Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Cost: Varies Steps: 1. The terms hardwood and softwood do not refer to density but rather to the type of tree- hardwoods come from deciduous trees and softwoods from conifers. 2. Softwoods grow fast and straight so they are a good option for framing material like fir and spruce. The less knots, the stronger the wood. These woods are typically dried in a kiln to prevent warping and shrinkage. 3. Some softwoods like pine are inexpensive and can be used for interior trim, but they can warp and twist. 4. A hardwood like maple is used for cabinets whereas oak is a good choice for flooring. Both of these are more common hardwoods. 5. Fine hardwoods are denser and include species like walnut and mahogany. They’re used for balusters and decking and are more expensive than common hardwoods. 6. Exotic hardwoods like purple heart and zebra wood are the most expensive and usually used for accents on fine furniture. The most famous and oft used example of this concept is that of balsa wood which, despite being literally one of the least dense (and hence softest) woods of all, is technically classified as hardwood. Likewise, the wood of the yew tree, which is classified as being a softwood, is a great deal tougher than many hardwoods including several types of oak. So what’s going on here? Workshop: http://www.chicalo.com/beachcombing-cedar-workshop Shake Block Cutter - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003CFB3T2?ie=UTF8&tag=shakeblockcutter-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B003CFB3T2 - Helicopter Timber Salvage - Tales from the Frontlines Welcome to beach combing 101. We will be salvaging driftwood from beaches and making it into valuable roofing products; western red cedar shakes. Not all of the driftwood on a beach is good for making handsplit cedar shakes. We will have to search through it, identifying the different tree species, and selecting only the red cedar. Not only that, but we must find pieces of red cedar, known as slabs, that are strips of very large cedar trees. This will give us the quality of wood that is needed for the making of handsplit shakes. All of the driftwood behind me, on this beach, is the result of logging. Trees are harvested, transported to the ocean, then through the ocean via log booms or log carrying barges. Occasionally this harvested wood slips out of the log boom or, or falls off the log carrying barge, floats around at the whim of the tide and currents, and finally ends up here. On the beach. As you can see behind me that driftwood comes in all shapes and sizes. Much of it is ground up on the beach from the constant wave action. This makes some of it difficult to identify. Some has been here for years, while other wood is just arriving now. The extreme high tides of winter shifts wood from one beach to another. A rocky or pebble beach is preferred as embedded sand from a sandy beach can make chainsawing the driftwood difficult. Some beaches contain a large amount of salvageable wood, others contain none. Much of it is luck, and whether someone else has salvaged the beach before you got there. This item may or may not be western red cedar. When salvaging it I will cut into it and sample the smell of the wood to be sure. Showing a wide grain and a few knots, this item does not look too promising. I may be able to get two twenty-four inch slices from it, between the knots and other defects. This item is certainly western red cedar and is a short slab from a very large tree. One end is slightly checked, or cracked, but the other shows signs of promise. Before cutting I will lift it from the sand and remove any chainsaw dulling sand and gravel. When beach combing one does not only find driftwood. All sorts of floating debris washes up on beaches, such as this piece of styro foam and this bouncy ball. I am sure you have heard of the rash of human feet inside shoes that have been washing up on beaches in the area around Vancouver, BC, Canada. Much of what you find is simply garbage, but sometimes you get lucky, or unlucky in the case of the human feet. This item, the most promising yet on this beach, is typical of what we are looking for. It may look like a small tree but in reality it is a strip of a cedar tree that could be over 1000 years old. Virtually free of defects, this piece will almost certainly yield an adequate amount of fine handsplit cedar shakes. This fine specimen is long, straight and free of defects. Unfortunately it is yellow cedar, or sometimes known as cypress. Yellow cedar only grows at higher altitudes and is most likely from the central Vancouver island region. Generally stringy and tough to split, this piece is better suited to be cut up into lumber using a band saw mill. The rope attached indicates that it has already been claimed by another beach comber. The unwritten rule clearly states that if a rope is attached, holding it to the shore, the piece is already spoken for. The logistics of getting this piece to a saw mill is far more difficult than salvaging the small and easy to handle cedar blocks used when producing hand split shakes. When trying to tell the difference between red and yellow cedar, remember this; sometimes red cedar can appear yellowish. If its yellow and you cant tell the difference, then its red cedar. Yellow cedar is a very distinctive yellow and cannot be confused with red cedar.

