What is Arbitrage?

04:16
What is an Arbitrage? Arbitrage is the process of simultaneously buying and selling an asset to profit from the differences in the price of the asset. Let’s take a look at how arbitrage works in a simplified example: Imagine we are living in City A. City A has two markets – market A and B. In market A, the shops are selling berries at $30 per kilogram. And just down the street in Market B, the shops are selling berries at $40 per kilogram. However, most people buying berries in market B don’t know that they could buy berries at a much cheaper price at market A. And if they knew, they will probably walk to market A to buy the cheaper berries. The difference in prices is because of imperfect information. As a smart businessman, you decide to take advantage of this. So, every morning, you go to market A to buy the berries at a cheaper price and go to market B to sell the berries at a higher price. For every kilogram of berries you sell, you earn a risk-free profit of $10 from the price difference in the markets. In fact, in the next few months, you became so successful that you start buying large quantities of berries in market A and selling them in market B. This affects the demand and supply of berries in market A and B respectively. The demand of berries in market A increases so their price increases in Market A and the supply of berries in market B increase so their price decreases in market B. Eventually, the prices of the berries in the two markets will become so close together that you can’t make a profit from their price differences. Something similar happens in the financial marketplace as well. A company stock could be trading on the New York Stock Exchange for $1.00 per share and trading on the London Stock Exchange for $1.05 per share. An arbitrageur could pocket the difference of $0.05 per share by buying the stock for $1.00 on the New York Stock Exchange and selling it on the London Stock exchange. Such arbitrage opportunities arise usually because of imperfect information. Arbitrage is often called “riskless profit” because it’s theoretically a riskless activity - traders are buying and selling the same asset simultaneously and pocketing the price difference as profit. However, the modern technology has significantly reduced arbitrage opportunities. The advancement of technology has led to the advent of automated trading systems programmed to monitor fluctuations or price differences in similar financial instruments. These systems are able to detect and act on the inefficient pricing setups so rapidly that the price difference of similar financial instruments, and arbitrage opportunity, is quickly eliminated. There is also another type of arbitrage: risk arbitrage. Risk arbitrages aren’t arbitrage in the truest sense because it’s not risk-free and speculative in nature. A risk arbitrage is usually created by speculation of merger and acquisition. Here’s how it may work: Tom hears news that company X may be acquired by a company Y. Tom thinks that the trading price of company X will increase after the acquisition, so he purchases the shares of company X in the hope that he can generate a profit from the price difference between the current trading price and the trading price of company X after the takeover deal. However, such a strategy is not risk-free because the takeover deal could always break. If this was the case, Tom might make a loss as the trading price of company X will likely fall after the bad news.

What is STATISTICAL ARBITRAGE? What does STATISTICAL ARBITRAGE mean? STATISTICAL ARBITRAGE meaning

09:00
What is STATISTICAL ARBITRAGE? What does STATISTICAL ARBITRAGE mean? STATISTICAL ARBITRAGE meaning - STATISTICAL ARBITRAGE definition - STATISTICAL ARBITRAGE explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ In the world of finance and investments, statistical arbitrage is used in two related but distinct ways: In academic literature, "statistical arbitrage" is opposed to (deterministic) arbitrage. In deterministic arbitrage, a sure profit can be obtained from being long some securities and short others. In statistical arbitrage, there is a statistical mispricing of one or more assets based on the expected value of these assets. In other words, statistical arbitrage conjectures statistical mispricings of price relationships that are true in expectation, in the long run when repeating a trading strategy. Among those who follow the hedge fund industry, "statistical arbitrage" refers to a particular category of hedge funds (other categories include global macro, convertible arbitrage, and so on). In this narrower sense, statistical arbitrage is often abbreviated as Stat Arb or StatArb. According to Andrew Lo, StatArb "refers to highly technical short-term mean reversion strategies involving large numbers of securities (hundreds to thousands, depending on the amount of risk capital), very short holding periods (measured in days to seconds), and substantial computational, trading, and information technology (IT) infrastructure". As a trading strategy, statistical arbitrage is a heavily quantitative and computational approach to equity trading. It involves data mining and statistical methods, as well as automated trading systems. Historically, StatArb evolved out of the simpler pairs trade strategy, in which stocks are put into pairs by fundamental or market-based similarities. When one stock in a pair outperforms the other, the poorer performing stock is bought long with the expectation that it will climb towards its outperforming partner, the other is sold short. Mathematically speaking, the strategy is to find a pair of stocks with high cointegration (only high correlation is not enough). The time series of the two stocks must be non-stationary (Kalman filter can be used as for the test). This hedges risk from whole-market movements. Various statistical tools have been used in the context of pairs trading ranging from simple distance-based approaches to more complex tools such as cointegration and copula concepts. StatArb considers not pairs of stocks but a portfolio of a hundred or more stocks—some long, some short—that are carefully matched by sector and region to eliminate exposure to beta and other risk factors. Portfolio construction is automated and consists of two phases. In the first or "scoring" phase, each stock in the market is assigned a numeric score or rank that reflects its desirability; high scores indicate stocks that should be held long and low scores indicate stocks that are candidates for shorting. The details of the scoring formula vary and are highly proprietary, but, generally (as in pairs trading), they involve a short term mean reversion principle so that, e.g., stocks that have done unusually well in the past week receive low scores and stocks that have underperformed receive high scores. In the second or "risk reduction" phase, the stocks are combined into a portfolio in carefully matched proportions so as to eliminate, or at least greatly reduce, market and factor risk. This phase often uses commercially available risk models like MSCI/Barra/APT/Northfield/Risk Infotech/Axioma to constrain or eliminate various risk factors. Broadly speaking, StatArb is actually any strategy that is bottom-up, beta-neutral in approach and uses statistical/econometric techniques in order to provide signals for execution. Signals are often generated through a contrarian mean reversion principle but can also be designed using such factors as lead/lag effects, corporate activity, short-term momentum, etc. This is usually referred to as a multi-factor approach to StatArb. Because of the large number of stocks involved, the high portfolio turnover and the fairly small size of the effects one is trying to capture, the strategy is often implemented in an automated fashion and great attention is placed on reducing trading costs. Statistical arbitrage has become a major force at both hedge funds and investment banks. Many bank proprietary operations now center to varying degrees around statistical arbitrage trading. ....

