Cockpit Country - Voices from Jamaica's Heart
"Cockpit Country - Voices from Jamaica's Heart" In 2006, the then Government of Jamaica permitted two prospecting licenses for mining in the Cockpit Country, the interior Western section of the island of Jamaica. Cockpit Country is one of two remaining areas in Jamaica with significant areas of healthy forests. It is the source of water for five parishes, a sanctuary for endemic, rare and endangered species, the home of the Western Maroons and a place of important cultural and historical significance for Jamaicans. A coalition called the Cockpit Country Stakeholders Group (CCSG) was formed to fight against mining in Cockpit Country, and as part of this effort the film "Cockpit Country - Voices from Jamaica's Heart" was made. "Voices" is a 24 minute documentary featuring a cross section of residents who live in Cockpit Country. The film describes the unique natural, historical, cultural and social aspects of the region, presents the negative effects of bauxite mining in other parts of Jamaica, and expresses the desires of Cockpit Country residents to see their home preserved without the impacts of mining. "Voices" is a 2007 co-production of Vagabond Media and Jamaica Environment Trust, it aired on Jamaican television and was shown through-out Cockpit Country at community venues. Following the public outcry and a suspension of the licenses by the Minister of Agriculture, one of the prospecting licenses was surrendered, while another remains in effect for the western region of Cockpit Country, including the town and environs of Accompong. In March 2013, the CCSG learned that a boundary study of Cockpit Country, commissioned by the Government of Jamaica, and conducted by the University of the West Indies, was about to be the subject of public consultation. This is an important step in the protection of Cockpit Country, as a boundary has never been declared. Vagabond Media, the Jamaica Environment Trust and the CCSG continue to work together for the protection of this unique Jamaican place and all who live there. Soon after this, in , Karl Joseph Bayer described what is now known as the Bayer Process, which led to a dramatic reduction in the cost of aluminum metal. Today, it is an everydaymodity, rather than a precious metal. The Bayer Process, which continues to be the most economical method of manufacturing alumina can be schematically summarised in a flow chart, Although deposits of aluminous red earth have been known to occur in the Tertiary Limestone areas (which covers two thirds of the land surface of Jamaica) since the 's, it was not until the 's that their economic significance as an ore of aluminum was recognised. MINING AND MINING RESOURCES Although there had been attempts for over a century to establish small-scale mining in Jamaica, the present well-established mineral industry of Jamaica only dates back to when the export of kiln dried metallurgical bauxite ore was started. This was shortly followed by the export of alumina. The birth of this new industry was the result of a successful exploration and development programme. It was somewhat unusual in that this development occurred in areas near to well-established population centres with such infrastructure facilities as roads, railways and harbours. All these, of course, had to be vastly improved to service the new industry. Jamaica's mineral industry is mainly based on bauxite but it also includ

It has the symbol Al, and its atomic number is 13. It is not soluble in water under normal circumstances. Aluminium is the third most abundant element (after oxygen and silicon), and the most abundant metal, in the Earth's crust. It makes up about 8% by weight of the Earth's solid surface. Aluminium metal is too reactive chemically to occur natively. Instead, it is found combined in over 270 different minerals. The chief ore of aluminium is bauxite. Aluminium is remarkable for the metal's low density and for its ability to resist corrosion due to the phenomenon of passivation. Structural components made from aluminium and its alloys are vital to the aerospace industry and are important in other areas of transportation and structural materials. The most useful compounds of aluminium, at least on a weight basis, are the oxides and sulfates... Physical Aluminium is a soft, durable, lightweight, ductile and malleable metal with appearance ranging from silvery to dull gray, depending on the surface roughness. Aluminium is nonmagnetic and does not easily ignite. A fresh film of aluminium film serves as a good reflector (approximately 92%) of visible light and an excellent reflector (as much as 98%) of medium and far infrared radiation. The yield strength of pure aluminium is 7--11 MPa, while aluminium alloys have yield strengths ranging from 200 MPa to 600 MPa. Aluminium has about one-third the density and stiffness of steel. It is easily machined, cast, drawn and extruded. Corrosion resistance can be excellent due to a thin surface layer of aluminium oxide that forms when the metal is exposed to air, effectively preventing further oxidation. The strongest aluminium alloys are less corrosion resistant due to galvanic reactions with alloyed copper. This corrosion resistance is also often greatly reduced when many aqueous salts are present, particularly in the presence of dissimilar metals... Aluminium mirror finish has the highest reflectance of any metal in the 200--400 nm (UV) and the 3,000--10,000 nm (far IR) regions; in the 400--700 nm visible range it is slightly outperformed by tin and silver and in the 700--3000 (near IR) by silver, gold, and copper. Aluminium is a good thermal and electrical conductor, having 59% the conductivity of copper, both thermal and electrical... Aluminium forms strong chemical bonds with oxygen. Compared to most other metals, it is difficult to extract from ore, such as bauxite, due to the energy required to reduce aluminium oxide (Al2O3)... Aluminium electrolysis with the Hall-Héroult process consumes a lot of energy, but alternative processes were always found to be less viable economically and/or ecologically... In 2005, the People's Republic of China was the top producer of aluminium with almost a one-fifth world share, followed by Russia, Canada, and the USA, reports the British Geological Survey... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reynolds... Pahang To Cease Bauxite Mining If Pollution Persists
Pahang To Cease Bauxite Mining If Pollution Persists Pahang government will not hesitate to stop bauxite and ire ore-mining activities in the state if no solution is found to address pollution along the roads leading to Kuantan Port and Gebeng industrial area. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob said the state government viewed the matter seriously as it is not only affected local residents, but also the state’s tourism industry. He was referring to complaints by a group of tourists from China who arrived on a vessel, Beibu Wan Zhi Xing, at Kuantan Port on the dirty condition of the port. Early this month, the state government had met with 106 bauxite and ire ore operators in a move to resolve the pollution problem due to their mining activities. Following the issue, several measures were taken including not allowing lorries transporting the ore to use normal roads, except Jalan Gebeng-Bypass, to the port. The operators were also given two months to clear seven areas used to store bauxite, and the state government had allocated a new area, covering 242 hectares, in Gebeng for the purpose.

