The biggest psychological experiment ever is being conducted, and we’re all taking part in it: every day, a billion people are tested online. Which ingenious tricks and other digital laws ensure that we fill our online shopping carts to the brim, or stay on websites as long as possible? Or vote for a particular candidate? The bankruptcies of department stores and shoe shops clearly show that our buying behaviour is rapidly shifting to the Internet. An entirely new field has arisen, of ‘user experience’ architects and ‘online persuasion officers’. How do these digital data dealers use, manipulate and abuse our user experience? Not just when it comes to buying things, but also with regards to our free time and political preferences. Aren’t companies, which are running millions of tests at a time, miles ahead of science and government, in this respect? Now the creators of these digital seduction techniques, former Google employees among them, are themselves arguing for the introduction of an ethical code. What does it mean, when the conductors of experiments themselves are asking for their power and possibilities to be restricted? With: Bart Schutz, Natasha Dow Schüll (anthropologist), James Williams (persuasion technology researcher), Pepijn Rijvers (chief marketing officer Booking.com), Timothy Prescott (political data analyst) and Tristan Harris (user experience designer ‘Time Well Spent’ movement) Originally broadcasted by VPRO in 2016. © VPRO Backlight September 2016 On VPRO broadcast you will find nonfiction videos with English subtitles, French subtitles and Spanish subtitles, such as documentaries, short interviews and documentary series. Is the world getting better or worse? A look at the numbers | Steven Pinker

18:33
Was 2017 really the "worst year ever," as some would have us believe? In his analysis of recent data on homicide, war, poverty, pollution and more, psychologist Steven Pinker finds that we're doing better now in every one of them when compared with 30 years ago. But progress isn't inevitable, and it doesn't mean everything gets better for everyone all the time, Pinker says. Instead, progress is problem-solving, and we should look at things like climate change and nuclear war as problems to be solved, not apocalypses in waiting. "We will never have a perfect world, and it would be dangerous to seek one," he says. "But there's no limit to the betterments we can attain if we continue to apply knowledge to enhance human flourishing." Being offline is the new luxury - VPRO documentary

46:39
When have you been offline for the last time? Did you choose yourself to be offline or was internet not working? To be offline seems more and more to become a choice that we see as a luxury. Is being offline the new luxury or is it still a luxury to be online for some people? Digital networks are becoming denser and denser. We are online all the time everywhere and they are fewer places where we really can be alone. Where and when can we still disconnect? To be offline has become a luxury. Will we permanently use data or do we take back control over our connectivity? In this documentary we go on a journey to the edge of internet. To be online all the time and everywhere. It sounds great, but it has its drawbacks. As digital networks are closing in, there are fewer places to be really on your own. Being offline is becoming a luxury. Where can you be offline? We are connected to the internet even in our bedrooms. It’s the ambition of companies like Google and Facebook to connect the entire world, so that we can be online all the time and everywhere. Google has sent balloons up into the skies over Sri Lanka to provide the island state with free Wi-Fi for a month. On the ground, more and more devices communicate through the so-called Internet-of-Things. We are going to be ‘glass citizens’ in a transparent house, connected for life to a wireless intravenous drip and traced anywhere via our smartphones. What does it mean? A small but growing group of people is saying goodbye to lifetime connectability. They are researching ways to keep control. What can we learn from them about life in the digital era? With: Paul Frissen (political scientist), Sherry Turkle (psychologist MIT), Evgeny Morozov (internet critic) and Birgitta Jonsdottir (hacker & founder Pirate Party) Original title: Offline als luxe Originally broadcasted by VPRO in 2016. © VPRO Backlight May 2016 On VPRO broadcast you will find nonfiction videos with English subtitles, French subtitles and Spanish subtitles, such as documentaries, short interviews and documentary series. Social Data Science masterclass - Dr Suzy Moat and Dr Tobias Preis, University of Warwick

