Blockchain tutorial 15: Convert public, private key pairs to addresses

01:42
This is part 15 of the Blockchain tutorial explaining why some Blockchain implementations convert public, private key pairs to addresses. In this video series different topics will be explained which will help you to understand blockchain. Bitcoin released as open source software in 2009 is a cryptocurrency invented by Satoshi Nakamoto (unidentified person or group of persons). After the introduction of Bitcoin many Bitcoin alternatives were created. These alternate cryptocurrencies are called Altcoins (Litecoin, Dodgecoin etc). Bitcoin's underlying technology is called Blockchain. The Blockchain is a distributed decentralized incorruptible database (ledger) that records blocks of digital information. Each block contains a timestamp and a link to a previous block. Soon people realises that there many other use cases where the Blockchain technology can be applied and not just as a cryptocurrency application. New Blockchain platforms were created based on the Blockchain technology, one of which is called Ethereum. Ethereum focuses on running programming code, called smart contracts, on any decentralized application. Using the new Blockchain platforms, Blockchain technology can be used in supply chain management, healthcare, real estate, identity management, voting, internet of things, etcetera, just to name a few. Today there is a growing interest in Blockchain not only in the financial sector but also in other sectors. Explaining how Blockchain works is not easy and for many the Blockchain technology remains an elusive concept. This video series tries to explain Blockchain to a large audience but from the bottom up. Keywords often used in Blockchain conversation will be explained. Each Blockchain video is short and to the point. It is recommended to watch each video sequentially as I may refer to certain Blockchain topics explained earlier. Finding a Private Key with Heartbleed

00:58
This trivial script finds a lot of the private key from the CloudFlare Challenge server in 100 requests, in just a few seconds. HOWEVER, I think we are not finding the original key used by nginx, but the RAM used to collect the winning entry, so this does not prove the point. Only the first winner did that. Thanks to Kevin, a CCSF student, for sending me his partial solution which showed me how easy this is. More information here: http://samsclass.info/124/proj14/heartbleed.htm

Bitcoiners Who Kept Their Coins on Exchanges Faired Better Than Those Holding Their Private Keys

11:59
So a couple days back on August 1, 2017 the Bitcoin hard fork or split happenned leaving us with Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash. Now something I found ironic about the whole situation is this. Everyone preaches to hold your private keys and I agree with that sentiment don't get me wrong. When you keep your coins on an exchange your trusting them to hold them, your trusting them to give them to you when you want them, you're trusting them not to get hacked, you are putting a lot of trust in them. That said I just find it ironic that the people who before August 1 sent their Bitcoins to say Bittrex an exchange for example had the chance to cash out their Bitcoin Cash at upwards of $1300 where as people like myself and others who kept are Bitcoins on a Trezor or Electrum are unable to access our Bitcoin Cash, at least not in a way that's 100% safe to do or easy to do so. I just found that ironic. One other thing I wanted to comment on in this video is I think the people in the Bitcoin world who choose to store their coins on exchanges are underrepresented. I see a lot of people saying they are stupid. Don't get me wrong I'm not arguing that an exchange is better than controlling your own Bitcoin, however not everyone is super passionate about the technology, not everyone is a techy, and some people are worried and probably rightfully so that controlling their own Bitcoins could be more dangerous than storing them on an exchange if they don't know what they are doing. I'm not saying storing your coins on an exchange is free of risk, however the same way we trust Charles Schwab or Scottrade or eTrade to hold our stock as opposed to holding physical stock certificates, there's a portion of the population who are just investors or speculators and are not developers or techies who want to invest in and be a part of the Bitcoin space but would prefer to let an expert like Coinbase store them for them as opposed to storing them themselves. And again while I'm not necessarily recommending people store their coins on an exchange, I think exchanges have come a long way since the days of MtGox. Coinbase for example is licensed and insured and to the best of my knowledge has not been hacked and I feel like their vault feature is pretty darn secure so if someone wants to store their coins on Coinbase I don't think it's the end of the world. Standalone Bitcoin Offline Wallet Printer Demo

