Gold Mining On The Yuba River

09:20
Gold Mining On The Yuba River The Ancient American River, Ancient Yuba River, Ancient Calaveras River, Ancient Mokelumne River, Ancient Tuolumne River, Ancient Magalia Channel, Ancient Intervolcanic Cateract Channel, Ancient Intervolcanic American River and the Ancient Jura River (from the Jurassic Period), are plotted in detail on Big Tens California Gold Map 5. The present-day rivers bearing the same names as their ancient rivers are also shown. The Ancient Rivers of Gold in northern California are from the Tertiary Period. The Tertiary rivers existed millions of years ago and many of them had large quantities of gold within their gravels. Because of that, they are known as the "Ancient Rivers of Gold." Each ancient river is discussed below. Information on this page is based on the classic work of Waldemar Lindgren of the United States Geological Survey and by study of Big Tens California Gold Map 5, which shows the relationship of the ancient rivers to landmarks, such as roads, creeks and towns in the region. These now-dry Tertiary rivers are thought to be a prime source of the gold found in many of the rivers and streams of the Mother Lode region of northern California. The ancient rivers are discontinuous and sometimes follow tortuous routes. They have been altered by volcanic activity, erosion, and in some instances portions of the rivers have been covered by lava. Much of the region underwent extreme volcanic eruptions. Volcanic flows have been found up to 4,000 feet deep. Volcanic flows were up to 60 miles in length. Portions of an ancient river may be found at ground level or near the top of a mountain, or on the side of a mountain, or buried. Early prospectors found portions of the ancient rivers and worked them for their rich gold content. Later, mining companies used hydraulic mining or drift mining techniques to recover the gold. In hydraulic mining, water under pressure is directed to, for example, the side of a ravine to dislodge the gravels and send the material to the sluices where the gold is recovered. The equipment that was used (called a "monitor" or "giant") was similar to a very large hose nozzle. Geologic reports speak of gravel deposits up to 250 feet deep with gold deposits interspersed at various levels within the gravels. Some of the gravels of the ancient rivers of gold have been cemented together over time. Smaller materials between the larger gravels have bound the larger gravels together. Drift mining is used in those instances to follow the channel underneath the volcanic covering. In drift mining, tunnels are driven in bedrock underneath the channels and when the channels are reached, the richest stratum, resting immediately on the bedrock, is extracted by underground mining methods and then washed at the mouth of the tunnel. Many miles of the ancient rivers are still un-worked and may be very rich in gold.

The battle over mining for gold in Marmato

14:00
The town of Marmato, in Central Colombia, sits on top a mountain of gold. Its people have been living off of it for centuries, mining the precious metal through mostly small scale, artisanal operations. But as the country is increasingly relying on its mineral resources to fuel the economy, multinational mining companies have set their sights on places like Marmato to install open air mines that would literally swallow the landscape. According to some estimates, it would take about 20 years to extract all the gold from the mountain, wiping out the town and its 10,000 inhabitants in the process. The imminence of this news weighs heavily on the people of Marmato, who are organizing to fight back and prevent this from happening. Correspondent Toby Muse traveled to the Colombian Andes Mountains to report on this story for Americas Now. LOTS OF GOLD (!!!!) recovered from sluice/placer black sand tailings left by miners

02:43
We had a customer bring down some black sand tailings from a placer operation he had access to. He said the miners had removed all the gold the could from the black sands and these were the tailings left over after they were finished. The 30 lbs of material he ran had between 1-2 grams of gold! I was amazing to see how much more gold was recovered by our shaker table from "tailings". This was some very rich material and unlike hardrock ore this stuff is just sitting there in piles ready to be dug up and put on a shaker table, no need to mine it or blast it or crush it. If you have black sand tailings from old placer operations please send us a sample and see if we can recover any more gold from your material. What is BORAX METHOD? What does BORAX METHOD mean? BORAX METHOD meaning & explanation

02:22
What is BORAX METHOD? What does BORAX METHOD mean? BORAX METHOD meaning - BORAX METHOD definition - BORAX METHOD explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ The borax method is a technique of artisanal gold mining, which uses borax as a flux to purify gold concentrates. By using borax, no mercury flour is produced, hence gold recovery increases. The borax method of gold extraction has been used by artisanal gold miners in the Benguet area north of Manila in the Philippines for more than 30 years. Some believe it was in practice as early as the 1900s. The method is increasingly being seen as a safe alternative to the widespread use of toxic mercury in artisanal gold mining today. About 30% of the world's mercury emissions comes from small scale mining. Efforts are being made to revive the method and spread its use. As of 2012, around 15,000 artisanal gold miners in a small area of Luzon, the main island in the northern portion of the Philippines, use this method exclusively. The mineral is inexpensive and easily available, and the miners have reportedly found that more gold is recovered through its use. In contrast to the use of mercury (which relies on amalgamation of the impurities) this method relies on borax's ability to lower all the minerals' melting points, including that of gold. Since the gold is usually the heaviest of these minerals, it allows for concentrating the gold on the bottom of the crucible. The process requires considerably less heat than conventional refining methods, which can be obtainable even in remote locations (using charcoal). After the ore is crushed into a fine powder, it's lightly panned to leave only the heaviest minerals in the pan. It's then thoroughly mixed by three times (by volume) as much of borax and a few drops of water. This mixture is then heated until the whole mixture is molten, after which molten droplets of gold collect on the bottom of the crucible.

