series and generally low sampling rates due to technological limitations. To determine instantaneous and lagged effects between time series at the true causal scale, we take a model based approach based on structural vector autoregressive (SVAR) models. We show that when the underlying noise, or shocks, to the system are non-Gaussian, both the parameters of the true model and its causal structure are identifi- able from subsampled and mixed frequency data. Our work builds on the recent work of Gong et al. [1], who established the identifiability of VAR models from subsampled time series with non-Gaussian noise, but with no instantaneous interactions. Here, we generalize their work to the SVAR case to handle instantaneous interactions and, additionally, the multifrequency setting. The resulting approach provides a complete picture of identifiability in non-Gaussian SVAR models under arbitrary mixed frequency subsampling. Warthin Tumor (Salivay Gland Neoplasm) - part 2 Warthin tumor or papillary cystadenoma lymphomatosum is a benign neoplasm that occurs almost exclusively in the parotid gland. Although it is much less common than the pleomorphic adenoma, it represents the second most common benign parotid tumor, accounting for 5% to 14% of all parotid neo- plasms. The name adenolymphoma also has been used for this tumor, but this term should be avoided because it overemphasizes the lymphoid component and may give the mistaken impression that the lesion is a type of lymphoma. Analyses of the epithelial and lymphoid components of the Warthin tumor have shown both to be polyclonal; this suggests that this lesion may not represent a true neoplasm but would be better classified as a tumorlike process. The pathogenesis of these tumors is uncertain. The traditional hypothesis suggests that they arise from heterotopic salivary gland tissue found within parotid lymph nodes. However, researchers have also sug- gested that these tumors may develop from a prolifera-tion of salivary gland ductal epithelium that is associated with secondary formation of lymphoid tissue. This latter theory is supported by studies that have found cytogenetic abnormalities in the epithelial component. A number of studies have demonstrated a strong asso- ciation between the development of this tumor and smoking. Smokers have an eightfold greater risk for Warthin tumor than do nonsmokers. The Warthin tumor usually appears as a slowly growing, painless, nodular mass of the parotid gland. It may be firm or fluctuant to palpation. The tumor most frequently occurs in the tail of the parotid near the angle of the mandible, and it may be noted for many months before the patient seeks a diagnosis. One unique feature is the tendency of Warthin tumor to occur bilaterally, which has been noted in 5% to 17% of reported cases. Most of these bilateral tumors do not occur simultaneously but are metachronous (occurring at different times). In rare instances, the Warthin tumor has been reported within the submandibular gland or minor salivary glands. However, because the lymphoid com- ponent is often less pronounced in these extraparotid sites, the pathologist should exercise caution to avoid overdiagnosis of a lesion better classified as a papillary cystadenoma or a salivary duct cyst with oncocytic ductal metaplasia. Warthin tumor most often occurs in older adults, with a peak prevalence in the sixth and seventh decades of life. The observed frequency of this tumor is much lower in blacks than in whites. Most studies show a decided male predilection, with some early studies demonstrating a male-to-female ratio up to 10:1. However, more recent investigations show a more bal- anced sex ratio. Because Warthin tumors have been associated with cigarette smoking, this changing sex ratio may be a reflection of the increased prevalence of smoking in women over the past few decades. This association with smoking also may help explain the frequent bilaterality of the tumor, because any tumori- genic effects of smoking might be manifested in both parotids. The Warthin tumor has one of the most distinctive histopathologic patterns of any tumor in the body. Although the term papillary cystadenoma lympho- matosum is cumbersome, it accurately describes the salient microscopic features. The tumor is composed of a mixture of ductal epithelium and a lymphoid stroma . The epithelium is oncocytic in nature, forming uniform rows of cells surrounding cystic spaces. The cells have abundant, finely granular eosinophilic cyto- plasm and are arranged in two layers. The inner luminal layer consists of tall columnar cells with centrally placed, palisaded, and slightly hyperchromatic nuclei. Beneath this is a second layer of cuboidal or polygonal cells with more vesicular nuclei. The lining epithelium demonstrates multiple papillary infoldings that protrude into the cystic spaces. Focal areas of squamous metaplasia or mucous cell prosoplasia may be seen. The epithelium is supported by a lymphoid stroma that frequently shows germinal center formation. Surgical removal is the treatment of choice for patients with Warthin tumor. The procedure usually is easily accomplished because of the superficial location of the tumor. Some surgeons prefer local resection with minimal surrounding tissue; others opt for superficial parotidectomy to avoid violating the tumor capsule and because a tentative diagnosis may not be known pre- operatively. A 6% to 12% recurrence rate has been reported. Many authors, however, believe that the tumor is frequently multicentric in nature; therefore, it is difficult to determine whether these are true recur- rences or secondary tumor sites. Malignant Warthin tumors (carcinoma ex papillary cystadenoma lym- phomatosum) have been reported but are exceedingly rare.

