Australian ETF Selection (Vanguard)
Today I’m talking about Australian ETF Selection with a focus on Vanguard ETFs. I’ve only recently started investing in ETFs – actually, I only started earlier this year – and I think that ultimately ETFs will be the main part of my portfolio. So what’s an ETF? An ETF is an Exchange Traded Fund, that is, it’s an investment fund that is traded on a securities exchange market like the Australian ASX. They’re typically a diversified portfolio of securities that track a particular asset or index (although, there are actively managed ETFs as well that try to outperform the given market or index). So for example, VTS – Vanguard U.S. Total Market Shares Index ETF seeks to track the performance of the CRSP US Total Market Index, providing investors with exposure to a broadly diversified collection of securities that, in the aggregate, approximates the full index in terms of key characteristics. As we can see here, VTS is made up of 3638 holdings where the top 10 represent 17.2% of the total ETF. Companies like Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, and Facebook. So in this video, I’m going to specifically talk about which ETFs I chose and the reasons behind those decisions. First of all, I decided to buy only Vanguard ETFs. Vanguard is one of the big players and typically has low fees and a solid performance history for their index funds. I believe they were the first ones to come up with the whole idea of indexing. You can take a look for yourself at the full list of Vanguard ETFs. They include ETFs for fixed interest, property, Australian shares, international shares, and their own diversified ETFs which are made up of various proportions of the previous four categories. MY FINAL ETF PORTFOLIO 25% VAS, 25% VGS and VGAD, and 25% VAE. That covers Australia, North America, Europe and Asia. I’m planning to stick with this allocation for at least the next few years. With ETFs, you really have to. Even though they’re tradeable on the stock exchange, you’ve got to treat them like a long term investment. So if their value goes down in the short term, don’t sell them – you’d only be locking in a loss. INVESTING IN INDEX FUNDS 📈 Best Vanguard Index Funds To Invest In!
In this video we will be talking about index funds and exchange traded funds or ETF's. Here are the index funds or ETF's that I recommend investing in. I recommend investing in Vanguard index funds. Vanguard index funds have some of the lowest expense ratios in the industry. While it may not seem like a lot, high expense funds could be costing you a significant amount of money in the long run. It is important to consider the expense ratio of any fund you invest in. Mutual funds typically have a much higher expense ratio compared to index funds. Here are the Vanguard index funds I recommend! This is the ETF listing as well as the index fund listing. 1. Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF ($VTI) 2. Vanguard Total International Stock ETF ($VXUS) 3. Vanguard Total World Stock ETF ($VT) 4. Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund ($VTSAX) 5. Vanguard Total International Stock Index Fund ($VTIAX) 6. 5 Mistakes Investors Make with ETFs | Fidelity
In this video, learn about the five biggest mistakes that investors make when buying ETFs, or exchange-traded funds. To learn the basics about ETFs, visit https://www.fidelity.com/learning-center/investment-products/etf/overview. To get started investing with ETFs, visit https://www.fidelity.com/etfs/overview To see more videos from Fidelity Investments, subscribe to: https://www.youtube.com/fidelityinvestments Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/fidelityinvestments Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/fidelity Google+: https://plus.google.com/+fidelity LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/fidelity-investments --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Let’s talk about the five biggest mistakes investors can make when buying exchange-traded funds. ETFs can be good tools for investors - when used appropriately. But with any investment, there are always things to watch out for. Number 1: Buying the Hot New Thing More than 100 new ETF products launch each year, many of them chasing the latest hot trend. Cloud computing, driverless cars, 3-D printing … you name it, there’s an ETF for that. Buying into the latest hot theme might make you big returns, but take care: These product launches may come after there has been a run up in the market. Buying at the top can be painful on the way down. Number 2: Buying Something You Don’t Understand The only thing worse than chasing the hottest trend is buying something you don’t understand. ETFs have taken institutional strategies and made them push-button-easy for everyday investors to access. Want access to commodity futures? There’s an ETF for that. 300% leverage? 