How to mine gold and live to tell about it

03:08
As of 2011, Colombia was the largest per capita mercury polluter in the world. One of the major sources of mercury pollution is from artisanal and small-scale gold mining, due to the mercury used to extract the gold from other products in a process called whole ore amalgamation. Mercury from burning of the gold-amalgam is a major contributor of mercury air pollution; these mercury byproducts also contribute to water pollution via settling into the water and dumping directly into the water from in-situ amalgamation. One source of mercury poisoning in humans is via ingestion of methylMercury from fish, which results from microorganisms in the water converting mercury to methylMercury. MethylMercury can reach dangerous levels in the local population who consume fish as a primary staple in their diet. Mercury poisoning causes serious health effects: birth defects, neurological damage, and autoimmune disorders. We aim to reduce all the mercury exposures by eventually moving to mercury-free gold production techniques. One way is to improve concentration by using sluices, centrifuges, shaking tables, and magnets, that help separate the gold from other products. Another way is gravity only techniques such as panning, direct smelting, or chemical leaching. These processes are actually more effective at yielding higher amounts of gold than whole ore amalgamation, but miners lack education about effective methods and toxic effects of mercury use. In contrast to Fancy Pants Gold Mining, most (63%) of Colombia’s gold mining is done illegally which makes it very difficult to regulate.

Learn how to gold pan with the Batea gold pan. A gold pan used by developing countries all over the world. This type of gold pan is used by artisanal miners everywhere. Some people swear it is a much better pan than the style we commonly use in the westernized countries. In this video I try gold panning for the first time using this gold panning technique. This is my Thompson river claim in beautiful British Columbia. I find gold with this pan, but finding gold on the Thompson river is easy as it is everywhere. This video is produced by Dan Hurd, Prospector, Miner, Teacher and YouTuber, as part of his YouTube channel based on educational videos about gold mining, gold panning, prospecting, rock hounding, and mineral collecting. Artisanal Gold Mining Mali

04:20
PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE COMMENTING: The people mining this gold are local people who own the right to the gold through ancestral domain. In other words, they are not working for dirt under exploitative conditions. These are farmers who mine gold and fish between harvest and planting seasons. It is the only way some of them have to earn cash. They keep all the gold they find and sell it themselves at the fair market rate. They are not getting ripped off, and they are not being poisoned by mercury. Yes, there are mines in the hills near this location wher people are exploited and work under very dangerous conditions. I visited one of the bad mines and was not welcome, which is very strange anywhere in Mali. Anyway, these people are doing it voluntarily and receive full value for their take. This is: People panning for gold using traditional techniques on the Niger River, Mali, West Africa. They seem to get about one or two US dollars-worth in an afternoon when sold at local market (probably a lot more than that now). There are few other ways to earn cash there. Plus, this is during the hottest time of year and working in the river isn't so bad... Check out my book about traditional fishing and hunting in Mali: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00H7XPCI8

Reducing Mercury Pollution in Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining (ASGM)

03:02
Mercury pollution in artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) is widespread throughout the Philippines. Amalgamation, or the use of mercury in gold recovery, is the most popular method used by small-scale miners in extracting gold. In 2008, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) estimated that 400 tons of mercury is released annually and ASGM is known to be one of the largest emitters of mercury in the country. Mercury, once released, persists in the environment. It circulates and gets absorbed by various organisms, impacting biodiversity and poisoning rivers and fish. It is transformed to methyl mercury and spreads its way to the food chain. Mercury is also bioaccumulative. Once it enters the human body, mercury slowly poisons it and causes major health problems such as neurological damage, respiratory problems, musculoskeletal illnesses and worst, death. Unfortunately, women and developing foetuses, infants and children are more susceptible to the effects of mercury, thus, affecting their neurological development. BAN Toxics, with funding support from Dialogos, UNIDO, Global Environment Fund (GEF), Swedish Society for Nature Conservation, US Department of State (USDOS), the Takagi Foundation, and Foundation for the Philippine Environment (FPE), is undertaking a program entitled “Eliminating Mercury Pollution in Small-Scale Gold Mining.” The program is implemented in seven major small-scale gold mining areas in the Philippines in the Municipality of Balbalan and Pasil in Kalinga; Province of Romblon; Mt. Diwalwal in the Province of Compostela Valley; T’boli Mining Area in the Province of South Cotabato; Jose Panganiban and Labo in the Province of Camarines Norte.

