Divisions of Plant Kingdom

13:10
All the plants belonging to various groups are classified under kingdom plant or plant kingdom . Based on the system of classification proposed by A.W.EICHLER(1875 -78) , the plant kingdom is divided into two sub - kingdoms . They are : 1. Cryptogamae . 2. Phanerogamae. CRYPTOGAMAE (cryptogams): This sub-kingdom is sub-divided into three divisions: (a) Thallophyta (b) Bryphyta (c) pteridophyta A. THALLOPHYTA (thallophytes): Thallophyta is the most primitive and the largest division of Cryptogams. The plant body is not differentiated into root , stem and leaves and such a plant body is termed as thallus . The thalloid plant body is either unicellular or multicellular. The division thallophyta is classified into two sub - divitions: (1) Algae and (2) Fungi 1. ALGAE: Alage are chlorophyll bearing thalloid , autotrophic and largely aqutotrophic and largely aquatic (fresh water and marine water) plants . They also occur in a variety of other habitats:moist stones ,soils wood .they are unicellular also occur in association wiht fungi to form Lichens. EXAMPLE: Spirogyra . (2)FUNGI: Fungi are achlorophyllous (non-green) heterotrophic thallophytes . They live as saprophytes with algae to form lichens. Some fungi grown in close association with roots o f vascular plants forming mycorrhizae. EXAMPEL:Rhizopus. B . BRYOPHTA(Bryophytes): Bryophytes are chlophytes are chlorophyllous , autotrophic, embryophic and atracheophytic cryptogams. They are mostly found on damp and shady places. They are called amphibians of plant kingdom. exampel;Funaria. C.PTERIDOPHYTA(pteridophytes): Pteridophytes are chlorophyllous, autotrophic embryophytic and tracheophytic cryptogams. They are the non flowering plants possesing vascular tissues . Hence they are called VASCULAR CRYPTOGAMS. EXAMPEL:pteris. 1PHANEROGAMAE(phanerogams) : Phanerogams are flower bearing ,seed producing tracheoptytes . This sub kingdom has only one division SPERMATOPHYTA. 1) Gymnospermae and 2) Angiospermae 1) GYMNOSPERMAE (gymnosperms): Gymnosperms are phanerogams or spermatophytes without ovary and fruit . The seeds are naked without a fruit wall. EXAMPEL:cycas , pinus , Gnetum. 2)ANGIOSPERMAE(angiosperms):Angiosperms are the flowering plants in which the seeds are enclosed by fruits. The angiosperms are divided into two classes :the dicotyledons and the monocotylesons . DICOTYLEDONS : They have two cotyledon in their seeds . Example: Maize , sorghum ,etc . Cryptogams (Cryptogamae)

05:19
Let’s learn about cryptogams (Cryptogamae) today. Cryptogams refer to the flowerless and seedless plants. What are cryptogams? Cryptogams are flowerless and seedless plants that is these plants bear no flowers and fruits. The word cryptogams (cryptogamae) means hidden reproduction. It is made up of two Greek words “kryptos” which means concealed and “gamos” which means marriage. Cryptogams include all non-seed bearing plants. A.W. Eichler in 1883, classified the whole plant kingdom into two sub-kingdoms such as cryptogams and phanerogams. This is the traditional of classification of plants. Characteristic Features of Cryptogamae: 1. These are lower plants and bear no flowers, seeds and fruits. 2. These reproduce vegetatively, asexually and sexually. 3. Vegetative reproduction takes place cell division or fragmentation while Asexual reproduction takes place by the means of spores. 4. Sexual reproduction takes place by fusion of male and female gametes. Sexual preproduction can be of isogamous, anisogamous and oogamous type. Isogamy is seen in primitive cryptogams while oogamy takes place in advanced cryptogams. 5. Advanced cryptogams such as liverworts, mosses, pteridophytes and algae undergo alternation of generation i.e. these go through two phases to complete their life cycle. The two phases are sporophytic phase and gametophytic phase. 6. Sporophytic phase is characterized by asexual reproduction while in gametophytic phase sexual reproduction takes place. 7. The sporophytic phase is the diploid stage while the gametophytic phase is the haploid stage. 8. The two phases occur in alternation i.e. one after the other. Classification of Cryptogamae: Cryptogams are further divided into 3 groups: 1. Thallophyta 2. Bryophyta 3. Pteridophytes What are Thyllophyta? These include lower cryptogams such as algae, fungi, bacteria, slime molds and lichens. These are the simplest plants where the body is not differentiated into roots, leaves and stems. The simplest thallophyte are bacteria. These are aquatic plants that can grow in fresh as well as marine water. These lack vascular system. Reproduction can be vegetative by fragmentation, asexual by forming asexual spores and sexually by forming unicellular sex organs. What are Bryophyta? Bryophyta are photosynthetic thallus-like plant body with no vascular system. These are terrestrial plants with some plants being aquatic. These are generally found in damp and moist places. These include liverworts, horned liverworts and mosses. These have rhizoids (root like structure) for anchorage. What are Pteridophytes? These are photosynthetic vascular plants that have well differentiated plant body. These are also known as vascular cryptogams. These are most advanced of all cryptogams. Pteridophytes include Ferns, Horsetails and Clubmosses. Let’s see what we learned. 1. Cryptogams are seedless and flowerless plants. 2. Cryptogams are divided into 3 subdivisions: Thallophyta, Bryophyta and Pteridophyta. 3. Thallophyta are the primitive cryptogams that have thallus-like plant body and are aquatic. 4. Bryophyta are also thallus-like structure that can grow on both land and water. 5. Pteridophyta are advanced form of cryptogams that have well-differentiated plant body with vascular system. In the most accepted five kingdom classifications by Whittaker, bacteria are placed as a separate kingdom known as Kingdom Monera and not included under the plantae kingdom. In the same way, fungi are also excluded from plant kingdom and placed separately as Kingdom Fungi as these lack chlorophylls which is the characteristic feature of Plantae Kingdom. Pteridophytes or Pteridophyta, in the broad interpretation of the term (or sensu lato), are vascular plants (plants with xylem and phloem) that reproduce and disperse via spores. Because they produce neither flowers nor seeds, they are referred to as cryptogams. The group includes ferns, horsetails, clubmosses, spikemosses and quillworts. These do not form a monophyletic group, because ferns and horsetails are more closely related to seed plants than to lycophytes (clubmosses, spikemosses and quillworts). Therefore, pteridophytes are no longer considered to form a valid taxon, but the term is still used as an informal way to refer to ferns (monilophytes) and lycophytes, and some recent authors have used the term to refer strictly to the monilophytes.

