Bitcoiners Who Kept Their Coins on Exchanges Faired Better Than Those Holding Their Private Keys

11:59
So a couple days back on August 1, 2017 the Bitcoin hard fork or split happenned leaving us with Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash. Now something I found ironic about the whole situation is this. Everyone preaches to hold your private keys and I agree with that sentiment don't get me wrong. When you keep your coins on an exchange your trusting them to hold them, your trusting them to give them to you when you want them, you're trusting them not to get hacked, you are putting a lot of trust in them. That said I just find it ironic that the people who before August 1 sent their Bitcoins to say Bittrex an exchange for example had the chance to cash out their Bitcoin Cash at upwards of $1300 where as people like myself and others who kept are Bitcoins on a Trezor or Electrum are unable to access our Bitcoin Cash, at least not in a way that's 100% safe to do or easy to do so. I just found that ironic. One other thing I wanted to comment on in this video is I think the people in the Bitcoin world who choose to store their coins on exchanges are underrepresented. I see a lot of people saying they are stupid. Don't get me wrong I'm not arguing that an exchange is better than controlling your own Bitcoin, however not everyone is super passionate about the technology, not everyone is a techy, and some people are worried and probably rightfully so that controlling their own Bitcoins could be more dangerous than storing them on an exchange if they don't know what they are doing. I'm not saying storing your coins on an exchange is free of risk, however the same way we trust Charles Schwab or Scottrade or eTrade to hold our stock as opposed to holding physical stock certificates, there's a portion of the population who are just investors or speculators and are not developers or techies who want to invest in and be a part of the Bitcoin space but would prefer to let an expert like Coinbase store them for them as opposed to storing them themselves. And again while I'm not necessarily recommending people store their coins on an exchange, I think exchanges have come a long way since the days of MtGox. Coinbase for example is licensed and insured and to the best of my knowledge has not been hacked and I feel like their vault feature is pretty darn secure so if someone wants to store their coins on Coinbase I don't think it's the end of the world. It’s the private address that you want to keep from exposing to potential hackers by keeping your computer offline while this is being displayed because it is the private key that allows you to withdraw the funds. Print out this page, make a copy just in case, or write it down, both the public and private keys or addresses and store somewhere very safe. Now when you are ready to move your bitcoin or you want to cash out, you can do this by creating a free account with blockchain.info. All you need is an email and password. Once you are signed up they will send you an email with your wallet ID, now this is very important because you’ll need this ID to log into this account. With your brand new account you’ll need to go to the settings menu and under the security options be sure to back up your account with the wallet recovery phrase. This will allow you to still gain access to your funds even if you forget your password. Once you’ve written down your recovery phrase store this in a safe place much like you would your private key for your paper wallet. How you import your paper wallet onto your blockchain.info account. Go to Settings and then select the addresses option. Here you can Import addresses. Now pay attention. In order to import your paper wallet you’ll need to type in the PRIVATE address of your paper wallet. It is for this reason that I highly suggest that you take out all coins from the paper wallet as the private key has essentially been compromised. Even if you want to continue storing some of your bitcoin on a paper wallet, just create a new paper wallet and store them there. Discontinue use of any paper wallet that has had it’s private key used anywhere on the internet. You can do so by getting your blockchain.info wallet address by selecting the “receive” option here, copy the address and then go to the “send” option and select the wallet you’d like to send coins from, and paste the address of the blockchain.info wallet. So you will have effectively imported your paper wallet and transferred all of your funds out of that paper wallet address and onto your blockchain.info wallet, the same wallet that is now backed up with your recovery phrase. Congratulations! Whenever you want to send coins from one wallet to another, this includes exchanges, since the coins you have on an exchange are in a wallet on that exchange… you’ll need to follow this general protocol. Three very important tips for anyone new to transferring their crypto: First, be sure the wallet you are sending your coins to is appropriate for the coins you are sending, you cannot send ethereum into a bitcoin address, or pivx to a Monero address, or steem to a steem backed dollar address. If you do this your coins will be lost. Second, be sure you input the correct address into the recipient field. I know most crypto addresses have a lot of upper and lower case letters and numbers and they can be daunting to look at at first, so I always double check the first few characters and the last few characters to be sure that I’m sending my coins to the right address. Third, if you need to transfer a large amount of coins and you’re nervous because it’s your first time transferring that particular coin or it’s your first time using that particular address, just send a small amount first. Once you see that it’s gone through then you can have some peace of mind that you can send the larger amount successfully.