Ask This Old House general contractor Tom Silva and host Kevin O’Connor build a console table using a maple slab with a live edge on it. Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Time: 2 days Cost: $300 Skill Level: Moderate Tools List for Building a Live Edge Slab Table: Track saw Hammer Chisel Grinder Palm sander Clamps Router Drill Shopping List: Live edge slab Hairpin legs 80-120 grit sandpaper 320 grit sandpaper Wood glue Scrap wood to use for rails and jig Wood screws Cheap paintbrush Rags Amber shellac Tung Oil Steps: 1. Before doing any work, determine the orientation of the table. Decide whether the live edge should face up or face down, see which face of the slab will look nicest on top, etc. For decorative tables, Tom likes having the live edge face up so it can be really celebrated. For more functional tables, like a dining room table, Tom likes the live edge down so there’s no gap between the flat surface of the table and the person sitting at the table. Mark the sides in the middle that will need to be cut. 2. Lay the slabs on a workbench with the sides you plan to cut facing the outside of the table. Cut straight edges on both sides of each slab with the track saw. 3. Put the slabs back in the correct orientation to check the size. 4. Remove the bark from the live edge using a hammer and chisel. 5. Once the bark is off, smooth out the edges with a grinder. 6. Sand the live edges with the palm sander. Do a few passes, starting with the rough sandpaper and work up to a smoother one. 7. Generously apply a coat of wood glue to both straight edges of the slabs and clamp the pieces together to dry. 8. Once the glue has dried, cut the rough edges on the short sides of the table with a track saw. 9. Sand the top of the table until the glue joint is perfectly blended. 10. Flip the table upside down and mark the desired location for the legs. 11. Cut two pieces of scrap wood to equal size and height and clamp them to the workbench around the tabletop. 12. Make a jig using the scrap wood to hold a router that’s wide enough to slide across the two rails. 13. Determine the appropriate depth to set the router by placing the jig over the four marks for the legs. Lower the router to the deepest point on the four marks. 14. Use the router to cut out four even sections based on the marks. 15. Drill holes in the table for the four legs. Then, screw the legs into the drilled holes with the wood screws. 16. Flip the table right side up on its legs. Apply a coat of amber shellac with the paintbrush to seal it. Let the shellac dry. 17. Lightly sand the table with the 320 grit sandpaper. 18. Apply three coats of tung oil to the table with a rag. Be sure to put the rag in a bucket of water when you’re finished. Let it dry overnight. 19. Apply three more coats of tung oil. Resources: Tom recommends locating a local lumber yard or mill to find live edge slabs. A quick Internet search should help you identify the one closest to you. Give them a call, talk about the project you’d like to do, and see what types of wood they have. Tom and Kevin used a slab of maple from The Rustic Wood Shop (https://therusticwoodshop.space/). For a more modern look, Tom ordered hairpin metal legs to attach to the bottom of the table. He used the 48” I-Semble Hairpin Table Legs, available at Rockler Woodworking and Hardware (http://www.rockler.com/). To adhere the two boards together, Tom used wood glue, manufactured by Gorilla Glue (https://www.gorillatough.com/). From the cherry tree to a live edge, breadboard end, table. Just a quick video show the process from start to finish. A note about the breadboard ends: only the middle tennons are glued and the mortises toward the outside are large to allow for wood movement, mostly shrinkage in this case as the wood still has a lot of moisture. Have fun woodworking and good luck!