A bandpass (BP) filter passes the portion of a signal occupying a band surrounding the cutoff frequency and rolls off the portions above and below that band. A highpass (HP) filter passes the portion of a signal above a specified cutoff frequency and rolls off the portion below that frequency. There are multiple two-pole, four-pole, multi-pole state-variable and analog-modeled LP, BP, and HP filter designs in Phat FX, each with distinctive characteristics that you may prefer for a given purpose. The available LP, BP, and HP filter designs include Smooth, Edgy, Rich, Sharp, Clean, and Gritty variants. Smooth: Two- or multi-pole state-variable filters. Edgy: Two- or four-pole analog-modeled filters. Four-pole variants provide a steeper roll-off of frequencies beyond the cutoff. Rich: Two- or four-pole analog-modeled filters. Four-pole variants provide a steeper roll-off of frequencies beyond the cutoff. Sharp: Two-pole analog-modeled filters. Clean: Bi-Quad filters. These filters have no Drive option. Gritty: Two-pole filters designed to saturate heavily at higher Resonance and Drive settings. The three principal filter controls have standard functions for all filter types. Cutoff: Controls the filter cutoff frequency. Resonance: Controls the filter resonance or emphasis. Higher settings boost frequencies in the immediate vicinity of the cutoff frequency. Drive: Allows the filter to be overdriven; the precise effect varies with each filter design. Phat FX filter types: notch and peaking A notch filter cuts a narrow band around a resonant frequency. The remainder of the signal is affected minimally. Cutoff: Sets the frequency of the cut band. Amount: Controls the amount of attenuation. A peaking filter boosts a narrow band around a resonant frequency. The remainder of the signal is affected minimally. Cutoff: Sets the frequency of the boosted band. Gain: Controls the amount of boost. Higher values are generally the most effective. BW: Sets the bandwidth around the cutoff frequency. Phat FX filter types: comb filters A comb filter mixes the original signal with one or more copies of the signal, which are delayed by a very short time interval. At some frequencies this mixture causes phase cancelations, while at other frequencies it causes reinforcements. The result is a spiky frequency spectrum with multiple resonant peaks. Graphically, these peaks resemble the teeth of a comb, which gives this filter type its name. Phat FX offers three comb filter designs, each with its own character. The best choice depends on your preference and the type of sound you are trying to create. That said, there are some distinguishing characteristics that may help guide you. Cutoff: Controls the delay time in the comb circuit. Lower cutoff values equate to a longer delay. F-Back: Controls the amount of feedback in the comb circuit. Damp: Softens the frequency peaks in the comb-filtered spectrum. Note: Sending a percussive sound into a highly resonant comb filter causes it to ring at a frequency determined by the delay time you have set with the Cutoff knob. Phat FX filter types: ring modulation Ring modulation is a process in which a modulator and a carrier signal are multiplied. Each frequency component of the modulator interacts with each frequency component of the carrier to produce two sidebands: a sum and a difference (carrier – modulator). When a filter is set to the RingMod type, the signal entering the filter acts as the modulator, while the carrier is supplied internally by the filter. Frequency: Controls the carrier frequency. Mix: Applies a constant offset to the carrier. At 0%, the carrier wave varies between –1 and +1, resulting in classic ring modulation. At 100%, the carrier wave varies between 0 and 1, resulting in classic amplitude modulation. In this case, the carrier signal itself is present alongside the sum and difference sidebands. Phat FX filter types: distortion Phat FX filters offer several distortion effects. Bitcrusher is a harsher-sounding digital effect. Downsampler is a lo-fi digital effect (similar to Bitcrusher but is frequency dependent). Mech is a metallic-sounding distortion. Tube is a classic tube distortion effect. The filter controls work as follows when the filter type is set to a distortion effect: Amount: Controls the intensity of the distortion effect. Mix: Controls the mix between clean and distorted signals. A 0% value results in the clean signal only. A 50% value results in an equal mix of clean and distorted signal. A 100% value results in the distorted signal only. Freq: Sets the frequency for the Downsample distortion type.