ARBITRAGING - I AM IN

08:51
DISCUSSION: My quiet entry into arbitraging. WHAT IS ARBITRAGING? The philosophy behind the Arbitrage software is to automatically profit from temporary price differences between exchanges while being market-neutral. Unlike other legacy systems, Arbitrage’s aBot doesn't sell but actually short sells designated cryptocurrencies on the short exchange, this feature offers two important advantages. First, the strategy is always market-neutral, meaning as the cryptocurrency market's moves (up or down) it doesn't impact the strategy of returns. In simple terms, this removes a huge amount of risk from the platform’s overall return strategy as the market could suddenly lose half its value and this won't make any difference in the strategy returns. Second, the aBOT's strategy doesn't need to transfer crypto-funds (e.g. BTC, LTC or Fiat) between cryptocurrency exchanges. The buy/sell and sell/buy opposing trade activities are done in parallel on two different exchanges, independently. NOTE: INVESTING IN THE CRYPTOCURRENCY SPACE IS RISKY. INVEST ONLY WHAT YOU CAN AFFORD TO LOSE. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY INVESTMENT DECISION YOU MAKE. **DISCLAIMER**: I am not a financial advisor nor am I giving financial advice. I am sharing my biased opinion based on speculation. You should not take my opinion as financial advice. You should always do your research before making any investment. You should also understand the risks of investing. This is all speculative based investing.

Trades "faciles" : Arbitrage et News Trading

29:59

Find and Exploit the Arbitrage in Your Industry

07:43
Are the businesses in your industry using all marketing options available to them to their full potential? The answer is no.  And in many industries, the answer is, "not even close". If you take the time to study your industry and your competitors, you will find that there are numerous examples of marketing arbitrage ready for you to exploit. What is Arbitrage? Arbitrage is a term traditionally used with financial instruments like commodities and stocks.  There are sometimes differences in the price someone is willing to pay for a financial instrument and what people are selling them for. Arbitrage is the exploiting of this middle price area where you simultaneously buy and sell that financial instrument and make a profit off of the price difference between the two. You use arbitrage all the time.  A simple example is going to a garage sale where you see an antique table selling for $10.  You know it is worth more, so you buy it and then resell that table on Ebay for $50.  You took advantage of the arbitrage in what the table was selling for and what it was actually worth.  In this case you made a cool $40 because you were able to spot the arbitrage where no one else was. If you are in a service industry like mortgage brokers, real estate agents, cleaning companies, you probably know of several companies offering to sell leads to you for a price.  These companies are already taking advantage of the marketing arbitrage in your industry.  In this case, they know they can get a lead at a certian price and then sell it to you for a much higher price. So now that you understand what arbitrage is, do you see how this can be applied to marketing? Marketing Arbitrage Marketing legend, Jay Abraham, was the one who introduced me to the concept of looking for marketing arbitrage opportunities. I'm primarily an internet marketer, that is what I sell and where I spend most of my time.  But I also own another business where we spend plenty of time and money on traditional marketing so finding marketing arbitrage opportunities is not just for online marketing. You can find marketing arbitrage opportunities in many areas, like where businesses are marketing, how they package/position their product or bringing ideas from another industry into yours. Some statistical arbitrage models

15:02
Statistical arbitrage is the mispricing of any given security according to their expected value, base on the mathematical analysis of its historic valuations. Statistical arbitrage is often involved with pairs trading. A statistical arbitrage pairs trading position consists in a long position on one security and a short position on another security. In order to calculate the arbitrage opportunities, a formula have to be better than a simple correlation. Cointegration is this type of mathematical formula we want. http://gamblingandinvesting.com/statistical-arbitrage/
