Hear this tune played with guitar rhythm backup (slow, medium, fast) starting at 12:25.
Guitar chords are provided on-screen at 10:12.
I teach an introduction to the tune at 11:11.
This is video 1 of 2 -- Here I revisit the two "Regular" parts of Cripple Creek (as on Page 1 of my tab sheet) with split screen and on-screen tab (My original Cripple Creek video was uploaded before I had those capabilities.
NOTE: During the video I refer to the fact that both parts repeat. On the printed sheet, they also repeat, but I wrote in the repeated parts, rather than using repeat signs and first and second endings, which can be confusing to beginners.
On Video 2, I teach variations to both the A and B parts of the tune, plus an ending lick. Find it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzR1HkHuJok
Free tab sheets (PDF) and play-along tracks (MP3) for this and many other tunes are available at my website, www.littlerockbanjo.com.
Hope you enjoy.

Here's an old video that I posted a while back ( I was still stuck in Pennsylvania's cold nasty weather!!!). Nevertheless, this is a very crucial element of Earl's playing that not a lot of people use, but is an important detail that will help take your playing to the next level.

In the office today, but hopefully you won't mind the different "scenery". :)
If you've been practicing what you've learned in the beginner series, you're probably ready for some different ideas to try in Cripple Creek.
I'll show you a few different ideas here. Get what you can, let the rest go. Don't try to do it exactly like I do. That's not the point. I'd rather hear you blazing your own trail. :)

This assumes you've worked the open string rolls and simpler chords shown in my earlier videos. I take you lick by lick through the two parts of the song -- explaining as we go what both hands are doing. I didn't write the song -- it's traditional and in the pubic domain. I know there are many video tutorials of this song on YouTube and elsewhere. Thanks for watching this one. Hope you like it.

This video is a simulated virtual jam session. The musicians in the video play Cripple Creek at multiple speeds and play backup when it's your turn to solo. The video is designed to help get you ready for real jam sessions by giving you practice in starting your solo on time and playing in time with the band. This YouTube version is shorter that the version available on the site. To watch the complete version go to http://mandolincompass.com/lessons/tabs/cripple-creek-jam-session/
If you play other instruments, such as guitar, banjo, fiddle, etc. this video works just fine too!
Good luck and happy jammin'!

Hear this tune played with guitar rhythm backup (slow, medium, fast) starting at 12:07. Chords are provided in the first "Cripple Creek Revisited" video.
This is video 2 of 2 -- Here I add variations to both parts A (one variation) and B (two variations) to the "Regular" parts from the previous video.
The A part variation is loosely based on the first half of "Banjo In The Hollow" by Doug Dillard. The original recording for this tune from 1963 can be found on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJTW2ruur-I
Both of the B part variations are from the Flatt and Scruggs "Foggy Mountain Banjo" album version of Cripple Creek.
Here I also teach a Scruggs style ending to the tune, found at 16:57.
Free tab sheets (PDF) and play-along tracks (MP3) for this and many other tunes are available at my website, www.littlerockbanjo.com.
Hope you enjoy.

Fingerstyle Banjo (Scruggs/bluegrass, Old-Time)
For complete run-through without stopping, go to 22:00
Step-by-step, lick-by-lick instruction on how to play the world's greatest bluegrass banjo song: "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" written and originally performed in 1949 by the great Earl Scruggs. This assumes that you are already playing the five-string banjo, are used to wearing your fingerpicks and have been working on your banjo licks. It's not a tune for rank beginners.
I take you through the entire main part of the tune, one phrase at a time, with superimposed tablature and isolation shots on both hands. I play it at (pretty much) full speed at the end, complete with screwed up ending lick :-)
I know it's pretty long, so hang in with me and be patient. Don't let your desire for speed result in sloppiness. Keep it clean and work up the speed gradually. Hope you enjoy.
This video is purely instructional, for educational purposes only, and is therefore, in my opinion, an exercise in fair use. No form of copyright infringement is intended in any way.
One more disclaimer: Yes I have a missing tooth. Hope that does not diminish your enjoyment of this video. I haven't gotten it fixed because I don't consider it a big deal.

Credit goes to Sawlon who uploaded the video I formed this tutorial from. Thanks Sawlon, this is the first song I learned on the Uke thanks to you!
If you want TABs please watch Sawlon's video because he's got TABS up on the screen as he's playing. I don't know how to do that and I don't have any TABS. I learned this song by Sawlon's video and on screen TABS.
I'm new to the Ukulele so when I was trying to follow Sawlon's video I got a bit lost as he plays it up to speed. So, I thought that if I had trouble keeping up and hearing the correct syncopation, other people would too.
My video is purely a slowed down version to help you learn this song. Watch this video with Sawlon's and I'm sure you'll get this tune in no time.
Im also working on Magic Ukulele Waltz which is harder but an amazing song on the Ukulele.

Look at http://mirekpatek.com/melbay/BanjoSessions_201006_Patek.pdf for some bluegrass rolls and at http://mirekpatek.com/melbay/BanjoSessions_201010_Patek.pdf for some bluegrass licks. Frailing tutorial is at http://mirekpatek.com/melbay/BanjoSessions_201008_Patek.pdf
Cripple Creek can be played not only on 5-string banjo, but also on retuned tenor banjo. DGdg tenor banjo tuning has the same open strings as gDGBd tuning of 5-string banjo (without B string). With banjo fingerpicks there can be emulated the sound of 5-string banjo fingerpicking and frailing.
Interested? Now you have the unique opportunity to become "first generation" tenor banjo fingerpicker!