Warthin Tumor (Salivay Gland Neoplasm) - part 1 Warthin tumor or papillary cystadenoma lymphomatosum is a benign neoplasm that occurs almost exclusively in the parotid gland. Although it is much less common than the pleomorphic adenoma, it represents the second most common benign parotid tumor, accounting for 5% to 14% of all parotid neo- plasms. The name adenolymphoma also has been used for this tumor, but this term should be avoided because it overemphasizes the lymphoid component and may give the mistaken impression that the lesion is a type of lymphoma. Analyses of the epithelial and lymphoid components of the Warthin tumor have shown both to be polyclonal; this suggests that this lesion may not represent a true neoplasm but would be better classified as a tumorlike process. The pathogenesis of these tumors is uncertain. The traditional hypothesis suggests that they arise from heterotopic salivary gland tissue found within parotid lymph nodes. However, researchers have also sug- gested that these tumors may develop from a prolifera-tion of salivary gland ductal epithelium that is associated with secondary formation of lymphoid tissue. This latter theory is supported by studies that have found cytogenetic abnormalities in the epithelial component. A number of studies have demonstrated a strong asso- ciation between the development of this tumor and smoking. Smokers have an eightfold greater risk for Warthin tumor than do nonsmokers. The Warthin tumor usually appears as a slowly growing, painless, nodular mass of the parotid gland. It may be firm or fluctuant to palpation. The tumor most frequently occurs in the tail of the parotid near the angle of the mandible, and it may be noted for many months before the patient seeks a diagnosis. One unique feature is the tendency of Warthin tumor to occur bilaterally, which has been noted in 5% to 17% of reported cases. Most of these bilateral tumors do not occur simultaneously but are metachronous (occurring at different times). In rare instances, the Warthin tumor has been reported within the submandibular gland or minor salivary glands. However, because the lymphoid com- ponent is often less pronounced in these extraparotid sites, the pathologist should exercise caution to avoid overdiagnosis of a lesion better classified as a papillary cystadenoma or a salivary duct cyst with oncocytic ductal metaplasia. Warthin tumor most often occurs in older adults, with a peak prevalence in the sixth and seventh decades of life. The observed frequency of this tumor is much lower in blacks than in whites. Most studies show a decided male predilection, with some early studies demonstrating a male-to-female ratio up to 10:1. However, more recent investigations show a more bal- anced sex ratio. Because Warthin tumors have been associated with cigarette smoking, this changing sex ratio may be a reflection of the increased prevalence of smoking in women over the past few decades. This association with smoking also may help explain the frequent bilaterality of the tumor, because any tumori- genic effects of smoking might be manifested in both parotids. The Warthin tumor has one of the most distinctive histopathologic patterns of any tumor in the body. Although the term papillary cystadenoma lympho- matosum is cumbersome, it accurately describes the salient microscopic features. The tumor is composed of a mixture of ductal epithelium and a lymphoid stroma . The epithelium is oncocytic in nature, forming uniform rows of cells surrounding cystic spaces. The cells have abundant, finely granular eosinophilic cyto- plasm and are arranged in two layers. The inner luminal layer consists of tall columnar cells with centrally placed, palisaded, and slightly hyperchromatic nuclei. Beneath this is a second layer of cuboidal or polygonal cells with more vesicular nuclei. The lining epithelium demonstrates multiple papillary infoldings that protrude into the cystic spaces. Focal areas of squamous metaplasia or mucous cell prosoplasia may be seen. The epithelium is supported by a lymphoid stroma that frequently shows germinal center formation. Surgical removal is the treatment of choice for patients with Warthin tumor. The procedure usually is easily accomplished because of the superficial location of the tumor. Some surgeons prefer local resection with minimal surrounding tissue; others opt for superficial parotidectomy to avoid violating the tumor capsule and because a tentative diagnosis may not be known pre- operatively. A 6% to 12% recurrence rate has been reported. Many authors, however, believe that the tumor is frequently multicentric in nature; therefore, it is difficult to determine whether these are true recur- rences or secondary tumor sites. Malignant Warthin tumors (carcinoma ex papillary cystadenoma lym- phomatosum) have been reported but are exceedingly rare.