Decentralized Key Management (DKMS): An Essential Missing Piece of the SSI Puzzle – Drummond Reed

01:02:58
http://ssimeetup.org/decentralized-key-management-dkms-essential-missing-piece-ssi-puzzle-drummond-reed-webinar-8/ Drummond Reed, Chief Trust Officer at Evernym and Sovrin Foundation Trustee, features in this Webinar “Decentralized Key Management (DKMS): An Essential Missing Piece of the SSI Puzzle”. If you can’t manage the keys for your DIDs (Decentralized Identifiers), then the SSI engine will never get started. That’s why DKMS (Decentralized Key Management System) is one of the core open standards in the DID “stack”. DKMS inverts a core assumption of conventional PKI (public key infrastructure) architecture, namely that public key certificates will be issued by centralized or federated certificate authorities (CAs). With DKMS, the initial “root of trust” for all participants is any blockchain or distributed ledger that supports DIDs. This webinar will explain why we need DKMS, what a DKMS-compatible identity wallet looks like, how DKMS can solve some longstanding problems in wallet backup and recovery, and where DKMS is headed for standardization.

Finding a Private Key with Heartbleed

00:58
This trivial script finds a lot of the private key from the CloudFlare Challenge server in 100 requests, in just a few seconds. HOWEVER, I think we are not finding the original key used by nginx, but the RAM used to collect the winning entry, so this does not prove the point. Only the first winner did that. Thanks to Kevin, a CCSF student, for sending me his partial solution which showed me how easy this is. More information here: http://samsclass.info/124/proj14/heartbleed.htm

#HITBGSEC 2017 CommSec D2 - 2FAssassin: Bypass 2FA, Stealing Private Keys, And More - Maxwell Koh

28:57
The “knowledge factor” (using passwords for authentication) will never be enough for security. We need the second layer of defense — a “possession factor” or sometimes called the “Two-Factor Authentication”, hence the term, “2FA”. Nowadays many organization plans to adopt password-free login to authenticate their systems, thereby completely replacing the password-based authentication with key-based authentication, which they believed is more secure. However, the truth is far from reality. Although 2FA creates a formidable barrier against potential security breaches, however it doesn’t guarantee much security at all, especially when it comes to the inefficacious and often futile private key protection. In that sense, we can say that the effectiveness of the 2FA depends on how well they can protect “something only user has”. In fact, there are many ways to steal someone’s private keys without performing social engineering attacks. This talk is dedicated to discuss and demonstrate the newly discovered techniques to bypass the two-factor authentication by stealing and cracking OTP, private keys, and client certificates. By that means, an attacker must compromise the voice or text message accounts, software token, infecting memory agents, cracking passphrase, stealing hardware token, etc. With the help from the “2FAssassin” we could turn these looted keys for more fun and profits. The demonstration will include the scenario where the private keys are compromised and then show how an attacker could leverage the situation to gain more access into the corporate networks and for making profits. These are not limited to systems that used single sign-on (with 2FA enabled), public key authentication (e.g., password-less authentication, authorized_keys abuse), free software token (e.g., Google Authenticator), website owner (e.g., phishing sites created using stolen private key), and even software vendor (e.g., stolen private key can be used to sign the malicious malware). The tool will automate the exploitations against the common vulnerabilities that lead to the private key leakage. It can be used to compromise individual system, or the entire network using looted private keys. It also capable to analyze and identify potential private keys, key information extraction in order to profile the target servers, cracking and removing the passphrase, injecting arbitrary key-based backdoors, building multi-chained covert tunnels by leveraging on the loopholes found in vulnerable public key authentication. Nevertheless, the talk will end with recommendations to protect the private keys from theft, as well as what to do during the worst case scenario. === Maxwell is a penetration tester with Trustwave’s SpiderLabs Asia-Pacific. WHAT IS A PAPER WALLET CRYPTO