02:20:41
Dr Suzy Moat - Bio Suzy Moat is an Associate Professor of Behavioural Science at Warwick Business School, where she co-directs the Data Science Lab. She is also a Faculty Fellow of the Alan Turing Institute. Her research investigates whether data on our usage of the Internet, from sources such as Google, Twitter, Wikipedia and Flickr can help us measure and predict human behaviour in the real world. The results of her work have been featured by television, radio and press worldwide, by outlets such as CNN, BBC, The Guardian, Wall Street Journal, New Scientist and Wired, and published in journals such as Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. She has acted as an advisor to government and public bodies on related topics. Moat studied Computer Science at UCL and Psychology at Edinburgh, during which time she won prizes including the UCL Faculty of Engineering Medal. Research Everyday usage of the Internet leaves huge volumes of text and images in its wake. Suzy’s research draws on these new data sources, and asks: can we use online data to measure human behaviour and experience we couldn’t measure before? Can we generate quicker, cheaper indicators of the wellbeing of society? Can we use these new data sources to predict human behaviour? Her previous work has touched on problems as diverse as linking online behaviour to stock market moves (with Preis, Curme, Stanley, et al.), estimating crowd sizes (with Botta and Preis) and evaluating whether the beauty of the environment we live in might affect our health (with Seresinhe and Preis). She is interested in generating indicators to support decision making in a range of domains, including economics and health. Dr Tobias Preis - Bio Dr. Tobias Preis is an Associate Professor of Behavioural Science and Finance at the University of Warwick and a Faculty Fellow of the Alan Turing Institute, the UK’s national institute for Data Science. Together with his colleague Dr. Suzy Moat, he directs the Data Science Lab at Warwick Business School. His recent research has aimed to analyse and predict real world behaviour with the volumes of data being generated by our interactions with technology, using data from Google, Wikipedia, Twitter, Flickr, Instagram and other sources. He has published over fifty research articles, book and book chapters in this area. Preis’ research is frequently featured in the news, by outlets including the BBC, the New York Times, the Financial Times, Science, Nature, Time Magazine, New Scientist and the Guardian. He has given a range of public talks including presentations at TEDx events in the UK and in Switzerland and he frequently advises governmental and commercial stakeholders around the globe. More details can be found on his website http://www.tobiaspreis.com. Research Mammoth amounts of data are now being generated through society’s extensive interactions with technological systems, automatically documenting collective human behaviour in a previously unimaginable fashion. Preis’ research investigates whether data from sources such as Google, Wikipedia, Twitter, Flickr, Instagram and other sources can be used to: (1) reduce delays in measurement of human behaviour (2) measure behaviour which previously could not be measured (3) improve predictions of future behaviour #datascienceclasses
Has the West Lost It? A Conversation with Kishore Mahbubani

For more on this event, visit: https://bit.ly/2xBv5lk For more on the Georgetown Initiative for U.S.-China Dialogue on Global Issues: https://uschinadialogue.georgetown.edu/ October 1, 2018 | In his new book, Has the West Lost It? A Provocation, renowned scholar Kishore Mahbubani assesses the challenges the West faces in a fast-changing, multipolar world. He argues that while democracy and peace remain critical for global order, the West can no longer presume to impose its ideology on the world. Only by recognizing its changing status, and seeking to influence rather than dominate, can the West continue to play a leading role in global affairs. On October 1, 2018, Professor Mahbubani visited Georgetown for a presentation and discussion of this important book. Dr. Victor Cha, the D.S. Song-KF endowed chair in international affairs, moderated the discussion.

