The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of the Army are proposing a clear, understandable, and implementable definition of “waters of the United States” that clarifies federal authority under the Clean Water Act. Unlike the Obama administration's 2015 definition of “waters of the United States,” the proposal contains a straightforward definition that would result in significant cost savings, protect the nation’s navigable waters, help sustain economic growth, and reduce barriers to business development. The Civil War and Reconstruction (HIST 119) In this lecture, Professor Blight discusses some of the conflicts, controversies, and compromises that led up to the Civil War. After analyzing Frederick Douglass's 1852 Fourth of July speech and the inherent conflict between American slavery and American freedom, the lecture moves into a lengthy discussion of the war with Mexico in the 1840s. Professor Blight explains why northerners and southerners made "such a fuss" over the issue of slavery's expansion into the western territories. The lecture ends with the crisis over California's admission to statehood and the Compromise of 1850. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Douglass's July Fourth Speech 12:36 - Chapter 2. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIt5-RFh6wQ&fmt=18 The fine-grained sedimentary rock known as oil shale contains significant amounts of kerogen (a solid mixture of organic chemical compounds), from which technology can extract liquid hydrocarbons. (Geologists may regard the name oil shale as a misnomer, since the rock does not necessarily consist of a shale and its kerogen differs from crude oil; it requires more processing than crude oil, which affects its economic viability as a crude-oil substitute and increases its environmental impact.) Deposits of oil shale are located around the world, including major deposits in the United States of America. Global deposits are estimated as equivalent to 2.8 trillion to 3.3 trillion barrels (450×109 to 520×109 m3) of recoverable oil. The chemical process of pyrolysis can convert the kerogen in oil shale into synthetic crude oil. Heating oil shale to a sufficiently high temperature will drive off a vapor which processing can distill (retort) to yield a petroleum-like shale oil—a form of non-conventional oil—and combustible shale gas (the term shale gas can also refer to gas occurring naturally in shales). Industry can also burn oil shale directly as a low-grade fuel for power generation and heating purposes and can use it as a raw material in chemical and construction-materials processing. Oil shale has gained attention as an energy resource as the price of conventional sources of petroleum has risen and as a way for some areas to secure independence from external suppliers of energy. At the same time, oil shale mining and processing involve a number of environmental issues, such as land use, waste disposal, water use, waste-water management, greenhouse-gas emissions and air pollution. Estonia and China have well-established oil shale industries, and Brazil, Germany, Israel and Russia also utilize oil shale. Oil shale consists of organic-rich sedimentary rock: it belongs to the group of sapropel fuels. It differs from bitumen-impregnated rocks (tar sands and petroleum reservoir rocks), humic coals and carbonaceous shale. While tar sands originate from the biodegradation of oil, heat and pressure have not (yet) transformed the kerogen in oil shales into petroleum. Coal contains a higher percentage of organic matter than oil shale. In commercial grades of oil shale the ratio of organic matter to mineral matter lies approximately between 0.75:5 and 1.5:5. At the same time, the organic matter in oil shale has an atomic ratio of hydrogen to carbon (H/C) approximately 1.2 to 1.8 times lower than for crude oil and about 1.5 to 3 times higher than for coals. Oil shale does not have a definite geological definition nor a specific chemical formula. Oil shales vary considerably in their mineral content, chemical composition, age, type of kerogen, and depositional history. Oil shale seams do not always have discrete boundaries and the carbonaceous content varies. Scottish oil shales frequently exhibit a change from no carbonaceous content through a range of carbonaceous content and back to non-carbonaceous shales. As a rule of thumb, the better the oil shale, the more chocolaty-brown the streak and the more woody the sound when struck by a hammer. The organic components of oil