What is a paper 📝 crypt purse 👛 ? This is the way of cold 🚿 (offline) crypt storage for long periods. It consists of two keys 🔑 (two sets of symbols or two QR-codes), which are used to manage your savings❗️. Can be printed on 📝(so this name) and looks like this: The Public 🔐 Key. This is the address for replenishing your wallet 👜 . You can give it to other people, or you can independently transfer the crypt to it.👍 Private Key🔑. This is a set of symbols that gives you access to withdraw 💵money from your wallet. Anyone who knows your private key has full access to the money💵 in your wallet👛. This character set or QR code should be kept as far as possible from other people's eyes🌝. Do I have to print my wallet on paper📝? You need to save a set of characters in order to have access to your wallet👜. If you lose them, you will forever lose access to your money💵. Theoretically, you can take a picture of your private 🔑key or save it as a text file on your computer💻. However, I do not recommend this because of the very high risk. Your phone 📲 or PC 💻has an Internet connection and therefore there is always a risk of theft of your data.      If a hacker👨🏻‍💻 steals your private 🔑 , then you instantly lose all your 💰 . The most popular solution is to print information on a sheet of 📝 and store it in a secluded place. 🎥 https://youtu.be/boyxo279rtA #paperpurse #qrcode #coldstorage #pc #public #hacker #cryptex #crypto #cryptocurrency #cryptotrading #cryptoinvestor #hodl #tothemoon #bulls #bears #trading #exchange #ripple #bitcoin #ethereum #btc #eth #xrp #litecoin #ltc #cardano #stellar #xlm #tron #verge #digibyte #trading #wallstreet

IOTA tutorial 17: Create and validate a signature

13:03
If you like this video and want to support me, go this page for my donation crypto addresses: https://www.youtube.com/c/mobilefish/about This is part 17 of the IOTA tutorial. HOW AN ADDRESS IS CALCULATED Before I explain how a signature in a bundle is created and validated, it is important to understand how IOTA addresses are calculated. In IOTA tutorial 9.1, I have explained in detail how the key, digests and address are created. Here is a short explanation: - A key (= private key) is generated using the seed, index number and security level. - The index number is an integer (0,1,2,.., 9007199254740991) and every address has a corresponding index number. - The generated key is divided in segments of 81 trytes each. - Depending on the selected security level (1,2 or 3) you will have (1x27=) 27, (2x27=) 54 or (3x27=) 81 segments. - Each key segment is hashed 26 times. - 27 key segments together forms a keyFragment and each keyFragment is hashed one time to create a digests. - Depending on the selected security level, 1, 2 or 3 digests are combined together. - The combined digests are hashed one time to create the address. HOW A SIGNATURE IS CREATED The generated key is divided in segments of 81 trytes each. Depending on the selected security level (1,2 or 3) you will have (1x27=) 27, (2x27=) 54 or (3x27=) 81 segments. To create a signature: - Calculate the normalizedBundleHash = normalizedBundle(bundleHash) The bundleHash is explained in IOTA tutorial 15. The normalizedBundleHash is explained in IOTA tutorial 16. - Convert each tryte in the normalizedBundleHash to its decimal value. - Apply for each decimal value the following calculation: K = 13 - decimal value. - Each key segment must be hashed K times. - Combine the 27 hashed key segments to a signatureFragment. A signatureFragment has (27x81=) 2187 trytes. - Depending on the selected security level you will have 1, 2 or 3 signatureFragments. - A transactionObject stores a signatureFragment in the signatureMessageFragment field. This field size is 2187 trytes. Additional transactionObjects are needed to store the remaining signatureFragments. Note: signatureMessageFragments is the same as signatureFragments. HOW A SIGNATURE IS VALIDATED To validate a signature in a transaction bundle: - Extract all corresponding signatureMessageFragments from the bundle. Depending on the selected security level you will have 1, 2 or 3 signatureMessageFragments. - The combined signatureMessageFragments is called the signature. - Extract the bundlehash from the bundle. Note: The bundleHash value is the same within the bundle. - A signature consists of 1,2 or 3 signatureMessageFragments (= signatureFragments), depending on the selected security level. - Calculate the normalizedBundleHash = normalizedBundle(bundleHash) - Convert each tryte in the normalizedBundleHash to its decimal value. - Apply for each decimal value the following calculation: K = 13 + decimal value. - Each signatureFragment segment must be hashed K times. - Combine the 27 hashed signatureFragment segments to a keyFragment. - A keyFragment has (27x81=) 2187 trytes. - Each keyFragment is hashed one time to create a digests. - Depending on the selected security level, 1, 2 or 3 digests are combined together. - The combined digests are hashed one time to create the address. - If this calculated address is the same as the address taken from the transactionObject in the bundle, than the signature is valid. CREATE AND VALIDATE SIGNATUREFRAGMENT Create signatureFragment. https://github.com/iotaledger/iota.lib.js/blob/v0.4.7/lib/crypto/signing/signing.js var signatureFragment = function(normalizedBundleFragment, keyFragment) Validate signatureFragment. https://github.com/iotaledger/iota.lib.js/blob/v0.4.7/lib/crypto/signing/signing.js var validateSignatures = function(expectedAddress, signatureFragments, bundleHash) var digest = function(normalizedBundleFragment, signatureFragment) Check out all my other IOTA tutorial videos: https://goo.gl/aNHf1y Subscribe to my YouTube channel: https://goo.gl/61NFzK The presentation used in this video tutorial can be found at: https://www.mobilefish.com/developer/iota/iota_quickguide_tutorial.html #mobilefish #howto #iota