01:33
This is a demo of a protoype bitcoin paper wallet printer I have built. The device is completely standalone and includes a bitcoin address generator and integrated printer. The internal random number generator continuosly tests itself against a subset of the NIST statistical test suite to ensure the random number generator is operating securely. The random number source is based on this project. http://robseward.com/misc/RNG2/ More information on paper wallets and how they can be securely generated is here. There is more information here. https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Paper_wallet This device fills the gap that you currently need to protect any computer and printer you use to print paper wallets against malware. This printer cannot be connected to the internet so if you trust the hardware and software built into it you can safely generate paper wallets. For those that are interested heres a picture of the innards of the device. http://imgur.com/OeGyVCB

Stablecoins with MakerDAO | EthereumMadrid went to Berlin @Private Key Meetup

01:14:14
This time we travelled to Berlin where we were invited by the Private Key Meetup to present our introduction to cryptoeconomics and the stablecoin project from MakerDAO. Part One (0'52) https://goo.gl/XfV8Qg Cryptoeconomics is the fundamental layer of all blockchains and blockchain projects. It is about using economic incentives to design mechanisms that encourage people to participate in the network by behaving in a certain way, the economic way. Sandra from Ethereum Madrid will introduce the fundamentals of cryptoeconomics. Part Two (14'14) https://goo.gl/oLYzMv Using Ether or Bitcoin to operate a company or to buy products has one great disadvantage: the volatility of the currency. As it is impossible to know the price of Bitcoin or Ether for the next few days or months, it is risky to use them as a mean of exchange. A stablecoin, which price would fluctuate as much as the major fiat currencies in circulation but without the volatility of the cryptocurrencies of today, would allow the ecosystem of blockchain-based organizations to pay wages and bills, borrow or raise capital in a more predictable and reliable way. How are stablecoins issued, how do they acquire value, and how are they stabilised? How are decisions made to correct deviations and how to deal with crisis? What are the economic incentives that allow decisions to be made in favor of stability and personal profit at the same time? All of this in a decentralised fashion, while at the same time making decision-makers responsible? Laurent and Sandra from EthereumMadrid will explain the stablecoin technology developed by Maker as an illustration of the concepts of cryptoeconomics. Part Three (56'43) https://goo.gl/9MF8Ey Denis, from the Maker team, will introduce how Maker is using formal verification in their smart contracts in order to mathematically verify and prove what can and cannot be done. What Is Public Key & Private Key | Blockchain Demo Part 2 | Hindi

09:11
When someone sends you cryptocoins over the Blockchain, they are actually sending them to a hashed version of what’s known as the “Public Key”. There is another key which is hidden from them, that is known as the “Private Key.” This Private Key is used to derive the Public Key. You can know your own Private Key, and everyone else on the Blockchain knows their own Private Key, but the Private Key should not be shared with outsiders (that is, unless you want your cryptocurrencies to be stolen!). www.nodearts.com

This certainly isn’t the most money lost in any single hack, but regardless, it could have been prevented if those individuals were aware of and took seriously, certain safety protocols. They lost funds because the hackers were able to reroute the traffic intended for MyEtherWallet and sent them instead to a malicious site which pretty much just absorbed the funds being stored in the wallets of the individuals who logged into their wallet via the malicious site. It’s been noted that the most impressive aspect to this hack isn’t the amount of Ethereum taken, but instead how the hackers were able to identify and take advantage of certain internet protocols like the Domain Name System (DNS). In defense of the legit MyEtherWallet site, there was a warning issued highlighting the invalid security certificate. There was a kind of tragic report from a man who apparently went to the MEW site and then despite the security warning, continued to log into his wallet and was greeted with a 10 second timer counting down the time until all of his funds would be transferred to the hacker. So now that we generally know what happened, allow me to show you a pretty easy way to side step this situation altogether so you can have peace of mind knowing that you won’t be vulnerable to hacks like this in the future when you want to use MyEtherWallet in particular. It’s pretty cool actually, basically, you can download an offline version of MyEtherWallet. This means you don’t need to trust that the web servers are directing you to the legitimate MyEtherWallet web page. Here’s how you do it: Go to the MyEtherWallet GitHub. Find and click on the etherwallet .zip file in order to download it: “etherwallet-vX.X.X.X.zip” You should then move this file onto a USB drive so that you can then plug it into your offline computer in the future. Once your computer is disconnected from any internet connection, or if you want to use this on a computer that has never had access to the internet in the first place, you can plug in this USB drive and extract these files onto your computer. Once you’re ready to interact with this offline version of MyEtherWallet, you can do so by selecting the index.html file which will open your web browser (even if you are not connected to an internet connection.) From here you’ll be able to generate new wallets and send transactions by using the “Send Offline” section, all while being disconnected from the internet. The MyEtherWallet team does reccommend periodically updating your now local version of MEW since they do update the actual website from time to time.