It is meant to make automotive components work less, when the demands are not as heavy. And, we created the PWM Bi Directional controller to help you test and diagnose all solenoids, motors and actuator components. PWM, or pulse width modulation, is the ability to control a load or component, by pulsing its electrical current. In this way, the load or component can be made to change its speed, without any heat causing parts, like resistors. So, if PWM is using pulses to control a load, then Duty Cycle is the measurement of these pulses. The Duty Cycle of a PWM signal, tells us the amount of work this signal is supposed to make the component perform. The duty cycle of the signal is always described in percentage. So, a 10% duty cycle means, that the component is on 10% of the time. And a 90% duty cycle means the component is on 90% or most of the time. Now, there is a close relationship between duty cycle, and how the component is triggered or turned on, which could be by applying power or ground. This relationship is very important, so remember that thoroughly. Here is what we mean by that. Suppose a solenoid is activated by ground. That means, that 12 volts or battery voltage is applied steadily on one side, mostly through a relay, and the other side receives a PWM ground command signal. Now imagine that a 10% duty cycle PWM signal is applied. What we then have is to measure is how long the signal is grounded. And, how long as compared to the entire cycle. A 10% PWM duty cycle means that the solenoid receives a ground only 10% of the time, and receives power 90% of the time. Since we have already mentioned that this is a ground controlled solenoid, the time the drive transistor provides power means that component is off. Why? because you already have steady power on one side, so power on the other side equals no operation. If, on the other hand, the component is turned on by power, meaning ground is steadily applied on one wire, and power is pulsed, that same mentioned signal, will then become a 90% duty cycle signal. Now with this power actuated component, the positive or 12 volt side is what matters, and what is taken as the duty cycle. It is worth mentioning that most components are triggered or actuated by ground. Why? It is because if that command signal is shorted to chassis ground, the component will simply turn on all the time, like a 100% cycle. If it were power triggered, then there would be a short, and the fuse would blow rendering the system useless. But still, some components are power triggered, and be prepared to understand the nature of PWM to Duty Cycle. Hopefully what you have learned here will give you some insight on using the PWM Bi Directional Controller to perform your diagnostics.

Regenerating Depleted Oil and Gas Wells Using Water Shut Off Method

OUR CORPORATION WORKS USING THIS OWN TECHNOLOGY IN PERSIAN GULF AT REGENERATION OF DEPLETED OIL/GAS WELLS. ONE OF MAIN PROBLEMS OF OIL/GAS PRODUCTION IS THAT MOST OF WELLS ARE DEPLETED EVEN THE RESERVOIR CONTAINS RESIDUAL 70% OF THE OIL/GAS DEPOSIT. MOSTLY IS IT BECAUSE OF STRATUM WATER INFLOW. WE ARE ABLE TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM, AS WE DO IT IN MIDDLE EAST TOO. The technology uses 36 basic chemicals and additional 20 additives as material components. All of them are common chemicals, no one is hazardous or "dual purpose" material. Their transportation does not require especial licenses or permissions; part of them requires ADR trucks. Those 36+20 chemicals do not react all of them each other, but they are modified by very high frequency magnetic resonators and other force fields during the waterproofing composite material manufacturing. Each well needs different mixture of chemicals, different blending and reaction/manufacturing procedure because each well has specific condition and parameters. Component chemicals change their composition and mixture proportion depending on the well´s bedrock, stratum properties, depth, temperature, pressure, stratum water acidity/alkality/salinity/..., all together approx. 40 different factors. The chemicals will be delivered to the well from our manufacturing facility in semi-finished state by tank trucks or by plane. We use Ukrainian production facility to avoid contingent problem with E.U. sanctions concerning our works in Middle East. These chemicals are finally treated directly at the well by especial (software controlled) mobile high-frequency electromagnetic resonators to state of gel then the composite material gel is pumped into the well. The gel injection work does not need especial equipment -- only a small modification of commonly used high pressure cementing pumps. Such especial blend of gels is injected into the well, then the well is held under the pressure for the next 30 -- 40 days (the time depends on the composite formulization and well´s properties). During this aging time period the especial blend of gels (composite material) transforms itself to porous water stop membrane. Such polarized "sponge" is enough porous to let flow through hydrocarbons (crude oil or gas) from the oil/gas reservoir into the well