Systematic Classification of Life - ep7, Chordata

This is part of a series of video guides through the evolutionary tree of life, meant to be associated with the Phylogeny Explorer Project. Here is a link to the entire series playlist. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXJ4dsU0oGMLnubJLPuw0dzD0AvAHAotW The Systematic Classification of Life started as a discussion with creationists on Christian Forums. The discussion convinced one of them of the reality of evolution. She eventually became my wife. Lilandra proposed a video series on that discussion to help people appreciate the beauty and scientific power of cladistics or common ancestry. Our original discussion is the template that is being expanded on with my wife's help. If you like what I do, please consider becoming a patron. https://www.patreon.com/aronra

Chordata Phylum Class Cyclostomata | Animal Kingdom | NEET Bio | Part 16

15:30
The phylum Chordata contains all animals that possess, at some point during their lives, a hollow nerve cord and a notochord, a flexible rod between the nerve cord and the digestive track. The phylum Chordata is an extremely diverse phylum, and the one most recognizable to us. The phylum contains about 43,700 species, most of them concentrated in the subphylum Vertebrata, making it the third-largest phylum in the animal kingdom. The phylum Chordata is divided into three subphylums: Urochordata (tunicates), Cephalachordata (lancelets), and Vertebrata (vertebrates). The first two phyla are very small containing only about 2,000 species total. Tunicates are marine animals that only show the attributes of the chordata phylum in the larva stage, and when they turn into adults lose the notochord and nerve cord. Adult tunicates look like small sacs around 3 cm tall attached to the ocean floor. Lancelets, which are similar in appearance to small fish, keep the nerve chord and notochord into maturity but are extremely simple in structure and lack a backbone. The third phylum, vertebrata, is the most important, and is distinguished by a backbone (made either of bone or cartilage) containing interlocking vertebrae and a skull enclosing a brain. These two features serve to protect the entire central nervous system, and in addition give support and structure to the body; these bones also form part of a larger system of bones, the endoskeletal system. Unlike the exoskeleton of other phylums such as the arthropods, which must be shed periodically, this endoskeleton is permanent and can grow with the organism. The subphylum vertebrata is divided into seven classes: jawless fish, cartilaginous fish, bony fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Class Cyclostomata: Cyclostomata is a group of agnathans that comprises the living jawless fishes: the lampreys and hagfishes. Both groups have round mouths that lack jaws but have retractable horny teeth. The name Cyclostomata means "round mouths". ................................................................................. Characteristics Of Animal Under Protochordata

06:23
Characteristics Of Animal Under Protochordata- rotochordata is also a crucial topic under animal classification. Iftekhar Khan tells you about the 4 subphylums of chordates that are Hemichordata, Cephalochordata, Urochordata, and vertebrata. He instigates it by explaining about hemichordate, cephalochordate and urochordata one by one, provides the information about its habitat, body form, distinguished divisions of the body wall and other elements which are considered to be the most important in this subject. Animals are classified in a variety of ways. This helps scientists to study the relationships in animal groups and to see the whole animal family tree as it has developed through time. The study of animal classification is called taxonomy. The basic unit of an animal is the cell. Chordates are animals possessing a notochord, a hollow dorsal nerve cord, pharyngeal slits, an endostyle, and a post-anal tail for at least some period of their life cycles. Taxonomically, the phylum includes the subphyla Vertebrata, including mammals, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds; Tunicata, including salps and sea squirts; and Cephalochordata, comprising the lancelets. Members of the phylum Chordata are bilaterally symmetric, deuterostome coelomates, and the vertebrate chordates display segmentation. The phylum Hemichordata including the acorn worms has been presented as a fourth chordate subphylum, but it now is usually treated as a separate phylum. It, along with the phylum Echinodermata, including starfish, sea urchins, and sea cucumbers and their kin, are the chordates' closest relatives. Primitive chordates are known from at least as early as the Cambrian explosion.