Candle volume charts are among the easiest to use for predicting intraday price fluctuations. These charts use the capability of both the candlestick price chart and the volume chart. You could look at learning some common candlestick patterns if you are into that style of trading. Bollinger bands are another statistical trend tool that chartists use to predict intraday price charts. The candlestick chart shows the day high, the day low, the opening price and the closing price for each of the previous trading days. Volume stats are added to the candlestick chart to tell traders of the pressure behind every price tick. It, too, comes with many electronic trading softwares. Bollinger bands indicate the upper and lower thresholds at which the current price is likely to fluctuate. It uses the price trend from the past 20 days to make that prediction. The upper and lower bands are only estimates, but they are indicative of price points that can infer a bullish or bearish trend if crossed. Never you can’t predict next candlestick why because at least many traders trade in 5 minutes or 15 mnts in intraday buy myself and my student trade in 3 minutes candlestick this 3 minutes is just for entry candlestick pattern doesn’t works in this 3 minutes but comparing with volume, channels and levels you can find a right entry with small stop loss so learn and earn on your own. how to find support and resistance levels how to identify support and resistance levels in forex support and resistance charts free stock support and resistance website support and resistance indicator support and resistance zones bac support and resistance levels support and resistance calculator excel candlestick charting psychology candlestick psychology candle charting psychology candlestick psychology pdf how to read candle wicks candlestick math pdf mastering candlestick math predicting next candlestick candlestick secrets candlestick patterns candlestick patterns explained with examples #how_to_predict_next_candlestick #candlestick_psychology

DEF CON 13 - Broward Horne, Meme Mining for Fun and Profit

52:00
Broward Horne, Meme Mining for Fun and Profit Technology trends are treacherous. Should you learn java or visual basic? Pay for Windows or download Linux? Will that investment in Bluetooth pay off? Or will you get suckered by a faddish book written by a fading technology guru? You can't know the future (yet), but you can make educated guesses and tilt the odds in your favor. Meme Miner is a simple program for trend tracking. Its power lies in the business and social bandwidth concepts behind its creation. Meme Miner shows current technology trends, but also gives an historical perspective of their past. You will NOT get a lesson in HTTP hacking in this session, but you will get practical and valuable business concepts to help survive (and perhaps prosper) in the next technology upheaval. Broward Horne is a software developer with a diverse background, including several years as an electronic technician at Litton and Teradyne and as a sysadmin at a major University. Broward also has a business background, doing contract work for the United States Department of Transportation on experimental pen-based systems, early wireless LANs and two-dimension barcoding. Since 1999, he has been in java software development, mostly for sales and ordering systems in large corporations. Prior to 1991, he hacked internal networks at two major electronics companies out of curiosity, but never intentionally damaged or sabotaged any system or network. For the past thirteen years, Broward has done business intelligence and analysis against various internet data sources, including the usenet newsgroups, Dice.com, Monster.com, Google and other search engines. This analysis kept him gainfully employed throughout the Dotcom Crash. More at http://www.realmeme.com

How can we reverse the negative health trends affecting society? This film introduces 4 new research projects granted by the AXA Research Fund to help find a solution to some of today's biggest areas of health concern. While modern medicine & lifestyle changes have drastically benefited our lives in recent decades, they are also partly responsible for the emergence of new health challenges such as obesity, our resistance to antibiotics & a considerable increase in cancers. At AXA we believe that reversing these negative health trends is a priority. So, how should we address these new challenges? To answer this question the AXA Research Fund has granted 4 new research projects in 2016, with a total commitment of almost €400K, specifically: - Dr Chen's research aims to improve lung cancer treatment using state of the art imaging technology - Dr Coppola's research aims at better ways to cure pancreatic cancer through earlier diagnosis - Dr Petrelli is paving the way for the development of new non-invasive treatments for type 2 diabetes that rely on our immune system - Dr Maculins aims to help fight bacterial infection through better understanding of how bacteria hijack the host's inflammatory response Your well-being and future rely on the power of research. 27c3: Ignorance and Peace Narratives in Cyberspace (en)

