The question is, will it be the future we want? Or the future they want? Presenter: Michael Manapat, Stripe Stripe processes billions of dollars in payments a year on behalf of tens of thousands of businesses, using machine learning to detect and stop fraudulent transactions and fraudulent merchants. Our modeling workflow involves the typical “data science” tools: R and IPython for exploratory analysis, Hadoop for batch data processing, and scikit-learn for model building. However, Stripe’s production backend is written in Ruby and uses MongoDB as its data store, and this has introduced difficulties for both model training and production scoring. In this talk, I’ll describe the various choices we’ve made to bridge “main land” and “data land” and how, in the process, our model development process has gone from terrible to “ok.”

Proof-of-Work (PoW) vs. Proof-of-Stake (PoS)
Proof of work vs proof of stake explained! Here's a simplified explanation on how a PoW blockchain differs from PoS, and how it applies to Bitcoin. 4. The Byzantine Generals’ Problem Before I begin discussing proof-of-work, it’s important for you to be aware of the Byzantine Generals’ Problem, also known as the Byzantine Fault Tolerance. 3. Proof-of-work Proof-of-work is a computational protocol miners use to validate transactions in a cryptocurrency network & add the transaction to the blockchain. Put simply, miners use their computers to churn through a ton of different guesses until the computer comes up with the right answer that fits within the network’s required parameters. Different cryptocurrencies use different mathematical formulas (or functions), all of which are based on extremely complex cryptography. A hash is a certain piece of information, ranging from a letter or number to even an entire word or text file. A hash function is a cryptography-based math equation where you input a hash value into the equation then get an encrypted string of numbers & letters as a result (the hash). Let me help you visualize it to make it easier. We’ll represent our hash function as h(x) = y, where h is the mathematical equation (aka the “hash function”), x is a dynamically-changing hash value, and y is the encrypted output (or hash). In the case of Bitcoin, the hash function that’s used is known as SHA-256 (which is an acronym for Secure Hash Algorithm, which uses a 256-bit hash). The hash value that you input can be as many different numbers & letters as you’d like, but the output will always be a string of 64 letters or numbers. The reason why this is so secure is because SHA-256 is a one-way formula, meaning it’s impossible to reverse engineer your output to find out what the original hash value was. So proof-of-work is essentially just that: you have a given hash function you’re required to use along with a 64-digit answer; and as a miner, you set your computer to “work” by plugging in a bunch of different hash values in an attempt to guess the right answer. Once you do so, you’re able to validate a transaction, add it to a block, and get rewarded for your efforts in the form of Bitcoin, which are released as block rewards. Think of mining as simply a race to guess the right answer. The miner who gets the right answer first gets the reward. 2. Proof-of-Stake The proof-of-stake protocol differs from proof-of-work in the sense that mining power is determined by the number of coins you hold of that particular cryptocurrency; the more coins you hold, the more mining power you have. Mining power with proof-of-work, on the other hand, is determined by how powerful your computer is & how much available electricity you have at your disposal that you can direct towards mining. In proof-of stake, holding ownership of the coins demonstrates your “stake” in the network. Methods have been implemented to grant smaller miners a chance to mint the next block, such as randomized block selection & coin age based selection. There’s also the option of running a masternode, which I discussed in my previous video on hard forks. One of the advantages of the proof-of-stake protocol is that it solves the Tragedy of Commons issue, which states that eventually, at some point in time, once all 21,000,000 Bitcoin have been rewarded & are in circulation, Bitcoin miners will be less motivated to mine in the Bitcoin network since there will no longer be any block rewards at that point, and the only way they’ll only be able to earn Bitcoin is from transaction fees. Less miners means more opportunity for an attack on the network, since it’ll be easier to control 51% of the network’s computational power. Proof-of-stake solves that by putting your own coins & investment at stake. 1. Which is better? Both protocols have their own advantages & disadvantages. Proof-of-work allows for not just miners, but also developers & the coin’s community members to vote on potential changes to be implemented into the network. But on the flipside, proof-of-work requires exorbitant amounts of electricity to run mining rigs. As of 2017, the Bitcoin mining network used more electricity in a year than all of Ireland as a whole. Each Bitcoin transaction uses an average of 300 kilowatt hours of electricity, which is enough to bring 36,000 kettles full of water to a boil. Proof-of-stake, on the other hand, is said to be more energy-efficient than proof-of-work, while at the same time more secure. But its biggest disadvantage is that the miners (or stakeholders) are the ones who hold all the power. Unlike in proof-of-work, miners able to theoretically implement whatever changes they so choose without having to get approval from developers or community members. This contradicts the coin’s supposed “decentralized nature” by potentially putting all the voting power & control in the hands of a centralized few.