200% short? Interest-rate carry plays? Yes to all. But just because you can buy something easily doesn’t mean you should. All of these funds may be good tools, but only if you know how to use them correctly. Number 3: Thinking All ETFs Are Created Equal Consider China. At the start of 2014, there were more than a dozen broad-based China ETFs. For example, had you chosen PGJ, the PowerShares Golden Dragon China ETF, at the start of the year, you would have lost more than 7% of your money. Had you instead chosen ASHR, the Deutsche Xtrackers Harvest CSI 300 China A-Shares ETF, you would have earned a 51% return. Both are “China ETFs.” Both can provide big, diversified portfolios. But ASHR has significant exposure to Chinese Ashares—largely consumer-focused stocks listed and traded on the domestic Chinese market— which performed spectacularly well in 2014. Don’t assume all ETFs are created equal. Just because two ETFs cover the same market doesn’t mean they provide the same exposure or returns. There’s no guarantee which fund will perform better in the future. But if you wanted to invest last year in the growth of the Chinese consumer and the domestic investor base there, a little bit of research would have gone a long way. Number 4: Trading…Just Because You Can Trading is central to ETFs. It’s right there in the name. But just because you can trade an ETF intraday doesn’t mean you should. Emotions are often an investor’s worst enemy. You zig when you should zag; you sell at the bottom and buy at the top. We all do sometimes. The trouble is ETFs make that even easier than traditional mutual funds. ETFs’ intraday liquidity can be great when you need to get into or out of the market quickly. But those situations are rare. Number 5: Only Using Market Orders When you do invest, consider using a limit order versus a market order. Market orders are instructions to buy or sell securities at the best possible price right now. That can work well for the most liquid ETFs, but as you move beyond the top dozen ETFs, you can find yourself getting trades executed at prices you don’t really want. Using a limit order means you agree to buy an ETF at a certain price or below, and sell it at a certain price or above. A limit order puts the control back in your hands and can help you set the price on your terms. Learn from these common mistakes to help avoid making them yourself. What To Invest In | ETF or Index Funds | Investing Thursday
What To Invest In | ETF or Index Funds | Investing Thursday The difference between an ETF and an index fund is not as insignificant as it might seem. It isn't just about performance, or which type of fund has the best returns. Making the wrong choice could cost you thousands of dollars in extra fees and commissions and require hours of work on your part. The differences between them boil down to four main pillars -- fees, minimums, taxes, and liquidity -- all of which ultimately determine whether your best option is to buy an ETF or stick to an index fund. 👉Support me on Patreon https://goo.gl/ey6XWw 👉Tell People what you are doing to Debt. How I Trade on the Stock Market
**Read description for answers to frequently asked questions** the first stock market video is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwd3C2Cq9H0 As I say many times in the video, this is simply the way that I personally trade. That does not mean that it is for everyone. There are countless different approaches that one could have to the stock market, and none of them are strictly right or wrong. Don't ever follow exactly what any one person tells you when it comes to the stock market - including me! Do your research and come to your own conclusions. QUESTIONS Q. Do you day trade? A. Essentially, no. I rarely day trade. I think that since I have started trading, I have only done 2 or 3 day trades. Q. Your chart assumes that you can identify highs and lows - how is that possible? A. It's not. My chart was a very basic version of the way in which I trade - very basic. If I could re-film the video, I would put more emphasis on identifying highs and lows - the emphasis being that you can never 100% identify them. If you trade, as I showed later in my chart, sometimes you will sell and the stock will skyrocket. Or, quite often, you will buy and the stock will plummet. It happens, and of course I experience this all the time. Q. How long do you hold stocks? A. This varies greatly, and can be anywhere from 1 day to months. On average, I probably hold stocks approximately 3 days - 1 week. Q. So, you are making this video to advise people to start trading? A. No. Absolutely not. I would be more likely to encourage people NOT to trade on the stock market than I would be to do vice versa. Q. So, you trade off your base of $10k, and live off of that? A. No. $10k is what I started with in my account two years ago. It is not what is in my account now. Q. Can you give me advice on...? A. No. Although I would love to help everyone, I am not the best means of advice for you. I am not trying to give anyone advice here - I am simply sharing a bit of insight into what my job as a stock trader looks like. I am not a licensed financial advisor, and I would not ever presume to give anyone financial advice. Please do your research and be careful! Q. You don't seem like a professional trader...? A. I am not really concerned with how professional I "seem." I am making a living, and that is the most important thing to me. I did not go to school for this, or ever take any classes on the stock market. I did my own research and taught myself all that I know about the market. I am not worried about seeming professional - I am only concerned about making money on the stock market. Q. Can you give us proof / screenshot your personal account info / banking info so that I believe you? A. No. If you do not "believe me," please don't expect me to