Eng/Nat She was a grand old lady of the sea. In her heyday she led the Allied invasion of Normandy. Now 50 years and a change of identity later she was confined to the bottom of the sea off Cape Town. To the strains of The Last Post played by the South African Naval band, the SAS Pietermaritzburg, formerly the HMS Pelorus sank into the Atlantic Ocean on Saturday. The World War Two veteran and minesweeper exploded in a cloud of smoke and then disappeared under the water to her next role as tourist attraction. Bought by South Africa in 1947 she was used by the Navy to train noncommissioned officers and later became a Navy accommodation ship. Her triumphant voyage across the English Channel leading the Allied minesweepers safely to Normandy was but a distant memory as she was relegated to becoming an artificial reef for divers, tourists and swimmers in False Bay. A far cry from coming under fire from enemy forces. And it's unlikely that she will ever again help make history. But her demise was sombre all the same. The company rose and the officers saluted as she embarked on her final voyage. SOUNDBITE: "Well, what is one feeling when one says good bye to an old friend - one of great emotion and great sadness. At the same time, I think we are all very proud to have served on that ship." SUPER CAPTION: Martin Kramer, former crew member HMS Pelorus Tourists and locals lined the coast to watch her demise and listen to South African Rear Admiral Simpson Anderson sing her praises. SOUNDBITE: ``She was under the name of HMS Pelorus, the senior ship of the flotilla of minesweepers that led the Armada of ships safely across the English Channel for the Normandy landings 50 years ago. She survived heavy shell fire from shore batteries by day, ceaseless bombings and strafings by the Luftwaffe by night when sweeping for mines for eleven days following the D-Day landings." (English) SUPER CAPTION: Rear Admiral Simpson Anderson. Navy officials first thought of sinking her in a private ceremony far off the coast. But they were persuaded that snuffing her out 20 metres off shore would ensure a long-term tourist attraction. And if her burial watch was anything to go by, they may be right. It uses an incredible amount of resources, emits toxic pollutants into the air, and pumps the ground full of formaldehyde, which is known to cause cancer. It's also prohibitively expensive. The average cost of a modern funeral costs between $10,000 to $12,000. There are a number of greener options available though. Cremation uses less resources and requires less space than a traditional burial, but isn't perfect. There are more experimental methods on the horizon such as promession and alkaline hydrolysis. No matter which method we choose, it's clear that we need to reform how we bury the dead. Also be sure to read Mark Harris's excellent book about green burials http://www.gravematters.us

Expert Interview with Ian Cooper, Health and Safety Manager at Hudbay Minerals
Ian Cooper, Health and Safety Manager at Hudbay Minerals in Canada, reports on the significance of deep mining on mines rescue during the IMRB Conference (October 2013, Canada). The limiting factors such as long distances, tight timeframes and high temperatures have a direct effect on possible rescue concepts. Additionally, there are issues with the stability of the ground at that level. The rescue concept from Hudbay Minerals contains both permanent and portable refuge stations. More than 40 years ago, Ian Cooper began his career as a member of the first-aid team in England's mines. Coming to Canada, he was asked to be part of the mines rescue, what he considers "a great honor". The Dräger expert interview series also includes talks with Christo de Klerk, General Manager of Mines Rescue Services in South Africa; Radoslaw Stach, Mining Area Manager at KGHM Polska Miedz S.A. in Poland; and Wolfgang Roehl, Manager Statutory Accident Insurance at Central Mines Rescue Organization in Germany. Superplants - How to make money by saving the environment Documentary Trailer
Research at UQ, led by Dr Antony van der Ent and Associate Professor Peter Erskine (at the Sustainable Minerals Institute) has led to the discovery of over 120 hyperaccumulator plants new to science. These unusual plants have the capacity to naturally accumulate exceptionally high concentrations of certain elements, including cobalt, nickel and zinc, in their biomass. Farming these types of plants as metal crops and harvesting their metal-rich biomass is called ‘agromining’. This innovative approach enables access to resources not accessible by conventional mining techniques and abundant low-grade sources of valuable elements.
