Italy’s Crypto Jews Revive a Secret Passover Tradition - The Seder Haimshi

31:26
Rabbi Barbara Aiello, Italy's first woman rabbi, is a world renowned authority on pluralistic Judaism as well as master story teller of little known Jewish history.  On Thursday April 14th @8:15PM EST, Rabbi Barbara Aiello hosted a live online google+ hangout event revealing a Secret Passover Tradition? Click below to sign up for Rabbi's email list to receive reminders for this event and others: https://www.facebook.com/RabbiBarbara/app/166303603381066/ Five hundred years ago while Inquisition authorities were arresting, jailing and persecuting Spanish, Portuguese and Italian Jews for "judaizing" (practicing in secret), there were courageous Christian families who secretly opened their homes to Jews so that they could hold a Passover seder on a night that would not arouse the suspicion of the Inquisition's henchmen. That's how the Hamishi Seder was born. Under the cover of darkness, deep in the basement rooms of their homes, and at great personal peril, Christians opened their doors to their Jewish neighbors, allowing them to kasher the space.  With a table laden with symbolic Passover food and "pane azimo," unleavened bread, our ancestors had the opportunity to hold their  and hold their secret seder.    Some historians believe that the Russian painter, Moshe Maimon’s most famous work, “Marranos: Secret Seder,” actually tells the story of the Seder Hamishi, a special Passover seder, held, not on the first or second night of Passover, but, as its name suggests, on the fifth night of the holiday.  Legend has it that during the time of the Inquisition, first in Spain, then in Portugal and finally on the islands of Sicily and Sardinia and into Italy’s mainland, Jews who had been forced into Christian conversion (b’nai anusim) were helped, surprisingly, by their Christian neighbors.  Join Rabbi Barbara Aiello for an explanation of the history of the Seder Hamishi and learn how you can incorporate these unique traditions  into your family's seder experience. In the modern period, the community flourished all the way up until the Second World War and the horrors of the Holocaust. The community's art has been preserved in Jerusalem in a museum built in one of the most beautiful buildings in the Holy City. Our Shelby Weiner has the story.

Professor Ilan Stavans: "Crypto-Jews: To Be and Not to Be"

01:26:23
“Crypto-Jews: To Be and Not to Be”: If the Jews, a steadfast people united by a single, never-ending book, are praised for surviving across centuries through a variety of assimilation strategies, crypto-Jews are a unique “people-within-a-people.” From before the fateful 1492 to the present, their presence in Hispanic civilization is at once ubiquitous and discreet, their contribution to science, finances, philosophy, and the arts unquestionable. How does their “revealed secret” work? Ilan Stavans is the Lewis-Sebring Professor of the Humanities, Latin American and Latino Culture at Amherst College, the publisher of Restless Books, the host of NPR’s podcast In Contrast, and a columnist for the New York Times en Español. An internationally-renowned essayist, translator, and literary critic who is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, Stavans’ books include On Borrowed Words, Dictionary Days, El Iluminado. He adapted Don Quixote into a graphic novel and is also the editor of The Schocken Book of Modern Sephardic Literature, The FSG Book of Twentieth-Century Latin American Poetry, and The Norton Anthology of Latino Literature. The Nov. 7 lecture was sponsored by the Harry Spindel Memorial Lecture Fund.

America's BIG secret: We're ALL Crypto-Jews!!!

24:02
Quite by accident, I discovered my family (NOT ME) are crypto-jews on Ancestry.com. Thereafter, I learned my family (cousins) are Luciferian Kabbalah-practicing Talmud-practicing Jews which has been the "family secret" for over a century, probably much longer. I also know my home state of Indiana (so-named after the goddess, Diana, with the sexual reference "in", hence In-Diana) is populated primarily by crypto-jews who practice their "religion" at their Freemason lodges. My cousins usually attend a Protestant church in their community and one cousin has sang in his Methodist choir for over 40 years. This is why American churches are apostate given they have Freemasons for both pastors AND congregations and only the "true" bible believing Christians are none the wiser, such as my family once was. Here's the link to my testimony and what it was like growing up amid Illuminati yet never knowing it until 56 years later! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lou8p4CKbM4&t=340s If you have any personal inquiries, do not hesitate to contact me via private message. Kind regards & God bless, Cynthia Here are links to videos showing the crypto-jews in Hollywood: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ooCwQdByfT0 AND https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lpJtky4XGA

Episode 738 | Crypto-Jews in New Mexico

22:11
This week we present a companion piece to the national program "The Story of the Jews," which airs beginning March 25th. NMiF Producer Megan Kamerick focuses on the experience of conversos or "crypto-Jews" in New Mexico. In 1492, the Edict of Expulsion launched the diaspora of Sephardic Jews from Spain. Many found their way to the New World, including New Mexico, although they could not openly practice their religion. Dr. Frances Levine, director of the New Mexico History Museum, and historian Roger Martínez-Dávila flesh out the history of these people and their role in New Mexico heritage and identity. Sonya Loya, an artisan and educator who has recovered her family's secret Jewish past, discusses her personal journey and conversion to Judaism.