shale derive from a variety of organisms, such as the remains of algae, spores, pollen, plant cuticles and corky fragments of herbaceous and woody plants, and cellular debris from other aquatic and land plants. Some deposits contain significant fossils; Germany's Messel Pit has the status of a Unesco World Heritage Site. The mineral matter in oil shale includes various fine-grained silicates and carbonates. Geologists can classify oil shales on the basis of their composition as carbonate-rich shales, siliceous shales, or cannel shales. Another classification, known as the van Krevelen diagram, assigns kerogen types, depending on the hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen content of oil shales' original organic matter. The most commonly used classification of oil shales, developed between 1987 and 1991 by Adrian C. Hutton of the University of Wollongong, adapts petrographic terms from coal terminology. This classification designates oil shales as terrestrial, lacustrine (lake-bottom-deposited), or marine (ocean bottom-deposited), based on the environment where the initial biomass was deposited. Hutton's classification scheme has proven useful in estimating the yield and composition of the extracted oil

THE U.S. HAS ENORMOUS UNTAPPED ENERGY POTENTIAL. LET'S TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT THE OPPORTUNITIES FOR DOMESTIC PRODUCTION. ALONG WITH THE EAGLE FORD SHALE IN SOUTH TEXAS, & THE BAKKEN SHALE IN NORTH DAKOTA, THE PERMIAN BASIN IS THE LATEST EXAMPLE IN A NEW WAVE OF “UNCONVENTIONAL” SHALE OPERATIONS. UNCONVENTIONAL SHALE WAS ONCE THOUGHT TO BE TOO EXPENSIVE TO DEVELOP. HOWEVER, THE ADVENT OF HORIZONTAL DRILLING & HYDRAULIC FRACTURING OVER THE LAST 5 YEARS HAS CHANGED THAT. SINCE THE DEVELOPMENT OF THESE TECHNOLOGIES, DRILLING OPERATIONS HAVE INCREASED SUBSTANTIALLY IN THE PERMIAN BASIN & OTHER AREAS. IN FACT, EXPERTS BELIEVE PERMIAN OIL PRODUCTION WILL DOUBLE OVER THE NEXT 10 YEARS, TO 3 MILLION BARRELS A DAY. Clearly the d3evelopmetn of unconventional oil reserves in the Permian basin is helping to significantly decrease our dependence on foreign oil & it's creating 1000s of American jobs. Geologists have known for a long time that the Wolfcamp formation here was oil barrack but it took a combination of commodity price improvement & improvements in technologies for Tall City & other companies like us to economically develop these reserves. What differentiates the Permian basin from other oil & gas plays across the US is its shear size, its aerial existent. Additionally we have multiple stack pays at the Permian. What that means is with a single horizontal well we set up future drilling opportunities both shallower & deeper than where we are drilling today. What that means is; with a single plot of land we set up numerous years of drilling inventory. TALL CITY EXPLORATION IS A PRIVATE ENERGY COMPANY THAT EXPLORES & PRODUCES OIL & NATURAL GAS FROM THE PERMIAN BASIN. TALL CITY IS ONE OF THE MANY SMALLER ENERGY COMPANIES USING HORIZONTAL DRILLING & HYDRAULIC FRACTURING TO DEVELOP UNCONVENTIONAL RESOURCES IN SHALE. MANY OF TALL CITY’S FOUNDERS & EMPLOYEES HAVE SPENT THEIR CAREERS STUDYING & WORKING THE PERMIAN BASIN. My partner Joe Magoto & I founded Tall City in 2012 to apply horizontal drilling & fracture stimulation techniques in the Middle Basin very mature oil & gas province; in fact oil was discovered here way back in the 1920s. Tall City just drilled a new well just 2 miles from the original Santa Rita discovery well that came on for over 1000 barrels a day. It’s amazing to us that after 100 years of continuous operations we're still able to make wells like that. What a fantastic place to do business. WITH OFFICES IN BOTH MIDLAND & HOUSTON, TEXAS, TALL CITY HAS LEASED AN ASTOUNDING 90,000 ACES OF LAND IN THE BASIN FOR HORIZONTAL DRILLING. ACCUMULATING THAT MUCH ACREAGE IN A COMPETITIVE MARKET LIKE THE PERMIAN WAS A TOUGH TASK FOR TALL CITY, BUT NOT IMPOSSIBLE THANKS TO MANAGEMENT’S LONG-STANDING HISTORY WITH THE REGION. Having a network of local contacts & resources means we are among the first to hear about deals or opportunities many times before larger companies. The same network along with the size of our company allows us to close deals & begin operations more quickly then larger more bureaucratic organizations. THE SUCCESS OF OIL & GAS OPERATIONS IN THE PERMIAN BASIN & OTHER AREAS HAS HAD A PROFOUND EFFECT ON THE COUNTRY FAR & WIDE. HERE IN WEST TEXAS, YOU CAN SEE & FEEL THE HUSTLE & BUSTLE EVERYWHERE YOU GO, & IT’S