Waxing wood with fine steel wool cleans, finishes and polishes beautifully your old and new wood furniture. http://www.mrhardware.com/ It is the final step to presenting your home to friends or finalizing your woodworking project. It is used on water based coatings, oil based polyurethane or varnish, film finishes like lacquer or shellac, lacquer and other coatings. A wax rub gives wood a richer look, an even finish, a warmer feel and resists water, not to mention a great shine IMPORTANT The longer you let a new finish cure, the easier it will be to rub it, and that goes for any sheen. IMPORTANT You can’t rub a satin sheen up to a gloss sheen, but you will improve a shine greatly with polishing. IMPORTANT You must have enough of a finish for this to work. You cannot polish bare wood. Dust in the air makes it hard to get a clean, smooth finish in any environment, no matter how it’s applied. You need a dedicated clean room, and even then, the finish can dry with particles or bush strokes. So what chance do we that finish in the garage or basement wood shops have? Steel wool wax rubbing removes those problems and smooth out the sheen differences. Also, a waxed steel wool finish just looks better. The rubbed shine just looks better. The gloss from a spray gun, brush or pad simply isn’t the same: it is smoother, reflects more light, and is deeper and more. By rubbing in the direction of the grain, scratches on older furniture are filled to refract light in an even pattern. The steel wool leaves the surface flat, with a glossy, reflective surface without any scratches visible. And the feel of the furniture is luxurious. Wood is a living thing, and is more than appearance. You should experience the wood. People touch the wood, hold it. You can’t get that from Formica. Here’s how you do it. It takes work to apply the wax in long strokes, putting pressure on the steel wool to clean and polish the wood. Use quality steel wool as they aren’t all same and may be rough. Not all steel wool is created equal. Rub with the grain of the wood. Start with 400 grit sandpaper with paint thinner as a lubricant to remove a small layer of finish to clean and smooth the surface of dust, scratches and marks Fill the pad of 00 steel wool with paste wax. It will lubricate the steel wool as well as apply the wax deep into the imperfections for a smoother surface. Don’t miss rubbing the ends of the wood, and keep going in the grain’s direction. Flip the pad over as the pad gets worn. Add more wax as you go along. Use long stokes in straight lines with the grain, working the wax. The entire wood surface should get at least 7 rubs or passes. Then use 0000 steel wool to remove the excess wax and polish the wood. Apply lighter pressure when removing the wax. Use the same application pad more wax if needed. Too much wax will show if rubbing your finger on the surface leaves a smudge. Cold water can be used to harden the excess wax so it can be removed easier with the four zero steel wool. At the end, you can use a clean cloth for buffing off any residue wax to get a glossy surface. I don’t, but you can.

It covers everything from developing a business plan to selecting niches in the woodworking market to balancing costs versus wood profits. The wood profits guidebook also discusses how to find customers locally and nationally, and then discusses how to price your products so that you can maximize wood profits without driving customers away. In this wood profits review I noticed that the section on developing a woodworking business plan is especially helpful. Often, people tend to get excited and rush into new business ventures with dreams of making money quickly, but then fail because they did not plan out the business properly. Jim Morgan in his wood profits emphasizes the importance of creating a solid business model. For example, he outlines that your business model should focus on a particular line of products or a niche. He then says that those products will determine the type and quality of wood you will need to purchase. The quality of the wood will affect the overall price point, which will affect your customer base. All of these factors are important to consider, because you want to make sure that the wood projects you create fit your customer base's needs and budgets. Jim Morgan teaches you how to determine those factors. I also found in this wood profits review that the eBook of over 500 detailed plans to be an excellent resource. Even someone with as limited woodworking experience will be able to follow the plans and create a decent product. I honestly feel that Wood Profits is a good value for the money. Especially for the 60 days money back guarantee. Thanks for reading this wood profits review . And don't forget you have a 100% 60 days Money Back Guarantee. http://www.thewoodprofits.com Wood Profits, Wood Profits Review, wood Profits download, wood Profits program, wood Profits scam, wood Profits review, wood Profits Review Wood Profits tips, wood Profits tricks, wood Profits program review, wood Profits program reviews, wood Profits pdf, wood Profits bonus, wood profits review Jim Morgan, wood Profits reviews scam, wood Profits review scam, wood Profits discount price, wood Profits discounts price, review of Wood Profits, reviews of Wood Profits