The Crusades were the impetus behind all of this empire-building, which Venice was the main financial power behind. In other words, the Norman/Templars had reconstructed the old Phoenician Empire, almost in its entirety If in fact the Normans had been acting as agents for Venice in this campaign, it adds weight to conspiracy theories that Venice itself was Phoenicia reborn in the heart of Italy. Venizia was identical to Phoenicia in almost every way- a bustling, cosmopolitan maritime empire built on trade and finance, given to cultural and religious heterodoxy and seen as a den of conspiracy and intrigue. Given that ethnic Phoenicians the Severans had come to rule Rome as the "Syrian Emperors"- establishing Sun worship as the new state religion- it's not out of the realm of possibility at all that Phoenicians could have come into Italy from North Africa and Asia Minor, assimilated themselves to a certain degree and rebuilt their empire as Christian Rome collapsed into chaos and ruin in the Fifth Century. Venice did just happen to rise as Rome fell.

Scholarly Families of Sephardic Origin in Early Renaissance Italy

Fabrizio Lelli (University of Lecce) visits UCLA to give 3 seminars on the "Scholarly Families of Sephardic Origin in Early Renaissance Italy." Rabbi Barbara Aiello takes you on this challenging journey through the “toe” of the Italian “boot,” as she shares the joys and struggles of the “bnei anusim,” – Italians whose families were forced into Christian conversion centuries ago. Obscure alley ways, secret rooms and hidden traditions come to life as locals share family stories of Jewish traditions that for centuries were hiding in plain sight. “I’m Italian but could I be Jewish too?” Rabbi Barbara’s journey courageously answers that question that has mystified southern Italians for centuries and offers a glimpse into a piece of Jewish history that has only recently come to light. Rabbi Barbara Aiello Secret Passover Tradition - The Seder Haimshi

31:26
Rabbi Barbara Aiello: http://www.rabbibarbara.com/about/rabbi/ On Thursday April 14th @8:15PM EST, Rabbi Barbara Aiello hosted a live online google+ hangout event revealing a Secret Passover Tradition? "Rabbi Barbara Aiello's mission is to serve our Jewish "meshpucha" in ways that are exciting and exhilarating and meeting the needs of a modern world." ITALY: VATICAN: POPE JOHN PAUL MEETS LEADER OF JEWISH ORGANIZATION

02:01
English/Nat The Pope has met (Monday) representatives of the largest Jewish Organization in the world which has more the 12 (m) million members. The leader of B'Nai B'Rith invited the Pope to visit Israel, and urged him to send a Vatican delegation to the forthcoming conference in Egypt on combatting terrorism. Talking about the recent terrorist attacks in Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv, the Pope emphasized the need to concentrate on what unites rather than on what divides. The leader of the B'Nai B'Rith International, the largest Jewish Organization in the world today met with the Pope at a private audience. The meeting comes in the wake of the recent spate of terrorist attacks in Israel. Before delivering his speech Tommy Baer introduced his wife to the Pope. The leader of the delegation asked the Pontiff to use his authority to help assure peace in the city of Jerusalem. Mr. Baer also urged him to send a delegation from the Vatican to the coming summit on terrorism and thanked the Pope for denouncing anti-semitism. SOUNDBITE: (English) " Today, the focus of our prayers, all our prayers is upon Jerusalem, the city of peace in the most difficult time. We would ask the Holy Father to use the great weight of your moral authority to help assure peace in the troubled city, to help assure the success of the peace process, and at your earliest convenience to fulfill your promise to visit Israel. We would ask your Holiness to consider sending a delegation from the Vatican to the summit on terrorism at the conference to show solidarity with Israel and with the peace makers." SUPERCAPTION: Mr Tommy Baer - leader of the B'Nai B'Rith International Organisation The Pope appealed for prayers for peace in Israel. The Pope is determined to repair long-strained Vatican-Jewish relations and has done much to bridge differences, including the establishment of diplomatic relations with Israel. Pope John Paul II told the Jewish delegation that peace efforts shaken by the bombings in Israel must be stepped up. SOUNDBITE: (English) "At a time when hopes for peace have again been jeopardized by recent terrorist attacks in Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv, we must renew our prayers and our efforts to insist on what unites rather than on what divides and separates." He discussed how the presence of the Conversos in Italian society, living a borderline existence between the two faith communities, restructured in a natural way the perception of the religious other among the Jewish polemicists, as well. In this presentation he focused on the Anti-Christian Jewish polemical literature of that ear with the question, Was Yehuda Aryeh me-Modena's 'Magen wa-Hereb' destined for a Converso Audience?