Phylum Mollusca Characteristics | Animal Kingdom | NEET Bio | Part 13

16:14
Phylum Mollusca: Study of Mollusca is called Malacology. The term Mollusca was first applied by Aristotle to cuttle fish. Lamarck coined the term Molluscus. Study of molluscan shell is called conchology. The animals of this phylum are soft-bodied, non-metameric, triploblastic coelomates and fundamentally bilaterally symmetrical invertebrates with a thin fleshy envelope the mantle, around the visceral (internal organs of the body) which may secrete calcareous shell. General characters: Widely distributed over the world. Mostly aquatic (marine and few are fresh-water) and some are terrestrial living in damp soil. Body is soft and unsegmented (except Neopilina). Bilaterally symmetrical except gastropodas (asymmetrical) because the shell is coiled. Schizocoel or Haemocoel cavity found as coelom. Triploblastic Organ system level of body organization. Body is divisible into head (absence in pelecypoda and scaphopoda), dorsal visceral mass, ventral muscular foot and mantle. Mantle- is a dorsal glandular fold of the body wall. It is thick and muscular and encloses a mantle cavity. Head- anterior part of the body, which contains mouth, eyes and tentacles and other sense organs. Foot-is ventral in position usually thick and muscular and generally forms the main locomotory organs. Visceral mass- on dorsal side contains digestive, circulatory and reproductive organ of the body and it forms a hump or dome. Body is covered by a hard calcareous structure, made up of calcium carbonate, called shell. In some molluscus, it is internal or reduced or even absent (oplacophora). Locomotion takes place by ventral muscular foot. Digestive system is well developed with a hard chitinous structure, called radula. Respiration takes place through one or more gills or ctenidia, lungs (pulmonary sac) or general body surface in the terrestrial forms. Circulatory system is closed or open type. Head consists tentacles and compound eyes. Presence of one pair tentacles except octopus where tentacles are modified into arm. Excretion takes place by paired metanephridia (kidney). Nervous system consists of many paired ganglia, connectives and nerves. Sense organs are eyes, tentacles, osphradium and statocyst. Sexes are usually separate but some are monoecious. Pila- sexual dimorphism. Limax- hermaphrodite Helix- hermaphrodite Fertilization is external (in sessile group such as in oyster) or internal. Development may be direct or indirect. Larva is trochopore or veliger or parasitic stage called glochidium larva. ................................................................................. Chordate salient features, BSc, MSc Lecture by Ms. Priyanka khan.

05:15
This video is about the salient features of chordata. Presence of notochord, Dorsal tubular nerve cord and pharyngeal gill slits, post anal tail are the basic features of chordate, which should be present in any of the stages of life or throughout the lifetime. Ascidiaceae possess these characters in larval stage, branchiostoma throughout life time, and in higher chordates notochord is replaced with vertebral column, pharyngeal gill slits modified for aerial respiration and the nerve cord is modified into Central Nervous System.

Phylum Platyhelminthes and Aschelminthes | Animal Kingdom | NEET Bio | Part 10

15:24
Platyhelminthes: The simplest animals that are bilaterally symmetrical and triploblastic. They are also called flatworms. Flatworms have no body cavity other than the gut and lack an anus; the same pharyngeal opening both takes in food and expels waste. Because of the lack of any other body cavity, in larger flatworms the gut is often very highly branched in order to transport food to all parts of the body. The lack of a cavity also constrains flatworms to be flat; they must respire by diffusion, and no cell can be too far from the outside, making a flattened shape necessary. Monaceous and fertilization internal, self or cross. Aschelminthes: Mostly aquatic, free-living or parasitic. Usually small, even microscopic, Some are a meter or more in length. Body cylinder, vermiform, unsegmented, and triploblastic. Organ system grade of body organization. Head not distinctly formed with well-defined sense organ. Body wall with a syncytial or cellular epidermis externally covered with thick cuticle of scleroprotein. Cilia absent except anterior cilia of rotifers. Musculature includes mostly longitudinal fibers, Body cavity a pseudocoel not lined by mesoderm. Digestive system complete with mouth, specialized pharynx, non-muscular intestine, and posterior anus No circulatory and respiratory systems. Excretory system of protonephridia (in some) and canals. Cloaca present in some. The nervous system of cerebral , ganglia or of circumcenter nerve ring with the anterior and posterior end. Mostly dioecious, Male usually smaller than female, Gonads, and ducts single or double.Eggs with the chitinous shell .Cleavage determinate and spiral. Development usually direct with no larval stages, or indirect with a complicated life history. ................................................................................. Characteristics Of Vertebrata

05:15
Characteristics Of Vertebrata- In this lesson, Iftekhar Khan explains about the complete characteristics of vertebrates. The functional units of vertebrates have been discussed entirely in this unit. Also, know about two super classes of vertebrates which are Agnatha and Gnathostomata, their key points and characteristics are illustrated with examples. Animals are classified in a variety of ways. This helps scientists to study the relationships in animal groups and to see the whole animal family tree as it has developed through time. The study of animal classification is called taxonomy. The basic unit of an animal is the cell.