With Big Box stores, quality is not always available and sizes are fixed, so fitting them in can be awkward. Our showroom displays samples of furniture and some of the cabinets available in different woods, finishes (such as painted or distressed). You are welcome to bring in or e-mail your ideas for assessment and pricing. We also offer in-home assessment for measurements and pricing on built-in units. Installation is also available on built ins, or you can choose to do it yourself, as it is often quite simple. Custom is the way to go Trying to match or compliment existing cabinetry or furnishings can be difficult and finding the right finish, colour, type of wood, or just the detail of your existing furniture, but that's not a problem most of the time when you have your pieces hand-crafted to precise specifications. At Century Wood Products, we match all the trim

In this video, woodworker Kelly Dunton demonstrates how to stain a white oak table by exposing it to ammonia fumes. Unlike most finishing techniques, ammonia fumes react chemically with tannins in the wood causing it to permanently change color. The technique was popularized by Gustav Stickley and other furniture makers of his era. ***Safety*** The ammonium hydroxide used for fuming contains around 28% ammonia compared to less than 5% in household ammonia. You should take extra precautions when handling this material, also known as aqua (or aqueous) ammonia. Avoid eye or skin contact with the ammonia by using goggles or a full-face shield, and protective gloves. A respirator with cartridges designed for ammonia is ideal, but basic charcoal vapor filters will reduce the exposure. If you don't have a respirator, use a fan and stay upwind of the fumes. Use a glass or plastic container rather than a metal one to hold the ammonia while fuming. Make sure that you don't use an aluminum pie plate because the ammonia will dissolve it. After you have finished fuming, dispose of the used ammonia in a large bucket of water, which can then be poured on the ground or on the compost heap. It makes a good fertilizer. ***Where to find high percent ammonia*** You should be able to find this type of ammonia locally. This type of ammonia is used in the manufacture of blueprints, so if you having problems finding the high percent ammonia, other possible sources include office-supply stores, or you can purchase it online at www.hvchemical.com for just under $20 a gallon.

Renew and Revive a Piece of Furniture Whether it's something you bought at a thrift store or flea market, or just something you already had around, refreshing a piece of furniture is a rewarding experience. It's wonderful to both watch and experience the transformation from old and beat-up to new and enhanced. As with many projects, preparation is everything, and with furniture, surfaces must be properly prepared before staining or painting. This is a great weekend afternoon project to pursue outdoors when the weather is good. A non-windy day would be helpful if you're going to spray paint. ___________________________________________ What you'll need: Drop cloth and/or newspapers Gloves and a dust mask to protect yourself. Safety glasses are always a good idea too, if you have some. Sandpaper of various grades and coarseness (some are sold in a variety pack) Turpentine or other similar cleaners (a greener product with low fumes was used in this video) An old paint brush to remove dust from sanding. A couple of clean cotton rags, such as old t-shirts, especially if you decide to use an oil or stain finish. A finish of your choice: an oil finish and less than one can of black spray paint were used here but you might choose a stain plus varnish or other type of paint(s). The amount will depend on the size of your project and how many coats it might take to cover or renew the old finish. _____________________________________________ Begin with checking your furniture surfaces. Older furniture usually has heavier finishes and might require more effort as well as a heavier sandpaper. Some intricate woodwork on older pieces might be best removed with a liquid paint remover. Always ask a professional if you have any questions about antique furniture pieces before you start your project -- you may harm the furniture by painting or restoring it. Look for the number on the back of the sandpaper and choose a lower, which is a rougher, coarser, grain of sandpaper to remove old finishes from the furniture, or to prepare the surfaces for