Williams Building The Advanced Networks Colloquium Two recent information theoretic variations on the theme of patterns in security Muriel Médard Cecil H. Green Professor Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department Massachusetts Institute of Technology Abstract We overview two different sets of results based upon the effect of patters in security. In the first part, we consider limits of inference, a problem that emerges when we seek to ascertain what limits to privacy we can expect when machine learning algorithms, whose theoretical basis often relies on principal inertia components, are applied to mining publicly available data that may be related, in loosely known ways, to private data. Lower bounds for the average probability of error of estimating a hidden variable X given an observation of a correlated random variable Y, and Fano’s inequality in particular, play a central role in information theory. We present a lower bound for the average estimation error based on the marginal distribution of X and the principal inertias of the joint distribution matrix of X and Y, providing thus limits to privacy. Furthermore, we investigate how to answer a fundamental question in inference and privacy: given an observation Y, can we estimate a function f(X) of the hidden random variable X with an average error below a certain threshold? We provide a general method for answering this question using an approach based on rate-distortion theory. In the second part, we consider recent results on guesswork, the characterization of the process sequences such as passwords. We note that, what may appear as being even slight differences in distributions of these sequences may lead to differences that are exponential in guesswork, leading to possible surprising results, such as the failure of the oft-assumed uniformity of compressed sources, and the fact that friendly jamming of an intended user may be advantageous. We conclude with our recently defined notion of inscrutability rate, used to quantify the asymptotic difficulty of guessing U out of V secret strings, Unexpectedly, the inscrutability rate of any finite-order Markov string-source with hidden statistics remains the same as the unhidden case, i.e., the asymptotic value of hiding the statistics per each symbol is vanishing. The Future of Computational Journalism
Data science and algorithms are reshaping how the news is discovered and reported At a recent event bringing together voices from the School of Engineering and the School of Humanities and Sciences, two Stanford professors engaged in a moderated discussion about the evolving field of computational journalism. Jay Hamilton, the Hearst Professor of Communication and director of the Journalism Program, and Maneesh Agrawala, professor of computer science and director of the Brown Institute for Media Innovation, shared their complementary perspectives on the many questions facing journalism today and where they might lead tomorrow. The conversation centered on how converging social currents and disruptive technologies have roiled newsrooms on the local, national and international levels. Computational journalism, Hamilton said, can refer to the set of tools that journalists use to discover, tell or distribute stories. But it’s also “reporting by, through and about algorithms.” The Associated Press, for example, writes about 4,000 stories by algorithm each time companies’ quarterly earnings reports come out — a massive increase from the 300 or so companies that can be covered by human reporters. In addition to such computer-assisted reporting, Agrawala spoke about how computers can be used to synthesize audio and video stories and create visualizations that provide critical context for data. The two professors also spoke about the great need for journalists to find ways to hold algorithms — like the ones that curate our newsfeeds or influence public policies — accountable. “One of the questions that we face as a society is understanding some of the algorithms that are delivering information to us,” Agrawala said. Hamilton agreed, adding that the biggest problem he sees facing journalism right now are the stories that get missed due to the collapse of the business models of local newspapers. “If you look across the country, there are city councils that don’t have a reporter covering them, there are school boards voting and making decisions and nobody is watching. So I think that’s something where computational journalism can really make an impact,” he said. “If you have a strong interest in engineering and data, try to help us figure out the stories that go untold, especially at the local level.”

Then a parallel SDSCM algorithm is implemented through a Hadoop MapReduce framework. In the case study, the proposed parallel SDSCM algorithm enjoys a fast running speed when compared with the other methods. Furthermore, We provide some marketing strategies in accordance with the clustering results, and a simplified marketing activity is simulated to ensure profit maximization.