#HITBGSEC 2017 CommSec D2 - 2FAssassin: Bypass 2FA, Stealing Private Keys, And More - Maxwell Koh

28:57
The “knowledge factor” (using passwords for authentication) will never be enough for security. We need the second layer of defense — a “possession factor” or sometimes called the “Two-Factor Authentication”, hence the term, “2FA”. Nowadays many organization plans to adopt password-free login to authenticate their systems, thereby completely replacing the password-based authentication with key-based authentication, which they believed is more secure. However, the truth is far from reality. Although 2FA creates a formidable barrier against potential security breaches, however it doesn’t guarantee much security at all, especially when it comes to the inefficacious and often futile private key protection. In that sense, we can say that the effectiveness of the 2FA depends on how well they can protect “something only user has”. In fact, there are many ways to steal someone’s private keys without performing social engineering attacks. This talk is dedicated to discuss and demonstrate the newly discovered techniques to bypass the two-factor authentication by stealing and cracking OTP, private keys, and client certificates. By that means, an attacker must compromise the voice or text message accounts, software token, infecting memory agents, cracking passphrase, stealing hardware token, etc. With the help from the “2FAssassin” we could turn these looted keys for more fun and profits. The demonstration will include the scenario where the private keys are compromised and then show how an attacker could leverage the situation to gain more access into the corporate networks and for making profits. These are not limited to systems that used single sign-on (with 2FA enabled), public key authentication (e.g., password-less authentication, authorized_keys abuse), free software token (e.g., Google Authenticator), website owner (e.g., phishing sites created using stolen private key), and even software vendor (e.g., stolen private key can be used to sign the malicious malware). The tool will automate the exploitations against the common vulnerabilities that lead to the private key leakage. It can be used to compromise individual system, or the entire network using looted private keys. It also capable to analyze and identify potential private keys, key information extraction in order to profile the target servers, cracking and removing the passphrase, injecting arbitrary key-based backdoors, building multi-chained covert tunnels by leveraging on the loopholes found in vulnerable public key authentication. Nevertheless, the talk will end with recommendations to protect the private keys from theft, as well as what to do during the worst case scenario. === Maxwell is a penetration tester with Trustwave’s SpiderLabs Asia-Pacific. SpiderLabs is one of the world’s largest specialist security teams, with over 100 consultants spread across North America, South America, Europe and the Asia Pacific. SpiderLabs has a focus on original security research and regularly presents at conferences such as BlackHat, DefCon, OWASP, Hack In The Box and Ruxcon. Maxwell is based out of Singapore and his primary focus is on providing penetration testing service to clients in the Asia-Pacific region.

CONFidence 2016: Recover a RSA private key from a TLS session (Marco Ortisi)

37:18
Recover a RSA private key from a TLS session with Perfect Forward Secrecy They always taught us that the only thing it can be pulled out from a SSL/TLS session using strong authentication and latest state-of-art (Perfect Forward Secrecy) ciphersuites is the public key of the certificate exchanged during the TLS handshake, an insufficient condition to place a MiTM attack without to generate alarms on the validity of the TLS connection and certificate itself. Anyway, this is not always true. In certain circumstances it is possible to derive the private key of server regardless the size of modulus used. Even RSA keys of 4096 bits can be factored at the cost of a few CPU cycles and computational resources. All that needed is the generation of a faulty digital signature from server, an event that can be observed when occuring error conditions such as CPU overheating and/or hardware faults. Because of these premises devices like firewall, switch, router and other embedded appliances are more exposed than traditional IT servers or clients. During the talk, the author will explain the theory behind the attack, how common are the factors that make it possible, and his customized implementation of the technique. At the end a proof-of-concept able to work both in passive mode (i.e. only sniffing the network traffic) and in active mode (namely, partecipating directly in the establishment of TLS handshakes) will be released.