care. Q. I want to make some quick cash. Should I invest in the stock market? A. No. Absolutely not. Q. Can you film yourself actually trading on the market? A. No - for various reasons. One, if you are imagining that my actual trading will be anywhere near as engaging as that not-very-exciting chart, you are mistaken. Perhaps if I was day trading, this would not be the case, but when I buy a stock, I simply click a button the says "buy." That's it... And then I wait for days, weeks, perhaps months. There is nothing thrilling to see here. Also, it would be a bother to block out all of my account numbers and all that. Sorry. SOCIALS Instagram - travellight21 Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/travellight21/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/Travellight_ http://travellight.me Why do I trade on TD Ameritrade? - They have strong research reports - They have great trading tools, such as Thinkorswim - They have a great mobile app that allows me to trade on the go - They have amazing customer service - There are no hidden fees, such as maintaining a minimum balance I explained this in the original cut of my video, but it was just getting too long! **And no, I am not sponsored in any way by TD Ameritrade, I just like their trading platform and wanted to give you guys an explanation of why that is. A lot of people also highly recommend Scottrade, which has lower fees than Ameritrade. Whatever works for you!** DISCLAIMER This video is for entertainment purposes only. The full transcript and more information can be found on the article (https://financiallyfrugal.com.au/how-to-buy-etfs/) and be sure to check out the rest of the articles on https://financiallyfrugal.com.au. Dividend Investing: Pros and Cons of Investing in Dividend Stocks! 💵📈
Dividend Investing: Pros and Cons of Investing in Dividend Stocks! (Should I invest in dividend paying stocks) Investing in dividends is becoming more and more popular. Dividends provide passive income to investors and provides and immediate return on investment. However, before deciding on a dividend investing strategy it is important to understand the pros and cons of investing in dividend paying stock and dividend paying companies. Video Outline and Time Stamps so you can quickly jump to any topic: • Con#1 - 00:50 • Con#2 - 1:35 • Con#3 - 2:15 • Pro#1 - 3:19 • Pro#2 - 3:36 • Pro#3 - 4:38 • Pro#4 - 5:19 Con#1 • Dividends payments are not guaranteed – If a company begins to experience financial hardship the dividend payment may be reduced or suspended for an un-ascertainable period of time. Ford, General Electric and PG&E are examples of companies that have had to reduce or suspend their dividend payments. Diversification is very important when it comes to dividend investing. Con#2 •Dividends are taxable – (With the exception of a Roth IRA) dividends are taxable as income when received, and taxes can easily eat away at investor’s rate of return over time. Growth and small-cap stocks normally do not pay dividends. The growth received on the investment is not taxable until sold so the growth compounds tax free and thus can be considered a large advantage over dividend paying stocks. Con#3 •Slow growth or limited return on investment - Dividend paying companies may provide little to no capital appreciation on the underlying investment so your upside potential is usually limited. Companies that are able to pay dividends are usually established companies that have been around for decades. This means an investor may be missing out on the potential capital appreciation upside of newer companies. Sure it’s great to receive dividend payments based on a 3 – 4% annual yield, but if we are forgoing higher rates of return elsewhere our net worth may grow at a much slower pace. Pro#1 •Immediate return on investment – As a dividend investor you will immediately start receiving dividend payments (usually on a monthly or quarterly basis). Watching real money being deposited into your account that you didn’t have to work for is an amazing feeling. It is truly passive income. Pro#2 •Dividend income has tax advantages – Although we normally think of paying taxes as a bad thing the good news is that dividends are taxed at the more favorable capital gain rates if you receive “qualified dividend payments.” Capital gain rates range between 0 – 24%. A much more favorable rate than ordinary income rates. Next to tax-exempt income it is the next most favorable income for tax purposes Pro#3 •Companies can increase their dividend payments - Profitable companies frequently increase dividends. As earnings increase, companies use dividends as one way to return value to their shareholder. Chevron and Proctor and Gamble are two companies are great examples of companies that have raised their dividend payments to shareholders overtime. I love when I income goes up and I do absolutely do nothing! Pro# 4 •Less worry and less time involved – Companies that pay dividends are typically well established and usually have reduced volatility. This makes me feel at ease, because I know I’m investing in solid brand name companies such as McDonalds or Chevron or Kimberly Clark. I also find myself spending less time researching these companies, because I’m not entirely focused on capital appreciation. I know I’m going to receive a payout either way. What to know about investing in marijuana stocks!?
