Glenn Wadstein mined Sterling Creek Mine from 1986-2001 and found pounds and pounds of gold. He built his own equipment and treated the job as a sand and gravel operation. Here's the equipment he built, the way he moved overburden to reveal the ore and how he processed the ore to filter out the gold. Wadstein took this video in 1986 at the outset of the mining operation, edited it into a clear and descriptive narrative and then converted the video to digital format in 2017. Wadstein narrated the video on October 22, 2017 at the Ashland Literary Arts Festival held Hannon Library, Southern Oregon University. Underground miners in outback Western Australia have unearthed rare gold specimens which geologists are calling a "once-in-a-lifetime discovery". Workers at the Beta Hunt mine near the small town of Kambalda, 630 kilometres east of Perth, have brought more than $15 million worth of gold specimens to the surface in just four days. The gold-encrusted rocks were found about 500 metres below the surface in an area just three metres wide and three metres high. We’re at the end of this series now... If you’ve made it through all five of these videos, I thank you for watching and I’m going to assume that you saw why we enjoyed this abandoned mine so much. With some mines, there is a feeling of relief to get outside again into the open skies and fresh air. However, I actually find myself reluctant to leave mines such as this one or the Buca della Vena Mine in Italy. Sure, we’re usually tired after a day of scrambling through the different levels, but they are really fun to explore and after seeing so many amazing things, one is reluctant to leave the party early. As you probably gathered, this is not the last level in this mine, but this is as far as we could go on this trip. There was no way we could have gotten up those soggy, rotten ladders running up the side of that shaft or winze (I still don’t know if that was a winze or a capped shaft). You saw how many rungs were missing and by the point we arrived, those ladders were essentially mush. Speaking of rotten things… How did you like that false floor hanging out over that huge open space? I thought it was pretty cool to be able to look back on that and to see what the platform looked like underneath. It isn’t often that one is able to get a perspective like that. And I’m glad I didn’t go out on it because that would not have been a pleasant ride! I’m also glad we were able to gain additional views down into the huge cave as well. I don’t know if you noticed or not, but at one of those openings I showed down into the cave, you could see ore cart rail jutting out a little bit into the opening. That was one of the points where the miners were dumping the waste rock into the cave. As great as it was to see more of the enormous cave, I think my favorite thing on this upper level was that sign displaying the “Mine Hoist Signal Code.” It is very rare to find intact signs like that. First of all, not many mines are big enough to even have one in the first place. Secondly, the wet or flooded mines will soon cause a sign like that to rot away to nothing. And, lastly, although they might be preserved in the dry, desert mines, those are some of the first mine relics to disappear into the backpacks of “collectors.” So, it is a treat to see one still in place where it belongs. It took us a full day to explore the section of this mine that you saw in this series of five videos, but that is far from the whole mine. I’ve spoken with an individual that knows this mine very well and has seen far more of it than we have. According to him (which is supported by the maps I have seen), we saw only approximately 20% of this abandoned mine in this series. Imagine a series of 25-30 videos that it would have taken to cover this one mine! We haven’t been in many mines that are that big… Really, there aren’t many mines that ARE that big. I haven’t posted them yet, but I actually still have two mine series to publish that are also of enormous mines like this. I think you’ll like those... ***** All of these videos are uploaded in HD, so adjust those settings to ramp up the quality! It really does make a difference. You can see the gear that I use for mine exploring here: https://bit.ly/2wqcBDD You can click here for my full playlist of abandoned mines: https://goo.gl/TEKq9L Thanks for watching! ***** Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them – nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well. These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that colorful niche of our history is gone forever. But, you know what? We enjoy doing it! This is exploring history firsthand – bushwhacking down steep canyons and over rough mountains, figuring out the techniques the miners used and the equipment they worked with, seeing the innovations they came up with, discovering lost mines that no one has been in for a century, wandering through ghost towns where the only sound is the wind... These journeys allow a feeling of connection to a time when the world was a very different place. And I’d love to think that in some small way we are paying tribute to those hardy miners that worked these mines before we were even born. So, yes, in short, we are adit addicts… I hope you’ll join us on these adventures! #ExploringAbandonedMines #MineExploring #AbandonedMines #UndergroundMineExploring

