Hemianthus callitrichoides is one of the smallest aquarium plants in the world, and creeps over the bottom with millimetre-sized round leaves. If planted in small clumps a few centimetres apart, it will spread rapidly and cover the bottom like a carpet. Hemianthus callitrichoides is an attractive foreground plant for small aquariums. Found on Cuba west of Havana. See more at tropica.com

The Latin name means "the plant with the round leaves''. But this only applies to the marsh variety, which has circular leaves. Rotala rotundifolia from South-East Asia has long, thin leaves (2-3 cm wide) and 15-30 long stems. Unlike other Rotala species it is relatively undemanding, although it needs good light to produce red leaves. It forms side shoots willingly, becoming compact and bushy. This also means that it is hard for light to reach the lower leaves, so the plant should be pruned frequently. Also known as Rotala indica. Hey YouTubers! In my previous video, I explained that I've got an itch to continue to learn how to better aquascape. I plan on breaking down my tank this summer but in the meantime, I want to continue to learn how to better grow plants and cultivate them. In this video I'm sharing some tips and tricks on some basic plantings. In Part 1, I'm sharing the prep work for planting Rotala, Cryptocoryne (Parva I believe) and Wysteria. All three came from the LFS in different packaging so I'm showing how to remove the packaging and preparing the plants. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask...but better yet, if you have tips of your own, I'd love to hear so I can do better next time!

How to start your seeds. 1. Fill a glass with clean dechlorinated water. You can use aquarium dechlorinater or sit your water out for 24 hours to let the chlorine offgas if you have no dechlorinated water available. 2. Soak your seeds for 24 to 48 hours until the seed swells and the root emerges from the seed. 3. Transplant to either your starter plug, soil, or a wet paper towel depending on your personal preference. It is best to put them in a starter plug or small pot in a seed tray or other enclosed high humidity enclosures.

This is an in depth look at my dirted planted aquarium set up! This is a great budget aquarium that uses super cheap lighting that can be found at any hardware store and cheap soil to grow my plants. This aquarium is injected with pressurized CO2 which has my plants growing like crazy! This shows it doesn't always take a lot of money to have a beautiful aquarium with amazing plant growth. Dirted tanks are great if you want a cheap aquascape. There is some controversy on whether dirted aquariums are worth it as some people experience issues down the line. My main tip if you choose to go with a dirted tank setup is that less is more when it comes to laying down the dirt layer in the aquarium. In my experience, all planted aquariums I have had in the past were dirted tanks and it is my favorite way to grow plants. In this aquarium I have many nano fish such as long fin white cloud mountain minnows, celestial pearl danios, blue axelrodi rasboras, amano shrimp and skunk corydoras. The plants include anubias nana, anubias nana petite, cryptocoryne petchii, cryptocoryne wendtii, madagascar lace plant (Aponogeton madagascariensis), dwarf baby tears (Hemianthus callitrichoides), Micranthemum 'Monte Carlo', java fern, and Christmas moss. Staurogyne repens is a fresh green, compact and hardy plant for the foreground of the aquarium and it was found in River Rio Cristalino in the southern Amazonas. Its nearest relative in the aquaristic is Hygrophila but Staurogyne is different with its marked compact, low and bushy stature (5-10 cm) and small green leaves (each stem is 3.4 cm wide). During planting in the aquarium, the longest upright shoots should be cut off and new horizontally creeping shoots will soon form from the plant basis and gradually colonize the gravel. We never did this before, but we actually built a 40-liter small planted tank on a relatively low limited budget here at Green Aqua. We used an affordable light and a filter and matched with some other ingredients. But then something happened overnight.... and Balázs made a serious twist at the end. This low tech aquarium has already been taken home by a Green Aqua Customer - the next day after setup. So no updates will be available on it in the future. Sorry about that. But hey, we will do other guide videos so no worry. We've picked all the products from shelf to show you a cheaper alternative and we know you still can do it even cheaper in some parts of the World, but let's just keep the discussion to aquariums and less on budget and numbers. You always can save on costs in many ways. Skip to 10 minutes to cut the waffle. :D Seriously, don't skip, if you're a beginner. ;) Oh, and Happy Valentine's Day! An aquarium maintenance video? I've been getting requests for those from time to time and this sort of fulfills that request. This type of maintenance does not constitute what I do from week to week, as I pretty much just change water, occasionally trim plants and dose liquid ferts. Perhaps it gives some perspective on how I keep these looking crispy. In case you're wondering, all of these tanks are low-tech. As such I'm not needing to trim them every other day, but the plants are not as lush as they could be if I were to go hi-tech (inject CO2). That said, I'm perfectly fine taking my time with these and caring for them in a low-tech manner. Additionally all of these scapes were pretty cheap to setup. I'm not using top of the line gear here and I'd say most of the money goes toward hardscape, substrate and filtration. I'd estimate that each of these cost anywhere from $50-$100 to setup, but most likely in the $75 range. The only reason that I mention that, is you don't need a ton of money to create stuff like this. 90% of what you see on my channel is made from repurposed items or things that I bargained for. Be creative and you can make beautiful art on a budget. Lobelia cardinalis, sometimes known as 'Cardinal Flower', is a native of the eastern and central United States where it can be found growing in moist soils along streams, ponds, and ditches. In its emersed state, it produces green leaves with purplish undersides and bears attractive scarlet, bell-shaped flowers which make it highly popular among terrestrial gardeners. Submersed growth, in contrast, is bright green. Long popularized by the Dutch, L. cardinalis is a fairly common plant in the trade. It can survive in low light/highlight, co2/without co2 and fertilizer or non fertilizer. you will be able to replant them very easily. Rotala Indica, Pearl weed, Dwarf Baby Tears, Jungle val, Hornwort, Christmas Moss, Flame moss, Amazon Sword, Crypt wendtii, Anubias. It can be planted on the aquarium without Co2. Live aquarium plants will help to reduce ammonia and nitrates. You can add aquarium plants light for the better growth of the plant in the aquarium. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Planted Aquarium Substrate DIY Make your own Aquarium Soil" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmn_mXZsy4c -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

This culture form of the stalk plant Bacopa Monnieri is more compact and, under good light conditions, almost a creeping plant. By pinching off all vertical growing shoots, the plant can maintain a low and close growth, since it willingly creates a large number of side shoots. Further, the plant grows well in the shadow of other plants. Very suitable as a bit higher carpet -- or bushy plant in the middle or front of the aquarium. The plant becomes more vertical growing and less compact without CO2 additive and decreased light conditions. See more at tropica.com

Unlike other Hydrocotyle species, this plant retains its trailing growth form. Verticillata originates from America and becomes 3-7 cm tall. Optimum growth is only achieved in strong light and soft, slightly acidic water. It does not need to be rooted, but can be used as a floating plant. Hydrocotyle verticillata is definitely a foreground plant which can also be used in garden ponds. It can also be used as an indoor plant if the soil is kept moist. See more at tropica.com