Don't forget to smash those LIKE & SUBSCRIBE buttons :D [ALEX] In the traditional world, if you go on the New York Stock Exchange, or NASDAQ, and you look at how many securities are listed, you will find that there's actually less than 5,000 companies listed on the NASDAQ, for example. But if you look at mutual fund, and ETF's and all these other financial products that are built on top of the 5,000 products, you will find that there's about 30,000 different mutual funds, and exchanges, all kind of other ETF's, and other products, futures, options, all these other things, on top of just the same 5,000 companies. And the money that is being made on all these derivative-- all these things are called derivative products, 'cause they derive from the 5,000 underlying companies. Same thing in the crypto-community. There's an underlying set of currencies, right, or crypto-coins. Let's say the top 20, which is what we're focused on, there's going to be a whole world of financial products that derive from these 20 coins, right, the derivatives from these coins. And what Celsius does, it comes to the community and says, hey, let's all of us get together, all the coin holders get together, and we will issue these products. Instead of letting Wall Street issue these products, and extract all the value, we will issue these products on behalf of the coin-holders. All the profits from these things, which are billions of dollars, are going to go back into the coin holders. So now the coin-holder can benefit from the rise in the price of the coin, and have additional income from the derivative products that Celsius generates, on their behalf, into the financial community. So we're starting with two simple products. One is earned interest, and one is, get a loan against your crypto. But the next set of products, all the other things we're going to put inside the wallets, are all going to be things that extract value from the people that short, and the people that create puts and calls, and the people that build future contracts, and the people that build mutual funds, and the people who build ETF's, on top of these coins that you hold. So your choice is, to let Wall Street make all that money, or your choice is to join Celsius, either as an ICO contributor, or as a coin contributor into the wallet, and allow us to build that. The bigger we are, the more leverage we have on these guys. If we have a big chunk of the coins, they have to use it, they will not have a choice. And that's really the opportunity right now, early on, to establish that, and really win over the community, and then win over all of the people who want to speculate on these derivatives, to build what we trying to build.