What to know about investing in marijuana stocks Every Marijuana stock currently is trading on news and hype so if you don’t have the stomach to potentially see a ton of red in your stock portfolios then this industry isn’t for you right now. The push for legalization of marijuana took a massive leap forward this year when the Vermont legislature legalized recreational use of marijuana, and the governor signed the bill into law. lawmakers could just pass a bill, the legalization process would move much faster than statewide ballot initiatives. In January, just as the Vermont House of Representatives was voting to legalize marijuana possession, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced a federal crackdown that included the removal of long-standing federal protections that allowed states to set their own marijuana policies. Probably will prolong the process to make marijuana legal in all states. Fears of anti-marijuana policies out of the White House abated in June, as President Trump seemed to contradict this hardline stance by claiming he’d support legislation that allowed states to decriminalize pot. But after news this week of a rather harsh proposal that reportedly would prohibit Canadians who invest in marijuana stocks from even crossing the border into the U.S., some marijuana stocks have tumbled. However, some that were hit hard in Thursday’s after-hours trading had more than reversed those losses in Friday morning trade. This type of volatility would scare off low-risk investors. But for tactical traders who are happy to take on bigger risks in the pursuit of bigger rewards, this uncertainty could create big opportunities But some had huge percentage gains in recent time such as Tilray What are the marijuana stocks to watch? there are no blue-chip marijuana stocks. The industry is young, many pure-play cannabis companies are private and many that trade publicly are only available in the OTC market on thin volume. few big names -- Aurora Cannabis ACBFF, +2.27% Canopy Growth Corp. CGC, +7.08% and Aphria Inc. APHQF, +12.76% Not only are these individual picks important to watch, they are also the most investible with market capitalization between $3 billion and $9 billion and all trading more than 1 million shares daily each. Aurora and Aphria are listed on the pink sheets, but Canopy Growth is an NYSE stock. with five-year returns that are north of 1,000% for each. This year, however, it’s not quite as simple as just chasing a popular marijuana play; year-to-date, Aphria and Aurora are both down significantly. Canopy has done better, with year-to-date returns of about 60% since Jan. 1. But it’s not alone. Just this week recently-minted marijuana play Tilray exploded higher on a deal to ship marijuana to Germany. That helped send the Nasdaq stock to a 400% gain in a few months since its July IPO. This is clearly an event-driven space, and headlines like that are what traders are hoping for. After all, the vast majority of marijuana names — including Tilray — are still deeply unprofitable and simply offer the promise of growth. there are a number of publicly traded cannabis-related stocks that provide investment opportunity if you’re up for it or can give you a sense of the industry if you’re just a curious onlooker. Constellation Brands STZ, -1.29% announced a $4 billion investment in Canopy Growth last month, causing the pot stock to nearly double as a result. There is also stocks like Scotts Miracle-Gro CompanySMG, -1.21% both Constellation Brands and Scotts Miracle-Gro stocks are in the red year-to-date and don’t quite offer the same appeal as direct plays on marijuana. But for those who want to just dip a toe into the pot industry, the names are worth following. to watch is the Horizons Marijuana Life Sciences Index ETF HMMJ, +3.76% , traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange and which boasts roughly $1 billion in total assets and holds about 40 related stocks. However, the fund’s website warns that “at no time may nonresidents of Canada be the beneficial owners of a majority of the Units of any one of our ETFs.SPX

Before You Buy a Weed Stock - The Problems With Marijuana Companies
Before you buy a weed stock, or tell someone else to do so, make sure you understand these fundamental risks... Richard is NOT a financial adviser, and the points expressed in this video are Richard's opinion. Richard does not have any position in marijuana stocks. Other concerns: -Some marijuana companies have been issuing shares at a rapid pace, increasing the risk of dilution for current shareholders. -Companies acquiring their competitors face a lot of execution risk as they integrate their targets. Plants may need to shut down, employees may need to retrain, and systems may need to be updated. Any problems along the way could impact the benefit these acquisitions provide the firm. -If provinces adopt a government-backed outlet system for selling marijuana similar to alcohol, marijuana companies could face price pressure. The outlets would have significant buying power, allowing them to demand discounts on bulk orders. -As many of these companies are only a few years old, their accounting statements and disclosures are not of the same level of quality as more established firms. This means less information for investors looking to own the company. - The barriers to producing marijuana are likely to fall over time. This will open the door to competitors, including large pharma companies. If a international pharmaceutical company were to open a medical marijuana operation, startups would have a hard time matching their capital commitments.
