Occurrence Gold is mainly found in the native state either mixed with quartz in ancient rocks (vein gold) or scattered in sand and gravel (placer gold) or in the alluvial sand (alluvial gold). Ores The important ore of gold is Alluvial sand or gravel Nearly half of the total world production of gold comes from the mines in South Africa. India occupies 8th position among the gold producing countries of the world and account for about 2% of the total world production. The Kolar mines in Karnataka produce about 99.97% of our gold output. Extraction from Gold Ores - Mac Arthur Forrest Cyanide Process. The extraction of gold from the sulphide or telluride ore involves the following steps : i) Crushing, grinding and concentration The gold ore is crushed and powdered, and then concentrated by frothfloatation process. ii) Roasting The concentrated ore is roasted in excess of air or oxygen when impurities of sulphur, arsenic and tellurium are oxidised and escape as their volatile oxides. iii) Treatment with KCN The finely powdered roasted ore is taken in large vats made up of cement or iron and having false wooden bottoms with holes. It is then treated with a dilute (0.5%) solution of KCN in presence of excess of air for 24 hours. As a result, gold dissolves in KCN to form a soluble complex called potassium aurocyanide. Gold plus potassium cyanide plus water plus oxygen gives Potassium aurocyanide plus potassium hydroxide. iv) Precipitation of gold The above solution containing potassium aurocyanide is filtered to remove insoluble impurities and then treated with zinc dust. Gold being less electropositive than zinc, it gets precipitated. Potassium aurocynade plus zinc gives potassium tetracyano zincate plus gold. The precipitated gold is recovered by filtration .It is further purified by electrorefining. iv) Electrolytic refining This method is used when very pure gold is required. The impure gold is made the anode while a thin sheet of pure gold acts as the cathode. The electrolyte consists of a solution of auric chloride (AuCl3) acidified with 10-12% HCl. On passing current pure gold gets deposited on the cathode. Physical properties of gold i) Gold is a lustrous yellow metal which melts at 1063°Celcious to a green liquid and boils at 2610°Celcious. ii) It is the most malleable and ductile of all metals. iii) It is a good conductor of heat and electricity. Chemical properties of gold i) Gold is unaffected by dry or moist air or oxygen. ii) Alkalies have no action on gold. iii) With Aquaregia Gold dissolves in aquaregia (3 parts of concentrates Hydrochloric acid plus one part of concentrated nitric acid to form auric chloride. Gold plus hydrochloric acid plus nitric acid gives auric chloride plus nitrosyl chloride. iv) With chlorine At 200°Celcious, gold is readily attacked by chlorine forming auric chloride. HEAP LEACHING OF GOLD & SILVER ORES Heap leaching is the process to extract precious metals like gold, silver, copper etc, from their ore by placing them on a pad (a base) in a heap and sprinkling a leaching solvent, such as cyanide or acids, over the heap.. This process dissolves the metals and they collect at the bottom of the pad. The metal is then further processed. This methodology is mostly used for low-grade ores, and the basic processing steps involve crushing and sometime grinding.. The stages for heap leaching can be described as: 1. Ground Preparation and pad construction: Here the soil on a slightly sloping ground is compacted and covered by an impermeable pad (can be made of plastic). 2. Ore stacking: Then the crushed ore is stacked in the form of big heaps. Amount of fines is decreases as low as possible to improve permeability. 3. Then the leaching agent such as cyanide or acid is sprayed over the heap. 4. As, the reagent passes through the heap; the valuable metals get dissolved in it. 5. There are several techniques and processes by which gold may be extracted from the earth. Placer mining Panning Gold panning is mostly a manual technique of separating gold from other materials. As gold is much denser than rock, it quickly settles to the bottom of the pan. The panning material is usually removed from stream beds, often at the inside turn in the stream, or from the bedrock shelf of the stream, where the density of gold allows it to concentrate, a type called placer deposits. Gold panning is the easiest technique for searching for gold, but is not commercially viable for extracting gold from large deposits, except where labor costs are very low or gold traces are substantial. Panning is often marketed as a tourist attraction on former gold fields. Before large production methods are used, a new source must be identified and panning is useful to identify placer gold deposits to be evaluated for commercial viability. Sluicing Using a sluice box to extract gold from placer deposits has long been a common practice in prospecting and small scale mining. A sluice box is essentially a man made channel with riffles set in the bottom. The riffles are designed to create dead zones in the current to allow gold to drop out of suspension. The