City Without Chimneys - The City Communal Aspiration System 1. Problem: Communal systems for removal and reprocessing of wastes of two types - liquid (municipal sewage lines) and solid (collection and removal of wastes) - are operated in populated localities.Gas emissions are produced by each economic entity individually - whether they are a large industrial enterprise, a boiler-house or a household (dwelling house).For the time being there is no possibility for full system control and neutralization of dust and gas wastes because there is no system in the physical form which would enable comprehensive receipt of exit gases from all the city sources for further processing thereof. 2. The Problem Solving Strategy: It is for the first time when a principally new holistic approach to “cleaning/treatment” of all city dust and gas emissions (wastes) is proposed which consists in creation of a City Communal Aspiration System containing a city communal aspiration network (gas outlets) for receipt/transportation of exhaust (flue) gases and aplant for utilization of such wastes connected to such network. In other words, it is proposed to organize a “City without chimneys” (Figure). 3. Advantages and Technical Results of the Proposed Solution: - First– Ecological advantage: prevention of the air basin, water reservoirs and soil against pollution by means of radical reduction or liquidation of emission of gas venting in the air. - Second –The system as an object integrating individual discrete elements is oriented towards resource saving and continuous objective control (counters) of gas emissions from all economic entities. - Third– The city planning project is facilitated. Chimneys (an architectural "irritator") will be removed; possibilities for zoning, design and esthetic solutions will be expanded. The suggested concept complies with the ideology of the “ecological city” and “city of short ways”. - Fourth – The system enables to utilize physical, chemical and kinetic potential of flue gases. - Fifth – By inclusion of a counteragent into the common aspiration structure the society will avoid the risk (temptation) of unauthorized emissions which exists in case of individual operation of this entity out of the system. - Sixth – Risks of formation of new “unexpected” harmful substances in the air will be reduced. The probability of formation of acid fogs and acid precipitations will be reduced. - Seventh – The possibility appears to resolve problems associated with ecological aggression (see the Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution). - Eighth – Thepossibilities for transfer of production facilities from one type of fuel to another will be expanded. 4. Description of the City Communal Aspiration System: An option of gas processing at the utilization station may be presented in the following structural sequence: - 1 -Controlof composition and amount of received gas wastes. - 2 -Gas treatment: removal of dust, mechanical particles.In this block withdrawal and utilization of heat may be effected through a heat exchanger. - 3 -Vacuum fans (exhausters). - 4 -Utilization: here gas separation, filtration, neutralization, synthesis, pyrolysis and other operations may be realized with application of both well-known and future technologies. = Most of the above listed technical solutions and technologies have already been applied locally at emissions objects on the large-scale basis. This fact will materially facilitate integration of such components into the proposed system. At the exit (output) from the utilization station, for example, three flows may be organized: - The first flow (CCS), utilization of carbon dioxide-these may be geological technologies with underground pumping ofСО2to oil and gas deposits, unused coal deposits etc. The technology “CCS”– Carboncaptureandstorage - has been already activelycommercially used. - The second block (R)-return (recycling) to the “production/consumption” circulation of exhaust gases (mixtures thereof). -The third flow (P&D) - batching of gases for supply and use. - Importance and practical value of the idea: Elimination of certain ecological difficulties associated with climate change and urbanism. - Practicability: Technological and scientific-technical level of society development is sufficient for implementation of the idea and shall be enforced by the organizational component.

Anomaly detection is important for data cleaning, cybersecurity, and robust AI systems. This talk will review recent work in our group on (a) benchmarking existing algorithms, (b) developing a theoretical understanding of their behavior, (c) explaining anomaly "alarms" to a data analyst, and (d) interactively re-ranking candidate anomalies in response to analyst feedback. Algebraic Techniques for Multilingual Document Clustering
Google Tech Talks January 25, 2011 Presented by Brett Bader. ABSTRACT Multilingual documents pose difficulties for clustering by topic, not least because translating everything to a common language is not feasible with a large corpus or many languages. This presentation will address those difficulties with a variety of novel algebraic methods for efficiently clustering multilingual text documents, and brieflyillustrate their implementation via high performance computing. The methods use a multilingual parallel corpus as a 'Rosetta Stone' from which algorithmic variations (including statistical morphological analysis to bypass the need for stemming) of Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) are able to learn concepts in term space. New documents are projected into this concept space to produce language-independent feature vectors for subsequent use in similarity calculations or machine learning applications. Our experiments show that the new methods have better performance than LSA, and possess some interesting and counter-intuitive properties. Brett W. Bader received his Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Colorado at Boulder, studying higher-order methods for optimization and solving systems of nonlinear equations. In 2003, Brett received the John von Neumann Research Fellowship at Sandia National Laboratories, where he now develops algorithms for multi-way data analysis and machine learning for informatics applications in networks and text.