Red Mud Disposal Solution - 1 MVA Demonstration Project Aluminum of Greece 2012-2014
http://www.amrtlimited.com AMRT “ Red Mud Disposal problem Solved from making Aluminum by Advanced Mineral Recovery Technologies” (AMRT Ltd) is a pyro-metallurgical process technology company specializing in processing electric arc furnace dusts, mineral fines as well as primary ore concentrates. We can also re-process secondary mining products such as slag dumps, slimes dams and process waste streams. Utilizing our unique process methodology (patented and licensed) together with our robust open arc AC electric furnaces we offer turnkey process solutions to adding value to a wide range of source materials. Our process has a high degree of success with highly efficient recoveries, capable of producing LME-grade products. AMRT in collaboration with its licensor “AMRT” have developed an AC open arc melt reduction furnace, as well as a unique thermodynamically-based mathematical model and process methodology. This combination of technology, hardware and process skills converts environmental problematic materials, primary ores and waste streams into commercially saleable products. Unlike much larger conventional furnaces, we do not need to agglomerate or pelletize the feed material – the finer the better! We operate on a batch process so production problems can be easily identified and rectified. The furnace is small (up to 5.0 MVA), robust and energy efficient. A mobile version (1.25 MVA) is available for deployment in rural and remote areas. The EU funded ENEXAL project The European Commission has funded a research programme entitled Novel technology for enhanced energy and exergy efficiencies in primary aluminium production industry (‘ENEXAL’ for short). A core aspect of this programme has been the application of the AMRT Process to treating bauxite residue – the primary waste from processing bauxite into alumina, which is produced in enormous volume around the world each year. The project will seek to prove that bauxite residue can be treated within an AMRT Process furnace to produce iron and an environmentally-inert slag that can be further processed into mineral wool for insulation. 'Unprecedented' corrosive chemical leak at Vietnam alumina refinery.
The latest in a series of environmental fallouts has hit the Central Highlands. Workers at the Nhan Co alumina plant in Vietnam’s Central Highland province of Dak Nong last week discovered a broken pipeline containing the corrosive chemical sodium hydroxide. Some 9.6 cubic meters of sodium hydroxide has leaked from the plant, posing serious environmental threats to nearby residents. Sodium hydroxide is used at high temperatures to wash aluminum ore, also known as bauxite. Alumina is a white powder made from bauxite ore for producing aluminium. It sits between bauxite and aluminum in the light metal's production process chain. The leaked chemical has reportedly penetrated an area of 600 square meters, and some of it has been flowing into a stream, state media reported. The incident occurred on July 23 when a pipeline burst as the sodium hydroxide was being pumped to the production area.

ABN Newswire Video Report March 2, 2011: Queensland Bauxite (ASX:QBL)
Queensland Bauxite Limited (ASX:QBL) announced that Queensland Department of Mines and Energy has accepted the Company's applications for an additional eight exploration licenses within the East Australian Bauxite Province. QBL will now hold 32 exploration licenses in Queensland for a combined bauxite prospective landholding of over 7,180km2, a 31% increase in the previously announced 5,466km2 landholding. The Company intends to conduct studies to determine the extent of gibbsite mineralisation over these new tenements. Neon Energy Limited (ASX:NEN) said that the farm-out assignments to Kris Energy Limited in Block 120 and Block 105 are approved by the Vietnamese Prime Minister. Block 105 is estimated to have the potential to contain several trillion cubic feet of gas and Block 120 is estimated to have a combined prospective resource in excess of a billion barrels of oil. Exploration drilling on Block 120 is planned in Q2 2011 and Block 105 in early 2012. AusNiCo Limited (ASX:ANW) announced further shallow, high grade gold-copper and nickel intersections over 1% nickel at its Pembroke Prospect in Queensland. Pembroke forms a small anomalous area on the southern side of the extensive 4 square km Mt Cobalt target, which is characterised by extensive soil anomalies over 4,000ppm nickel and 500ppm cobalt. Metallurgical tests has commenced to determine nickel content and drilling is continuing at Pembroke to the east. Havilah Resources Limited (ASX:HAV) said today that recent drilling at the Maldorky iron ore project has considerably expanded the area of potentially economic iron ore. Drilling intersected up to 139m thickness of ore. Data suggested that the geometry of the iron formation is exceptionally favourable for a low cost open pit mining operation.