NOT JUST OIL EXECUTIVES THAT BENEFIT. A successful well not only benefits the oil operator like Tall City but it also has a positive impact on the government all the service companies & vendors that were involved, the surface land owners & the mineral owners that we lease from. On a recent well that we drilled there were over 90 vendors that were used along with all their multiple personnel. THAT SAME WELL IS EXPECTED TO GENERATE 20 MILLION DOLLARS IN TAX REVENUE OVER THE COURSE OF ITS LIFETIME, & 15 MILLION DOLLARS IN ROYALTY PAYMENTS TO INDIVIDUAL LANDOWNERS, MOST OF WHOM ARE LOCAL RANCHERS. GIVEN THAT OVER 300 HORIZONTAL RIGS ARE CURRENTLY OPERATING IN THE PERMIAN BASIN, THE POTENTIAL IMPACT ON THE LOCAL ECONOMY IS STAGGERING. The influence of the current oil & gas shell boom to be felt everywhere in Midland these days. Anyone you talk to locally either works for an oil & gas company or touch's the energy in some form or fashion. With over 500 rigs operating across the Permian basin each new well that gets drilled provides tax revenue to the local communities & it also most importantly provides jobs. We think the Wolfcamp is one of the most exciting unconventional plays in the United States today & its only just beginning. Tall City is proud to play a part in its boundaries of the play.

The conference focuses on three key areas. First, the economics of rising sea levels for real coastal estate markets, which comprise a large portion of US housing market growth and hence personal wealth. The economics of ‘stranded carbon assets.’ That is, the raw materials and financial assets tied up in carbon release that have a high current value but whose values could decline precipitously in the future, especially if ambitious action is undertaken as scientific consensus suggests is needed. The third is the organized politics of climate denial: who are the agents and institutions behind scientific disinformation and how can such a politics best be countered? A lunchtime keynote speech will be given by Rhode Island Senator Sheldon Whitehouse. Lunch will be provided for participants. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city had an estimated population of 488,943 in 2017, making it the 37th most-populous city in the United States and the most populated city of the Kansas City metropolitan area. It also has the fifth highest murder rate out of every city in the United States. Kansas City was founded in the 1830s as a Missouri River port east of its confluence with the Kansas River. It was named after the Kansa or Kaw people who had their significant populations in what is now the state of Kansas. On June 1, 1850, the town of Kansas was incorporated; shortly after came the establishment of the Kansas Territory. Confusion between the two ensued and the name Kansas City was assigned to distinguish them soon after. Sitting on Missouri's western boundary, with Downtown near the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers, the historic city encompasses some 319.03 square miles (826.3 km2), making it the 23rd largest city by total area in the United States. Most of the city lies within Jackson County, but portions spill into Clay, Cass, and Platte counties. Along with Independence, one of its major suburbs, it serves as one of the two county seats of Jackson County. Other cities with a population of over 50,000 in the Kansas City metropolitan area include the Kansas cities of Overland Park, Kansas City, Olathe, Shawnee, Lenexa and the Missouri cities of Lee's Summit and Blue Springs. Time is money: An animated infographic showing the top three economies throughout history. Does China have the world's largest economy? Is China's economy bigger than America's? Time is money–the world's largest economies throughout history. At the start of the Common Era, India was the world’s largest economy, followed by China. The far-flung Roman Empire came a distant third. A thousand years later, it looked almost the same. But third place shifted to Byzantium, in modern-day Turkey. Five hundred years after that, Italy returned, rich from renaissance trade. Over several centuries, other European powers vied for third: initially France, and then Britain. China and India swapped places. After the industrial revolution, the top three economies accounted for less than half of global output. In the 20th century, America dominated. China temporarily fell away. Russia made the top three. As did Japan. Britain dropped down. Now the modern world resembles the distant past: China and