Speaker: Angela Crow Cloud Computing, Assessment, and Fools like Me. This paper explores the challenges of being proactive with existing and future data mining possibilities when facing the realities of institutional expectations for assessment and when facing the fact that one's own understanding of cyber capabilities is less than ideal. This paper discusses the current assessment cyber resources, trends, and pressures within USA academic institutions and the challenges of reactive/proactive labor in the midst of multiple levels of technological/informational literacies amongst administrators. Years ago, when young nuns were entering a particular Catholic convent, they were asked to write autobiographical essays which were filed away along with other information about each nun. When they were elderly, these nuns agreed to be a part of a study on Alzheimers, giving permission for scientists to perform autopsies upon their deaths. Susan Kemper, a cognitive psychologist and psycholinguist was able to take the autobiographies from these humanities-based school teachers, and predict the probability of alzheimers from their sentence structures at eighteen. Luckily, replications of this kind of research are difficult. I say luckily because these kinds of findings might have potential hazards for those whose writing at 18 indicates alzheimers: specifically, living in a country in which health care is not a fundamental right, insurance companies might want access to this kind of data. I think of this study each time that I find myself in a meeting as an administrator at a university in the United States, navigating difficult decisions about gathering writing samples from a large group of 18 year old students. While our assessment rhetoric suggests that we "come in peace," I find myself worrying over the potential hazards of employing certain cloud computing resources to facilitate our data collection of student essays. HOW TO ANALYZE PEOPLE ON SIGHT | Audiobook with subtitles | Human Analysis, Psychology

06:50:36
In this popular American book from the 1920s, accomplished public speaker and self-help charlatan Elsie Lincoln Benedict outlines her pseudo-scientific system of "Human Analysis". She proposes that, within the human race, five sub-types have developed through evolutionary processes, each with its own distinct character traits and corresponding outward appearance. She offers to teach the reader how to recognise these five types of people and understand their innate differences. Her ideas have never been taken seriously by the scientific community, but this book is considered a classic within its genre and remains in print today. The Third Industrial Revolution: A Radical New Sharing Economy

01:44:59
The global economy is in crisis. The exponential exhaustion of natural resources, declining productivity, slow growth, rising unemployment, and steep inequality, forces us to rethink our economic models. Where do we go from here? In this feature-length documentary, social and economic theorist Jeremy Rifkin lays out a road map to usher in a new economic system. A Third Industrial Revolution is unfolding with the convergence of three pivotal technologies: an ultra-fast 5G communication internet, a renewable energy internet, and a driverless mobility internet, all connected to the Internet of Things embedded across society and the environment. This 21st century smart digital infrastructure is giving rise to a radical new sharing economy that is transforming the way we manage, power and move economic life. But with climate change now ravaging the planet, it needs to happen fast. Change of this magnitude requires political will and a profound ideological shift. Patrick Ball ─ Digital Echoes: Understanding Patterns of Mass Violence with Data and Statistics

01:42:31
Patrick Ball is the director of research at Human Rights Data Analysis Group. Data about mass violence can seem to offer insights into patterns: is violence getting better, or worse, over time? Is violence directed more against men or women? But in human rights data collection, we (usually) don’t know what we don’t know --- and worse, what we don’t know is likely to be systematically different from what we do know. This talk will explore the assumption that nearly every project using data must make: that the data are representative of reality in the world. We will explore how, contrary to the standard assumption, how statistical patterns in raw data tend to be quite different than patterns in the world. Statistical patterns in data reflect how the data was collected rather than changes in the real-world phenomena data purport to represent. Using analysis of killings in Iraq, homicides committed by police in the US, killings in the conflict in Syria, and homicides in Colombia, we will contrast patterns in raw data with estimates total patterns of violence—where the estimates correct for heterogeneous underreporting. The talk will show how biases in raw data can be addressed through estimation, and explain why it matters.
Big Data Tools and Solutions: The Myths and the Reality

Moderator: Usama Fayyad, Oasis500 Panelists: Richard Rovner, MathWorks, Inc. Ingo Mierswa, Rapid-I GmbH Dan Steinberg, Salford Systems Udo Sglavo, SAS Institute Inc. Abstract: The panel is intended to address a fundamental issue - What roles are the commercial data mining tools having in enabling Data Science? In a world, where most new Data Science is utilizing open source R as the primary tools library, and where in large enterprises analysis efforts are heavily reliant on established classical tools like SAS and MathWorks/MatLab, a question poses itself: Have there been recent changes or successes enabled by new tools? Are tools essential? Do we have the right tools for the modern #BigData world? More on http://www.kdd.org/kdd2016/ KDD2016 Conference is published on http://videolectures.net/