Kingdom Plantae – Kingdom Plantae Definition and Kingdom Plantae Divisions

08:58
Welcome viewers, today, we are going to study about the Kingdom Plantae also known as the Plant Kingdom. In this video, we will learn - what is Kingdom Plantae, what is definition of Kingdom Plantae and classification of Kingdom Plantae. Characteristic Features of the Kingdom Plantae are as follows: All the plants that we see around us are included in one kingdom i.e. the kingdom Plantae. Plants are multicellular, eukaryotic, photosynthetic living organisms. All plants contain chlorophyll that helps in photosynthesis. They are autotrophs as they make their own food. Plant kingdom is broadly divided into two sub-kingdoms: Cryptogamae and Phanerogamae. On the basis of sub-groups, plant kingdom is divided into five sub-groups: Thallophyta, Bryophyta, Pteridophyta, Gymnosperm and Angiosperm where Thallophyta, Bryophyta amd Pteridophyta are included in Cryptogams while Gymnosperms and Angiosperms are included in Phanerogams. The Kingdom plantae is divided into two sub-kingdoms: Cryptogams and Phanerogams. Cryptogams are again sub divided into 3 groups i.e. Thallophyta, Bryophyta and Pteridophyta. Similarly, Phanerogams are also divided into 2 groups i.e. Gymnosperms and Angiosperms. Cryptogams are the seedless plants while Phanerogams bear seeds. Thallophyta and Bryophyta have thallus like body and do not have vascular tissues while Pteridophytes have well distinguished plant parts and vascular tissues. In case of Phanerogams, Gymnosperms have naked seeds and Angiosperms have covered seeds. Moving on to Cryptogams. Till now we know that Cryptogams are seedless plants and lowers plants that bear no flowers, seeds and fruits. These reproduce by vegetative, asexual and sexual means. Vegetative reproduction takes place cell division or fragmentation. Asexual reproduction takes place by the means of spores. Sexual reproduction takes place by fusion of male and female gametes. Cryptogams are divided into 3 groups such as thallophyta, bryophyta and pteridophyta depending upon whether they have well differentiated plant body or not. Thallophyta and bryophyta have undifferentiated plant body and no vascular tissues while pteridophyte have differentiated plant body with vascular tissues. Now let’s see the characteristic features of Thallophyta. Thallophyta include lower Cryptogams such as algae, fungi, bacteria, slime molds and lichens. They have undifferentiated plant body known as “thallus”. These are aquatic plants that lack vascular system. Here, reproduction takes place by fragmentation, spore formation and unicellular sex organs. They show alternation of generation. Let’s see what we have learned today. We have learned so far that, Plant kingdom is also known as kingdom Plantae that include all photosynthetic, multicellular living organisms. Kingdom Plantae is divided into 2 sub-kingdoms: Cryptogams and Phanerogams. Cryptogams are seedless plants that are further divided into Thallophyta, Bryophyta and Pteridophyta. Thallophyta are thallus like plant body that are aquatic in nature. Bryophyta are also thallus like body but can live in water and on land. Pteridophytes are plant body divided into root, shoot and leaves and have vascular system. Phanerogams are seed bearing plants that are divided into Gymnosperms and Angiosperms. Gymnosperms contain naked seeds and further divided into 4 groups. Angiosperms are most advanced plants that have covered seeds and flowers. These are again divided into two groups.