India are back, along with a single Western economy. And America’s preeminence is over. China overtakes US as the world's largest economy. The Individual World Poetry Slam Finals in Washington, D.C. A poet and activist originating from the war-town region of Darfur, Emi Mahmoud is the reigning Individual World Poetry Slam Champion of 2015—the number one poet in the world this year. Currently a senior at Yale University, a Leonore Annenberg Scholar, and Global Health Fellow, Emi studies Anthropology and Molecular Biology at Yale in the hopes of one day alleviating structural disparities on maternal and child health in disadvantaged communities the world over. Outside of academics, Emi is involved in the Yale Refugee Project, contributes to an international research initiative, and teaches spoken word poetry on campus and through ConnCAT in order to empower youth with the power of voice in various communities. In recent years, Emi has participated in and co-coached the Yale CUPSI slam team. As a child and adolescent, Emi was a public speaker presenting poetry across the country as part of the Darfur Alert Coalition and raising awareness and aid to address the often blood-relative victims of genocide in Darfur, her homeland. A member of the Loser Slam NPS 2015 National team and 2015 World Champion, Emi has and continues to collaborate with various artists in an attempt to use poetry and other art forms to celebrate the full extent of human expression.

Discover how the issue of slavery came to dominate American politics, and how political leaders struggled and failed to resolve the growing crisis in the nation. A House Divided: The Road to Civil War, 1850-1861, is a course that begins by examining how generations of historians have explained the crisis of the Union. After discussing the institution of slavery and its central role in the southern and national economies, it turns to an account of the political and social history of the 1850s. It traces how the issue of the expansion of slavery came to dominate national politics, and how political leaders struggled, unsuccessfully, to resolve the growing crisis. We will examine the impact of key events such as Bleeding Kansas, the Dred Scott decision, the Lincoln-Douglas debates, and John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry, and end with the dissolution of the Union in the winter of 1860-1861. This course is part of the series, The Civil War and Reconstruction, which introduces students to the most pivotal era in American history. The Civil War transformed the nation by eliminating the threat of secession and destroying the institution of slavery. It raised questions that remain central to our understanding of ourselves as a people and a nation — the balance of power between local and national authority, the boundaries of citizenship, and the meanings of freedom and equality. The series will examine the causes of the war, the road to secession, the conduct of the Civil War, the coming of emancipation, and the struggle after the war to breathe meaning into the promise of freedom for four million emancipated slaves. One theme throughout the series is what might be called the politics of history — how the world in which a historian lives affects his or her view of the past, and how historical interpretations reinforce or challenge the social order of the present. Eric Foner, DeWitt Clinton Professor of History at Columbia University, is one of the most prominent historians in the United States. Professor Foner is the author or editor of over twenty books concentrating on the intersections of intellectual, political and social history and the history of American race relations. His recent book, The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize, the Bancroft Prize, and the Lincoln Prize. He is the author of Give Me Liberty!: An American History, a widely-used survey textbook of U. S. history published by W. W. Norton. Additionally, he is the recipient of the Presidential Award for Outstanding Teaching from Columbia University. He is one of only two persons ever to serve as president of the three major professional organizations: the American Historical Association, Organization of American Historians, and Society of American Historians. As co-curator of two award-winning historical exhibitions, and through frequent appearances in newspapers and magazines and on radio and television discussion programs, he has also endeavored to bring historical knowledge to a broad public outside the university.