system, but the water cannot flow through -- this effect is based on different physico-chemical properties of liquids´ molecules in the reservoir. Molecules of water have specific dipole force field´s interaction with this "sponge" different from hydrocarbons´ interaction. Such interaction press away each water molecule from the "sponge" but does not react with long molecules of hydrocarbons. This "sponge" is not hindering the flow of hydrocarbons but forms electro-dynamic barrier (based on dipole force moments -- as nature of water molecules) to the water flow. After the aging time period, or if the pressure in the well goes to high, the well will be unbolted and the oil/gas recovery starts without water production. Advantage of our technology application is that there isn´t needed recovering of all wells of the oil/gas reservoir, but only a smaller part of wells of depleted oilfield will be treated. Our scientists (after study of all well data of the oil/gas wells of the field) could determine and shape the bedrock and stratum topography of the oil/gas reservoir. From this information they calculate and determine which wells use to be impregnated. After these selected wells were impregnated, water mass presses itself the oil into impregnated wells from large part of the oil/gas field. It causes that less wells will recover remaining oil/gas from the oil/gas field without water production. In average, we could declare that impregnated well will produce after its treatment the same or more quantity of oil/gas as did it once before (during its former productive life). Chemicals´ consumption for one well treatment varies from 4 to 26 tons. The main benefits of making your own DIY succulent soil mix are that it’s cheaper, and you control the ingredients and you can modify this succulent soil recipe to get the perfect soil mix that your succulents will love. And more thing to note is Several environmental factors can cause the soil to dry out, so different types of soil will be best-suited for different growing areas that is the area where you live, as well as the location where you keep your succulents, will play a role in determining what type of soil your succulents need. Hence we shall classify the Succulent Soil Mix into Indoor Succulent Mix and Outdoor Succulent or Cactus Mix and lastly universal potting mix for succulents. The Indoor Succulent Soil Mix: Since indoor environments do not provide much air circulation around indoor pots, we need to wisely plan the perfect succulent soil for the health of indoor succulents. The Formula for indoor potting mix for succulents: Soil with a large particle size is preferred, roughly a Quarter inch or 6mm. This best succulent soil recipe works extremely well for indoor succulents: • 1 Part Pine Bark Fines – bonsai bark pines (If you do not have or do not want to buy this you can use peat moss or even cocopeat).If you are using cocopeat, watering frequency should be lesser. • 1 Part Perlite (You can also use Vermiculite, but for indoor mix better use perlite, because vermiculite retains lot of water within it) • 1 Part Crushed Granite or Marble Chips or even you can use Coarse sand particles. Let’s talk a little about why this mix works for succulents. The pine bark provides an organic element and holds water–but it has air pockets for ventilation and also, it takes a long time to break down. The Perlite or vermiculite absorbs some of the water and slowly releases it. I have discussed in detail about Perlite and Vermiculite differences in a separate video. You can find the link in video description. Well, lastly, The granite or marble chips allows the water to flow among all the particles in the pot. Since the mix is very porous, water flows or drains out easily, Plus there’s plenty of air, which means the roots are never left sitting in water. Outdoor Succulent Soil Recipe for Potted Succulents: If you want to use the same indoor potting mix recipe for succulents, then you might need to water them on a daily basis. So the formula you can use is: 1 Part Coconut Coir or cocopeat or peat moss or even sand or a mix of these. • 1 Part Perlite or Vermiculite or Even Crushed Granite or Marble Chips or a mix of all these as 1 Part. The coconut coir absorbs water easily and holds little longer and also drains out very well. Plus, it’s lightweight, so your succulent pots will be a bit lighter. Universal Potting Mixture for Succulents: You can use it both indoors or outdoors. 