Black Lives Matter – Exposing the Dangers of Artisanal Gold Mining in Mali

Crowd Funding to End Child Slavery and Educate as to the Dangers of ‘Bling’ → http://news.massmediaseo.com/black-lives-matter-exposing-the-dangers-of-artisanal-gold-mining-in-mali/ → http://www.massmediaseo.com/staff/login Human Rights Watch has recently announced that 20,000 – 40,000 children are used as slave laborers in the artisanal gold mines of Mali. Repetitive injuries to the neck and spinal cord from lifting heavy loads in confined spaces and heavy exposure to toxic substances such as mercury often lead to early death. Many of the children have never attended school and receive little MONEY for the labor they endure, while young girls are often sexually exploited. Under international law, the government of Mali is required to protect these children from economic exploitation, trafficking and abuse. There is no evidence of these protections as the Malian government is one of the primary beneficiaries of artisanal mining. Film maker Moctar Menta, and producer of the independent film Gold of Dangers, perilously penetrated these child-slave communities and covertly obtained footage documenting the lives of these children. However because of the difficulty of concealing audio and video equipment, the footage he was able to gather was highly limited. Much to the chagrin of the Malian government, Mr. Menta has recently announced that he intends to return to the mines and expose the human rights abuses that these children endure daily in an effort bring awareness to the issue of modern day child slave labor. Gold accounts for 75% of all Malian exports and due to an unstable Euro, the demand is increasing as more child laborers arrive daily. Human Rights Watch has pleaded with the Malian government to “immediately take steps to end the use of mercury by child laborers”. It seems their pleas have fallen on deaf ears as conditions have only worsened in the more than 350 mining sites across Mali. Lack of access to education is one of the causes of child labor and artisanal mining. The net enrollment rate was 60.6% and only 56.3% of children completed primary school. Many children are born into these remote mining communities where there is no school infrastructure, these children have never seen a world outside of Mali’s dark and dirty mining industry. The communities that do offer access to education are expected to perform their labor in the mines as well as their scholastic responsibilities; most eventually abandon the schools as the exhaustion of a 10 hour day consumes a 10 year old body. In fact the ancient Greeks believe that gold was a combination of water and sunlight because it was found in rivers. Place of mining, it involved swirling water in circles in shallow metal pans with soil from the riverbed leaving gold as it was washed away. Back in 1200 BC , enterprising early miners would also use water power to propel gold bearing sand over the hind of a sheep, which would trap the tiny but heavy flakes of gold. When the fleece said it absorbed all the water it could, the Golden Fleece would then be hung up to dry and beaten until all the gold had fallen off. Hence, the legend of the Golden Fleece. A number of early civilizations, including Chile and Mexico, used a variation of this technique called winnowing, in which soil was bounced on woolen blankets, allowing the wind to blow by the light sand and thus freeing the gold.

SURINAM: MERCURY POLLUTION THREAT FROM GOLD MINING

02:57
Eng/Portu/Nat A shadow hangs over hundreds of villages in Surinam, a small South American country bordering Brazil. The artisanal gold miners use mercury to separate gold from gravel. They wash the mercury away into river-water, and burn it off into the air. The mercury is a poison. It can cause long-term illness, including brain damage. It can harm unborn babies. Yet these practices are common among the thirty thousand artisanal gold miners in Surinam. The miners have no choice as the country's economic crisis bites, they're fighting to survive. There's no other work, and you can't farm the soil so they have to risk their lives. SOUNDBITE(English) "It's very hard work, you have to struggle. In the pit, they don't need boys there, they need me. And you have to be very strong." SUPERCAPTION: Danny Pryor - Surinamese miner Mercury is the danger, gold is their hope. SOUNDBITE(Portuguese) "Mining more or less like a game, you lose and you win. You lose and you win. Many people have been very lucky. But not us." SUPERCAPTION: Vitorino Brito - Brazilian miner The Surinam government need the revenue from gold. But, they are also concerned about the pollution. So they've asked in a team of experts and from UNIDO - the United Nations Industrial Development Organization and they've already come up with a surprising solution to the mercury pollution. SOUNDBITE(English) "The people are the most important. The small gold miners are for Surinam very important. They bring our economy a little bit higher. And that's what we need. SUPERCAPTION: Ellen Naarendorp - Chairman National Council It's cost effective, easy to use and safe. Created by Brandon Nichols, UBC Mining Engineering student Submitted video description: My research focuses on helping artisanal miners reduce the amount of mercury used to extract gold from ores. I specifically focus on their perceptions regarding the interaction of mercury and gold and their misconception that mercury is non-toxic. The goal of my work is to educate and empower miners in the use of less toxic chemicals while drastically increasing the quantity of gold extracted. This would reduce the levels of harmful chemicals released into the environment, improve the economic circumstances of miners and create healthier artisanal mining communities globally.