In the 1970s, South Africa was the world's most prolific exporter of gold. Over the years, industrial decline has seen widespread closures of the mines across the country. However, Johannesburg sits on the biggest gold basin ever discovered. It's perhaps not surprising that many of these abandoned mines have seen a recent boom in illegal mining activity. Everyday, hundreds of illegal gold miners, known as Zama Zamas, descend kilometers deep beneath the surface. The miners often spend weeks underground, toiling away at the country's untapped gold reserves. Observers have suggested that illegal mining is now so widespread, black-market gold arguably supports the communities once subsistent on the very same mines they worked in before they shut down. The lack of policing in the mines has seen the practice go on largely unabated. However, in the absence of law enforcement, the extensive network of abandoned mines beneath the region has become an arena to deadly gang warfare between rival factions. VICE News visited illegal mines near Johannesburg, to meet the Zama Zamas risking life and limb everyday in the violent struggle for South Africa's illegal gold. This is what it is like for those considering selling the farm to buy a dredge and strike it rich; hour after hour of relentlessly monotonous physical labor. Grabbing for rocks too big to fit in the nozzle before they slam it and you backward when they are too big to go in until your hands ache and can barely work. Maybe you find some gold but in most cases not so much. Rare pay streaks like this one are few and far between. So choose wisely before jumping in (literally) with both feet!

We averaged about 3/4 of an ounce here, burning 13 gallons of fuel over 5 days. The 3/4 of an ounce when sold, brought us $750.So a little less than $100 a day.A good spot to go if you have a few weeks and are looking to make the $ back you spent on gas and supplies for the trip. :) Please like and Subscribe.Thank you all !!!!

From the largest opal in the world, to rare viking treasure hoards, here are lucky discoveries that made people rich! Subscribe to American EYE! 5. Lost Pollack Painting Sometimes you might knowingly have something in your house that you just don’t know is worth a lot of money This was the case for a man living in Scottsdale Arizona who had a college of modern art painting that he just found to be intriguing. He called over some experts to take a look at one of his signed laker posters which was only worth about 300 bucks but the experts noticed something else in the garage that caught their eye! They noticed the series of smears consistent with a modern artist consistent with Jackson Pollock. This American painter is considered a major figure in abstract expressionism and his paintings are worth big bucks! The painting heavily damaged but even then, still worth some serious cash. The had it authenticated by an another expert who closely examined the painting and claimed it was indeed authentic and could sell for anything from 10 million to 15 million dollars! 4. Boulder Matrix Opal It seems like digging around in Australia could certainly pay off. The world’s largest opal matrix was discovered in Queensland Australia in 2011 and this amazing stone has 55,000 carats! That’s about 25 points of pure opal! The previous largest opal ever discovered only was 6,100 carats. This mammoth find took place in the dry outback which receives very little rainfall. It measured in at about 10 inches in length and is valued at 1 million dollars! 3. Jersey Iron Age Coins A great deal of coins were found on the Island of Jersey in 2012 and it may shock you This island in the English Channel that contains a great deal of French and English culture but also contained a massive treasure. After searching for this treasure for 30 years, two amateur treasure hunters found these coins that date back to Iron Age. But no, these weren’t made of iron but silver and was the largest haul of celtic coins to have ever been found. Each coin you see in this person’s hand was found on the island of Jersey is worth at least 200 pounds each, and you can tell they’re still in great condition. This makes the total discovery worth 10 million pounds or 12 million US dollars. They were found under 3 feet of soil under a hedge in someone’s farm. The coins were packed in a clay chest and literally weighed a ton! It’s believed that it was stashed here to keep the Romans from plundering it during their conquest of the British Isles. 2. Sutter’s Mill Gold Discovery Now for a little bit of history. Sometimes when you discover something, you might make other people rich but not necessarily yourself and this was the case for John Sutter. This guy had some bad luck. James Marshall who worked at Sutter’s Mill discovered a massive golden nugget and told his boss John Sutter about it. The two decided to keep it a secret for a while but hired some men to help them pan out the gold. We’ll it turns out that all the miners they hired were a bunch of no good thieves and they stole basically all the gold they came across. The miners basically told everyone that there was gold in them there hills and this is what brought millions of people seeking fast riches! Fortune seekers from all over the world like from China, Germany, Mexico, Ireland Turkey and of course the easter united states, moved to California during this period After all his employees cheated him and took off with gold found on his land, the gold ran out and he was left basically penniless. He decided to give up on the california dream and moved as far away as possible. California officially became a state in 1850, partially thanks to there being gold here. If this moment in history never happened, the western united states would most likely be much less developed and less rich. Now you know why california is called the “Golden State”.1. The Whydah Discovery The Whydah was a British slave ship that was originally captured by “Black Sam” and was found off the coast of Cape Cod in Massachusetts in 1984 by Barry Clifford. He actually credits a pirate treasure map that many discredited as being false. It seems to be the holy grail of pirate discoveries!