1.3.4 Lauren Solberg - Regulating Human Subjects.mov

10:29
This video series is made available from the Northern Kentucky University Law Review Symposium in conjunction with the NKU Chase Law + Informatics Institute. This collection of materials from the March1-2, 2012 provides a permanent collection of the exceptional presentations provided by the participants. This video features Lauren Solberg on the topic of Regulating Human Subjects. From the program abstract: "Regulating Human Subjects Research in the Information Age: Data Mining on Social Networking Sites " Presented by Lauren Solberg In the 1970s, the Department of Health, Education & Welfare promulgated the first regulations governing research with human subjects. Currently, the Department of Health and Human Services regulates both biomedical and behavioral research with human subjects through 45 C.F.R. § 46, but these regulations have not been revised to address the advances in technology that have changed the ways in which human subjects research is conducted in the 21st century. One of these advances includes researchers' use of the Internet for various research purposes, including recruiting subjects for their studies, as well as mining data on social networking sites. The issue of data mining on social networking sites for research purposes is becoming more important as researchers in a number of academic fields are collecting research data in this manner. The question of whether such research involves "human subjects" as the term is defined in 45 C.F.R. § 46 is important because the answer dictates whether or not such research is subject to federal regulation and oversight. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP) has previously acknowledged an increased use of the Internet for research purposes, but it has not published any guidance about how the Office understands the issue (nor have any applicable specific regulations been promulgated). Such guidance, and particularly guidance that addresses the use of social networking sites for research purposes, is becoming increasingly more important as researchers are expanding beyond just Facebook and MySpace to recruit research participants and collect data. Furthermore, new social networking sites such as PatientsLikeMe.com are changing the ways in which both behavioral and biomedical researchers recruit and interact with study participants. This presentation identifies three key research activities that any new guidance that the OHRP publishes about Internet research should address: (1) the use of the Internet (including social networking sites) to recruit subjects; (2) the use of the Internet to collect personal information via direct interaction with site users; and (3) the collection of personal information from the Internet for research purposes without direct interaction with the owner of the information, i.e. data mining. It further explores recent case law that says that there is no reasonable expectation of privacy with respect to information posted on social networking sites, and discusses the history of privacy in the federal regulations governing research with human subjects. This Article concludes that in light of the changes in online social networking, as well as the consideration that the Department of Health and Human Services is giving to revising 45 C.F.R. §46, guidance -- or even new regulations -- should be drafted that address these key research activities. It furthermore suggests language that would inform researchers and research institutions whether each of these key research activities are subject to the regulations governing research with human subjects. About the NKU Chase law + Informatics Institute: The NKU Chase Law + Informatics Institute provides critical interdisciplinary research regarding law, regulation, and industry practice as it is applied across complex information systems, emerging technology, and all areas of law. While not limited to any particular legal field, the Institute emphasizes intellectual property law, privacy, business and securities law, international law, and evidentiary rules because the creation, acquisition, aggregation, security, manipulation, and exploitation of data have extensive legal and societal consequences in these fields.

Poor people are booming business - VPRO documentary - 2007

48:27
Original title: The Last market. Most of the world’s companies market their goods and services to the richest part of the world’s population. But an increasing number of these companies are realizing that they have neglected more than five billion consumers at the bottom of the income pyramid. Almost all of the world’s companies aim for the richest part of the world’s population. This situation changed when in 2002 business guru C.K. Prahalad and Stuart Hart (Professor of Management at Cornell University) published a groundbreaking article called “The Bottom of the Pyramid.” The poor can be the source of innovation and the engine behind global trade and wealth. Don’t consider the poor as victims or as a burden, but as flexible and creative entrepreneurs and consumers.