1 part Good quality Potting Soil 1 part perlite or vermiculite 1 part Gravel or crushed granite or marble chips or coarse sand. You can also consider adding 10 percent Vermicompost or Cow dung powder to this mix, but its optional. Well the Conclusion is, There is no one way to prepare a best soil for cactus or succulents and any mix that drains well should support healthy succulent growth. Jasper Michels 2016-2017 Seminar Series December 1, 2016 Many organic and hybrid thin film electronic devices (e.g. memory diodes, solar cells, light emitting diodes, transistors, capacitors) typically contain a functional layer based on a blend comprising multiple polymeric or small-molecular species whose properties cooperatively give rise to a specific function. Depending on the desired functionality, phase separation during film processing is either encouraged or suppressed. As usually at least one blend component is polymeric, mutual segmental repulsion readily overcomes the entropic driving force to form stable mixtures. For this reason, it is often observed that during solution-casting droplet-like demixed structures emerge due to liquid-liquid demixing, which may or may not be desirable. This presentation will focus on the role of liquid-liquid demixing in thin film electronics by demonstrating how local phase composition and characteristic morphological features affect (opto-)electronic performance. Calculations based on mixing thermodynamics as well as results from dynamic phase field simulations will be placed in direct context with electronic processes such as charge injection, recombination and trapping. As the community heavily relies on controlling morphology development during solution-processing, I would in the second part of the presentation like to share novel insight concerning the influence of solvent evaporation on spinodal decomposition. We have recently shown how both the early and late stages of demixing are strongly affected by the continuous drift in composition imparted by evaporation, and why significant deviation from the “classical” laws governing structure formation and domain growth is observed.

The resistor is a passive electrical component to create resistance in the flow of electric current. In almost all electrical networks and electronic circuits they can be found. Wirewound resistors are probably the oldest type and can be used for both high precision as well as high power applications. They are constructed by winding a special metal alloy wire, such as nickel chrome, around a non- conductive core. They are durable, accurate and can have very low resistance value. A disadvantage is that they suffer from parasitic reactance at high frequencies. For the highest requirements on precision and stability, metal foil resistors are used. They are constructed by cementing a special alloy cold rolled film onto a ceramic substrate. Resistor characteristics Dependent on the application, the electrical engineer specifies different properties of the resistor. The primary purpose is to limit the flow of electrical current; therefore the key parameter is the resistance value. The manufacturing accuracy of this value is indicated with the resistor tolerance in percentage. Many other parameters that affect the resistance value can be specified, such as long term stability or the temperature coefficient. The temperature coefficient, usually specified in high precision applications, is determined by the resistive material as well as the mechanical design. In high frequency circuits, such as in radio electronics, the capacitance and inductance can lead to undesired effects. Foil resistors generally have a low parasitic reactance, while wirewound resistors are amongst the worst. For accurate applications such as audio amplifiers, the electric noise must be as low as possible. This is often specified as microvolts noise per volt of applied voltage, for a 1 MHz bandwidth. For high power applications the power rating is important. This specifies the maximum operating power the component can handle without altering the properties or damage. The power rating is usually specified in free air at room temperature. Higher power ratings require a larger size and may even require heat sinks. Many other characteristics can play a role in the design specification. Examples are the maximum voltage, or the pulse stability. In situations where high voltage surges could occur this is an important characteristic. Sometimes not only the electrical properties are important, but the designer also has to consider the mechanical robustness in harsh environments.

Ancient DNA and the new science of the human past Air date: Wednesday, September 21, 2016, 3:00:00 PM Category: WALS - Wednesday Afternoon Lectures Runtime: 01:05:46 Description: NIH Director's Wednesday Afternoon Lecture Beginning in 2010, it became practical to sequence whole genomes from DNA extracted from ancient human boness, and to analyze the data to understand changes in biology over time. Since that timethen, the amount of ancient DNA data has increased at an extraordinary rate, with the number of samples with at least one-fold genome coverage being 5 five in 2013, 18 in 2014, and 116 in 2015. Dr. Reich will begin his lecture by describing how present-day Europeans derive from a fusion highly divergent ancestral populations as different from each other as are Europeans and East Asians. He will then summarize the history of modern humans in Europe over the approximately 45,000 years since they first arrived. He will next describe the spread of farming populations from the Near East over the last twelve thousands12,000 years. He will finally conclude by describing explaining how the analysis of ancient DNA has led to. some of the insights about human biological change over time.