painting. Increase your grade or number of sandpaper to a finer and finer as you finish your surface preparation. Sanding with the finer grade should remove grooves and roughness. Fold your sandpaper in quarters or use a sanding block to make the sandpaper more manageable. Some electric sanders or Dremel-type tools may also be used if needed. Wear a dust mask over your nose to protect yourself from any toxic dust in the old finish, sand dust ,or if spray painting. Always sand with the direction and grain of the wood, never against it. Some areas, where grains meet, might take extra time and attention. While sanding, tap the paper against something to remove excess dust and use an old paint brush to remove larger amounts of dust from surfaces. When sanding is complete, use your old paintbrush to remove as much dust as you can, then wipe all surfaces with Turpentine or other similar solvent cleaners on a good cotton rag to clean. Clean well and don't forget corners and other nooks and crannies. Do not use water-based cleaners or soaps. Let the Turpentine or other solvent evaporate to dry. It doesn't take long and should be visible when dry. Especially if spray painting: cover and protect any surfaces you don't want painted with newspaper or painters tape. If spray painting, follow the manufacturer directions on the container. Test out a few shots first, a distance from your furniture, to get the feel of how strong the spray is -- spraying too close to your furniture may result in drips and runs. Be sure to look at your furniture from a lot of different angles to be sure you didn't miss any areas. An oil finish also was used in this example, which easily wipes on with a cloth, and dries fairly fast. Some furniture woods might require at least two coats. Follow the manufacturer directions on the container. A retail professional in your local hardware or home store can provide you with additional assistance in determining what kind of finish would be best for your furniture renewal project. Of course this is only one of many ways to revive and refresh an older piece of furniture and perhaps it will give you some ideas for your own project. One way to ease this process is to first make a list of the expectations that you have regarding this type of furniture. Knowing exactly what your needs and wants are will help you in comparing different models and manufacturers.

And If you’re currently in the sourcing process, you can also benefit from our selection factory services in Indonesia to help you narrow down your search of potential suppliers. Why should you inspect your shipment before it leaves Indonesia? If you find a high defect rate in an order of goods received from your Indonesian supplier, what should you do? Chances are, you may be have to rework the affected units and possibly push back the delivery date to your customers. By doing so, you may be spending a lot of time and money fixing your goods as well as upsetting your customers with the delay. But you can greatly limit the number of defective units received and prevent other problems by conducting product inspection in Indonesia before your order leaves the factory. Pre-shipment inspection at the factory allows you to find any defects and other issues and address them with your supplier right away. This typically saves importers from having to rework products after receiving an order, in addition to limiting unnecessary shipping delays. Some importers choose to rely on their factory’s own QC staff to conduct product inspection in Indonesia. But most experienced importers insist on hiring a professional third-party inspector to visit their supplier’s factory and inspect on their behalf. Third-party inspectors typically provide more thorough and impartial reporting. Asemblance is a thriller, horror, PT type game. Honestly i'm finding it difficult to explain better than the kotaku article i found it on without spoiling it. Just imagine PT with less abrasive jump scares and swap it in for a more psychological element of threat instead. I found myself feeling uneasy and i ruined several pairs of shorts during the game. Staining wood is very common but not many woodworkers are familiar with " Wood Dye". There are many reasons why dyes can be better than stains, and there are reasons to use to use stains, the primary one is that they are more colorfast under the intense light of the sun. To see an example of one person's choice of using dyes, click on the link to see "The Vintage Vox Project", and if you are a musician or interested in older guitar amplifiers and electronic, this will be of interest to you ... http://goo.gl/MH3iAR ** Like me at Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/WoodWorkWeb ** Follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/woodworkweb ** Join me on woodworkweb: http://www.woodworkweb.com ** Connect with me on Google+: http://goo.gl/7fotJq