box is placed in the stream to channel water flow. Gold bearing material is placed at the top of the box. The material is carried by the current through the box where gold and other dense material settles out behind the riffles. Less dense material flows out of the box as tailings. Larger commercial placer mining operations employ screening plants, or trommels, to remove the larger alluvial materials such as boulders and gravel, before concentrating the remainder in a sluice box or jig plant. These operations typically include diesel powered, earth moving equipment, including excavators, bulldozers, wheel loaders, and rock trucks. Dredging Although this method has largely been replaced by modern methods, some dredging is done by small scale miners using suction dredges... Gold ore processing In placer mines, the gold is recovered by gravity separation. For hard rock mining, other methods are usually used. Cyanide process Cyanide extraction of gold may be used in areas where fine gold bearing rocks are found. Sodium cyanide solution is mixed with finely ground rock that is proven to contain gold or silver, and is then separated from the ground rock as gold cyanide or silver cyanide solution. Zinc is to precipitate out residual zinc as well as the silver and gold metals. The zinc is removed with sulfuric acid, leaving a silver or gold sludge that is generally smelted into an ingot then shipped to a metals refinery for final processing into 99.9999% pure metals. Advancements in the 1970s have seen activated carbon used in extracting gold from the leach solution. The gold is absorbed into the porous matrix of the carbon. Activated carbon has so much internal surface area,[5] that fifteen grams (half an ounce) has the equivalent surface area of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (18,100 square metres (195,000 sq ft)). The gold can be removed from the carbon by using a strong solution of caustic soda and cyanide, a process known as elution. Gold is then plated out onto steel wool through electrowinning... The cyanide technique is crude and is commonly used in low grade gold and silver ore processing. There are many environmental hazards associated with this extraction method in addition to the high toxicity of the cyanide itself. Carbon in Pulp (CIP) is an extraction technique for recovery of gold which has been liberated into a cyanide solution as part of the gold cyanidation process. Introduced in the early 1980s, Carbon in Pulp is regarded as a simple and cheap process. As such it is used in most industrial applications where the presence of competing silver or copper does not prohibit its use. Activated carbon acts like a sponge to aurocyanide and other complex ions in solution. Hard carbon particles (much larger than the ore particle sizes) can be mixed with the ore and cyanide solution mixture. The gold cyanide complex is adsorbed onto the carbon until it comes to an equilibrium with the gold in solution. Because the carbon particles are much larger than the ore particles, the coarse carbon can then be separated from the slurry by screening using a wire mesh. Leached pulp and carbon are transferred in a counter current flow arrangement between a series of tanks, usually numbering 4 to 6. In the final tank, fresh or barren carbon is put in contact with low grade or tailings solution. At this tank the fresh carbon has a high activity and can remove trace amounts of gold (to levels below 0.01 mg/L Au in solution). As it moves up the train, the carbon loads to higher and higher concentrations of gold, as it comes in contact with higher grade solutions. Typically concentrations as high as 4000 to 8000 grams of gold per tonne of carbon (g/t Au) can be achieved on the final loaded carbon, as it comes in contact with freshly leached ore and pregnant leach solution (PLS). This can be measured by comparing the amount of gold extracted from the carbon to the amount of carbon used. The final loaded carbon then is removed and washed before undergoing "elution" or desorption of gold cyanide at high temperature and pH. Ethanol can also be used to desorb gold from activated carbon, but safety concerns have slowed its acceptance in the gold extraction industry. The elute solution, normally consisting of caustic soda (the electrolyte), cyanide and water circulates through the loaded carbon extracting gold and other metals. The loaded solution passes through an electro winning cell where the gold and other metals are attached to cathodes, made up of wire wool, by electrolysis. The solution then passes back through the loaded carbon extracting more gold and other metals. This process continues until the carbon has been stripped. The cathodes (wire wool now plated with gold and other metals) are removed and placed in acid. The acid burns off the wire wool and other metals such as copper and leaves a sediment of gold and solution of acid and dissolved silver. The acid and silver are drained off after which the gold sediment is numerously washed with water. After the water washes are complete the gold is dried mixed with borax and smelted.
